S ummer has flown by and with the start of the new school year it won’t be long until the sights and smells of fall will begin to come our way. Although this will lead to us getting back into a regular routine, it also means that our busy schedules will kick into full gear. I want to encourage you as you plan for all the important activities that will fill up your schedule to also plan for the spiritual opportunities available in this coming season. First, I am excited about kicking off our new Wednesday night lineup that will begin in September. Our church’s theme for 2013 has been “Equipping the Saints,” and we are using our Wednesday evenings for this important ministry. In order to involve more people and to make this a great night of discipleship for all ages, we have made a few tweaks to the sched- ule. (1) On September 4, we will have our first fellowship meal at a special time of 5:30 and we will introduce each of the classes that will be available in the fall. You will also be able to register your children for the new AWANA year on that evening. (2) In order to give peo- ple more time to get from work and be able to participate in classes, the weekly mealtime will be from 5:00-6:15 PM. All classes will begin at 6:15 PM. (3) KidsCore will meet on Sunday evenings beginning September 8 and AWANA will be moving to Wednesday evenings on September 11. This way there will be fewer interruptions to its schedule in comparison to the Sunday evening schedule. (4) To kick off the year of discipleship, on September 11, we will have a special guest, James White, teaching on “What Every Christian Needs to Know About Islam.” James is the leading expert in this field. His newest book on Islam has been endorsed by John MacArthur, R. Albert Mohler Jr., and numerous other SBC leaders. This will be an exciting kick-off to our new year for our adult classes. (5) On September 18, the normal schedule for all adult classes will begin. I urge you to make the discipleship of you and your family a priority in your schedule. Second, our Great Commission Focus Week is being moved to the week of October 13 th . As we move forward in our goal to adopt an Unengaged Unreached People Group, we have the privilege of having John Brady, Vice President for Global Strategy with the IMB, to be our keynote speaker. John is a second- generation missionary who served for twelve years as the IMB strategy leader in North Af- rica and the Middle East. He is a passionate and incredible communicator, and we are so thankful to have him with us to help us catch the vision and strategize for taking the next step in adopting an UUPG. Please add this to your calendar for this fall as well. It is very easy for us to allow our schedules to quickly be filled with activities that are good and important, but not take time away from those things that can grow us and strengthen us spiritually. At FBC, we offer many opportu- nities for you to be strengthened spiritually. I have just highlighted a couple of significant ones above. Whatever you do, don’t let an- other fall begin without making the most im- portant things a priority of your schedule. As important as all the other things that you do are, none will have the kind of eternal impact that feeding your soul spiritually will do. It’s going to be a great year for FBC, I can’t wait to see all that God is going to do. 103 E. Thank you to everyone who sent cards, prayed, and called when my son passed away.

Growing up, I received one basic lesson in apologetics. I was taught that if anyone brings up objections against my Christian faith or the Bible that I should tell them my faith story. I should tell them how God has worked in my life to bring about certain changes: how I’m a better, happier, and more content person because of Jesus. My teachers would explain that people can re-fute the things in the Bible or in Christian theology, but no one can question my life experiences.

There are several problems with this, but I’ll only point out two. First, and most plainly: this idea runs against the Bible. Peter en-couraged believers, “always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15). We should strive to know the Scriptures and the con-tent of our Christian faith such that we are able to defend it against opponents!

The second major problem with this approach is that anyone in any religion can share their story. After all, who can question any-one’s experience? At the end of the day, we really can’t deny a Mormon’s story about how they’ve become a better person: how he quit drinking, smoking, and abusing his family. He’s just wrong about how he was able to do such things (surely it was God’s common grace). Knowledge of the Bible and Christian theology is indispensible to every believer.

The Christian’s personal story is a wonderful and beautiful thing. However, our experience can never supplant the timeless truth of God’s overarching redemptive story in Jesus Christ. Our stories are simply applications of this timeless truth. And while we need (and are so very grateful for!) personal application, we must focus on God’s story above our own experience of it lest we lose the power behind our stories. After all, our experience is often clouded by our own misconceptions, too.

This is true in our worship services, too. It is wonderful that God has worked in each of our lives, and we ought to share those things with each other. But the story that should be held highest and clearest in all of our services is the story of the gospel. The objective truths of the gospel should shape the message we preach, the prayers we pray, the songs we sing, the passages we read, and the ordinances we practice. And as we familiarize our-selves with this story and the richness of grace therein, we will be better equipped to articulate it in every facet of our lives, includ-ing witnessing encounters.

Let’s work to view our stories through the lens of the gospel, not the other way around. We aren’t the center of God’s redemptive plan. Jesus is.

