The holidays are almost here. Theypresent us with an amazing array of in-tricately woven themes, focusing onideals, reflections and celebration. It allbegins with an entire month of Eluldedicated for spiritual assessment. Wethen open the season with S’lichot on asomber note, enter Rosh Hashana opti-mistically and joyously, continue withthe extraordinary drama of Yom kippur, and then breathe in the freshness of

Sukkot and end with the celebration of Simchat Torah and ShminiAtzeret. What an amazing marathon! nothing can beat themajesty, the aura, and solemnity of the High Holiday experience;the inspirational singing of our Dimitri Trio, incredible participa-tion of so many of our members during the services (reading Torah, leading prayers, Kids choir, opening ark etc. etc.). It is an intensetime and it reminds us of why we love being Jewish.

The serious work of the Holiday season can be truly integratedinto our lives with joy, beauty, and fun. These Holidays remind usthat at the core of being Jewish is enjoying the fruits of our labor, celebrating as a community, and rejoicing in our shared heritageand teachings. May we celebrate many joyous moments togetherin good health for many years to come.

PRESIDENT MIRIAM RUBEWhen I moved to Florida from Ohio,

one of the most frequent questions I wasasked was whether I missed the chang-ing of the seasons. When I explained theseasons do change in the Sunshine State, they would laugh wondering if I meantmy stilettos had replaced my studded flipflops.

But we know better. The summer iscarefree, full of the smell of coconut andfresh limes, scrumptious barbecues with

good friends and family trips. Then, slowly beach towels are rolled up,backpacks are filled and drivers have to notice school zone signs. Ihave before noted the intersection of the new school year and theJewish new year reminding us we have another chance. Withoutknowing the day, the season has changed from sadness to comfort, from reflection to renewal. Our weekly Torah portions usher in thenew season, a season of solemnity and yet celebration.

Judaism has built in our seasons intertwining the smells, tastes, and sounds of the fall and the High Holy Days. Like the burst of thered apple trees, the rustling of falling leaves under foot and the smellof summer squash and pumpkin, my senses know we will taste theapples and honey, tremble to the sounds of the shofar and smell thedelicacies passed down through generations.

The seasons have passed and I have seen babies in our congrega-tion become bar/ bat mitzvah, young adults mature as they leave forcollege, anniversaries celebrated at the Torah and too many morestanding for the Kaddish. Interesting view I have from the bimah.Seasons seem to pass more quickly. My perspective expanded, I seemore. I see empty seats where I remember those who came regularly.I smile when I notice new faces and I marvel at the interaction be-tween the generations.

To me, I do not miss the changing of the seasons. I get to changewith them every week.

Temple Sinai welcomed Rosanne Mendelowitz as Executive Director in July 2016. Rosanne hasbeen actively involved in the field of Jewish agency management and administration for over adecade.

Prior to arriving in South Florida to join the Temple Sinai community, Rosanne served as theSynagogue Administrator for the Pine Brook Jewish Center in Montville, New Jersey. In that role, she managed all day-to-day operations of the synagogue, including fiscal operations and admin-istrative aspects of religious services. She also worked as the synagogue’s nursery school directorcreating innovative programs to increase preschool enrollment. Prior to her years with the PineBrook Jewish Center, Rosanne helped guide the Clifton YM-YWHA/Tri-County JCC for over10 years, having served as both a volunteer and then joining the professional staff as a member ofthe senior management team.

Rosanne has a very clear vision for the future of Temple Sinai, as set forth below:

• Temple Sinai will continue to be vital and relevant to every member in whatever way they feel is most important to them and all members will be treated with respect.

• Temple Sinai will operate as a healthy organization and be a welcoming and friendly center of the com-munity.

• While the ebbs and flows of membership are a reality of life, the purpose of why we exist will neverchange. We will always continue to provide a relevant connection to our members.

• Temple Sinai will be a place where new Jewish families moving into town are welcomed and invited into our halls.

With a strong belief in respecting the spiritual compass that a synagogue provides, Rosanne believes in working every day to "betterourselves as the center of the community" and takes much pride in leading that community as part of a team.

Rosanne, a graduate of The Ohio State University, has settled into her new home in Davie and is thrilled to be exploring her new sur-roundings as a Floridian. Her daughter Rachel is in the Master of Occupational Therapy program at Nova Southeastern University andher son Dylan is beginning his freshman year at the University of Central Florida.

The High Holy Days and Fall Festivals

The Hebrew month preceding Rosh Hashanah, Elul, is designated as a month of introspection and repen-tance. In preparation for the Jewish New Year, special prayers are recited. Psalms 27 is added at the end ofmorning and evening prayers, and the shofar (ram's horn) is blown at the end of morning services on week-days (except for the eve of Rosh Hashanah itself ). Among ?? it is customary to increase the giving of charity(Tzedakah) and to ask forgiveness from people one may have wronged. At midnight on the Saturday nightbefore Rosh Hashanah, we begin reciting selichot, penitential prayers

Rosh Hashanah Rosh Hashanah, beginning of the year, is the Jewish New Year, and falls on the first and second days of theJewish month of Tishri (September/October). The Mishnah, the core work of the Jewish Oral Torah, sets thisday aside as the new year for calculating calendar years and Sabbatical and jubilee years. Rabbinic literaturedescribes this day as a day of judgment. Some descriptions depict God as sitting upon a throne, while bookscontaining the deeds of all humanity are opened before Him. Prayer services are longer than on a regularShabbat or other Jewish holidays, and include (on weekdays) the blowing of the shofar. On the afternoon ofthe first (or the second, if the first was Saturday) day, the ritual tashlikh is performed, in which sins are "cast"into open water, such as a river, sea, or lake.

