Now is the time to sell!

When looking to sell, ask for more...Tom Moore!

Tom Moore, Realtor®

Direct: 904-899-6428Email: [email protected]: tommoorehomes.com

Why is this such a favorable climate for sellers?1. Stronger demand coming from buyers: Sellers in many markets see strong demand from alarger pool of buyers, including first-timers, boomerang buyers (previous owners who lost theirhome to forclosure), as well as traditional owner-occupant buyers.

2. Home prices are skyrocketing: Single-family home and condo sellers in the first half of 2015sold an average of 13 percent above their original purchase price.

Median sales prices of exisiting-homes pushed above the previous 2006 peak to a record highin June, the National Association of Realtors® reported last week. The median existing-home pricefor all housing types was $236,400 in June - surpassing the peak median sales price set in July 2006at $230,400.

3. Sellers have less competition: Inventories of for-sale homes remain tight, forcing buyers tocompete for a limited supply.

FOOD TRUCKS AROUND JAX

Sandwiches are HUGEThe Happy Grilled Cheese (904) 451-0126 thehappygrilledchees.wix.com/

The sandwiches are huge, the menu combinations are fantastic and at the end of the day, it’s a fancy grilled cheese sandwich, you really can’t go wrong.

They always set up tables and chairs outside, so you can either buy and run or buy and sit down to enjoy your sandwich.

My favorite HGC option remains the slightly Frankensteinesque Happy Melt, which starts off as a simple American Cheddar on your choice of bread and allows you to add on anything your heart desires (from their list of add-ons) to create the cheesy Monster of your dreams: in my case, I simply add raw onion and bacon to tick off my love of crunch, flavor and contrast.

Their prices are excellent for the portion size you get, the menu is varied

and offers some great variations on the home comfort of a Grilled Cheese sandwich and I heartily recommend making the effort to find your nearest Happy Grilled Cheese truck location and enjoying their food.

Awesome Flavor ProfilesThe Salty Fig Food Truck (904) 337-0146

I’m LOVING that Jacksonville finally has some food trucks here in town and was especially delighted to try out The Salty Fig.

This food truck changes its menu weekly based on what’s in season, which rocks my socks. I usually enjoy this truck on Wednesdays at the Kings Street Farmers Market. I usually get there right around when they open so they haven’t run out of anything yet :^) Be sure to like the Jax Truckies Facebook page for daily updates on truck locations.

I am in love with everything they’ve done with pork belly so far, and also really love the flavor profiles they put together in their salads. Do yourself a favor

and try them out when you’re in their neighborhood (or when they’re in yours!)

Taco PerfectionMr Taco Food Truck (904) 607-1841

I have been here many times before but I never had a yelp account lol. But the tacos are PERFECTION! And the serving size is more than filling. I just can’t get enough. Very authentic! I couldn’t find the proper food truck location, this food truck is now at the corner of Lenox and Lane on westside, and has been for the weeks I’ve been coming here, not on Phillips hwy.

Why You Should Aerate Your Lawn this Fall

Fall is a great time to aerate the lawn. Whether you do it yourself or hire a lawn care professional to do it for you, aeration at least once per year provides a number of benefits to your lawn, say experts.

The main benefit is to relieve compaction and increase pore space, which promotes gas exchange and microbial activity in the soil and creates a better, more supportive environment for lawn health and vitality. Aeration also promotes better soil drainage, which helps keep disease at bay and allows more water to percolate into the soil from rain or irrigation, meaning less runoff and more water getting where it needs to go.

“Ideal aeration timing depends on turf type and geography,” says Lloyd Von Scheliha of Exmark Manufacturing, a manufacturer of turf care equipment. “But annual aeration provides valuable agronomic benefits to virtually any turfgrass.”With that in mind, here are some tips from the experts at Exmark to get the most benefits from aeration

• Timing: Ideally, aeration should take place during times of active growth to help with recovery. Avoid aeration during times of heat stress or times preceding dormancy. It’s typically best to aerate cool season grasses in the spring or fall, while with warm season grasses, it’s best to aerate in late spring or early fall.

