Stewardship

Reflecting on God’s Word Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Focus on God’s agenda, not your own. This message could be the link between the reading from the book of Numbers and the Gospel. When Joshua gets upset at the two men who are suddenly prophesying and wants Moses to stop them, Moses asks, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people . . . were prophets!” (Numbers 11:29). And Jesus responds to his disciple John, also upset that someone outside their group was cas ng out demons in Jesus’ name, that “whoever is not against us is for us” (Mark 9:40).

Both Jesus and Moses recognized that God’s spirit blows where it will. It some mes ends up in the strangest places, working through very unexpected people. At the same me, no one can presume that the Spirit will always be working through a par cular group or the proper channels. We must be careful of trying to box in or corral the spirit of God.

Being on the inside is no guarantee. Thus, we get Jesus’ hard words about cu ng off a hand or a leg or plucking out an eye rather than le ng it cause us to sin and be cast into hell. Most say this is hyperbole, Middle Eastern exaggera on. I think Jesus is calling his disciples to look honestly at their lives and face whatever it is that leads them away from God. “Deal with it,” he says. We must always watch what we hold, the path we choose to walk, and the vision that guides us.

Those on the inside can lose sight of, lose

touch with, go off the path that takes us to the kingdom. And they can take others with them. What ma ers is that God’s work be done. God will see to it; don’t get in the way.

What was Happening in the Fourth Century? With Galerius’ Edict of Tolera on in 311 ending ac ve persecu on of Chris ans, and Constan ne’s Edict of Milan in 313 allowing religious freedom, the church became publically visible. Instead of mee ng in homes, or secret loca ons, actual church buildings could be constructed or purchased. The first in Rome was the Lateran Palace, owned by Constan ne and donated by him to the Bishop of Rome. Although rebuilt since the fourth century, the basilica of St. John Lateran remains the official cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope, not St. Peter’s Basilica.

The architectural style of these churches was based on the basilicas used by the Roman Empire as courts or other official

Faith Formation & Enrichment

government buildings. Typically they had a long rectangular mee ng hall called a nave, with a rounded apse at one end, where the magistrate would preside over the business at hand. The apse would usually be topped with a dome which contained an oculus (a round window) open to the sky in the center. This model was used for churches as it was the familiar place for gatherings of people. Soon, transepts, were added to each side of the nave giving the structure the shape of a cross. The altar was placed in the apse, which faced toward the east.

A er the fall of Rome in the fi h century, many of its buildings were converted into churches. One of the oldest of these was the Roman Pantheon, a temple honoring all the Roman gods, which was constructed in 126 AD by Emperor Hadrian on a loca on of an older building which had been built by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Caesar Augustus (27 BC to 14 AD). In the seventh century, the Pantheon became the Church of St. Mary of the Martyrs. The original 126 AD granite structure is s ll standing and in use. Its dome poured and molded concrete, is the largest unreinforced concrete dome on any building in the world. It is 142 feet in diameter, and 142 feet from base to oculus. It is a wonder of ancient architecture.

Christian houses of worship began to be developed throughout the Roman Empire, which stretched from Britain to North Africa, and from the Atlantic Coast of Europe to the Western boundary of Persia. It was a huge expanse of land containing diverse peoples and cultures, and Constantine’s primary concern was keeping the Empire unified under one ruler—him. With this in mind, he found Rome to be an inappropriate capital from which to govern the Empire. Instead in 323 he moved the imperial troops and government officials to a city nearer the middle of the Empire on the western coast of Asia Minor called Byzantium. It was an ancient city, first founded in 660 BC. It was an ideal location, as it was central to the Empire, it was located on a major shipping route between the Mediterranean and Black Seas, it was on the trade route between the orient and western Europe, the city was located on the boundary where Europe and Asia meet, and, possibly not least, it had a better climate and less crime than Rome.

Constan ne began a building campaign in Byzan um that con nued for six years, greatly expanding the city. Being a man of great humility, he renamed the city a er himself—Constan nople (Constan ne’s City). The construc on included an imperial palace, barracks for troops, government facili es and churches, including one called the “Great Church” (Magna Ecclesia). This edifice, which had a wooden roof, burned completely in 404 during the riots following the exile of Patriarch John Chrysostom by Emperor Arcadius, was rebuilt in 415, burned again, and rebuilt on a massive scale in marble and stone by Emperor Jus nian I in 532 AD. The third structure was consecrated with the name Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom). It was the principal church of the Patriarch of Constan nople. Although a par al collapse of the dome required repair, the building remains today as a museum, a reminder of its former glory.

And, so, the story of the Church con nues . . .

Estar adentro no ofrece garan as.
