On the cover: The Cochenour Project is one part of a group of many projects proving to be a great success story in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada.

“Quality interactions and coaching in safety improve our culture and promote our philosophy to provide a level of service to the mining industry which exceeds normally accepted standards.” Chris Betsill, Superintendent, Health, Safety and Environment J.S. Redpath Limited

In his eighth year with Redpath, Mr. Betsill brings vast field experience from Redpath projects in Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia, Chile, Argentina and the United States.

us to build rapport with employees and demonstrate our commitment to their well-being. Each day, pause the work and take a moment to really look at the conditions and practices in the workplace. Through diplomatic, two-way communication, we can offer positive or constructive feedback to improve upon our conditions and practices. Listen to understand our employees and place value on their input - this encourages ownership of the Redpath Safety Program and more importantly, can prevent incidents.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

SAFETY MESSAGE

“We will work as hard as we can to ensure that our commitments to our clients are met safely and on time. This, more than anything else, will secure a successful future for us all.”George Flumerfelt, President and CEO The Redpath Group

In my new position, I have a broad view of our projects and their safety cultures. This unique perspective affords the opportunity to meet a variety of people and experience their work environments.Health and Safety Management Systems include policies, procedures and rules. While these systems are crucial to our safety programs, engaging our employees is equally as important. Our frontline leaders and project managers play an important role in employee engagement; these interactions are an opportunity for

These are, without question, tough times in the mining industry. Commodity prices peaked in 2011 and have been trending downward for the past four years. The mining industry, which was a favourite of investors from 2005 through to 2011, is now shunned by most. The experience and euphoria of the super-cycle days now seems like such a long time ago. There was a time when we all wanted to believe that China’s voracious appetite for commodities would continue forever and that all would be right in the mining world indefinitely. Alas, all good things must end eventually and mining company share prices have dropped right along with metal prices. Mining companies find themselves in a tough spot having to aggressively cut costs, including dividend payments to their shareholders. It is even worse for junior mining and exploration companies who

are in a fight for survival, having seen their share prices decline in many cases by more than 80%; raising additional capital is extremely difficult in this market. Redpath is also enduring tough times, with fewer contracting opportunities available to us and competition for what few projects there are is intense and won’t relent anytime soon. The good news is that things will get better. Unfortunately, there is no way to know when. The world will always need the products the mining industry produces and this will create an ongoing market for Redpath’s services. No matter how tough times are in our business (and mining and mining contracting are very tough businesses!), our response must always be the same: We will work as hard as we can to ensure that our commitments to our Safety - First, Last and Always.

(President’s Message continued…)clients are met safely and on time. This, more than anything else, will secure a successful future for us all. This positive attitude that exists throughout The Redpath Group has enabled us to win 54 projects this year worth almost 400 million dollars. There are also a few large projects we have our eyes on… keep up the great work everyone.

He started with the business in 1991 and apart from a break of two years, has had continuous service and understands the business and what makes it tick.Gordon and I started working together in 1992. I have always appreciated our ability to work successfully together as a team - especially Gordon’s attention to detail, shrewd negotiating skills and the care that he has for people within the business. I must recognise the loyalty and commitment that Gordon has shown to both Redpath as a company, and to me personally.Gordon has been one of the best people I have met in the industry. His passion for people and for the business to be successful can only be fully appreciated when you work with him. His skill, judgement and plain hard work will be sorely missed at Redpath. On behalf of the whole Redpath family, I would like to wish Gordon all the best for his future endeavours. I know that whatever Gordon does end up doing, it will be like all things he does; successful.

The Global Human Resources team has seen some significant changes in leadership this past year. Here is the current list of the senior HR leadership around the globe:

Redpath Travel ProgramBy Drew ArtusThis past May, Redpath entered into a travel agreement with AMEX Global Business Travel. AMEX will be

Redpath’s sole provider for all business units in the coming months as the program is rolled out. Collectively, Redpath invests a great deal in travel each year, which often entitles the company to volume discounts. These

value-added savings and agreements will serve the company well into the future, and help ensure that the cost of doing business continually supports Redpath’s competitive edge in the industry. Providing high quality travel

services to employees on a global scale is very important and annual global reporting will enable Redpath to harness opportunities to further improve the travel experience and maximize the program’s benefits.