• Proper equipment: Use gear that meets the needs of your lawn. For example, Exmark offers a 30-inch Stand-On aerator that makes quick work of even large properties with the ability to easily maneuver around landscape features.

• Follow-up: After aeration, it’s a good idea to water the lawn, as well as a good time to apply fertilizer or overseed if needed. Be careful not to apply a pre-emergent if you plan to overseed, however, as it will prevent the new seed from growing.

Don’t let this important, but often overlooked lawn care task escape your attention this season. At the ideal time for your lawn, either take it upon yourself or hire a professional to give your grass a better chance at thriving. (StatePoint)

Fall Home and Garden Clean-Up Project Tips

Fall is the ideal season to tick items off your home exterior to-do list. The weather is finally cooler, making the work more enjoyable; and a thorough fall clean-up will give you peace of mind all winter. Your MVP during home maintenance season can be the pressure washer. Up to 75 times more powerful than a garden hose, a pressure washer is a versatile tool that offers an efficient way to get a variety of cleaning tasks done.

Deck: Once you’re ready to stash away outdoor furniture for the season, remember to wash it down first for a deeper clean than a garden hose can provide. Before moving these items into storage, first let them dry completely. Ensure your deck is free of mold and debris. A thorough clean will also serve to prep your deck for weatherproofing with a stain or sealant (another useful task to include on your fall checklist.)

Outdoor Surfaces: Rejuvenate driveways, patios,

sidewalks and other large flat surfaces quickly and with no streaking using accessories like the Briggs & Stratton Surface Cleaner that works on a 14-inch diameter in one stroke. It features a dome shape to control overspray to protect walls and flower beds.

Grill: Cleaning your grill is a breeze with a pressure washer. First disconnect the propane tank and move it away from the area. Disconnect any electrical lines. Prop up the hood and remove the grates. Treat the entire grill with a degreasing solution, working from the bottom of the cart up to the grill bed. Let the degreaser work for a few minutes. Be careful around gas hoses, connections, electrical components or heating elements. Using a general medium-pressure spray pattern, flush detergent and rinse any residue, working from the top down. Let the grill dry thoroughly, then coat with nonstick oil to help reduce future build-up.

Safety: Operate a pressure washer only outside, far away from windows, doors and vents to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide gas from accumulating and potentially being drawn towards occupied spaces. Always wear goggles and closed-toe footwear when operating a pressure washer. Don’t spray near children, pets, electrical wires, or power lines. After use, allow the unit to cool down before storing.

Efficiency: To switch between jobs more efficiently, consider a unit that offers versatility in its function. For example, The POWERflow+ model from Briggs & Stratton has a high pressure mode -- ideal for cleaning tough grime -- and a high flow mode which delivers up to five gallons of water per minute to rinse away soap and debris on delicate surfaces like patio furniture, vehicles and second story windows.

Champagne Diamonds Make Fashion Transitions Pop This Fall

Are you still trying to find the perfect accessory to your summer-to-fall-transition fashion staples? The answer may be as simple as adding the color of one gemstone: champagne diamonds from Rio Tinto’s Argyle Mine in Australia. “What we are seeing from the latest 2014 fall fashion trends is a match fit perfectly for champagne diamonds,” says jewelry and style expert Michael O’Connor. “The light champagne to rich cognac natural shades are neutral, making them a perfect combination for all the neutrals that we’re seeing in fashion as well as all of the rich brighter gemstone colors, popular at holiday time.”

Since the diamond’s color is natural, it’s categorized as a “fancy colored” diamond. Yet, this word really doesn’t do it justice considering its rarity -- for every 10,000 white diamonds, there is only one natural-color diamond. Despite its rarity, however, the champagne diamond remains price accessible, making it attainable for nearly anyone.

So which colors will be coupling with Argyle champagne diamonds this season?

• Jewel tones: Metallic fabrics in shades ranging from cranberry and hot pink to deep emerald, teal, orchid, honey mustard, wine and crimson highlight this category.

• Bright tones: Orange, tangerine, cherry, fuchsia, caution yellow, lime and cobalt will surely “pop” this fall.

• Neutral tones: Fitting perfectly with the champagne diamond color spectrum, tones like loden, pea green, camel, cocoa, toffee, ivory, dove grey, grey, charcoal and ink were showcased in the 2014 spring shows as fall and winter must-haves.

