Raising a Child with Special Needs… September 28, 2016 – location: Kindering Bothell Rosanne Carter, Infant Mental Health Therapist and

Louis Mendoza, Fathers Network Director will co-facilitate this

class with plenty of time for questions, answers and

discussion. Developing understanding of the many challenges moms and dads experience when having a child with special needs, takes time. Many parents have discovered learning from others that have similar experiences is one valuable way of making sense of this unique path. Join with other parents and facilitators for robust dialogue and exercises focused on key issues all parents experience at some time when having a child with special needs. A few myths will also be addressed and the value of resilience discussed. Learn how to build an effective team and create positive relationships to advocate for your child with special needs. Whether it is within the education system, insurance companies or navigating the state support services, you will be the strongest voice for your child. Learn how and why to use positive advocacy to make a difference for your child.

KINDERING BELLEVUE PARKING

Please enjoy our “RESERVED Kindering Only” parking spots in the front and side of our building. When you arrive at Kindering Bellevue please do not use the fire station’s entrance and driveway. Our entrance is the driveway just east of that. Please do not park in the “Fire Only” spaces that face the fire station. Never leave children unattended in a car.

ILLNESS EXCLUSION & INFECTIOUS DISEASE POLICY Kindering is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all children, staff and other volunteers of the agency. We view parents as our partners in promoting the safety and health of others by preventing the spread of communicable disease. Please read our Illness Exclusion policy in entirety, found in your Kindering parent handbook. Be sure to notify staff immediately if your child contracts a known infectious disease, in particular, those that can be harmful to pregnant women or medically vulnerable children or adults.

IMMUNIZATIONS Kindering requires an immunization record on file for all children. Please provide Kindering with a completed Certificate of Immunization Status Form. We encourage children enrolled at Kindering to meet these requirements. Source: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/ For exemption information, go to page 9 of the Kindering Parent Handbook.

IMPORTANT PARENT REMINDERS

NO NUTS! Due to individual allergies to nuts and concerns for the health of our children, we ask families and staff not to bring any nut products into our building. This includes peanut butter, trail mix, candy bars and any other foods containing any type of nut. Thanks!

All children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Please review the Early Intervention Parent Handbook for updated

policies and other information.

We expect that all parents and guests are respectful and appropriate. Please review appropriate behavior in the Parent Handbook.

We ask that you be extra careful with beverages and foods in the building. Cleaning supplies are available if spills occurs. We appreciate

your help in keeping our facility clean.

Classrooms, therapy rooms and the Motor room/indoor play area are for classroom and therapy use only. Families must be accompanied by a therapist.

Please check the Lost & Found, located in the classroom observation room, regularly. Unclaimed items will be donated.

Please be sure to flush toilet paper ONLY. Baby wipes and changing

table paper will clog the toilets. Please bag and dispose of diapers in

the proper receptacles, not in the trash cans. Thanks for your support!

RESOURCES

We have family waiting rooms at both locations that are a great place for kids to play and parents to visit.

The Parent Library within the family waiting room in Bellevue offers

resources and books just waiting to be checked out!

Kindering’s sensory garden and Crossroads Park are right outside

Kindering Bellevue’s front door with easy trail access to the play

equipment. Kindering Bothell has great walking trails.

A check-in phone is located at the front desk with a list of Kindering staff and their extensions. If the receptionist is unavailable please dial the

extension number of the person you are trying to reach.

Look for Kindering parent events such as Mothers’ Circle, Sibshops, and Fathers Network as well as Development special events on the bulletin board across from the indoor play area or on our lobby TV monitors.

SEPTEMBER FAMILY NEWSLETTER

OPEN ENROLLMENT:

STEPPING STONES TODDLER

PRESCHOOL We are currently enrolling in our Stepping Stones Toddler Preschool program at our Bothell and Bellevue campus. We are enrolling children who are currently receiving early intervention services as well as community preschoolers! Please refer friends or enroll siblings, ages 22-33 months. For more information, please contact your Family Resources Coordinator, your current providers or the Early Learning Coordinator Lauri Stoll @ 425.747.4004 ext. 4953 or email [email protected].

SIBSHOPS

Sibshops are action-packed workshops in which participants meet other siblings of children with a variety of special needs, and are encouraged to share about the challenges and joys of having a brother or sister with a disability while having fun. They are a celebration of the special relationship and many contributions that siblings of children with special needs make, and are based on the Children’s Hospital program model designed by Don Meyer (www.siblingsupport.org). Each Sibshop mixes information and discussion activities with new games, active play, and art projects! Dinner and dessert are also provided. To learn more about Sibshops at Kindering, visit www.Kindering.org/sibshops.

MOTHERS’ CIRCLE NEWS

Mothers’ Circle is an integral part of Kindering’s programs to support parents during their time at Kindering and beyond. We’ve recently celebrated our 20th year of serving this incredible community. We will be taking a well-deserved pause in the program in advance of an exciting re-launch, scheduled to happen in fall 2016. After 20 years, even the Mother’s Circle needs a break!

For more information about Mothers’ Circle and to be part of the group making it the best it can be, please contact Rosanne Carter at 425.984.2623 or email [email protected].

BABY STEPS

Have you wished you could meet other parents of infants/toddlers with special needs? Have you wondered where you could take your baby to experience socialization, play, and also have adult contact? Would you like new play ideas and songs?

If you answered yes to any of the questions, then Baby Steps may be for you!

Baby Steps is a parent/infant class that focuses on connection, play, support, and building relationships. In this class, the joys and challenges of raising a child with special needs will be shared, celebrated, and supported. Baby Steps is the first of many beginnings.

If interested, contact your family resource coordinator for more information.

Hi! My name is Lucie Shannon and I am so excited to start as an administrative assistant here at Kindering. I moved here a few years ago from Florida after I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. I

often volunteer to organizations that empower local communities and helping families get back on their feet. I also enjoy spending time with my family, hiking, and painting. Sincerely, Lucie

WELCOME NEW STAFF

Hi, my name is Colleen Thornburg and I am the new Administrative Assistant for Kindering. I was ready for a change, seeking out a better work/life balance; when I became aware of an opening at Kindering I jumped at the chance. I feel lucky to be part of such an upbeat and dedicated group of

people. My background is that of a Special Education Teacher, having taught in a wide variety of settings on and off for 17 years. I have had the privilege to work and teach Early Childhood Ed through Secondary Level At-Risk students with a wide variety of needs. I am looking very forward to my role as Administrative Assistant as I really enjoy being in support of people who are dedicating their work life to helping children and their families! In my free time I enjoy attending live local music shows, spending time with family and friends, reading, and spending time with animals.