Human Resources Management System (HRMS)

Redpath was informed last year by the system owner, HRWare, that our current HRMS would not be supported past 2017, so global requirements to replace the current system are being actively reviewed. All business units are participating with the end goal to have a truly global system for all of Redpath.

Redpath Global Mobility Services (RGMS) Inc.

RGMS helps streamline the process of mobilizing expatriates around the globe. In October 2014 Redpath incorporated RGMS to support the movement of expatriates around the globe. RGMS provides country specific information on employment and taxation, payroll services and reporting, benefits (CIGNA robust worldwide coverage), and social security/treaty information as required to support Redpath operations. RGMS also provides a layer of corporate protection when dealing with foreign jurisdictions around the globe. While the RGMS is being considered for all international assignments, each will be looked at individually and a business case will be developed and justified before implementation.

performing work for an owner, this contract features one team, referred to as the “Alliance”. This approach sets the stage for the contractor and owner to work together and share the risks and rewards based on the project’s success, which is measured on safety, cost and performance. With common goals in sight, all team players have united in the best interest of the project. Since the inception of the Alliance, Redpath and Goldcorp have worked together to implement project management fundamentals throughout Cochenour Mine and have expanded these methods into production mining as well. Now that the process is in place, tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.Alliance Team Captain, Goldcorp Project Manager Elizabeth Howell comments on the Alliance:Introducing the Alliance team approach didn’t happen overnight, but it is now incorporated throughout Cochenour Mine. Our planning starts with various trade-off studies, which guides us to the correct plan, risk and impact assessment, then our change management process formalizes the new plan and we are ready to execute. The contract alliance stipulates the

From its early beginnings in 2004, back when Redpath was offered a small scope of work at Campbell mine, the work in Red Lake, Ontario, has grown substantially. Today there are more than 200 Redpath employees working on multiple projects, in four different mines. A long-standing relationship with mining company, Goldcorp, has elevated to new heights over the past year as Redpath entered into a Master Service Agreement (MSA) with Corporate Goldcorp. Within this MSA, a definitive agreement was developed with the pilot project being in Red Lake at the Cochenour Mine. Unlike other contracts that see a contractor

common goals of working safely, cost efficiently and within the project timeline, as part of the fee structure. This has empowered the entire team to work together towards the success of the project which translates into the success of both parties.Redpath Area Superintendent Matt Tarlton discusses the scope of work completed at Cochenour Mine:Upper Cochenour completed the shaft to the 3400 level last May and a lateral development program commenced. Off-shaft development is required for multiple reasons, including: access to the mine’s primary ramp system, the

the upper portion of the Cochenour Ore body, and to connect the two mines for ventilation and egress purposes.Equipping of the Egress Raise with services is currently underway and upon completion, a diesel climber will be installed and commissioned for the second means of egress in the mine. This has critical importance to the mine, as gold production can only be legally conducted once a second means of egress is in place. An exploration program is presently being carried out at Upper Cochenour, while sill drifting the ore at Lower Cochenour on three levels is in progress. Long hole stope blasting will commence in the fourth quarter of this year. The final ventilation system at Cochenour mine will require a series of raisebore legs from surface to 5320 level which will act as an exhaust system. It is a pleasure to be involved with developing the Cochenour Project into an operating mine.Redpath Operations Superintendent Gerry Clance, details the work at Campbell Mine and #3 Shaft:

At Campbell Mine, a drift is being driven from

14 level to access the new ore body, HG young. Access to the main ore body is estimated to be completed in a year, and Redpath is currently cutting diamond drill bays for the diamond drill program every 200 - 300 feet. An up ramp to connect 14 level to 13 level is yet another task being taken on, followed by an up ramp from 16 level to 15 level for #3 Shaft which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015. Excavation for an underground maintenance shop for track equipment on 30 level is currently underway, alongside construction and installation of two muck chutes to fill track drift cars for muck handling of ore and waste from the upper levels.A long tom drift from the 27 level down ramp is in progress, while awaiting the arrival of a Jumbo. On 23 level there is a track drift approximately 600 feet long, where another two muck dumps are planned. If you ask Redpath Superintendent Gerry Clance how the work is going, his response is “good” every time, and he is always telling the truth. Goldcorp is always very satisfied with the safe production and high quality of the work.