• Soft tones: If pastel-style color is more your thing, consider tones like carnation, dusty rose, nude, peachy nude, ice blue, lilac and lavender.

No matter what colors you decide to sport during the transition to cooler seasons, be assured that Argyle champagne diamonds are a formidable fashion must-have with every style, including rocker chic, athletic wear, casual elegance and red carpet drama. “The good news for those looking to maximize their fashion purchases is that champagne diamonds go with

nearly any clothing category,” says O’Connor. “The warm, neutral tones of champagne diamonds easily lend themselves to summer, fall and winter wear, making the transition from lightweight summer styles to winter’s layered looks effortless.”

This fall, nearly anybody can pick out their favorite outfit -- whether it be silk, neoprene or denim -- and feel comfortable knowing that their champagne diamond accessories will always match.

How to Protect Yourself From Cyber Attacks

When business giants Target, Home Depot and Sony got hacked, and personal information was compromised, data security, once again, became a hot topic and household word.

Sure, you know you need to do more to shield your identity, but let’s face it, you can only do so much to protect yourself, and even that is reliant on other people or companies. Unfortunately, these same entities can clearly be careless.

When people aren’t careful, the Internet can become a playground for criminal activity. Whether you’re checking your email, banking information or doing some online shopping, you have already put yourself at risk of having your identity stolen.

Criminals have developed several ways to obtain personal data from innocent Internet users. According to the United States Department of Justice, cyber criminals can take over an individual’s identity to conduct a wide range of crimes. Criminals like to make fraudulent withdrawals from bank accounts because victims usually don’t become aware of the criminal activity until substantial and irreversible damage has already been done.

Enter Gabriel, a set of secure communication apps derived from a U.S. Department of Defense project and created by VirnetX, an Internet security software and technology company. Gabriel transmits information using automatic virtual private networks with military-grade encryption. Think Cryptograms. “Gabriel has been designed and built with personal privacy and security as a foundational principle,” says Dr. Robert Short, VirnetX Chief Technical Officer and Chief Scientist. “As a result, Gabriel provides uncompromising data security? users do not have to transmit data to, or store data with, any third party, including VirnetX. Users can therefore rest easy that their data is stored only on their devices.”

Other benefits from using Gabriel include:

* Making free voice or video calls or sending instant messages to other Gabriel members in your network.* Receiving spamless e-mail.* Allowing for person-to-person messages that disappear once the session has ended.* Sharing pictures or files with other trusted Gabriel users in your network directly from your personal device.

All of the above is done with other members of your network with the assurance that the transmissions are secured with end-to-end encryption.

Simply put, Gabriel makes your online communications invisible. Think of it this way: if the bad guys can’t see you, they can’t attack you. Gabriel is free to try. For more information, please visit www.gabrielsecure.com. (NewsUSA)

Your New Sheriff...Your Neighbor

Sheriff Mike Williams

FOR ALMOST A QUARTER-CENTURY, MIKE WILLIAMS HAS BEEN WORKING TO MAKE JACKSONVILLE’S CITIZENS SAFE.

Mike Williams has vast experience in every facet of crime-fighting.

Born and raised in Jacksonville, married, and raising a family of three sons here, Mike served in the Air National Guard, and began his successful career at the Jacksonville Sheriff ’s Office in 1991.

As a young patrol officer, he worked ”the beat” in downtown Jacksonville. Mike began early on to develop relationships with citizens and business leaders. He quickly earned a reputation as a police officer who cares about people and likes to help them solve problems.

Mike earned his way to the appointed position of Director of Investigations and Homeland Security, where he led the effort to bring the Jacksonville community and North Florida Region as much Homeland Security funding as possible. With more than $10 million in grants awarded locally, JSO deploys some of the most advanced technology available today in its battle against domestic terrorism, the drug trade, and organized crime. As a result, JSO is saving taxpayers millions of dollars.

Mike Williams retired from service in July 2014 as the appointed Director of Patrol and Enforcement, where his commitment to reducing and preventing crime involved managing a budget of more than $100 million and the 1000-plus sworn patrol officers who protect our great city.

