1 Service-Learning Handout Ginew Golden Eagles Agency Description: The Ginew/Golden Eagle program is an after school prevention program serving at-risk Native American Indian youth ages 5-18 in South Minneapolis. The goal of the program is to help Native American Indian youth develop and strengthen skills they need to make positive life choices and live healthy lifestyles. Ginew Golden Eagles is located in the Minneapolis American Indian Center at 1530 E Franklin Ave Minneapolis, MN 55404. Position Description: Volunteers assist with the after school prevention program including helping with homework during the Indian Youth Study Time and helping kids get involved with sports during the recreation time. Ginew Golden Eagles

Agency Description: The Ginew/Golden Eagle program is an after school prevention program serving at-risk Native American Indian youth ages 5-18 in South Minneapolis. Position Description: Mondays: 4-6pm learning circles, The Common Table, 2001 Riverside Avenue, Mpls, 55454 Wednesdays: 6:30-8:30pm learning circles, Baker Center, 209 W. Page Street, St. Paul, 55107 Students must commit to participating on the same day weekly throughout the semester (2.5 hours per week, or about 25 hours total for the semester). In the adult circles, we have a cultural exchange discussion (with translation) for part of the night. For the other half of the night, learning pairs (of college student and immigrant adult) work together on preparing for the citizenship test, literacy learning, computer skills, conversation, social action, and collaborative projects. Special requirements: Each night for 30 minutes prior to the learning circle (3:30-4 Mondays, 6-6:30 Wednesdays) we have Welcome Workshop sessions for college students to reflect on their experience, develop relevant skills, and discuss issues related to their community work. Lifeworks www.lifeworks.org Agency Description:

Lifeworks Services is a nonprofit organization that helps people with disabilities live fuller lives that are integrated into the flow of community experience. Through employment at area businesses, social enrichment opportunities, and customized support services, Lifeworks provides the tools clients need to build the lives they want to live. For more than 40 years, we have collaborated with employers, volunteers, and government agencies to create expanded opportunities for people with disabilities.

Locations: We have centers located in Apple Valley, Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, Eagan, Hastings and Mankato. We offer a Supported Employment program for people who have work as a goal. These individuals work in the community at more than 300 businesses’s and are supported by our staff who act in the role of a job coach. For people who do not have work as a goal we have a Life Enrichment program, offering a large variety of activities, opportunities to access the community, participate in groups and receive therapies (music, speech, occupational and physical).

Position Description:

Normandale students can lead groups to discuss social skills and participate in role playing opportunities, play board or computer games, pursue personal interests with individuals such as travel, crafts, reading, current

events, sports or art. You may work one to one with individuals on the computer developing writing skills, helping with resumes, or learning overall technology skills. Students will not be left alone with clients and will be supervised by Lifeworks staff at all times. You will have access to our supervisors and direct care staff to ask questions and receive information related to our clients and organization. This is an opportunity to learn, grow and to make a difference in someone’s life. I hope you will consider joining us!

Guidelines:

We require a minimum of a 20 hour commitment, at least one day per week for the ten week semester. Our centers accept students Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. We do not have opportunities in the evening or on the weekends.

has received the application they will follow up with you promptly. Students must complete a brief training

regarding dignity and respect for people with disabilities and general information regarding the organization

prior to beginning volunteering.

Metro South Adult Basic Education Agency Description: Metro South Adult Basic Education provides basic educational opportunities to adults in Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina, and Richfield. Classes are offered in the areas of GED test preparation, high school diploma programs, English as a Second Language (ESL), and basic skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics. Position Description: In general, we seek volunteers who assist instructors and students in ESL and adult basic education classes. We have a variety of volunteering locations and options. All classes are led by licensed ESL teachers and all students are adults learning English at various levels. Volunteers generally serve for 1.25-2 hours per week for the duration of the semester.

1) Normandale Adult Basic Education Tutor: Metro South Adult Basic Education offers free College Prep classes in Reading, Writing, and Math held at Normandale Community College in the Tutoring Center. Tuesdays or Thursdays between 4:00-9:00 pm students can assist the teacher and adult ESL students with pre-college reading and writing skills needed to pass the Normandale placement tests.

2) Metro South Main Campus Tutor: Tuesdays or Thursdays from 11:15 am-12:30 pm volunteers assist teachers and adult ESL students with 4th grade and higher reading skills in our STAR reading program. Location: 2575 W. 88th St., Bloomington, MN 55431.

