Our Mission

The women’s ministry of Kelview Heights Baptist Church

seeks to encourage women in spiritual growth,

discipleship, enrichment, ministry and evangelism.

This goal will be accomplished by providing resources,

training, enrichment events and a supporting network. www.kelviewwomensministry.com

A Place Where Age Doesn’t Matter but Friendships Do!

S tudy to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be

ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV). The New

King James Version says, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a

worker who does not need to be ashamed…”

Every year we are challenged to make it a goal to read through our Bible in a year.

We have little charts to check off as we read our chapters each day. And, while that

is a good goal, do we sometimes find ourselves just reading words but not really

absorbing what they are saying? God says to “study…be diligent…” I looked up the

word “study” in the dictionary. Among the words used to describe “study” was

“meditate” and “reflect”. We all know what those words mean but I decided to look

up “reflect” and there it was!

“Reflect - to reproduce or show (an exact likeness) as a mirror would.”

As we study the Word of God, we will become more like Him. God created us in

His image. He wants us to reflect His attributes and look just like Him. We can only

do that through diligently studying His Word.

A few years ago one of our sweet, elderly women went to be with the Lord. At her

funeral, she was described as a Bible “scholar”. That word caught my attention

because, for some reason, my idea of a scholar was some old, gray headed professor,

sitting in his musty office, surrounded by books, and smoking a pipe. Our ultimate

goal should be to become Bible scholars…rightly dividing the truth. Invest in some

commentaries and start digging. Are you up for the challenge?

THE BEAUTIFUL WIFE

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear

nor be afraid; for the Lord your God, He is

the One who goes with you. He will not

leave you nor forsake you.”

Deuteronomy 31:6

This summer did not end exactly the way I had “planned” for it

to end. Anyone who knows me even a little bit knew I was

preparing for my oldest “baby” to leave the nest and fly off to

college this fall. As we packed, sometimes the grief of him

leaving would be almost unbearable. But, as a parent, I had to

step back and realize that the season of us directing and leading

the minute details of his life were over, and I had to trust the

Lord to guide him through life.

I certainly cannot say there were no tears, because there were,

but in the bottom of my soul, I heard the Lord telling me, “I’m

still here with you, even on the other side of goodbye.” He

calmed and quieted my spirit, reminding me that I had done my

best, Brandon was prepared, and that He would be guiding and

protecting Brandon, just as He had done for the previous 19

years. “Trust Me,” He said.

Fast forward, just six days later… Life was showing signs of

“normal.” We were regaining a schedule, a comfortable

routine. Brandon was settled into his dorm, making new friends

and thriving. I was starting to realize that this new season of my

life was going to be okay.

The familiar routine of school and work only lasted a day

though, until I got a phone call from my daddy, saying Mom had

quit breathing. They were taking her to the emergency room,

and to get there quick. We got to the hospital in time to sit

with Daddy and we were able to pray with her and hold her as

she passed into the Lord’s presence. Another BIG goodbye

in my life. How do you cope? How do you keep from just

checking out?

Here is the answer. Just as He had comforted me when

Brandon drove away, He was with me now, too. Mom was

prepared. She had trusted Christ as her Savior. She was ready

for the next season of her spiritual life. The Lord had

welcomed her into His presence.

So, if you are struggling with a goodbye, and you do not know

how you can cope, rest in knowing that the Lord is on the

other side of your goodbye. He is waiting there with His grace

and comfort and peace. Make sure you and your loved ones

are prepared for the ultimate move from this life to your

eternal resting place. Then, no matter how big or small the

goodbye is, you can know your Savior will be there to greet

you on the other side.

Grandma’s Back Porch For he will not often consider the years of his life, because

God keeps him occupied with the gladness of his heart.

Ecclesiastes 5: 20 NASB

We all know how important it is to pray for

our children and grandchildren. We pray for

their health and safety, their friends and

grades, and all the issues that come up when

raising children. Most importantly, we pray

for their salvation as they reach the age of

accountability.

