What does each represent and What does each represent and why?why?
• Hershey kiss:• Igneous melts in your mouth• Starburst: • METAMORPHIC• heat and pressure only changes it, not melts it• Cracker, fluff, sprinkles, gummies:• Sedimentary rock full of layers of sediments!

The Layers of the EarthThe Layers of the Earth
• I want you to learn:
1.Position
2.Composition
3.Density
![Page 9: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Inner CoreInner Core
• Solid
• Most dense
• Iron and nickel
• (Location draw picture from board)
![Page 10: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
The “why’s”The “why’s”
• Why is it solid?
• The intense pressure does not allow molecules to spread apart
• Why is it in the middle of the earth?
• It is so packed full of material, it sinks to the middle
![Page 11: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Outer CoreOuter Core
• Liquid
• Less dense than inner core
• Iron and nickel
![Page 12: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The “Why’s”The “Why’s”
• Why is the outer core liquid?
• It’s intensely hot!!!, not enough pressure to be solid
• Closer to surface than inner core, so it’s less dense
![Page 13: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
MantleMantle
• Thickest layer
• Plasticlike, not quite liquid, not quite solid
• Almost “gooey”
• Less dense than inner and outer core
![Page 14: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
CrustCrust
• Outer skin of earth
• Includes dry land and ocean floor
• Continental crust: crust not covered with ocean water
• Oceanic Crust: crust covered with ocean water
• Least dense of all layers! So it seems to float….
![Page 15: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Lithosphere vs. AsthenosphereLithosphere vs. Asthenosphere
• Lithosphere:
• Top sub layer
• Includes both continental and oceanic crust
• Top portion of mantle and the crust equals the lithosphere
![Page 16: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
AsthenosphereAsthenosphere
• Sub layer
most ooey-gooey portion of mantle
![Page 17: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
10/3 Today we will…10/3 Today we will…
• Review notes
• Take short open note quiz on basic layers of earth
• Review new (8th grade terms) vocab to describe the layers of earth
• WORKSHEET ON CONVECTION
![Page 18: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Quiz #8Quiz #8
• 1. Which of the four layers is the thickest?• 2. Which of the four layers is at the center
of the earth?• 3. Which of the four layers is the most
dense?• 4. Which of the four layers is the least
dense?• 5. What phase of matter is the inner core
in?
![Page 19: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Oceanic vs. Continental crustOceanic vs. Continental crust
• Crust covers the entire surface of earth
• Some of the crust is under large bodies of water, some is not.
• Can you determine which is which?
![Page 20: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Oceanic Oceanic
• Thinner than continental crust
• Very dense
• Under ocean water
![Page 21: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Continental crustContinental crust
• Thicker than oceanic layer
• Land
• Not as dense as oceanic….
• Why?
![Page 22: September 29, 2008](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062217/568147ac550346895db4e8c0/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)

• Hot air ___________
• As it rises, it ___________
• Then that cool air __________

The Joke for 7The Joke for 7thth period period
• Two Geologists are walking across a granite outcrop one day. The first says to the second
• - "Hey, this terrain is unmetamorphosed". Replies the second one, -
• "No Schist".• GET IT, SCHIST IS METAMORPHIC ROCK
AND GRANITE IS IGNEOUS.
