Southwest District
Andrew Lee Governor’s Project 2013-2014
Serving the Students of the Southwest
CKI clubs should visit their local elementary school and identify a need by September.
With permission from the principal and the benefitting department faculty, CKI clubs should fulfill that need. Example projects could include: a book drive, clothing drive,
school supplies drive, reading program (Serina Pack’s Tomorrow Fund project), school repairs, gardening, planting trees, or donating scooter boards (Governor Lee’s Eagle
Scout Project). The diversity of the schools will determine their needs, but these are some ideas that clubs could suggest. In addition, use this opportunity to connect with
local Key Clubs and Kiwanis Clubs! Start a Terrific Kids or K-Kids together! If money is an issue, apply for grants such as the Disney Friends of Change, Youth Services America, or
CKI Tomorrow Fund. CKI clubs should aim to complete at least one project for a school. However, the more
the better! Please be sure to document the club projects through hours and photographs! They will be displayed at District Convention and your CKI clubs will be recognized for
their great efforts!
This is a wonderful way to give back to your communities. Contact your old elementary schools and visit past teachers! Let them know what you’ve done after elementary
school, let them know about the impact you’ve had in your communities, and let them know how much they’ve influenced you to be the amazing individuals you are today, all
while Serving the Students of the Southwest!
Please do not hesitate to contact your Lieutenant Governors or Governor Lee ([email protected]) if you have any questions or concerns!
Happy Serving!
Southwest CKI
In continuing with his Eagle Scout Project and combining it with Kiwanis’ motto of
“Serving the Children of the World”, Andrew Lee’s Governor’s Project is aimed
at elementary schools, “Serving the Students of the Southwest”. Many schools
are receiving less funding, creating unmet needs. As members of the Kiwanis
Family, it is our duty to do our best to
fulfill those needs!

It is my pleasure to announce that Fall Rally will be almost half
price from last year, at a mere $35 for the whole weekend. For
newcomers, this will be one of the most memorable weekends of your
life. You’ll get a glimpse of how big Circle K really is, bond with Circle
K’ers from other clubs in your team, and have a great time doing
some silly and awesome stuff with everyone. For Fall Rally veterans,
this will be just as exciting as last year. We’ll be keeping some of the
classic activities, while spicing it up with our new team-building low-
ropes course at Kamp Kiwanis. Register now! Forms are due on
September 27th! Bring your superhero/villain swag or something to
make yourself stand out. For example, if I brought my ukulele, I could
be Ukulele Man. It’s going to be a SUPER time at Fall Rally this year.
I’ll see you there, Service League.
Now, I am equally excited to announce my Governor’s Project:
Serving the Students of the Southwest! This sounds an awful lot like
Kiwanis’s “Serving the Children of the World”, doesn’t it? In keeping
with Kiwanis and drawing from my Eagle Scout Project, which involved
helping three elementary schools, my governor’s project is to
essentially fulfill a need at your local elementary school. What you do
is entirely up to you and the school! Read my handout! Clubs will be
recognized at DCON, so get started, impact the Students of the
Southwest, and make your club stand out!
Thanks,
Governor Andrew

Kachina Division Update
And
Treasurer Update
The Kachina division CKI'ers are
busy, busy, busy!
Club Leadership Education
(CLE) went great at ASU! Officers
had the chance to sit down and
strategize how they would tackle their
goals for the year, setting goals such
as completing 1,000 hours of service
for the year. ASU kicked the year off
with a week of socials leading up to
their first meeting. They held
barbeques, a movie night, frozen
yogurt night, board game night, and
A night to hang out and play some
volleyball. ASU has even got one of
their first service projects
accomplished, alongside the
Downtown Scottsdale's Young Professionals club, CKI'ers volunteered at a food and clothing bank.
CKI'ers at NAU are busy planning out their year, kicking off the year with
service projects with Habitat for Humanity, fundraising events. This month one of
NAU CKI Member's Allyson Furey has made the outstanding decision to become a
big sister of Big Brother's Big Sister's of Flagstaff! Congratulations, Allyson!
Great work Kachina division!

Hello, I hope you all are saving up for Fall Rally! It may seem like that Circle K
is an expensive organization times, but don't forget that all the time and effort you put into this organization will be given back! In order to be financially savvy, it is suggested that you come up with a plan. First and
foremost, keep in mind of all the events you would like to attend such as Fall Rally, District Convention, and even International Convention.
Consider the cost of transportation, hotel, food, and souvenirs. Once you have done this, you can develop your own personal budget just for CKI! Don't forget about the 3 in 1 method where you can try asking
your home club and sponsoring Kiwanis Club for a third of the cost and then fundraise or save up the rest. Be on the lookout for your Club
Treasurers to introduce something brand new to keep track of fundraising efforts done by you as an individual. This new system is meant to develop more financial stability for individuals that really want
to go to district events. I am always willing to exchange ideas for those that are looking to attend district events, so please do not hesitate to
contact me at [email protected]. Kevin Wright

