    ST. PAULS EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH

    15th Sunday of Pentecost September 2nd & 5th, 2010

    Theme of the Day

Work Together and Live Togetherin Love

    Hymns: 492 499 486 & 748 327

Order of Service: Service of Word & Sacrament (p. 26-37)

First Reading: Genesis 13:5-13Abram yields his rights to his nephew, Lot. Though Abram was the elder

and though God had promised the land to Abram and not to LotAbramgave his nephew first pick. Lot chooses the mostdesirable land. We see in Abrams humility and generosity the spiritof Pauls letter to Philemon.

Second Reading: Luke 6:27-36Jesus speaks about relationships in these words from the Sermon on the

Mount. Instead of holding a grudge against our enemies, we are to lovethem and not insist our own rights. We are to act humbly and selflessly forthe benefit of others. This is the spirit we are encouraged to have also inPauls letter to Philemon.

Genesis 13:5-135 Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.

6 But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their posses-sions were so great that they were not able to stay together. 7 And quarreling arosebetween Abram's herdsmen and the herdsmen of Lot. The Canaanites and Periz-zites were also living in the land at that time.8 So Abram said to Lot, "Let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or be-tween your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers. 9 Is not the whole land beforeyou? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if you go to the right,I'll go to the left."10 Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, likethe garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. (This was before theLORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plainof the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company:12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain andpitched his tents near Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sin-ning greatly against the LORD.

Luke 6:27-3627 "But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone strikesyou on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do notstop him from taking your tunic. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyonetakes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would havethem do to you.32 "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even `sinners' lovethose who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what creditis that to you? Even `sinners' do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you ex-pect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even `sinners' lend to `sinners,' expect-ing to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them

without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you willbe sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Philemon1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker, 2 to Apphia our sister, toArchippus our fellow soldier and to the church that meets in your home:3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.4 I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, 5 because I hear

about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints. 6 I pray that youmay be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding ofevery good thing we have in Christ. 7 Your love has given me great joy and encour-agement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.

8 Therefore, although in Christ I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to

do, 9 yet I appeal to you on the basis of love. I then, as Paul -- an old man and nowalso a prisoner of Christ Jesus -- 10 I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who be-came my son while I was in chains. 11 Formerly he was useless to you, but now hehas become useful both to you and to me.

12 I am sending him -- who is my very heart -- back to you. 13 I would have liked tokeep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chainsfor the gospel. 14 But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that anyfavor you do will be spontaneous and not forced. 15 Perhaps the reason he wasseparated from you for a little while was that you might have him back for good -- 16no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear tome but even dearer to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.

    17

So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me.18

If hehas done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me. 19 I, Paul, am writingthis with my own hand. I will pay it back -- not to mention that you owe me your veryself. 20 I do wish, brother, that I may have some benefit from you in the Lord; refreshmy heart in Christ. 21 Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that youwill do even more than I ask.

22 And one thing more: Prepare a guest room for me, because I hope to be restoredto you in answer to your prayers. 23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. 24 And so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellowworkers. 25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

    True Christian Friendship

    His- torical Setting

Onesimus was a runaway slave who came into contact with Paul during the Apos-tles first imprisonment in Rome in 61-63 A.D.. Under Pauls influence Onesimus became a

Christian (v10). Onesimus then freely served his new friend and father in Christ who was inchains for the gospel (v13). Imagine how useful Onesimus was during Pauls imprison-ment! The name, Onesimus, means useful (v11).

As it turned out, the master of Onesimus was a man named Philemon, a conse-crated layman at the church in Colossae (present-day Turkey) who was a personal friend ofthe Apostle Paul. In fact, Paul had converted Philemon to Christianity (v19) just as he did hisslave, Onesimus. The church in Colossae met in the home of Philemon (v2)and it appearsthat Philemon provided a room for the Apostle Paul to stay in (v22).

