Description of function

The IES 2 is an electrical medical device which purifies the air of smoke and gas particles which result from the vaporization of human and animal tis-sue. This smoke typically arises during the use of laser and electrosurgical devices and generally consists of water vapor, aerosols and organic gases.

The IES 2 improves the ambient conditions in the OR by:

• reducing the amount of dust by removing respirable particles,• improving vision,• removing unpleasant-smelling gases,• evacuating and filtering bioaerosols.

The IES 2 extracts the smoke-laden air via a device on the surgical applied part or via a hand-held tube which is separate from the device and posi-tioned near the applied part. The evacuated air is then purified of smoke and gas particles by means of a high-performance filter, and recirculated to the ambient air.

Air purification refers to particles such as aerosols, which are captured by an ULPA high-performance particle filter, and also to organic gases, which are detected by an odor that humans find unpleasant, among other things, and which can be extracted by a special gas filter..

Description of the various assemblies

Processor board

Pressure sensor

The pressure sensor records the back pressure and transmits this using the internal AD converter to the processor.

The pressure sensor is a 68.8 hPa (1 psi) sensor and is neither compensat-ed nor calibrated. It is fed via a constant-current source. The pressure sen-sor measuring bridge is then read in via a difference amplifier with a gain of 133 by the processor AD converter. The pressure sensor has a full-scale output signal of 20 mV. A gain of 133 gives a voltage of 2.66 V for 69 hPa. To adjust the zero output a potentiometer is provided. The amplitude is not adjusted, since the absolute value is not decisive for the evaluation of the occlusion (system blocked).

Temperature sensor

For the temperature sensor a temperature-dependent resistor is used. This is read into the processor via the AD converter.

Controller SupervisorThe assembly has three functions:

Function 1 The controller supervisor keeps the controller in Reset while the voltages are ramping up.

Function 2 The controller supervisor detects a power-fail and sends a message to the controller on the interrupt input. It is now possible for the controller to store the current settings and to operate in a safe status.

Processor: MC68HC912BC32Quartz: 16 MHzADC: The AD converter inputs are filtered by an RC element

Function 3 The controller supervisor functions as a low-active reset output. This out-put leads to a defined input in the controller.

The power-fail signal is emitted when a voltage of less than 1.25 V is de-tected at the PFI input. This voltage is tapped by the unregulated and only weakly filtered 18 V via a voltage divider.

R1 = 100 KOhm; R2 = 7.5 KOhm, U PFI = 1.25 V, U = 17.9 V

If the voltage after the rectifier is lower than 17.9 V, the processor detects a power-fail.

Power switchThe power on/off switch disconnects the unit from the mains. The switch is soldered directly to the printed-circuit board. It is a momentary-contact switch.

Transformer (only for 100 and 120 V unit variants)The ring core transformer sets the input mains voltage up to 230 V and supplies the fan motor with the required energy via the mains filter.

Power supplyThe power supply is subdivided into three main areas: The three power supplies are effected via a transformer. The three voltag-es are electrically isolated from each other.

Low voltage supply of the electronics, display and

controller

This voltage is rectified via a bridge-connected rectifier and stabilized to 5 V using a switching controller. The switching controller has an input volt-age range of 7 – 40 V and a clock frequency of 52 kHz.

Power supply for controlling the motor

This voltage is rectified via a bridge-connected rectifier and stabilized to 12 V using a linear voltage regulator.

Power supply for the ECB interface

This voltage is rectified via a bridge-connected rectifier and stabilized to 5 V using a linear voltage regulator.

Potential equalization socketThe potential equilization socket is for connecting up an external ground conductor. This socket is grounded.

Power connection with fusesThe power connection is via a non-heating appliance socket. The unit fuses are also here.

Line filter motorThe line filter compensates for the EMC interference of the motor. The line filter is connected to the motor by a copper band.

Motor controlThe motor is controlled by a PWM signal. Control is via an optical coupler as well as another electrically isolated supply voltage.

EEProm filterIn order to query the filter status, an EEProm is integrated in the filter. In this EEProm, the operating time of the filter is monitored, among other things. The EEProm is addressed via an SPI bus.

ECB interface (ECB = ERBE Communication Bus)The IES 2 can be controlled entirely via the electrically isolated ECB inter-face. All IES 2 functions can be availed of. The signal is generated by the ECB interface contained in the processor. Electrical isolation occurs using two optical couplers and another transformer winding. The levels are gen-erated via a corresponding interface module.

ButtonsThe system is operated using six buttons. Some of the buttons additionally have an LED, which is controlled by the processor. The buttons are inter-rogated via the processor, while the software carries out debouncing.

LED displayFor the display, a 7-segment display for 3 characters was chosen. In addi-tion, there are four other LEDs for lighting up the buttons and four for dis-playing the various statuses.

Control of the LED cathodes is via the data bus of Port B and a driver, ULN2803. The LED anodes are controlled by Port T via the transistors of type BC817. Control is sequential with a basic frequency of 62 Hz.

Technical safety check – step by step

For simplification the device to be tested is referred to below as the "test specimen".

Safety informationWARNING! For safety reasons (personnel protection) the test specimen should

generally be operated by a suitable isolating transformer. An exceptional case is the tests for grounded conductor resistance, ground leakage current, and patient leakage current, in which the test specimen is supplied with current via the safety tester.

ATTENTION! In the event of a fault occurring in the test specimen or individual com-ponents during the technical safety check the test steps taken so far no longer apply. Remedy the defect and repeat the technical safety check from the beginning.

IMPORTANT! It is assumed that the user knows how to operate the test specimen, the test equipment, the measuring equipment, and auxiliary test equip-ment. The test instructions only apply in conjunction with the relevant test steps.

IMPORTANT! Test equipment, measuring equipment, and auxiliary test equipment (cables, test boxes, etc.) are listed separately at the beginning of each test unit. Where Erbe article numbers are specified, only original Erbe test equipment, measuring equipment, and auxiliary test equipment may be used.

IMPORTANT! The test report for the technical safety check can be requested from Erbe Technical Service Tübingen. For the address see address sheet on last page.

Safety information

Replacing components

The "wearing parts", such as seals or similar components, are designed such that, given normal operating conditions, it should not be necessary to replace components in the first 10 years (except for filter and consum-ables).

The following parts may have to be replaced during servicing:

Contact pins on the contact circuit board

Remove main filter; do not open the housing! Remove the contact pins by pulling them out firmly by hand.

Boards, fan and other internal components

Having removed the housing cover, they can be removed with suitable tools. When opening and closing the housing cover, be sure to be careful of the grounded conductor fastening on the cover.

Software Software may only be updated by Erbe Elektromedizin using suitable pro-gramming tools.

WARNING! Unplug the power cord from the outlet before exchanging parts of the unit or cleaning it.
