Project Description Please briefly describe the project funded through your received grant and how it benefits the fisheries in the Upper Kern Basin.

This project's goal is to restore meadow ecosystem function and services across the Sequoia National Forest, specifically to designed to improve habitat/water quality and water availability for Kern River rainbow trout and California golden trout. The Sequoia National Forest staff prioritized 10 meadows for restoration in 2016, and Trout Unlimited worked to receive funding to complete environmental compliance, permitting and design to implement restoration of these meadows. The grants money received were used to purchase and implement pre-implementation water quality and quantity monitoring equipment, primarily ground water wells. Groundwater monitoring wells serve to determine if late season water quantity is increased, thus improved fisheries habitat, occurs due to meadow restoration. All wells were installed utilizing the funds made available through the Upper Kern Fisheries Enhancement Fund.

Did you encounter any obstacles in achieving the intended outcome? If so, what?

There was some delay in groundwater well installation due to environmental factors out of our control. The 2016-2017 winter was a record-breaking winter which delayed access into meadow sites to late June/July. Groundwater well installation was then set for mid-July and had to be postponed due to a large forest fire, the Schaeffer Fire. We were still able to install all wells in October and November 2017, completing the project.
