‘ROUND THE BENZ

Sunday, 22 September 20139:00 a.m.

Fall is coming and that means Oktober-fest! What better way to celebrate than at a great German restau-rant, Westfalen Hof, in Golden, CO. This will be a perfect destination for a Sunday fun run. Set in the picturesque Coal Creek Canyon, this trip will be a great way to close out the summer driving season. It will be particularly scenic if the leaves have started to turn.

We’ll gather in the Safeway parking lot at 3275 W. Colorado Ave at 9:00 a.m. From there we’ll work our way up Highway 24 to Highway 285 and parts north. It will be a beautiful drive.

From plate-sized weinerschnitzel to other

traditional favorites like sauerbraten, stro-ganoff, rindsroulade, Hungarian goulash, and kohlrouladen, Westfalen Hof has all your German favorites.

Their menu contains an extensive list of dishes, and it also provides some history of the most famous dishes. Did you know Queen Marie, wife of Ludwig XV, created the Koeniginpastetchen, or that Westfaelischer sauer-braten is a sweet-and-sour dish, prepared from a tradi-

tional recipe, where the gravy is made with pumpernickel bread and raisins?

Come along with us so you can try these dishes for yourself. Reservations are a must at this eatery so reserve your spot now by calling Judy at 719-576-9737 or email her at [email protected]. Deadline for reservations is 15 Septem-ber.

Mercedes-Benz has finally decided to jump into the world of Head-Up Displays and will offer it as an optional extra on the upcoming 2014 S-Class and next-gener-ation C-Class. Initially weary of the tech, Mercedes has apparently come around to the idea of displaying pertinent informa-tion in a convenient spot.

Mercedes stated that it doesn’t make sense for them to only make it available on one model. To make money on this program, customers will have to have access to it on a variety of models. This means you can expect to see the HUD

being rolled out on a wider range of ve-hicles as time goes on.

The type of information to be displayed includes speed, navigation information, and any potential warning lights that might pop up. Benz engineers previously felt that a HUD acted as a distracting device to a driver, but it’s clear they have come around. That, or the marketing and sales folks forced the engineers to cave a bit. Seeing as these are German engineers, we don’t think they caved but rather saw the popped-up lights right in front of their eyes.

Mercedes News

Though sum-mer will be of-ficially ending soon, Septem-ber looks to be one of the fullest for the Pikes Peak Section with some great opportunities to drive your star car before the complete onset of fall.

First, don’t miss the highlight of our sum-mer events - the Drive-In Movie Night on Sunday, 1 September, again hosted by Dan and Cheryl Kerbs. We always have a great time at this event, with great food and good friends. Nostalgia reigns su-preme since where else can you snuggle with your honey at the movies?

Second, if you haven’t been on a fall

color tour, please join us on Sunday, 22 September for our fall drive to Westfalen Hof in Golden, CO. The scenic route in-cludes Hwy 24 to Hwy 285, terminating in Coal Creek Canyon. The food is superb at this tucked-away gem and we will be able to take advantage of the beautiful scenic drive to practice our mountain driving. Dust off your SLK or SL for these twisty mountain roads.

Third, we are one of the only Sections in the country to host “off-highway” events. If you have an ML, GL, or G-wagen (even a J-class is welcome), please join us for our annual Off-Road Weekend, 27-29 September in Salida, CO. Our trailmeis-ter, Tom Croak, has, as usual, selected trails that are scenic and match the skill level of our group.

As always, drive safe, and I will see you down the road.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

Off-Road Weekend Friday - Sunday,

27-29 September 2013We’re hoping for some good weather and beautiful fall color at the end of September as we head out into the mountains for our annual, 2-day Off-Road Weekend. Our destination this year is Salida, CO, located in the Arkansas River Valley. The community of 5,500 is sur-rounded by Forest Service and Depart-ment of Wildlife lands, a haven for bikers, campers, hikers, skiers, and hunt-ers. It is a lovely natural setting with several con-verging moun-tain ranges that boast 15 peaks that reach over 14,000 feet in el-evation...perfect for our off-road adventure. The Arkansas River winds its way through the valley and along the downtown of Salida, inviting rafters, kayakers, fishers, and “beach lovers” alike.