Redpath Project Controller Robert Sands touches on Red Lake Control functions:Part of Redpath’s commitment to Goldcorp under the alliance agreement has been to provide detailed project management metrics for both Redpath and Goldcorp. This information helps the team make timely and responsible decisions on day-to-day operations, as well as providing in-depth analysis in order to forecast long term project health and estimating accuracy. Intrinsic to these efforts are the advanced reporting and project management systems that Redpath’s Project Management Support Services group has pioneered with operations throughout the years. An experienced site-based projects team is able to isolate project changes and trends, integrate them into financial reporting and recommend courses of action that best fit Goldcorp’s goals and interests. Redpath has identified and overcome many challenges to get to this point, and these are recognized by both Redpath and Goldcorp alike. Working in cooperation with Goldcorp, Redpath plans to expand and improve the reporting systems going into 2016. This is an effort that both parties see the value in, and which has become an integral part of project management at Redpath.

crusher chamber alone measures over 50 m in length x 12 m wide x 15 m high. Below this is the fine ore bin which adds another 16 m to the overall height of the excavation. Naturally, there is an enormous amount of ground support installed throughout these excavations as the spans are extreme and the ground conditions cannot be easily inspected once the areas are put into service. The last benching of the 601 fine ore bin was carried out in May, and the PTRI Mechanized Raise Climber team is now engaged with the installation of proper ground support for the final lift. The conventional work has proven to be a safe method, delivering a high quality product. As with any Redpath project, the guiding principles set in our philosophies and guidelines is the foundation upon which our success is built.

Grosvenor Reaches Another Significant MilestoneBy Andrew BarnesAlthough Redpath’s involvement at the Grosnover Project has now been completed, the hardwork, dedication and commitment shown by the entire Redpath team should be congratulated. The Redpath team broke through into pit bottom 20 days ahead of the stretch target at completion of the Men and Materials Drift after excavating 1,011 m over 91 days, averaging over 11 m per day. Anglo American Coal CEO Seamus French congratulated the teams for their

net metal value of ~$50 per tonne by processing the ore size to <300mm for normal stockpiling at Amole and milling. Pyrite content in the ore is an environmental challenge in the Kasuang fill, with Pyrite material requiring proper

handling and protection to minimize weather exposure. Additionally, GBC trucks hauling to Amole Stockpile is a shorter haul route by an estimated 40 minutes per cycle.Erwin Hutagalung, Roni Assac and the MCM Team, Ashley Giblett, Rodney Crampton, Mansyur, and the Electrical Team are credited for the success of the project which is being carried out safely, on schedule and with outstanding quality. Another Redpath job well done!

Grasberg Block Cave Oreflow System ExcavationBy I Made PasekTwo of the critical elements of PTFI’s Grasberg Block Cave oreflow systems are the crusher stations and fine ore bins. The immense size and production rate of the GBC Mine requires three identical systems be constructed.

As the picture illustrates, these excavations are truly massive. The

Amole Stockpile Project Well UnderwayBy I Made Pasek PT Freeport’s Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Ore Flow system is planned to be in service during the third quarter of 2017. PT Redpath Indonesia (PTRI) GBC development is currently producing 2,000 to 2,500 tonnes per day (tpd) of ~1% CuEq ore that is being dumped as fill in the Kasuang dump area. To avoid sending ore material to Kasuang dump and prevent downstream ARD impact, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has requested that PTRI construct a pad in the MP 74 stockpile for a Mile-72 Jaw Crusher to handle ore bearing material from GBC. The scope of work includes: • Pad dumping preparation (GBC Operation) • Pad slope development (compacting and muck dumping) • Pad construction and grizzly installation (MCM) PTRI Electrical is also installing HV supply from the ACIS (Amole Common Infrastructure Substation) to the transformer; connecting and commissioning the transformer 13.8KV to 240V used for powering the crusher. There are multiple benefits to be obtained by sending this ore to mill, including the reclamation of an estimated

