But the irony is we don’t act on it. While our conscience prods us to charity and compassion, we get stalled by the little necessities of life. The urgency of picking up kids from soccer or groceries from the store outweighs the importance of prayer or worship. We don’t prioritize God’s business until after “our” business is complete. And yet our words remain full of concern and piety. We speak fluently of our love for God and others, but our inaction drowns out those words. In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void. Then God said, “Let there be light”. God separated the light from the darkness. And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” God called the dome Sky. And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And God said, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.”

And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth God said, “See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.” God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation.

Fr. Kevin’s Cluttered Desk Matthew 21:28-31 "What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’ 'I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. ’Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go. Which of the two did what his father wanted?" But what about the son who said, “yes I will go” and went? I think sometimes we need to celebrate that we actually got it right. We did what we were asked to do and did it without complaining. Now more often than not we are like one or the other of the sons but sometimes we do get it right. It’s kind of like the examination of conscience at the end of the day. We look at the things we did wrong, the things that we could have done better, but we also should look at and celebrate when we got it right, and give praise and thanks to God for helping us get it right. Yes, we are sinners in need of God’s mercy and protection, but we are also God’s sons and daughters who have been graced with the Holy Spirit and entrusted with the mission of building up the church. We have been entrusted with the duty of evangelization to spread the Good News. This is our work in the vineyard, but to do this we must be properly prepared. Are we going to confession regularly? (That would be more than once or twice a year.) Are we receiving the Eucharist weekly? Are we spending time before the Blessed Sacrament? Do we pray our morning and evening prayers? Are we reading the Bible? And the list goes on. At World Youth Day in Sydney in 2008 we listened to a husband and wife who shared with us their journey of faith. They said the only thing that they found harder and that required more work than being a good Christian was being a good spouse and parent. Being a parent and spouse demanded that you know how to stay on the same page when using the word “no” with your children. They talked about loving each other and raising their children but in the end they took us back to the 2008 WYD theme of Receiving the Power from the Holy Spirit.

If I truly believe that at my Confirmation I did receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit, then at the end of each day my examination of conscience should include some celebration of getting it right, for the Holy Spirit will lead me and guide me in all things.

Peace Fr. Kevin