Mike has accomplished a lot during more than 23 years with the JSO. Throughout his ascent to the department’s top tier of executive management, Mike Williams has never forgotten that the agency’s success depends on all officers listening to the community they serve. He is constantly in search of how to best address criminal activity that threatens our quality of life.

Mike Williams demonstrated his readiness to lead the JSO when he:

• led a nationally recognized SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) Team

• identified and implemented programs to better fight sexual predators and offenders

• developed narcotics and gun crime fighting units considered by state and federal agencies to be among the best law enforcement “partners” on complicated cases

• worked closely with government agencies to secure our Seaports and their enterprises

• and advanced JSO’s commitment to training for the bomb squad and dive team, resulting in both specialties now nationally recognized for their training expertise

On Tuesday, May 19, 2015 Mike Williams was elected Jacksonville’s fifth Sheriff since consolidation and took the oath of office on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 for a four year term.

Sheriff’s Message 2015

It’s been a very exciting few weeks, as I’ve taken the helm of the Jacksonville Sheriff ’s

Office. I’ve assembled my team and together we are working on a lot of projects and

programs, all aimed at making our community a safer place to live and solidify this agency

as a national model of excellence in 21st century policing. Reducing violent crime in

this community is one of this administration’s three strategic priorities. The others are

engaging the community and driving lean efficiencies.

We are focused on working to raise the public’s understanding of what we do and how

we can bring more “value” to every transaction a citizen has with our personnel. It’s

always nice for me to hear about a great experience a citizen had with an officer on the

street. One thing that tells me if we’re connecting with people is when I ask a citizen “do you know your police officers around

your neighborhood” and they say “yes” and name the officers. Then I know we’re developing the relationships that need to be

grown in order to have trust.

The best way to achieve that kind of connection is to make sure officers have the time they need to get out of their cars. This

is a manpower issue, but it’s also an allocation of resources challenge. Every month we look at our patrol and enforcement

assignments, to make sure we are where we need to be. It’s not just about the geography of where you have an officer working,

but in my experience it’s also about training our officers to make sure they are making the most of every minute spent on patrol,

sowing those seeds of walking in neighborhoods and talking with citizens about their concerns.

Since becoming Sheriff I’ve spent a good bit of time talking to members of the faith and civic community. We have a violence

problem in this community. The cycle of poverty has its deadly grip on many neighborhoods and along with the Mayor and the

Council, my agency is deeply committed to addressing the root causes of crime that lead to disregard for the law and ultimately

despair. You will hear more in the coming months about youth intervention and programs where we partner with pastors and

non-profits to help young people who need a break stay out of the justice system.

I’m passionate about hearing from our citizens. In the months ahead you will hear about a few citizen led committees that are

looking at the agency and offering insights and recommendations about innovations and programming that can make us more

efficient and productive. I will be hearing from thought leaders and business executives about how they think we can best achieve

greater transparency; what they think should be done to engage the community with us; what our training and recruitment

programming ought to include; and what are the resources we must have to be truly 21st century adaptable and what is the

value/cost proposition in modern day policing?

As I look around this country and see the difficulties between police and law

enforcement, I realized how lucky we are. For years we have listened to people

from every sector of this community. We’ve learned from one another and we’ve

learned from our mistakes. We have to work on it every day and we will continue

to do so. We are on the verge of greatness in this city, and the men and women

of the Jacksonville Sheriff ’s Office will be a part of that progress. Please let me

hear from you.

Northside JAX lifestyles is proud to announce two new features in the next issue.

Our first will focus on information from our own District 2 Councilman Mr. Al Ferraro. He has lived in JAX since 1977, and was just elected this past April. He has been a business owner since 1986, and raised his family in Arlington. He looks forward to sharing with you each month, just what is going on in District 2 concerning your local government. He wants to highlight the good things that happen on the Northside, such as the Kingfish Tournament, focus on the kids in his district, and rid our community of the meth labs harboring in abandon homes in San Mateo. He agrees with our magazine, that too much information about where we live is getting noticed but untold.