Salida has a charming downtown area, the largest historical downtown district in Colorado, home to blocks of Victorian buildings with fantastic restaurants, inspiring galleries, tempting boutiques, and outdoor sports stores. There is an array of shops for kitchens, kids, books, knitters and quilters. It’s a great place to stock up or find a unique gift to take home. So you can see that this weekend is not just for SUVs. And by the way, non-Mercedes SUVs are also welcome on this event. It’ll give you a chance to see up close what MLs and GLs can do.

Our trailmeister, Tom Croak, has selected trails to challenge but not intimidate our intrepid off-roaders. Old Monarch Pass, Marshall Pass, Tincup Pass, and Whale Hill are some of the trails under consid-eration. He will maximize opportunities

for fall color with manageable trails in his route planning.

We’ll be staying at the Holiday Inn Ex-press (7400 US Hwy 50 W) in downtown Salida. Rates are $109 per night ($131 including tax & fees) for a king or double queen room. Please call them directly to reserve your room and mention MBCA. The phone number is 719-539-8500. Reservations must be made by 13 Sep-tember to get our group rate. There will be an event fee of $20 per person for the

weekend.

So, here’s the schedule: For folks who would like to caravan to Salida, we will meet at the Black Bear Cof-fee & Tea Lodge, 6550 S Academy Blvd at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. We will head down Hwy 115 and then con-

tinue to Salida via US Hwy 50, arriving about 11:00. After a stop for

lunch, we’ll do a short off-road trip to get our feet and tires wet before head-ing back to the hotel. Our hospitality suite will be up and run-ning by 4:30

p.m. Dinner will be on your own. There are many excellent choices and we have some recommendations.

Saturday will be an all-day drive, de-parting at 9:00 a.m. We will provide box lunches at $10 per box or you can pro-vide your own. Again our hospitality suite will be open upon our return from the hills. Sunday is check-out day. We are planning an optional off-road drive in the morning for those who would like one last crack at the trails.

Please RSVP to Judy Bennett at 719-576-9737 or bennett912@comcast by 13 September.

Brewery Tour - 19 October 2013Following the October breakfast at The Egg & I, the Pikes Peak Section will travel to Fort Collins to visit the Budweiser Brew-ery and Clydesdale Hamlet where we’ll take the complimentary guided tour. The tour is a walking tour and lasts about one hour and fifteen minutes. Parts of the tour

are outdoors.

The Clydesdales can be viewed on this tour at the Clydesdale Hamlet. Cameras are always welcome, so be sure to take lots of pictures. Guests are

welcome to enjoy their favorite beer sam-ples on the outdoor patio where we can view the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

There are two additional options for tours:

1. Beer School is a fun, interactive and informative experience that explains the steps for beer appreciation. The class is

about 45 minutes long and introduces you to a variety of beer styles, ingredients, proper pouring techniques and food-pair-ing suggestions. This program is limited to guests who are 21 years of age or older, and offered on a first come, first serve basis. The cost is $10 per person.

2. Stimulate your senses and satisfy your curiosity as you explore the art of brewing on the Anheuser-Busch Beermaster Tour. The tour provides a unique opportunity to experience a behind-the-scenes look at the brewing of Budweiser. You will visit the Brew House, Starting Cellar, Packag-ing Facility, Beechwood Aging Cellar and Clydesdale Hamlet. Reservations are re-quired. This is a 2-hour walking tour; cost is $25 for visitors ages 21+ and $10 for visitors ages 13-20.

D-I-Y Tech Session - 17 November 2013It’s hard to believe but summer is draw-ing to a close. What better way to do that than at our fall Do-It-Yourself Tech Session.

Come on down to Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs on Sunday, 17 Novem-ber. Put your car up on the rack, check the antifreeze, put on new brakes, change the oil or whatever repairs or maintenance you want to do. It costs just $10 plus parts. After having breakfast at the Golden Cor-ral for the last 6 years, we think it’s time for a change. So we’ve found an alterna-tive in the newest The Egg and I restaurant. It met all of our criteria: it’s brand new, we can order from the menu as much or as little as we wish, service is friendly

and quick, and the food is delicious. It’s centrally located at 733 N. Academy Blvd. (just east of the Citadel Mall in the Citadel Crossing Shopping Center). Join us for our inaugural Egg

President’s “Odd” Rally RecapEveryone had an oddly good time at our annual President’s Rally. After a great breakfast at the Golden Corral, Presi-dent Andrew lined us up in the parking lot and launched 7 cars into the oddly defined unknown. Armed only with the clue sheets, a clipboard, and a pencil, we were on our own.

