Salt for the Week

If you’ve ever had heart issues

or even a good biology class, you

know that the heart is divided

into chambers, each with their

own functions. When one of them

has problems, the entire heart is affected.

Today’s gospel account reflects on the

problem of divided hearts—serving “God

and mammom.” Biologically divided hearts

are a good thing—spiritually, not so much!

Jesus reminds us that we cannot serve two

masters. He often uses heart imagery to

teach core values to the disciples. “Where

your heart is, there your treasure lies,” was

a recent text along the same lines.

How’s your heart health?

Are you serving two (or more) masters?

Pondering for the week- Special Masses—September 29 is the date for St. Mary Parish’s special “Bye” Weekend Mass, held in conjunction with their Fun Day. Please note that this Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sunday rather than the usual 6:00 p.m. Saturday Mass. Father John will be the celebrant. Baptismal Class—There is one more baptismal class scheduled for the Emmaus Pastorate for 2019. It will be held on Wednesday, November 20, in the St. Mark Conference Room at 6:30 p.m. Parents, if you are expecting a child, please plan to attend this baptismal class.

Pray for Vocations from

the Emmaus Pastorate!

The Emmaus Pastorate offers Spiritual Direction as a way of journeying with someone on your spiritual path. Sister Norma Jean Holthaus, OSF, comes to St. Mark once a month for direction times. If you are interested, contact Sister Norma Jean (319-750-6032 or [email protected]).

Our Sympathy and Prayers to~ The family of Donna Larson who passed

away on September 8, in Elkader. Donna’s funeral was held September 14 at Sacred Heart Church, Volga.

Congratulations to~ Levi and Courtney Goedken, whose

daughter Eleanor was baptized at St. Mark on September 15. Jake and Lacey Galloway, whose daughter

Scarlett was baptized at St. Mark on September 15. Mitchell Glawe and Brooke Engelken who

were married September 21, at St. Mark. Welcome New Parishioners~ Kurt and Brittany Gordan and their

children, Chezlee and KJ, who recently joined St. Joseph Parish.

When you think of God, what comes to mind? There’s a popular young comedian who pokes fun of the idea that there’s an old white guy with a long gray beard floating around in the sky. That might have worked for us as

kids, but how do you relate to God? The Emmaus Pastorate RCIA program will talk about that at our next session on Thursday, September 26. at 7:00 p.m. in the apartment of St. Mary Parish in Strawberry Point. We’d love to see you there!

Pastorate Meeting Schedule

Sept 24 Sacred Heart/St. Patrick Pastoral Council, Sacred Heart Basement, 6:30 p.m. Sept 26 St. Joseph Knights of Columbus, 7:30 p.m.

The Power of Mass

by Bert Ghezzi

Reflections of Daily Attendees

“Daily Mass is crucial to my

spiritual life, and when I attend

Mass after having missed for some days, it’s

as if I’m returning home. The mystery of the

Mass, where the God of creation comes to

me, is astounding and awesome and shakes me

through.” ~George E.~

PRAY AND FAST FOR AN END TO ALL VIOLENCE

For Parents and Children

from the book—Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

We encourage all parents to take

advantage of this weekly

opportunity to engage their

children with the Mass and

deepen their appreciation for the

richness of their faith life.

We are called to be good stewards of the

created world, and all the creatures within it.

Pope Francis explored this calling in his

encyclical, Laudato Si’. This week, work on

being mindful of all the resources you

consume. Pay attention to how your family

can recycle, reuse, and conserve more

thoughtfully. Are there any lifestyle changes

your family can make to be better stewards

of the resources you have been given?

Discussion Questions

1. If we were very rich and had every

material thing we ever needed or wanted,

do you think we would still have time for

God? Why or why not?

2. What resources has God given to us? How

have we shown ourselves to be worthy of

His trust?

The Annual Clarity Clinic Fund-raising Banquet will be held Thursday, October 10, at the Grand River

Center in Dubuque. The doors open at 6:00 p.m. with a sit-down dinner at 6:30. The speaker will be Brandon Monahan from the Heritage House. The event will end around 8:30. The event is FREE but there will be an appeal at the end of the evening. There is no obligation to give. If interested in attending, contact Dennis Rima (563-557-3123 or email [email protected]). Registrations are due by October 3. The Back-to-Church Sunday Celebration was held at St. Patrick, St. Mark, St. Joseph, and St. Mary Parishes this past weekend. The celebration will be held this weekend at Sacred Heart in Volga. A big thank you goes to all parishioners who participated in our outreach efforts—the receptions after Mass, your presence and hospitality to those who joined us. It is important that we do everything we can to build the Kingdom of God and you played a big role in that ministry. Thank you again to everyone who participated in any way. Father John

A Big Thank You Goes Out to everyone who attended our first community presentation “Active Shooters in Church and Public Places” held on September 15. It was gratifying to see so many people (50+) there. Thanks also

to Amy Holst and Tim Engelhardt for sharing their knowledge with us. Please mark your calendars for the next presentation in our series—“Suicide/At-Risk Behavior” that will be held on January 12 at Starmont High School.

Are You Recently Engaged? Are You Starting to Plan Your Wedding? Terrific! The Church is excited to assist you in preparing for your lifelong commitment! Some quick points to be aware of: • Marriage preparation usually begins at least six

months prior to a desired wedding date. • No dates are scheduled until the couple meets

with the pastor and fills out the necessary documents for marriage.

• If one or both have been in a previous marriage regardless of denomination or marriage by a justice of the peace, a Decree of Nullity (Annulment) will need to be obtained in order to continue receiving the sacraments.

The best thing to do is contact the Church as soon as you are engaged so that we can help you right from the start! Sick Calls, Hospital Visits and Anointing—This is just a reminder to contact the Emmaus Pastorate Office (563-928-7200) if you or someone you know is hospitalized or needs spiritual care. If in doubt, call. Don’t assume that the office has been informed. We would rather have several calls than none. Thank you for helping us help you!

Worldwide Marriage Encounter—Learn something new about your spouse and how to live your Marriage Sacrament as God intended by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend. The next session will be held November 1-3 at Coralville. For information or to register, go to iowa-wwme.org or call 563-608-3305.

The St. Joseph Discussion Group will be reading the book, Life of the Beloved, by Henri J.M. Nouwen this fall. Beginning the middle

of October, we will have five to six discussions on this relatively short book. The author describes the words Jesus shared in the breaking of the bread. It is a very powerful book on the center of our faith, the Eucharist. Anyone in the pastorate is welcome to attend. If you are interested, call or text Fran Zichal (563-880-0873) and she will get the book to you. As soon as the books are distributed, Fran will give participants the specific dates. committee for planning and organizing our Community Picnic. We had a great attendance and everyone had a wonderful time! A big thank you to Molly Scherf and her committee for planning the Community picnic. It was a fun evening. To all those who donated items, worked, and

attended the picnic. The children loved the train ride and the adults had a great time playing BINGO. The food was delicious and the fellowship was fantastic. To those who donated to the Silent Auction and

the Raffle. The raffle was greatly supported and bids were made on all of the auctioned items. Both were exciting and a great success.

Final Totals for all areas of the event will be posted soon. Watch for the names Raffle Winners to be posted soon in the Bulletin.