Students Team Up to Fight Hunger, or STUFH, is a national non-profit
organization whose purpose is to provide food to those in need of it. STUFH focuses on the collection of food on college campuses. CKI has teamed up
with STUFH to help achieve this very goal. There are many ways to contribute to the organization including, volunteering at your local food
bank or soup kitchen, growing a garden and donating the produce to the local soup kitchen, and of course constructing a food drive. Many clubs
have taken part in CANpetitions such as Castle of Cans or CANstructions. Other schools have done "skip a meal" in which the money they save is
donated to their local food bank. The possibilities are endless.
For more ideas and to learn more about the CKI and STUFH partnership, please watch these great videos!

Scare up some funds and fun this Halloween by participating
in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. It’s a great opportunity to collect donations instead of candy or to bring
club members together for a fabulous event or party. All money collected by
Kiwanis-family members through Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF will once again
support The Eliminate Project and help save moms and babies.
Did you know? A proud participant in Trick-or-Treat for
UNICEF since 1994, The K-Family has raised more than US$6 million for child survival and
development programs around the world—from efforts to eliminate iodine
deficiency disorder to HIV/AIDS initiatives in Kenya and Swaziland. Starting in
2012 Key Club joined other Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs to Trick-or-
Treat for UNICEF to raise money for The Eliminate Project.
You could raise funds door-to-door, host a trunk-or-treat, zombie walk, horror
fest, pumpkin smash, “Twilight” dance, haunted house or even an old-fashioned
pumpkin pie baking (or eating) contest…or come up with your own idea!
HOW TO TAKE PART The process is easy! You can participate in five simple steps: Decide with your club what kind of fundraiser you’ll do.
Order your collection boxes.
Collect donations.
Fill out the gift form and submit it with your club’s donations.
Celebrate! You’re helping save moms and babies.
Where to send funds Once you’ve collected all of your donations, send a check or money order (made
payable to the Kiwanis International Foundation) and your completed gift form
to:
The Eliminate Project: Campaign Office
Kiwanis International Foundation
3636 Woodview Trace
Indianapolis, IN 46268 USA
ATTN: Trick-or-Treat
Be sure to write your club name or club number on the memo line
of the check and send an email to Pearla, our SWD CKI Eliminate Ambassador.
It’s important to send your check directly to the Kiwanis International Foundation
so we can keep track of all funds raised by Kiwanis-family clubs. Together,
Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs like yours plan to raise US$7 million of the
total US$110 million Kiwanis will raise by 2015 for The Eliminate Project.
This year, the Service Leadership Program goal is to beat last year’s Trick-or-
Treat total and raise more than US$1 million. We need help from you and your
club!
Recognition and resources BANNER PATCHES Clubs that raise and submit more than US$250 by December 31, 2013, will
receive a special banner patch. So don’t forget to send in the funds you raise by
the deadline!

The University of Arizona Circle K International Club
has kicked off the year with a great start, filled with many
new faces, dedicated CKI veterans, fun socials, and
exciting projects for our members. We have participated in
a variety of local service projects this month including the
JC Penny Shopping Spree, volunteering for the Tucson
Community Food Bank, Ben’s Bells, and Ronald McDonald
House.
At the JC Penny Shopping Spree, members partnered with
children from our community. With $100 provided by
Kiwanis for each child, members helped buy back-to-school
clothes and shoes for the kids. The children were
extremely happy to go back to school in style, feeling
happy and confident and knowing someone cares for them.
At the Tucson Community Food Bank, members
helped package canned and dry foods for the less fortunate
in Tucson. The boxes of food we create are used as
supplemental packages for a family’s household. Each time
we volunteer at the food bank, we package enough food to
support thousands of families in our area.
Ben’s Bells Project, a local non-profit organization in
Tucson, is dedicated to spreading kindness in the
community. The work of Ben’s Bells Project includes
making ceramic bells by hand and hanging them around
Tucson for people to pick up. When one finds a bell, he or
she does an act of kindness for someone else, keeping the
bell as a reminder to be kind, or passing it on to send the
message to someone else. Our members helped paint the
ceramic tokens and bells, preparing them to be sent out.
Arizona State University CKI Club joined us and we
exchanged club T-shirts to wear our common goal of
service with pride.
Lastly, our club worked with the Ronald McDonald
House. At the Ronald McDonald House, our volunteers
made a pasta lunch for those families staying at the house
while their child was in the hospital. Ronald McDonald
House is always a great project because our members can
directly see the impact they are making.
We began putting on mini-socials before every
meeting this semester. Some of these mini socials have
included meeting up to enjoy Eegees, a special Tucson
slushy, finding college landmarks in our school scavenger
hunt, and playing board games during a club game night.
These mini-socials have been a great way for members to
get to know one antother.
We look forward to an awesome semester of service
and fellowship as we continue to serve our community and
develop long-lasting relationships. Bear down!

