Comparing NeedsComparing NeedsComparing Needs

Often enough I have written about a therapy style called quite simply, “Reality Therapy.” For the sake of accuracy, over time the title of this therapy was changed to and currently is called “Choice Theory.” There are five basic needs to this therapy. They are Power, Love and Belonging, Fun, Free-dom, and Survival. These needs were regarded by the founder, William Glasser, MD, as being ge-netic. If only because of our exposure to what the media says on science, or due to our memory of what we learned in school, we all have a decent sense as to the definition of genetic. I would only want to add here to your already existing knowledge of the word with a metaphorical way of defining it, so that we don’t only know the meaning intellectually, but that we would, you might say, feel the meaning of the word. So, if I do not eat anything at all for a long enough period of time, I’ll die. Now that is what I would say is a pretty strong need – eating. It would be helpful here to apply the strength of this need for eating to the five needs expressed above. Let me lead you. Let’s take Love and Belonging, the second need expressed above. If a newborn baby is not held at all, only fed mechanically as an example, but never held, the baby will die. An older child may not physically die, but perhaps die inside, emotionally you might say. Such a child could very well develop an emotional disturbance. Take one more step, we could easily ask ourselves if without love we would not die inside as well, and become emotionally disturbed? This is all a way of stating that the needs above must be satisfied, and in the healthiest possible way. It’s not optional. Now there is a second therapy that I am familiar with, and that is called “Strategic Intervention.” This method was developed as a cooperation between Tony Robbins and Chloe Madanes. In this method there are six needs. They are Certainty, Variety, Love and Connection, Significance, Growth, and Contribution. These needs are also regarded as genetic, and with the same force expressed above. Notice that Love and Belonging is in this list, too. Notice that the Power need mentioned in Glassers system could be easily understood by the need Significance mentioned in this second sys-tem. But what I have to really point out is that this newer therapeutic school recognizes that Growth and Contribution are essential, too. Everything in life must grow or it will die. If I know and receive love, but I am not more loving over time – if I am not in this sense growing in love, I will be unfulfilled. And in the mind of Robbins-Madanes, a successful person who is unfulfilled equals failure. And we cannot ignore contribution either. To really be a fulfilled human being, I have to contribute to my society, to the people around me. These two needs are looked upon by Robbins-Madanes as nothing less than spiritual needs.

ANNIVERSARY WISHES

Remembering Jesus’ Message of Divine Mercy…

St. Faustina Writes in her diary

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church …

“Trust is the virtue that is the foundation and es-sence of those desiring to live the Message of Di-vine Mercy… there is much more to trust than be-lieving God is trustworthy; we must act on that be-lief and turn control of our lives over to Him… true peace will then reign in our hearts.” (EADM formation manual)

“… voluntary doubt about the faith disregards or refuses

to hold as true what God has revealed and the Church

proposes for belief. ‘Involuntary doubt’ refers to hesita-tion in believing, difficulty in overcoming objections con-

nected with the faith, or anxiety aroused by its obscurity.

If deliberately cultivated, doubt can lead to spiritual

blindness.” (ccc#2088)

It is with Joy that we announce the Upcoming wedding(s)

Easter Masses are very well attended and the parking lot may be full, especially at the 10:15 when there will be an additional Mass in the gym. In order to ensure that emergency vehicles have access to the church and gym, the Darien Auxiliary Police will close the parking lot when it is full.

If someone needs to be dropped off at church when it is full, please inform the police. They will allow you to drop the person(s) off, but you must then park elsewhere.

When the lot is full, please park on the side streets across Plainfield. The police will help you cross safely at the lot entrance closest to the rectory. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