Guys get a bad rap for not being willing to ask for help. It can be something as small as not pulling over to ask for directions, and sometimes it can be as serious as ignoring that pain or ache until its too late to do something about it. For me, my issue is not want-ing to follow instructions. Have you ever bought a piece of furni-ture from IKEA, only to open the box of no less than one billion pieces and screws of at least 50 different sizes? And then you look at the instructions that look like Egyptian hieroglyphics. Putting together IKEA furniture should be some prison punishment. It's awful. As parents you might feel the same way. None of us walked out of the hospital with a set of instructions on how to handle all the responsibilities of bring a parent. Yet, we are the ones God has trusted with our children. So, lets look to what His Word says about how we're supposed to do that task. This fall on Wednesday evenings, beginning September 4th, Rachel and I will be teaching a class called Shepherding a Childs Heart based on the book by the same title written by Tedd Tripp. It is an excellent resource that Rachel and I use almost on a daily basis as we try to shepherd our three. Let’s face it, if God is going to give me this awesome task of shepherding these three people into a being an accurate reflection of who He is, then I'd probably better see what His Word says as to how I do that. So, come join us on Wednesdays this fall and let's encourage and sharpen each other to be the best shepherds we can. Hope to see you there.

Parents seem to fall into two camps around the start of school; those who love it, and those who don’t. Neither camp is inherently better than the other but each seems to fall according to the fol-lowing lines: One group consists of strange and unique creatures who seem to favor a scheduled, structured environment where everything has a time and a place and there is always something to be done. The other consists of those of us who are normal and shy away from the routine and structure that the school calendar brings. One thing we all can agree on is that once the school year arrives, it becomes necessary (especially for larger families) to op-erate on a schedule. As you are developing that schedule, there is no better time to introduce a family devotion into that schedule. There is no training that will prove as useful for bringing a child to full maturity and giving them the tools that they need to succeed, than to train them in the Scriptures. If you need resources to help train your children, regardless of age, feel free to contact me and I would love to share some valuable resources with you.

Pastors’ Q&A

A A very deep issue, indeed! I think the Gospel Project does a good job of giving some basic points to address the matter. I'll just add a few things to it.

1) These questions arise because we are working to make sense of how several clear biblical truths fit together. The doc-trine of the Trinity is a classic example of this. The Bible teaches that: (1) there is only one God, (2) the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all distinct persons, and (3) the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God. The word "Trinity" is never in the Bible, but it is our theological way of saying these truths do not contradict each other, but in fact work together. Likewise, the question about God's presence in Hell is an attempt to reconcile several clear biblical truths: (1) God is omnipresent, (2) Hell is a real physical place, and (3) in some sense, people in Hell are separated from God's presence (2 Thess. 1:9).

2) The Bible really doesn't address this tension as directly as we might like. So wherever we land, we must uphold these clear truths about God. We cannot deny God's omnipresence (by saying something like "he's not REALLY everywhere"); we can't deny that Hell exists (by saying something like "hell is a state of mind, not a place"); we can't deny a passage like 2 Thess. 1:9 (by saying something like "God is present in Hell in the same way he's present in a worship service").

3) The Gospel Project's answer, as basic as it is, is the easiest solution - even if there still remains some tension. The Scrip-tures do indeed indicate that God is present in different ways in different places. Sometimes His presence brings certain judgment and destruction. Other times His presence brings peace, comfort, protection, and deliverance.

4) The clarifying point I'd bring to their explanation is this: For the believer, God's presence will ultimately bring us joy, peace, comfort, and the like. For the unbeliever, God's pres-ence will ultimately bring terror, fear, and judgment. God is everywhere, but people experience His presence differently depending on their relationship with Him. For some, it's a wonderful thing. For others, it's a terrible thing. His character doesn't change; our relationship to Him does. For the one to whom Jesus' work has not been applied… God's wrath re-mains against him, and will for eternity if they remain oppo-nents of God (Rom. 1-2, particularly 2:1-11). What we mean by "separated from God's presence" (a la 2 Thess.) should be clarified: the presence from which the unbeliever is separated is that glorious and mighty presence that the believer will ex-perience in eternity (read the Thessalonians passage in its con-text and this will become clearer). God is nevertheless present in Hell, just not in a way that we want to experience. Praise God that we don't have to, by the blood of Jesus Christ!

Q In Session 4 of the summer Gospel Project lessons, when discussing God's omnipresence, our Sunday School class talked about God's presence in Hell. The lesson said God is present in Hell but in different ways. I guess I am locked into the idea that Hell is the absence of God (2 Thess. 1:9). I am sure this is me trying to wrap my head around a very deep issue. Can you help?

The Bible says in Matthew 10:28, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can de-stroy both soul and body in hell.” It is amazing how much atten-tion we give our bodies and how little to our souls. Jesus reminds us that nothing is more valuable than our souls. A well known speaker would begin his seminar by holding up a $50 bill and ask, “Who would like to have this $50 bill?” Of course, many hands in the audience went up. Then he would crumple the $50 bill up and ask the same question, and the response would be the same. Then he would throw it on the floor and grind it into the floor with his shoe and then ask, “Now who still wants it?” Still, the hands went into the air. Then he would say, “My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $50. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumbled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the cir-cumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worth-less. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value in God’s eyes.” Give Christ your life today and discover that He can bring beauty out of ashes.

The Peacemaker: A Biblical Guide to Resolving Personal Conflict (Ken Sande)

The basic attitude of our flesh says, "I deserve what's mine, and I'll get it no matter what it takes." Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers." This book offers a comprehensive and practical theology for dealing with conflict, resolving issues using godly methods of reconciliation, humility, and submission. It's a very practical and easy read and even comes in an edition for students. You would do well to read this book. You would do even better to live by the principles it explains.