But, do we pray for their future spouses?

Lee and I started praying for our boys’ wives when they were

little. We didn’t know who they were or where they were

but we knew they were out there, growing up, going to

school, playing outside and doing all the same things our boys

were doing. We prayed for their salvation and that their

parents were raising them in Christian homes and teaching

them to be godly women.

When one of our daughters-in-law, Julie, was little, about 5

or 6 years old, she and her family were victims of a home

invasion and armed robbery. The gunmen tied the family

together and made them lay face down on the floor. It was

shortly before Christmas and all the gifts were under the

tree ready to be opened. When I talked to her mom about

it, she told me they were sure the intruders had planned to

kill them but God intervened and they survived their terrible

ordeal. The robbers stole all their Christmas presents…

except for Julie’s, because she was little… or … maybe…

perhaps … could it be ... we were praying for her at that

very time? Only God knows! The gunmen took pity on her

mom and let her keep her wedding rings “because it was

Christmas”.

“The rest of the story” is, God answered our prayers and

gave our boys beautiful, godly women, Kelly, Julie and

Meghan, who love the Lord and complete our family. They

are all from different states and backgrounds and one of

them even met online. And those beautiful girls have given us

eight beautiful grandchildren!

So, keep praying for your children and grandchildren and

their future spouses and see what God has in store for you.

Now we have eight spouses for our grandchildren some-

where, out there, growing up. We’re praying for them too.

It’s too important to leave to chance!

Until next time…

Preparing Him for the Other Woman By: Sheri Rose Shepherd

What kind of husband will your son grow up to be?

His is a generation of boys who have better relation-

ships with their Game Boxes, I-Pods, televisions, and

computers than they do with their families. His under-

standing of marriage is that it has little hope for

success, witnessing a fifty percent divorce rate both

inside and outside of the church. His world is where

pornography is no longer a hidden shame, but encouraged as

entertainment. Can you raise your son to one day love, lead, and

protect a wife and family in a world like this? The answer is Yes!

The heartbeat of this book is to give you the tools to help your

son become a tender warrior who will one day fight for his family,

a godly husband who will faithfully love his wife, and a leader who

will be a man of his word. The time is now to take your love tears,

prayers, and influence and pour them into his future. Even if our

world does not change its moral fiber, you can influence your son

and bring hope to the next generation. It’s an opportunity of a

lifetime—yours.

The Mother-in-Law Dance By: Annie Chapman

Can two women love the same man and still get along?

Absolutely! Annie Chapman believes that a mother-in-

law and daughter-in-law can become friends—even

close friends. However, this connectedness often takes

years to develop. Now that journey can be a joyful

one! Offering practical advice and biblical wisdom, this

book helps mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law

nurture their relationships. Readers will learn how to dance

together on topics that include:

Dealing with traditions and activities

Handling intrusive comments and actions

Accepting and rejecting child-rearing advice

Coping with differences in faith

Through thoughtful ideas and humor, this book helps mothers-

in-law and daughters-in-law experience a dynamic loving

relationship—making life look less like a boxing ring and

more like a dance floor.

You know that God wants you to bless others, but did you know that He will provide the means by which you can?

You can’t give what you don’t have, so He wants to bless you with abundance in order to meet the needs of others. It is a

spiritual principle that as you plant a seed of blessing, a harvest of blessing will return to you so you can give again. The more

you give, the more you receive. The more you receive, the more you have to give and so goes the cycle of blessing that you

generously set into motion. Consider these ways to bless others: time spent listening, providing a meal, baby sitting, making a

phone call, cleaning a home, washing a car, speaking an encouraging word, running errands… Make it your great quest to be

a blessing everywhere you go. You’ll be the most blessed of all. —Excerpt from Breath Prayers

“When I Lay My Isaac Down” by Carol Kent

When God calls us to lay down the place,

ministry, or even the person we love most on the

sacrificial altar, how will we respond? Carol Kent’s

son is in prison. When her only son committed

murder, she was forced to lay the person she

valued most, or her “Isaac”, in the hands of God.

