Santa Elena Construction OCT 25 RAUL SUNICO Michelle Molina LA Makeup Artist Joey Buscay Hairstylist An exciting blend of pop, jazz, choral and rock, “Serenata Filipina”, the only Filipino American event this season features a multigenre cast, performing beloved songs and original works that represent the diverse landscape of the Philippine archipelago. “OPM” is short for “Original Pilipino Music” and with 7,100 islands, the Philippines’ original music is as varied as can be. A likewise diverse cast of singers perform pop music to rock to jazz to folk. Patrons will be treated to songs that highlight Filipino ingenuity and fresh interpretations of popular favorites. The singers not only collaborate musically, but also big heartedly to help Filipinos who are slowly recovering from the Haiyan/Yolanda devastation. The show benefits the Scholarship Fund of the University of the Philippines Alumni of Greater Los Angeles (UPAAGLA) who aims to help displaced students from Tacloban. This event is produced by Music Arts Events, a production company that helps artists present and brand their events, and Philippine Patrons of the Arts USA, a 501C-3 non-profit organization. Special thanks to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for their continuing support of the John Anson Ford Theatres, a program of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission in a Los Angeles County Regional Park. You will be offered music beyond measure. Music is always from the heart. While we relish music about love, Benjamin Britten points out how beautiful music can be cruel. “It has the beauty of loneliness and of pain: of strength and freedom…. the beauty of disappointment and never-satisfied love…. the cruel beauty of nature, and everlasting beauty of monotony.” Music tonight fulfills a higher goal. As we sit and enjoy being serenaded by the fabulous artists’ renditions of the different genres of Original Pilipino Music [OPM], all the proceeds from UPAAGLA’s sponsorship will benefit our association’s scholarship program. We have recently extended scholarships to 4 students from U.P. Tacloban hard hit by Typhoon Haiyan. Rebuilding the region is a long term project and so is our commitment to help the underprivileged. We are specially proud our UPAAGLA Director, Annie Nepomuceno for producing “Serenata Filipina.” We are grateful for all the artists in this production, who in their own way have supported UPAAGLA in our numerous get-togethers. MON DAVID is the Winner of 2006 London International Jazz Competition. His spectacular vocal prowess was recognized by JazzTimesmagazine and jazz critics say of Mon that he “…is that rarity; a male jazz vocalist with a distinctly original style of his own – a remarkable l voice able to leap octaves in a single bound combined with a world class scat singing style.” Mon has captivated jazz

audiences at music festivals all over the world. With seven multi -awarded albums to his credit, all of which received unprecedented critical acclaim and plethora of awards including the 2006-2007 AWIT (Filipino Grammy) for Best Jazz Recording and Best Vocal Arrangement, his US debut CD “Coming True” was voted one of the Top 10 jazz vocal CDs of 2010 by Jazz Times & presently on radio jazz playlists around the US while his most current outing “SoloMon” continues to touch and move music lovers from different parts of the globe.

ANNIE NEPOMUCENO is a performer, producer and coach whose work ranges from musical theatre as Lady Thiang with 80’s star Debbie Gibson to featured vocalist of the Filipino-American Symphony Orchestra in “FASO Goes to the Movies.” Annie has won an Awit Award (the Philippine Grammy) for her work with pop vocal trio Three of a Kind. Her recent performances were with Martin Nievera at the Alex Theatre in “A Holly Jolly Christmas!”, and produced

“All Together Now—Celebrate in Song!” at the Ford in 2013. Her next appearance will be in Cayabyab/Lumbera’s “Noli Me Tangere” on August 23 at the Aratani Theatre, and with concert pianist Raul Sunico on October 25.

LARA AVENGOZA has been performing in the Filipino-American circuit since she was 3 years old. She has blossomed into a princess, literally, as she now plays Princess Jasmine in Aladdin! A Musical Spectacular!” Lara has come a long way from performing back-up vocals, for various Filipino artists such as Lani Misalucha, Eric Santos, Piolo Pascual, and Vina Morales. Lara was also the opening act for Jasmine Trias, Sitti Navarro, and David Pomeranz. Aside from appearing in musicals like Avenue Q and the 25th Annual Spelling Bee, Lara is currently working on her bachelor’s degree as a Communications, Entertainment major at Cal State Fullerton in addition to working full time as a Disney performer.

LOUSE MARIE CORNILLEZ recently wowed the audience at “Handog ng FASO sa Pasko” with her performance last December 2013. She has appeared in Miss Saigon, The King and I, Xanadu, and was guest vocalist in the San Francisco Symphony, and Orchestra National De Lille in France. Louise’s lyrical blend of Broadway and Opera, never fails to touch the hearts of her audiences. Her crystalline tone, 4-octave range and unique artistry thrills and captivates, connecting with her listeners on an emotional level. Last year, she had a successful solo concert at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre in Hollywood.

The HARANA MEN’S CHORUS beguiles audiences with its entertaining mix of love-themed classic and pop songs, upholding the courtship moonlight serenade tradition, the “Harana.” Its first self-titled album release on iTunes is a collection of its most-requested and original songs. Featured in the well-received “All Together Now--Celebrate in Song!” at the Ford Amphitheatre in 2013, the Harana also appeared in the televised “LA County Holiday Celebration” last Dec 24th at Dorothy Chandler Pavillion. Its members are: Erwin Andaya, Dennis Jardiel, Michael Zuñiga, Don Sagarbarria, Tony Cordova, Froilan Fulgencio, Gershon Napod, Ely Rada, Joaquin Labado and Lemuel Peñola.

ERWIN ANDAYA was male lead in the critically acclaimed revue of Ryan Cayabyab songs “Awit ng Buhay: The Music of Life” at the Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood in 2009. Erwin also is a featured soloist of the Harana Men’s Chorus, performing the well-applauded “Hanggang” in 2013 in “All Together Now—Celebrate in Song!” at the Ford.

AMIN BAGHALLIAN started his career playing for weddings, and now has a wide variety of songs and styles in his repertoire. With his saxophone and passion for music, he creates a unique musical experiences tailored to each client’s personal preference and vision. JOSIE GONZALEZ, has been singing since she was 5 and by the time she was 8, she could play Alicia Keys songs on the piano by ear, and sing them as well. She has appeared in commercials and TV pilots and has performed for events for Bahay Kubo Center for Culture and Performing Arts, “FilamJam!” in 2012 and in “Voices for Hope”, a fundraiser for Haiyan Typhoon Victims in 2013.

NICOLE and CARLO David are our special guests, who also happen to be two of Mon David’s five children. The duo has just released their album “Simula” (Beginnings) at ArtShare LA. The talented siblings’ performances keep them shuttling between the Philippines and the USA.

Concert Music Director and Harana Conductor ED NEPOMUCENO has two music specialties: Choral Conducting and Orchestration/Arranging, with a proficiency in training fledgling choirs. He has worked with the Philippine music industry’s best as an arranger, session vocalist and orchestrator. He was Music Director for “Awit ng Buhay” and “All Together Now—Celebrate in Song!” both staged at the Ford Amphitheatre. Ed was a member and official arranger of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, a founding member of the San Miguel Master Chorale and member of the Los Angeles Master Chorale for four years.