Our second feature is Sargent Greg Burton, he is the zone commander of your Zone 6, which comprises where you live. Greg will work with Northside JAX Lifestyle to help inform you of what is going on in your neighborhood through the eyes of JSO.During his 20 years with the Sheriff ’s office he has worked in various positions. He started his career in patrol (actually in zone 6). Greg later became a Sergeant working in the DUI Unit, Violent Crimes Task Force and served as a School Resource Supervisor. After rising to the rank of lieutenant he served as the Commander of the Violent Crimes Task Force and later as the Commander of the School Resource Unit. Greg was appointed to Sheriff Rutherford’s staff in 2007 as the Assistant Chief of Logistics and General Services and later as the Chief of the Support Services Division. Greg is once again proud to call Zone 6 his work home, where he was recently appointed the Commander of the Zone by newly elected Sheriff Mike Williams.

Tips for feeling fit at 30, 40, 50 and beyond

Do you ever wake up and think “Wow, I don’t feel as young as I used to?” It’s a sentiment shared by people of every age group. Fortunately, it doesn’t matter if you’re 20 or 60 - feeling fit and aging well can be a reality with the right mindset and proper exercise and nutrition. Tavis Piattoly is a sports dietitian, expert nutritionist and co-founder of My Sports Dietitian. He lends his expert insight into how people of three different age groups can feel fit, healthy and happy:

Young adults - up to age 30Starting a career, getting married, buying a home - these are just a few big life events people in this age category often experience. It also means less time to focus on fitness, and often an increase in unhealthy eating on the go. Physical activity: Piattoly suggests young adults do what they enjoy most, fitting it in on a regular basis. “Any form of physical exercise and exertion is beneficial for the cardiovascular system, but adults under 30 usually like sporting events,” he says. “This is the age where former athletes or very active post-graduates are still looking to play a sport for fun.”

Nutrition: “The metabolic rate of this age group is declining, so they can’t live on fast food for breakfast, lunch and dinner like they did in college,” Piattoly says. “It’s time to clean up the diet and make smarter choices such as reducing sugar intake and avoiding fast food as much as possible. Prevention should be the focus.”

Supplements: Piattoly says a multivitamin, Nordic Naturals fish oil and probiotic are a must.

Middle age - 30 to 50In this age bracket, regular checkups with a physician are important to test for common conditions like high blood pressure. The stress of having children and growing a career can take a toll. Eating out due to lack of time becomes common and can cause weight gain.

Physical activity: Piattoly suggests regular strength training three to five days per week to prevent the progression of muscle loss that begins around age 35.

“For cardiovascular-related exercises, it is important to do what you enjoy as you are more likely to stay motivated and consistent,” he says. “Yoga is recommended for those individuals who are looking to balance stress.”

Nutrition: “It’s important to eat smaller more frequent meals throughout the day, such as every three to four hours, and to make sure a source of lean protein is included at every meal and snack,” Piattoly says. “Protein is more thermogenic than fat and carbohydrates, so your body burns more calories when consuming protein.”

Supplements: In addition to all the supplements recommended for the young adult group, Piattoly suggests vitamin D and turmeric extract, a great natural anti-inflammatory agent, for 30 to 50-year-olds.

Boomers - 50 plusPeople of this age are concerned with their health and risk for disease due to family history or lifestyle factors from their youth. Additionally, progressive loss of muscle mass and weaker bones increases risk for injury.

Physical activity: Piattoly says regular strength training three to five days per week prevents the progression of muscle loss and maintains good bone strength to prevent falls.

“For cardiovascular-related exercises, it is important to do what you enjoy as you are more likely to stay motivated and consistent,” he says. “You can still participate in cardiovascular-related sports like tennis and basketball. For lower-impact sports that are easier on the joints, I like swimming and cycling.”

Nutrition: “Since the immune system is not as strong as it once was for this age group, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is key, such as five to 10 servings per day,” Piattoly says. “Protein is also a critical nutrient for the preservation of muscle mass. I usually recommend making a smoothie or shake at least once a day, which can include protein powder, fruit and some veggies.”

Supplements: “For heart and brain health, I’m a big fan of omega-3 fish oil, particularly from Nordic Naturals. They make triglyceride form fish oil, which is the optimal form for absorption,” says Piattoly. “Fish oil also supports joint mobility and healthy immunity.”