Paul knew it would not be right to keep Onesimus. So he sends him back to hismaster in Colossae. Onesimus and a man named Tychicus deliver the letter to the Co-lossians and the letter to Philemon. In this letter to Philemon, Paul pleads for the kind treat-ment of Onesimus whom he refers to as my son (v10). This is the last of the four prisonepistles Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and Philemon all written during Pauls firstimprisonment.

Great Things Are Said of Philemon

The letter of Philemon is a perfect gemfor its Courtesy, Tact, Delicacy and Generosity, cli-maxing with its tender appeal to Philemon to receive Onesimus as you would receiveme (v17) Halleys Bible Handbook

Martin Luthers Beautiful Words on Philemonas quoted in the Concordia Self-Study Bible

This epistle give us a masterful and tender illustration of Christian love. . . Paul acts exactlyas if he were himself Onesimus, who had done wrong. . . What Christ has done for us with

God the Father, that St. Paul does also for Onesimus with Philemon. For Christ emptiedhimself of his rights (Philippians 2:7) and overcame the Father with love and humility, so that theFather had to put away his wrath and rights, and receive us into favor for the sake of Christ, who so earnestly advocates our cause and so heartily takes our part. For we are all his One-simuses if we believe

We See Christ in This Litt le Letteras explained in the Concordia Self-Study Commentary

    1) Pauls love for Onesimus, who is guilty of a great offense (v 11,15,18) motivates him tointercede on behalf of the runaway slave (v10-17). Christ intercedes for us though we too

are slaves to sin.2) Paul sets aside his rights (v8) and becomes Onesimus substitute by assuming his debt

(v18,19). Paul promises to pay back whatever Onesimus may have stolen from him.It was not unusual for slaves to line their pockets with their masters possessionsin order to fund their escape.

    3) By Philemons gracious act Onesimus is forgiven and placed in a new relationship withhis lord (v15,16).

    4) We, like Onesimus, are guilty of sin.

    5) Jesus ministry on earth and mediation before his Father parallel Pauls advocacybefore Philemon.

    6) We, like Onesimus, are condemned by law, but saved by Gods grace.

Other Scriptural Lessons from Philemonfrom the Thompson Chain Reference Bible

    1) The importance of concern for the unfortunate2) The duty of obedience to the law by converts: Onesimus must return to his master.3) Christian brotherhood obliterates all social and class distinctions. Onesimus was to be

    treated as a dear brother (v 16).

The Art of Persuasion in Philemon

The Concordia Self-Study Bible explains Pauls appeal to Philemon is organized in a wayprescribed by ancient Greek and Roman teachers: to build rapport (v 4-10), to persuade themind (v11-19) and to move the emotions (v20,21). The name Onesimus is not mentioned until

the rapport has been built (v10), and the appeal itself is stated only near the end to persuadethe mind (v17). Finally the greatest persuasion is, of course, Gods love in Christ which hasrescued each of us from slavery to sin and motivates us to love all people in spite of their sin.

Notice the Play on WordsIn verse 11 Paul says, Formerly he (Onesimus, the runaway slave, whose name means

useful) was uselessto you, but now he has become usefulboth to you and to me.

Special thanks to all who supported Pastor Scharrer and

the Escape Teen Center in the past marathons. When thebody is saying, Stop! This isnt any fun any more, thechallenge goals of his brothers and sisters in Christ meanall the more. They encourage the runner NOT to give up inthis 26.2 mile race.

Last years gifts for the Escape totaled $1940. Theysurpassed the previous years gifts by about $600.Awesome! Think we can surpass the $1940 this year byagain as much? Much more help is needed.

Many have followed one friends idea who said, $1 per mile, and $2 per mile if youfinish. See what we mean by a challenge goal? But any size gift is greatly ap-

preciated. Your prayers are vitally needed. They are of utmost importance. Couldwe already begin to pray for a cool day, September 19, the day of the race? Thanks