Those who had experienced previous Machiavelllian Nelson rallies were more than a little intimidated. Imagine our sur-prise when we were able to figure out the first clue, then the second, and then the third. We were on a roll!

We were treated to a 50-mile drive all over town looking for the odd, the bizarre, and the left-brained. From Stetson Hills, we travelled south on Academy over Airport to historic areas of Colorado Springs and then to the Broadmoor area and the west side. We finished up driving through Old Colorado City to downtown where we all missed Humpty Dumpty on the City Admin-istration buliding - it’s there, I checked!

It was a beautiful drive and we ended up at the Navajo Hogan for a great lunch and hoots of disbelief when the answers to the rally questions were revealed. We saw graffiti, an “ore” house, railroad over-

pass murals, and a scarecrow guarding a Christmas tree - all while watching for 7-Elevens and minding the speed limits. Whew, it was exhausting but fun.

Everyone walked away with an odd prize or two, courtesy of Julie and Andrew. First place went to the Bennetts, second place went to Tom Croak, rid-ing solo, and third place went to new car owners, Henry and Sylvia Russell. Be sure to join us next year for a glimpse into the wacky, zany, and crazy world of the Nelsons.

Henry and Sylvia Russell took delivery of their latest and great-est Mercedes-Benz - a beautiful 2014 Capri Blue E-class. It has all the bells and whistles - so many that will it take many an enjoyable road trip to sort them all out.

The Pikes Peak Section was on hand to welcome the new E-class into our Section fam-ily of vehicles. Thanks to Dave Williamson and Andrea Hansen for putting on a great spread and providing the toasting beverages.

Mercedes-Benz owners - Beware! Thieves have excellent taste. The Na-tional Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) has published the results of a new study that looked at the rates of car theft around the country, with the focus being on luxury cars. The organization, which works closely with law enforcement agencies to gather its data, has found that the most popular lux-ury car among thieves is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

NICB researchers found that 4,384 luxury cars were reported sto-len in the U.S. between the period of the study, which ran from January 1, 2009 until December 31, 2012. Of these, 485 were various C-Class models. The next most stolen luxury car was the BMW 3-Series, with 471 reported thefts, followed by the Infiniti G series, with 405 reported thefts.

Mercedes-Benz was a popular make among thieves, with two more of its models registering among the top ten most sto-len luxury cars. They were the E-Class at position four on the list and the S-Class at position ten.

It should be noted that luxury cars only account for a fraction of the total number of vehicles stolen in the country. Another or-ganization, the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), recently published its own list of the most stolen cars and none of the luxury cars in the NICB list made the top ten. The most stolen car according to the HLDI was the Ford F-250 pickup truck.

Getting back to the NICB study, the re-

searchers found that California had the highest rate of luxury car theft, account-ing for 1,063 of the 4,384 total luxury car thefts. South Dakota and Wyoming tied for the least luxury car thefts, both registering just one theft each.

Part of the reason for the high theft rates in California, researchers say, is due to crime gangs using the Port of Los Angeles to ship

cars overseas. Often, they rent or lease cars using aliases and then ship them out of the country.

Of the 4,384 luxury cars stolen, 713 re-main unrecovered at the time of the study’s conclusion date. That

translates to a recovery rate of 83.7 per-cent. The Infiniti G had the highest number of unrecovered thefts at 83, followed by the Mercedes-Benz E-Class with 80 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class with 78.

Below is a list of the ten most stolen luxury cars and the number of thefts:

1) Mercedes-Benz C-Class - 485

2) BMW 3-Series - 471

3) Infiniti G - 405

4) Mercedes-Benz E-Class - 381

5) Cadillac CTS - 326

6) BMW 5-Series - 256

7) Lincoln MKZ - 226

8) Acura TSX - 190

9) Lexus IS - 177
