25th Sunday Ordinary Time ~ Jesus teaches the greatest paradox in our faith. “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” This is not the teaching the world gives to us. It doesn’t make sense to most. Even people of faith have trouble grasping this truth. Jesus teaches that in serving, relinquishing power, not holding onto control, even accepting/embracing suffering and rejection, one can

discover the kingdom of God, spiritual power, greatness of life and “be first”. Many would say it is impossible to prove this paradox. It is precisely why it is a paradox – an apparent contradiction. One usually discovers its truth only as one lives it. Christians and non-Christians alike have discovered and attempted to share this truth over the ages. Mahatma Ghandi: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Shirley Chisolm: “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” Bernard Meltzer: “Blessed are those who give without remembering. And blessed are those who take

without forgetting.” Albert Schweitzer: “The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and

found how to serve.” From the earliest of years children argue and fight over who will be first in line. Some grow up and as adults still have never lost the lust for being first and most important. When one lets go of this need, and most finally learn it in service to others, then one discovers the joy and peace that Jesus calls the “kingdom of God”. * At St. Bernard’s we have innumerable opportunities to serve. Some include: Eucharistic ministry to the sick; all of the liturgical ministries; opportunities to give to and help the poor; donate food, donate money; donate time. Jesus didn’t just speak it – he ‘lived and died’ it. My prayer is that ALL will discover this paradox by explicitly living it before this year expires. “Find ourselves” – that is the hope of Jesus for each of us!

PARISH FINANCES We just finished putting in new lighting and re-wiring another of our meeting rooms in the Pastoral Center. Now both St. Joseph and St. Jude rooms are updated and will meet our needs better as we continue to

expand our use of the Center. In the near future we will be moving ALL of our offices and meeting rooms to the Center so that everything related to parish business and concerns will be under one roof. We hope that this will allow us to serve you better.

PARISH MISSION

Fr. Dominic DeMaio of the Dominican Religious Community will be giving a

Mission from Saturday, October 6th through Thursday, October 11th. He will be preaching at all of the Masses and be giving talks during the week in both English and Spanish. Previously Fr. Dominic was assigned to St. Dominic Parish and on occasion celebrated Masses here and participated in Parish Penance Services. He will be visiting the school and available to the parish groups and is very excited to share in the life of our parish community. Watch this space to find out more information regarding our parish mission.

FR. PERRY VACATION DAYS From Wednesday, October 3 thru Thursday, October 11, Fr. Perry will be on vacation. The Sunday Masses will be covered by neighboring priests and hopefully most weekday Masses. Should a priest fail to come due to illness or some unforeseen emergency, a communion service will be provided. This, of course, will fulfill a person’s Sunday obligation both because they have made the effort to attend Liturgy and also because in that instance this was the only service available. This, of course, also highlights the need for ongoing prayers for more priestly vocations, support for and invitation to men to consider a possible vocation to priesthood.

Alexa received her First Communion at St. Bernard’s this past year and tragically died in a fire at her home in Cypress Park a week ago. If you wish to reach out and help her family, you can do so

Vigésimo Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario ~ Jesús nos enseña la mayor paradoja de nuestra fe. "Si alguno

quiere ser el primero, que sea el último de todos y el servidor de todos". Esta no es la enseñanza que el mundo nos ofrece. Esto, para la mayoría no tiene sentido. Incluso las personas de fe tienen problemas para comprender esta verdad. Jesús enseña que en el servicio, en la entrega de poderes, en el no aferrarse al control, incluso aceptando o

abrazando el sufrimiento y el rechazo, uno puede descubrir el Reino de Dios, el poder espiritual, la grandeza de la vida y "ser el primero". Muchos dirían que es imposible probar esta paradoja. Es precisamente por eso que es una paradoja - una aparente contradicción. Uno generalmente descubre su verdad de acuerdo a como la vive. Cristianos y no Cristianos por igual han descubierto e intentado compartir esta verdad a través del tiempo. Mahatma Gandhi: "La mejor manera para encontrarse a si mismo es perderse uno mismo en el servicio de

los demás." Shirley Chisolm: "El servicio a los demás es la renta que uno paga por su habitación aquí en la tierra". Bernard Meltzer: "Bienaventurados los que dan sin recordar. Y bienaventurados son los que toman sin olvidar". Albert Schweitzer: "Los únicos entre ustedes

que serán realmente felices son aquellos que han buscado y encontrado cómo servir". Desde los primeros años los niños discuten y se pelean por el primer lugar en la fila. Algunos adultos todavía no han perdido la ambición de ser el primero ni el más importante. Cuando uno deja de lado esta necesidad, la mayoría finalmente aprende que es en el servicio a los demás que descubrimos la alegría y la paz que Jesús llama el "Reino de Dios". En San Bernardo tenemos innumerables oportunidades para servir. Algunas incluyen: el Ministerio Eucarístico a los Enfermos; todos los Ministerios Litúrgicos; ayudar a los pobres; donar alimentos, donar dinero; donar tiempo. Jesús no solo lo expresó con palabras sino que lo ‘vivió. Pido a Dios que TODOS descubramos esta paradoja viviéndola explícitamente antes de que termine este año. Que nos "Encontremos a nosotros mismos" — eso es lo que Jesús espera para cada uno de nosotros!

El Padre Dominic DeMaio de la Comunidad Religiosa Dominicana dará

Fue asignado a la Parroquia de Santo Domingo y en ocasiones ha celebrado Misa aquí y ha participado en los Servicios Penitenciales Parroquiales. DÍAS DE VACACIONES DEL PADRE PERRY

Del Miércoles 3 de Octubre al Jueves 11 de Octubre, el Padre Perry estará de vacaciones. Las Misas Dominicales estarán cubiertas por sacerdotes vecinos y esperemos que también la mayoría de las Misas diarias. Si un sacerdote no llega debido a una enfermedad o una emergencia imprevista, se proporcionará un Servicio de Comunión. Esto, cumplirá con su obligación del domingo, tanto porque han hecho el esfuerzo de asistir a la Liturgia como porque en ese caso, este era el único servicio disponible. Esto, por supuesto, también resalta la necesidad de oraciones por más vocaciones sacerdotales, apoyo e invitación a los hombres a considerar una posible vocación al sacerdocio.