Zachary Gastelum

Trivia Questions
Each month there will be a section where you have a chance to be entered into a drawing for multiple Kiwanis Family memorabilia, gift cards, and other cool prizes! The drawing will happen at District Convention. If you can’t attend and are chosen for a prize we will mail one to you. Answer all three of the Trivia Question in a message to the SWS on Facebook by October 15th to be entered! The first person to respond will be entered to win a prize!
1. Little Red Riding Hood was called what in the original story by the Brothers Grimm?
2. Whose tomb was found in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt?
3. What is the mission statement of Aktion club?
Congratulations to Perla for answering all three questions correctly!
This month we have not done anything with our preferred charities, though in
less than two weeks we will be hosting a kickball tournament to raise club funds
and funds for Eliminate! We are really looking forward to it and are very excited.
Since school started, our club has worked with Habitat for Humanity three times,
on different weekends, as well as promotional fairs on campus. We helped the
Habitat group in Clovis twice, first moving them into a new building for their
ReStore, then helping them tear down walls in preparation for renovations! After
that, we helped the group in Portales with installing sheet rock in a home they
are building, and with our help they got the entire ceiling put up in the house.
This weekend we are planning on going to our local fire department and washing
their trucks and helping them with their station. We are also planning several
projects for October, and are getting people excited for Fall Rally! We are really
hoping to get a bunch of people to go this year. (the first picture are installing the ceiling, the rest are from demolition)

#chooseCKI Official Visit of David Limjoco, CKI Trustee
Subregion B to CKI Rio Grande Division
Rio Grande Division was pleased to have a special visit by David Limjoco, who is one of eight
international trustees. He represents Subregion B. It is a
special honor to be able to host David’s visit. During his visit to
Rio Grande Division, it was filled around the clock with activities. When David stepped off the
airplane in El Paso, we were off to meet with Kiwanis members from
four different El Paso Kiwanis clubs and two Kiwanis Lt. Governors. Our purpose in
meeting in El Paso, was to work on formal plans to get a club
started again at UTEP. Thanks to all of these Kiwanians who truly do support CKI. Also, thanks to
Kiwanis incoming Lt. Governor, Mike Dallago, for driving us and
helping with this part of the visit and our next stop Las Cruces. We had an outstanding
dinner at historic La Posta built in 1840, in Old Mesilla, with Kiwanis
members from three different clubs from that area, the NMSU CKI Faculty advisor, NMSU CKI
President Mirabella Macias, and other CKI recruits and NMSU
members. The dinner honored our Trustee and also helped to strengthen our Kiwanis Family
Relations. Afterwards, we were off to a CLE training of officers at
NMSU. This was a great time to get to know CKI at NMSU and help them start their year!
The next morning we were off to the City of Rocks state park
on the way to Silver City where we had the chance to see and
climb on incredible volcanic rock formations formed over 30 million
years ago.
There are so many important choices to make in life and you've
all made the right choice to join CKI. Now
it's time to make sure that others choose CKI
too. This new CKI video explores how we bring service, leadership, and
fellowship together! Check out the new
video [HERE]! Also be sure to start
using #chooseCKI throughout social
media! It's a great way to spark conversation on why returning
members chose CKI and why new members
should too!

After that, we headed to visit WNMU. After a campus tour, we had an afternoon
filled with fun and service! Our service project was to help pack 270 backpacks
filled with food at the Volunteer Center. This helped to launch this year’s Alimento para el Nino food backpack program for
needy children in area schools. The program offers an opportunity for children
living in home situations where there is not enough food have much needed food to get through the weekend. CKI WNMU
Advisor, Lori Bonomo, with David Limjoco, and me, Serina Pack, were very happy to
spend our afternoon helping children. Afterward, it was off to a successful recruitment event for WNMU CKI on
campus. With pizza and friends coming together, the values of CKI were
discussed. WNMU CKI president, Kale Ghan, kicked off her year at this event.
The night was completed, when the President of WNMU, Dr. Shepard and his wife, joined WNMU CKI members,
members of Kiwanis Club of Silver City, and Bob Carson, Southwest District CKI
Administrator, at an historic location north of Silver City, Pinos Altos Restaurant and Opera House. CKI WNMU paused for a
moment for a photo opportunity on the 1803 stage inside the historic site as it
rained outside, before the farewell dinner to Rio Grande Division that honored David’s official visit. On Friday, I drove
David to Tucson for the rest of his visit to the Southwest District. What an incredible
time it was. Overall, David’s visit involved five universities, in three states, as he traveled over 600 miles by car. Thanks
David for coming. I hope it will be a time you will long remember.
Sincerely Submitted, Serina Pack – Lt. Governor Rio Grande
Division