3) Hennepin Technical College Tutor: Mondays through Fridays 12:30-2:00 pm volunteers assist teachers and adult ESL students with reading skills. Location: Hennepin Technical College, 13100 College View Drive, Eden Prairie, MN 55347. 4) Additional Opportunities: We have additional morning, afternoon, and evening weekday opportunities. People Serving People www.peopleservingpeople.org

Agency Description: People Serving People provides emergency housing and community services that assist families experiencing homelessness in becoming self-sufficient and reconnecting with the community. In a safe, secure and sober environment, PSP provides services which cultivate independence and accountability. What distinguishes PSP from other emergency shelters is the broad range of on-site programs and services designed to address common barriers that homeless families are faced with. To provide a new opportunity for families, it is necessary that we help them find ways to break through these barriers and stop patterns that lead to poverty and homelessness. Housing and employment issues are addressed, along with educational, emotional, early childhood development, and life enrichment needs.

Position Description: Volunteers allow People Serving People to provide necessary services to our families. In fact, in 2014, People Serving People volunteers generously contributed over 32,000 hours of service. Volunteers make a difference! We have long term (2-3 mo. Commitment) and one-time volunteer positions available.

Long Term Volunteer Positions:

Commit to a regular weekly schedule for 2-3 months. Age: 18 +

Description Days/Time

Daytime Early Childhood Development Programs

Assist our staff in our Infant/Toddler School and/or Preschools (6 wks-5 yrs)

M-F: 9:00 am-4:30 pm (2-4 hour shift minimum)

Evening Children's Tutor Be a positive influence on elementary aged school children by assisting with homework and educational activities.

M-H: 5:30-8pm

Children's Activity Assistant*

Help our staff facilitate age appropriate games, crafts and group activities with children ages 3-17.

M-H: 5:30-8pm; M-F: (additional summer hours 1-3pm); Saturdays: 1-3pm

Roving Reader Reading to PSP children in our front lobby and helping to maintain our library. Each shift is 2 hours.

Monday-Sunday: 8am-8pm (2 hour shift minimum)

Computer Mentor Help the technology resource center staff assist PSP guests while on the computer. Assist with resume and cover letter formatting, job searches online, and the like.

M-F: 5pm-8pm (2 hour shifts); Saturday: 1-3pm (2 hour shifts)

Resident Resources Assistant

Help our front desk staff assist PSP guests. Duties include guest check-in, answering phones, and dispensing hygiene items. You must be able to work in a diverse and fast-paced setting.

Every day: 9am-10pm (3-4 hour shifts minimum)

Teen Programs

Teen Programing challenges teens to be problem solvers, innovators, risk-takers and creators as they develop projects that are meaningful to them.

M-H: 5:30-8pm

Development Assistant

Help donor relations and fundraising. Write thank you cards, event preparation, etc. Good handwriting is a must!

M-F: 2-3 hours between 8am-4pm

One-Time Volunteer Positions:

Serve breakfast, lunch or dinner to PSP guests and assist with clean-up as necessary.

Breakfast: 7:30am-9am; Lunch: 11:30am-1pm; Dinner: 4:15pm-5:45pm

Building Beautification*

Assist our housekeeping department with duties including general upkeep of the building and donation sorting.

M-F: 9am-6pm (2-3 hour shift); Saturdays: 12-6pm (2 hour shifts); Sundays: 12-4pm (2 hour shifts)

*Great for groups!

4. Select “Individual” and then fill out the volunteer application. After you fill out the application you’ll be prompted to sign-up for an orientation.

Note about Tracking Hours: To track hours volunteers must follow PSP's hours tracking process, which will be taught at orientation. Also, volunteers should keep a backup log of their hours. WISE

Agency Description: Women's Initiative for Self-Empowerment (WISE) is a multicultural 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization serving African, Asian and Latino immigrant/refugee women and girls from all countries, cultures, and socio-economic backgrounds. WISE started in 1995 to provide opportunities for women and girls in the immigrant communities to achieve their full potential and to increase their skills towards economic success. WISE utilizes volunteers in many of its programs & benefits greatly from the involvement of college students. Position Description: GGAL is a college preparation, career exploration, and leadership development program for immigrant/refugee girls in grades 9-12. The focus behind the GGAL Mentorship Program is to connect women in educational or professional settings with GGAL participants so that women can share their experiences with the girls to encourage, inspire, and empower them to achieve their educational goals. The program is structured around:

Educational Workshops: Provide information on planning, financing, preparing for college and career exploration.

Group Activities/Discussions: Provide resources on organization, time management, self esteem, public speaking, and other issues that the girls bring up and want to discuss.

Support Services: Provide individual assistance in areas of academics, scholarship searches, job/internship research, and personal issues.

Responsibilities:

• Participate in weekly workshops (3-4 workshops per month) • Time Commitment: One academic school year, although one semester may be accepted based on individual circumstances • Facilitate small group activities and work one-on-one with girls during workshops • Attend Mentors Training Session to maximize your impact as a mentor • Immigrants and women of color encouraged to apply • Volunteers are encouraged to come in 30 minutes earlier or stay behind for 30 minutes to help
