FRI ., DEC . 13 Artie Shaw Orchestra7:30 p.m. SARA BELLE NOVEMBER THEATER

Artie Shaw led several different bands throughout the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, always trying new ideas. A musical innovator and perfectionist, Shaw was a fantastic clarinetist and his music remains among the most interesting of the big band era. His virtuosity is carried on by his successor, Matt Koza, who leads the band in entertaining audiences worldwide.

Humor, warmth and honesty are the heart of this Tony Award-winning favorite. Tevye, a poor milkman, must weigh his family’s happiness against the traditions that have preserved a way of life. His daughters want to marry for love rather than an auspicious match, and outside forces threaten everything he holds dear, but family and faith help see him through. The score includes “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.”

The ensemble offers a rich and extensive menu of more than 30 musical works derived from 15 different styles, and neither the audience members nor the performers themselves know which works will be requested each night. Thelma K. Linhart Lindemann served as a trustee of Westminster Canterbury Foundation from 1990 to 1993 and was a devoted patron of the arts. In 2000, family and friends established an endowment to honor her memory by funding a series of performances each year. This series continues to grow.

Purity of voice and sweetness of persona – that is Liz Callaway. With a musical background that includes Broadway, concerts all over the world, and lead singing roles in many Disney films, Liz reveals herself as one of today’s timeless voices. Liz has had quite a career as a Tony nominee for her role in Baby and as acclaimed Grizabella in Cats. She is a magical performer who regularly tops the charts and amazes audiences.

MON ., SEP . 16 Dr. E. Bruce Heilman7:30 p.m. SARA BELLE NOVEMBER THEATER

Dr. E. Bruce Heilman became Chancellor at the University of Richmond October 1, 1988, after serving as President and Chief Executive Officer for approximately 17 years. Since his Marine Corps days he has had a passion for riding and you might spot him on his 2007 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide Patriot Special Edition motorcycle! In 2012 at age 86 he traveled through 31 border states of the lower 48 for 25 days covering 9,200 miles on his Harley. Heilman will share stories from this journey and many others.

Senator Watkins has long been, and continues to be, a champion of transportation in Virginia. It was his early legislative initiative in the months preceding the 2013 session of the General Assembly that finally provided the political courage and momentum that resulted in passage earlier this year of the first comprehensive transportation funding bill in Virginia since 1986. Senator Watkins will share his views on the critical role of transportation in the Commonwealth and how the Richmond region must work together to maintain a competitive and livable environment for future generations.

SEMINARY MONDAYSDr. Charles Bryan Deadly But Not Necessarily Dull History: Four Centuries of Death and Dying In AmericaMON ., SEP . 16, 23 & 3010:30 a.m., MONTAGUE CHAPEL Presented in three sessions, Dr. Bryan’s series will explore the development of the distinctively American tradition of dealing with mortality, from Colonial America to the Present. In 2008, Dr. Charles F. Bryan, Jr. retired after a thirty-year career as a public historian in Tennessee, Missouri and Virginia. For 20 years he was head of the Virginia Historical Society of which he is President and CEO emeritus.

Scott Spencer Spirited, Savvy, and Salty Women in Luke’s GospelMON ., OCT . 7, 14, 21 & 2810:30 a.m., MONTAGUE CHAPEL Many women in the gospels were remarkably purposeful and persistent, such as Mary of Nazareth, Joanna of Tiberius, Martha of Bethany, and the savvy widow who successfully presses her claim against an unjust judge. Come learn about these and other challenging and inspiring women!

F. Scott Spencer is Professor of New Testament and Biblical Interpretation at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. He is the author of six books and numerous articles on the role of women in the early church.

Christmas pageants have been an integral part of our experience for many years. Mother Phoebe will examine the story from the perspective of key Biblical figures.

Mother Phoebe holds an undergraduate degree in US History, a Master’s in Public Affairs and a J.D. degree. In the midst of her legal career she felt called to ordained ministry. A graduate of Virginia Theological Seminary, she has been the Rector of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church since 2011.

In his latest book, acclaimed author David L. Holmes looks at the role of faith in the lives of the presidents who have served since the end of World War II. He examines their professed beliefs and the things that influenced their faith.

David L. Holmes is a Walter G. Mason Professor of Religious Studies Emeritus at the College of William and Mary. Holmes has penned many titles including The Faiths of the Founding Fathers and A Nation Mourns. Books will be available in the Galleria.

TICKET RESERVATIONS

• Ticket request forms become available 10 days prior to the program. Ticket request forms may be picked up from and returned to Tower, Avalon and Center Desks. Residents of the Mary Morton Parsons Health Center, Pavilion, Monticello and The Gables may submit ticket requests through Recreation staff.

• Tickets will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline for receipt of ticket requests, usually three days before a program, will be indicated on ticket request forms. Requests received after a performance has reached capacity, or after the deadline, will be placed on a waiting list in order of response. Returned tickets will be distributed to those on the waiting list until the day of the performance. Any remaining tickets and/or standby tickets will be issued from the Low-November Box Office 45 minutes prior to the program on a first-come, first-served basis.

• To return tickets, please call the Low-November Box Office or return tickets to Tower, Avalon or Center Desks as soon as possible and no later than two hours before a performance.