Additionally, a vitamin D supplement for bone health and, potentially, calcium for osteoporosis, and creatine to reduce the risk of age-related muscle decline are all worthwhile considerations. (BPT)

Hotel Tips and Tricks to Stay Healthy on the Road(StatePoint) Frequent travelers can be all too familiar with the challenges of staying both healthy and productive -- countless distractions, fast food joints on every corner and difficulty sleeping in unfamiliar places and beds can make staying on track a challenge. However, it doesn’t necessarily have to be such a daunting task, say experts.

“For frequent travelers and business travelers, being on the road is a lifestyle, so finding ways to be healthy and productive is essential,” says Marcey Rader, lifestyle trainer and Extended Stay Savve Traveler. “The key is to recognize your poor habits, find out what works for you, and then develop a routine around them.”

From her years on the road with a corporate position, Rader developed a series of hotel hacks that can assist frequent travelers and mobile professionals wishing to travel productively while also maintaining high health standards. Along with Extended Stay America, Rader is offering some hotel tips and tricks:

• Prioritize sleep: When you’re dealing with different beds, sounds and schedules, it’s almost guaranteed that your sleep routine will be disrupted. Sleep soundly with a fan, a recording or even an app that creates white noise to eliminate distractions and calm your mind and body.

• Give blue rays the boot: Ninety-five percent of people who don’t get a good night’s sleep say they use a phone or laptop within one hour of bed. Studies have shown that the blue rays emitted by phones and computer screens disrupt and suppress the body’s production of melatonin, a hormone crucial to sleep. Give your brain time to wind down before bed, you’ll sleep better and feel rejuvenated in the morning.

• Stand up and work: You may have heard that “sitting is the new smoking.” Constant sitting is linked to an overwhelming number of negative health effects and drastically decreased productivity. Luckily, there’s a simple solution -- standing. You can easily convert any space into a standing desk. Opt for a hotel with a kitchen and use the counters to get work done, or stack books and binders on a table for an elevated workspace.

• Don’t eat like you’re on vacation: The biggest mistake business traveler’s make is eating like they’re on vacation. Extended Stay recently conducted a survey of their travelers and found that the average weight gain while on the road is close to 3 pounds. With frequent travel for business, that starts to add up drastically. Staying at a hotel with a fully equipped kitchen can help maintain nutritious habits. Stock the fridge with vegetable trays to snack on throughout the day, and hard boiled eggs as a breakfast item.

• OHIO (Only Handle It Once): Do you go out to your mailbox, open the letters, put them back in the mailbox, go back in your house and repeat the process several times a day? Of course you don’t. Then stop doing that with your email inbox. Instantly increase productivity by deleting, archiving and sorting emails the first time you read them.

• Seek Smart Accommodations: An extended stay-style hotel offers amenities that can help travelers optimize productivity and prioritize health. To learn more travel tips, visit, www.ExtendedStayAmerica.com.

Stop making excuses. For happier, healthier, more successful traveling, recognize your unproductive habits and fix them.

LIFESTYLETen Anti-Crime Tips to Avoid Being a Victim

Nobody can predict or stop senseless criminal violence. Fortunately, most crimes are plotted out by criminals, and if you learn how they think, you can take successful defensive action and avoid becoming their victim. To find out how to defend themselves and make themselves and their loved ones less-tempting victims of the "bad guys," many Americans are turning to clear, concise, plain-spoken training manuals available by mail.

“An alarm alerts you during a crime, the police help you after a crime, but this information helps you before the crime,” says Bimston. The manual is packed with step-by-step instructions to keep bad guys from noticing and bothering you - as well as what to do if they get close enough to bother you. Law enforcement agencies and private security consultants from Florida to Alaska are currently using the manual. Law enforcement agencies and private security consultants from Florida to Alaska are currently using the manual.

Beating the Bad GuysHere are 10 tips from Bimston’s book for a new breed of anti-victims:

1. You are followed by a car on your way home. You turn into your street and so does the other car. Do not pull into your drive or garage. Drive to the nearest police station, or call the police on your car phone. Let them tell you what to do.