Fortunately, like Abraham before her, in the midst

of her terrible sacrifice, Carol encountered the God

who loves her more than she loves her Isaac and she

learned, little by little, to trust her Isaac to His caring

hands. Carol shares the eight transformational power

principles she and her husband learned about

forgiveness and faith through their emotional and

spiritual agony. Their personal story will bolster your

faith, renew your hope, and challenge you to new

levels of spiritual renewal.

Growing in Grace Women’s Conference

with Elizabeth George Conference Highlights by Deanna Dunn

Our Women’s ministry, A Woman’s Heart, hosted our Tenth Annual Women’s Conference on Saturday, August 24th. Donna Berry introduced the featured speaker Elizabeth George who is a

best selling author and national speaker. Her topic was “A Woman’s Walk with God – Growing in the Fruit of the Spirit.” She challenged and encouraged us to grow the Fruit of the Spirit in our

lives by emptying ourselves of our desire for ease, comfort and control to allow our sweet Holy Spirit to fill and empower us.

Sisters, Female Vocal Group of the Year, presented our special music. They led us in worship with their delightful harmony and down to earth openness. They set the stage for us to receive God’s

Word into our hearts as Elizabeth George spoke. These three sisters have been singing their amazing harmony together since they were children. What a blessing as they ministered to us.

Katie Rydell Robinson’s decorations of bright aqua and gold brightened our spirits, helped us

anticipate fall and Samantha Burgess provided food and drink. Bethany LeRoy led her group of greeters to make everyone welcome, give directions and answer any questions as they entered.

Marleah Reed’s book volunteers helped us acquire Elizabeth George’s books. Emcee, Lauren Hobbs delighted us with the drawing for our “Happy Everything” door prizes.

Elizabeth guided us into a deeper understanding of what it means to cultivate the Fruit of the Spirit

in our lives as she admonished us to simplify our lives by applying God’s Word in every circum-stance. As we cultivate a natural tree with care and protection, we must cultivate that same care

and protection in our spiritual lives – to make ourselves available to the Holy Spirit so that He can grow our love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Our goal is to be more like our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

As she explored Love, she observed that “pain presses us more closely to God.” Love is the

sacrifice of self – choosing to love the unlovely, unappreciative and hateful. Relinquishing our pride, we bathe ourselves in the water of the Word to channel God’s love to those difficult people and

circumstances in our lives. “Love serves when we want to be served, gives when we want to withhold, and helps when we are hurting.”

Joy is our sacrifice of praise – even in the midst of our pain. It is not based on things but theology

[what we believe about God], not on emotions but decisions to be obedient, not on experiencing good circumstances but our sense of well-being because all is right between us and our God.

When we have stress, pain, sorrow, grief, misunderstandings, trials and the fires of affliction, we choose to give the sacrifice of praise. It is like the melody of a river which is caused by rocks which

disturb its tranquility. It is a joyful sound only God can produce. Since bright light allows all facets of a diamond to sparkle brilliantly best against a dark background, so our dark times multiply the

radiance and glory of our joy in the Lord. Peace is tranquility of heart and composure of soul which results when we trust that our times

are in God’s hands. Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” God uses

our restlessness of spirit and negative circumstances to make us need Him. We must take our panic into the rest of God’s presence, take our nervousness into the truth of God’s control and

take our dread into the trust of God’s dealings with us. Like Mary, we must choose the better way of sitting at the Lord’s feet worshipping Him versus Martha’s stewing and lashing out. Give God

the sacrifice of trust. It results in peace. Without God, we can do nothing. “Don’t be nothing women.”

Conference Highlights continued

Patience comes into play as we handle people, problems, and relationships of real life: being

stressed, abused, and manipulated - facing accusations and criticisms. Where there are people, there are always problems. Patience reigns when we don’t succumb to the flesh to hate and

retaliate when attacked. We experience victory when we relate to people with patience, kindness and goodness. We must not react but respond supernaturally in a Christ like way –

“count down before we blast off.” Patience involves endurance and mercy. It leaves revenge and retaliation to God when we’re attacked. We must step back and speak softly. It necessitates

giving up our rights to lecture and confront. Desire and pray for that other person’s good; lengthen your fuse.