outstanding efforts to drive the TBM through the second drift significantly ahead of schedule.“The use of this technology is a first not just for coal mining in Anglo American but for the Australian coal mining industry and the team can rightly feel proud that they are the pioneers of this new technology in coal.”After the successful completion of the Men and Materials Drift excavation in February, one final challenge remained for the Redpath team at Grosvenor, being the rollout of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Rollout of the TBM was completed at the Conveyor Drift previously, and involved reversing the TBM out of the drift basically fully assembled. This was a huge task in itself, given the machine weighs over 700 tonnes and needs to move back up the 1:8 decline over a distance of one kilometre.

A dedicated and focused team worked to bring the project to reality over the past two and half years. The Anglo American teams to have now commenced development for the underground coal mine. A cooperative collaboration between Redpath and Anglo has produced a world class product using technology and systems that provide a safe and efficient method of drift construction. The teams’ focus on safety was at an all-time high during the final stages of the project, considering the complex and heavy nature of the remaining tasks. The target for zero-harm remained a major focus, and the entire team were determined each shift to meet the target and bring this hallmark project to a successful completion. My thanks and appreciation to my team who provided and maintained the inspiration and commitment to deliver the Grosvenor Project cannot

be understated. The challenges constantly confronting the project were approached and managed each day by people who had the drive to make it happen.

Mopani Mines Projects Sinking DeepBy John ShillaberRedpath Zambia have been keeping busy with two contracts for Mopani Mines Limited (Glencore Xstrata); the Mindola Deeps Project and the Synclinorium Shaft. The Mindola Deeps Project entails the establishment of a +2 km deep, 6 metre diameter, shaft for man, materials and rock hoisting, as well as some 10.5 km of underground infrastructure development.A significant achievement of the Mindola Deeps project is the establishment of a “Bulk Air Cooled” reticulation (BAC) facility whereby refrigerated ventilating air is taken underground via a large air duct system that has been incorporated in the new shaft collar and headgear foundation structures.Constructed within a large open-cut area, the total excavation amounts to some 16,500 m3, to a depth of +/- 18 m below surface. The civil construction work is being done by a civil engineering sub-contractor (WBHO from South Africa), and together with the Redpath sinking crew are working to provide the expertise necessary for the handling of the shaft shutter, construction of the shaft barrel within the total BAC, shaft collar and completion of the headgear foundation structures.Whilst this section of work is scheduled for completion in November 2015 we are currently targeting completion at the end of September 2015.

Agitator Sonar Discharging SystemRedpath Australia’s Cannington project eliminated the need for personnel to be positioned in the interaction zone between the Agitator and the Spray Rig during the supply and application of the shotcrete cycle. Using sonar and video, the agitator can be backed into place and positioned from within the cab, eliminating the need for personnel to put themselves at risk for crush injuries.

Storage Box

Stacking materials safely within the confines of a storage space is of utmost importance to Redpath and our clients. The MCM Team designed a box to contain threaded bar, minimizing tripping hazards and encouraging good housekeeping practices.

Clamp-On Safety Handle

Recognizing that not all pieces of mobile equipment have adequate grab handles for 3 Point Contact entry, innovator Matt D’Antonio created a “clamp-on” handle. Several types of equipment with ROPS/FOPS structures do not allow for welding onto the frame as it defaults certification; this innovation encourages three points of contact, while still maintaining the integrity of the equipment.

The Sonar Discharging system uses a bullet camera (1), sonar sensor and alarm (2), sonar backing plate (mounted on spray unit), cabin monitor and proximity alert (inside the cab).

informed people have the best chance of serving our clients well. At the time of this writing, myself and a Redpath contingent are homeward on a plane after a client meeting. We have worked for this client for over 34 years in Asia, and through conversation, our client was amazed at Redpath’s depth of experience in Europe and Russia primarily through Deilmann-Haniel. We also presented a recent technical paper from Redpath Canada discussing underground development that addressed all of the client’s questions and concerns for a new upcoming project. Knowledge is vital, and given the challenges our clients are faced with in today’s market, it is quite possible that Redpath solutions are available from any one of our regions.