The Ten Days of RepentanceThe "ten days of repentance" include Rosh Hashanah,Yom Kippur and the days in between, during which timewe should meditate on the subject of the holidays and ask for forgiveness from anyone we have wronged.Shabbat Shuvah, is the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur when we read a special Haftarah thatbegins Shuvah Yisrael (come back, oh Israel.) It is held that, while judgment on each person is pronounced onRosh Hashanah, it is not made absolute until Yom Kippur. The Ten Days are therefore an opportunity to mendone's ways in order to alter the judgment in one's favor.[2]

Yom Kippur Yom Kippur is the Jewish festival of theDay of Atonement. In the Hebrew calen-dar, the ninth day of Tishri is known asErev Yom Kippur (Yom Kippur eve). YomKippur itself begins around sunset on thatday and continues into the next day untilnightfall, and therefore lasts about 25hours. The traditional observance is to fastthroughout Yom Kippur, and many attendsynagogue for most of the day. There arefive prayer services, beginning in theevening with Kol Nidre; then in the morn-ing: Shacharit, Musaf, Mincha and conclud-ing with Neila.

Sukkot, a Hebrew word meaning "shelters" or "huts," refers to the Jewish festival of giving thanks for the fallharvest. Sukkot is celebrated five days after Yom Kippur on the 15th of the month of Tishrei, and is markedby several distinct traditions. One, which takes the commandment to dwell in booths literally, is to erect asukkah, a small, temporary booth or hut. Sukkot (in this case, the plural of sukkah) are commonly used duringthe seven-day festival for eating, entertaining and even for sleeping. Sukkot also called Z’man Simchateinu(Season of Our Rejoicing) is the only festival associated with an explicit commandment to rejoice. A finalname for Sukkot is Chag HaAsif, (Festival of the Ingathering) representing a time to give thanks for thebounty of the earth during the fall harvest.

Sukkah is a symbol of the frail huts in which the Israelites lived during their 40 years of wandering in thedesert after the Exodus from Egypt. It also serves to remind Jews of the biblical account of how God pro-tected them, provided for their needs in the wilderness, and by implication, still watches over us today.

Sukkot come in many variations, but there are some guidelines to follow when building them. Two importantones are:

• A sukkah has to have at least three walls. Only one can be an existing wall, like the side of a house. Thewalls may be constructed of any material, generally canvas, wood or metal. Today, it is possible to buy ready-to-assemble sukkah kits.

• The roof is to be temporary, covered with loose branches from trees or anything that grows out of theground, and has been cut off from the ground. According to tradition, this roof covering, s’chach, should giveshade and yet allow those in the sukkah to see the stars through the roof at night.

Once the sukkah is built, it is common to decorate it by hanging fruit and other items from the s’chach, puttingposters on the walls, and extending hospitality to friends and family.

Lulav and Etrog are symbols of the harvest. The lulav is a combination of date palm, willow and myrtlebranches, held together by a woven palm branch. The etrog, or citron, is a lemon-like fruit with a wonderfulcitrus smell. When reciting the blessing over the lulav and etrog, one should wave them in six directions—north, south, east, west, up, and down. This action symbolizes that God can be found in all directions, notonly in one particular place.

The traditional ritual for the lulav and etrog is as follows:

1. Stand facing east. Place the lulav (with the spine facing you, myrtle on the right and the willows on theleft) in your right hand and the etrog in your left hand. Bring your hands together so that the lulav and etrogare side by side.

2. Next, recite this special blessing: Baruch atahAdonai, Eloheinu Melech haolam, asher kid'shanub'mitzvotav v'tzivanu al n'tilat lulav. "Blessedare You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the uni-verse, who has sanctified us through Yourmitzvot and ordained the taking of the lulav."

3. On the first day of the festival, add the She-hecheyanu prayer.

4. Finally, shake the lulav in all directions –east, south, west, north, up, and down – whilereciting or chanting the words Hodu l'Adonai kitov ki l'olam chasdo. "Give thanks to God, forGod is good, for God's loving-kindness en-dures forever."

Camp Sinai – Was the Coolest PlaceTo Be This Summer!!!

This was another great year with170 campers (almost 30 % more thanlast year) spending their summer withus. We had lots of really fun field tripsto bowling, TY Park, Young at Art,

Museum of Discovery and Science, and Flamingo Gardens, justto name a few. The bus rides were really cool, too. The childrenenjoyed swimming lessons, karate, dance, music, fitness, and Shab-bat. We also had many guests come to entertain including Mickey& Minnie, Batman, a dancing dinosaur, Alex the talking cocka-too, and so much more!

The children participated in two mitzvah projects this summer.First, they made cards for Hollywood Police officers, thankingthem for all they do to protect us. The officers loved the cards andthe project was noted in the local newspapers. Then, the childrenmade silk flowers and gave them to Rabbi to take with him when-ever he visits our members in the hospital or hospice. The flowers

That is delightful. The mitzvah (commandment) tohelp those less fortunate than oneself is something that should be instilled in us at a young ageso that by the time we are adults we do it automatically. 8:15 a.m. & 5:30 p.m.(Sundays & Holidays 9:00 a.m.)

We just left Joe DiMaggio Hospital, where we delivered eight buckets and two large boxes of crafts and schoolsupplies.

Thank you to all who donated the items that filled and overflowed our centerpieces. The children's endocrinol-ogy department was very appreciative. One child recently diagnosed is virtually homeless. Add to his life strug-gles a diagnosis of Type 1 insulin dependent diabetes. We hope the surprise will bring some brightness into hisdays ahead.

On the way out, I asked the boys how they felt. Jacob said this is how we were raised and we can do more.Reuben referred to his haftarah, a drop in the bucket. We can all make a difference, but we have to start somewhere.