2. Don’t use decals on windows and doors that say “Alarm” or “Attack Dogs” if they aren’t true. They might deter a child but not a pro.

3. Radios and TVs playing on timers inside your house are good night and day.

4. Neighbors are an excellent line of defense. You look out for them, they’ll look out for you.

5. Organize a neighborhood watch.

6. Every home ought to have a “safe room.” Here’s what’s required: a cellular phone and 2) a strong, solid door with a dead bolt. If an intruder gets into your home, he or she may get a few items, but not you.

7. Alarms that signal break-ins are seldom necessary or effective, and neighbors rarely pay attention to them. Central systems that alert police or guards have poor response times. Less expensive security systems work better.

8. Carry your wallet in front pants pocket, not back pocket or inside jacket pocket.

9. Don’t carry more cash than you can afford to lose.

10. Carry as few credit cards as possible.

Bimston’s manual offers chapters on avoiding scams, gun safety and use of other weapons, unarmed safety, and safe traveling. Bimston’s book is available by writing a check to Mentor Crime Control Center, 6606 S. Grande Drive, Boca Raton, FL 33433. Or call 703-912-1761 for 24-hour voice mail. (NewsUSA)

Big brother is watching: It’s good for you and bad for the bad guys

It’s Monday morning and you awake to the sound of your alarm blaring. If you’re like a hundred million other Americans, it means it’s time to get ready for work. Some people get up, get dressed, then wrestle the kids into their clothes and the car to drop them off at school before heading into work, while others have the luxury of enjoying breakfast and a cup of coffee before getting in the car for the commute to the office. Or maybe you live in a city and can walk out the door and stop at the corner coffee shop to grab a cup of java and a scone before catching a taxi, the bus or the subway.

Regardless of your own Monday morning routine, in the words of the iconic all-female ‘80s band The Bangles, “It’s just another manic Monday.” And, depending on your route to work and the stops you make, you might be surprised to learn you’ve been captured on camera at least a dozen times before you even arrive.

“Consider this: once you leave your home, you’re caught by multiple traffic cameras at various intersections and freeway monitors filming traffic lanes,” says Dan Bales, national director of special investigations at Mercury Insurance. “Additionally, many public parking lots are equipped with security cameras, as are gas stations, grocery stores, coffee shops, convenience stores, banks and ATM machines. These are just a handful of places where you can be photographed as you make your way through an average day, let alone simply on your way to work.” It may be unsettling to think about how cameras may infringe on your privacy, but surveillance camera footage can play a significant role in helping law enforcement solve crimes and protect you. Additionally, it helps special investigators like Bales detect and prevent insurance fraud, which saves Americans millions of dollars and helps keep insurance rates low.

“One in five U.S. adults (about 45 million people) say it’s acceptable to defraud insurance companies under certain circumstances,” says Bales. “Mercury’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is constantly on the lookout for fraudulent claims and, without giving away trade secrets, the technology and our tactics for catching fraudsters is always evolving. Chances are, if you’re trying to defraud the system, you will get caught and the penalties will be severe.” Mercury’s SIU was founded in 1978 to help combat insurance fraud. Since its inception, investigators have exposed thousands of fraudulent automotive, homeowner and medical claims, saving policyholders hundreds of millions of dollars.

“We completed 1,441 investigations in California alone in 2014, exposing more than $22 million in attempted fraud,” says Bales. “Surveillance cameras were instrumental in debunking many of those claims.

“Certain types of fraud are decreasing. Auto theft, for instance, is becoming more difficult to fake due to the sophistication of on-board anti-theft systems. However, staged accidents still occur and we’re seeing an increase in fraud related to personal injury and doctored medical records. Mercury’s SIU works with local law enforcement to train officers how to recognize staged accidents, as well as feigned or enhanced damages, while at the scene. Many times, this training allows them to arrest fraudsters on the spot.”

Bales also notes that even the savviest criminal can’t be certain whose Facebook page or Instagram feed they might end up on in the background of someone else’s photo, so fake injuries can be uncovered.

The public can do its part to help lower insurance costs by reporting suspicious activity to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. And, when involved in any incident, questionable or not, take photos or video of the participants and damages that occur. (BPT)