Kindness is tenderly, sweetly planning to do something good for those who plan evil against you,

“not quarrelsome” (2 Timothy 2:24). Kindness cares about all people just because they are humans. We’re yoked to our spouses and children. Kindness means that yoke doesn’t chafe. We

exhibit a tender touch with compassion, “gentle as a nursing mother” (1 Thessalonians 2:6-7). Kindness makes others’ lives easier, recognizes when they are hurting and meets their needs – loving them more than they deserve. Jesus healed a soldier who had come to arrest Him. He is

our model.

Goodness is totally active, pouring out God’s love on others even when we want to retaliate. We are God’s workman created for good works (Ephesians 2:10). Our adornment is our reputa-

tion for good works, not clothing or jewelry. Rebecca watered Abraham’s servant’s camels – probably drawing about 500 gallons of water. “Martha fixed the meal and cleaned the house but

without kindness. She was just Martha the Mouth looking at her work load and not the Lord.” Patience and goodness asks what the problem person in our lives needs to make his or her life

easier. Ouch! “To do evil for good is human corruption; to do good for evil is the nature of grace.” Polycarp served and provided the need of his arresting officers when they came to burn

him at the stake.

Elizabeth George challenged and encouraged us to allow the Holy Spirit to cultivate the Fruit of the Spirit in our lives. We were refreshed by spending time in God’s Word, the fellowship of

other ladies and allowing Elizabeth’s insights to “enlighten our understanding.” All who attended the Woman’s Fall Conference experienced rest and blessing. If you have never

attended one of our conferences, make definite plans to attend our next one. We are privileged that our pastor and leaders encourage our ladies to grow in grace through world class speakers

for our conferences. If you choose to not attend, you lose a wonderful chance to grow spiritually. We begin announcing our conference dates many months in advance so that you can make sure

that you keep that date open. Make sure that you attend our next conference!

Heart Talk

" But seek first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added to you..." Matthew 6:33

I heard a preacher say once, “Don’t be so heavenly minded, that you are no earthly good.” I had to

think on that one for a while, and still think of that statement often. To this day, I’m still not sure what

he was really trying to say. I guess it would mean, you think about heaven and the things of God so

much that you forget where you really are and you don’t give back to society to do any good??? Not

sure.

Personally, I wish more people were more heavenly minded, including myself. If we were consumed more with

God and His Word, we might not have some of the problems we end up with in our lives.

Here are five quick ways to see just how heavenly minded we are in a typical day:

1. How much time and thought goes into your quiet time in prayer and reading His Word?

2. Do you have standards set for your life and home that reflect God’s principles for daily living?

3. What you read, listen to in your music, and watch on television; does it reflect the things of God or those

things that are destroying marriages and family relationships?

4. When posting your status update on the many social media outlets, does it show a woman who is heavenly

minded or do you push the limit in your comments and pictures?

5. At work, church and home, are you known as the woman who is obedient to God or known as the woman

who is tolerated for her unkindness and cruel remarks?

Those are just five simple, easy self check points that would help us to see if we are heavenly minded or worldly

minded.

I don’t know about you, but I would prefer to be heavenly minded in this wild and crazy world we

live in. I believe when we are truly heavenly minded, we can reach the world for Christ without any

regrets. The sad news is, we live in a fallen world and it doesn’t come easy. At the beginning of each

day we need to give the day to God and ask Him to guide each step we take.

“Heavenly Father, Forgive me for the ways that I have not honored You in my life. I ask for wisdom and discernment in

each decision that I make today. I pray that my life would only bring honor and glory to You. Thank you for saving my soul

and may I always have peace of living eternally with You someday in that beautiful place called Heaven. In Jesus’ name,

Amen.”
