What We Did This SummerFaculty Keeps on Learning

By Kate Crachy, Saints Religion Instructor

I was fortunate enough this past summer to be selected for the 2019-2020 Action Research cohort of IBSC, which included a trip to Montréal, Canada for the annual International Boys' School Coalition Conference. While there, I was able to meet other like-minded teachers who also share a desire to continue their own education in boys learning and research-based best practices. The conference kicked off what will be a full year of designing and executing my own action research proposal, where I plan to investigate the most effective methods of teaching critical thinking skills in my Ethics II class with seniors. Although the research group was kept quite busy during the conference between general session speakers and breakout discussions, I was lucky to have a few chances to experience some of the breathtaking sites the city has to offer. The past few months seem to have flown by, but the opportunity to participate in the IBSC and visit a beautiful city for the first time was, without a doubt, the most memorable part of my summer.

By John Lamerato, English Department, Chairman and Senior Class Moderator

This summer, I had the pleasure of both attending and presenting at The International Boy's School Coalition's annual conference in Montréal, Canada. The theme of the conference was: "Boys and the Arts, Great Minds, Big Hearts" and my presentation focused on using strategies to help boys feel more comfortable writing their own poetry. In addition to giving a talk, the conference provided the unique opportunity to interact with fellow professionals from around the world who share the same mission of educating young men. It was invaluable to be able to listen to world-class speakers discuss best practices in boy's education and to bring some of those lessons back to the staff at Saints."

Altar of St. Joseph’s Oratory, the most spacious Catholic Church in Canada. Designated a national shine, St. Joseph’s (built in 1967) is located atop Mont-Royal and is considered to have the largest domes in North America.

IBSC conference attendees from St. Augustine High were [left to right], religion instructor Kate Crachy, School President Edwin Hearn and English Dept. Chair, John Lamerato, who was one of the presenters. His topic was within the Boys and the Arts segment of the convention.

Beautiful Montreal is where Saints faculty members along with school President Edwin Hearn attended the IBSC boys school convention held this summer.

LEADERSHIP. Members of Saints leadership met on campus earlier this summer as part of the annual Saints Board of Directors Retreat. Thank you for all that you do to make Saints among the best high schools in the nation. [clockwise from lower left]: Deacon Dick Hardick, OSA; Dan Morrin; Saints President Ed Hearn; Board Chair David Canedo; John Keller, OSA; Bill Hamlin; Rob Leach; Provincial Gary Sanders, OSA; Jim Zehentbauer; Principal Jim Horne; Linda Small; Casey Callery and Jim Dixon.

LOOKING AHEAD. Here’s a behind the scenes look as Senior Saintsman Jackson Bautista posed for his Class of 2020 cap and gown photo.

ADIOS, PADRE KEVIN. When Fr. Gary Sanders stepped down in 2015 as Provincial of the Western Region of the Augustinian Order, the Very Rev. Kevin Mullins was elected his successor. Fast forward to this spring the roles have reversed. Fr. Kevin, who was ordained in 1990, has been transferred by the Augustinians to the Chicago area. And, Fr. Gary Sanders, once again has been elected Provincial of the West.

MAX MASS. Fall fair weather on Wednesdays ups the chances for an outdoor Mass atop St. Augustine Commons with Saints Chaplain Fr. Max Villeneuve.

UNSUNG HEROES. Helping others was the mission of Mr. Patrick Thomsen’s Speech Class as they spent a day earlier this year at the San Diego Food Bank, where they packed 6,700 pounds of produce. That much food eventually fed 37,000 persons. Caritas!

PIZZA PALS. Members of the Class of 1961 keep in touch five times a year at Filippi’s Pizza Grotto in Little Italy. That’s quite a crew. Saints Alumni Director Chris Cashman (’93) is asking other alums if they wish to have regular class reunion meetings. If so contact him for more info at [email protected] Speaking of Italian cuisine, the Romano Family retired their Paesano’s Restaurant on 30th Street in North Park after several generations, according to Joe Romano (Saint class of ’73).

In business since 1967, Paesano’s will be replaced by Tabu Shabu, a small chain serving Japanese style hot pot cuisine. Pekin Café, another vintage North Park (1931) restaurant familiar with Saints alums has closed at University and Granada Streets. No word on who will take over the space. Local restaurant media has reported both Paesano and Pekin families closed simply because it was time to retire. They are missed.

A Message from Your APA Board

Welcome Saints Parents & Supporters to the 2019-2020 school year! The Austin Parents Association (APA), a collaborative partnership of Saints parents and school administrators, is a vital part of the Saints community. Together we work to create an enriched learning environment and a sense of community and involvement among Saints families and our School, with the vision of providing a memorable “Saints Experience” for all students and their families.

Your active participation in the APA and its events allows you to be a part of your son’s learning environment and the school in a way that adds tremendous value to the Saints Experience.

Through the APA you will have an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between home and school by becoming informed, involved and educated in your son’s school and its activities. It is only through your active participation that together we can foster a wide range of educational, spiritual, recreational, and cultural programs that will continue to enrich our school community and provide the boys a high-quality Augustinian, Catholic education. We look forward to meeting you and getting you involved!

Sincerely,

Janelle WhittonJanelle Whitton, APA President

Photo Essay by William Hill, Saints Dad.GUEST BLOG / By Taylor Cratty, KUSI News

To say the Saints varsity football team came marching in would be an understatement after putting on quite an opening night in week 1 defeating the Barons from Bonita Vista High

37-7. Saints first action of 2019 started with a touchdown on the first play of the game, Junior Byron Cardwell ran 70 yards for his first of two touchdowns tonight. Before the confetti settled, Senior Angelo Peraza would find Senior Samuel Scaife (’20) with a 20 yard pass in the endzone. Just before the second quarter Peraza finds Christian Scott (’20) with a 16 yard touchdown pass bringing the score 27-0 St. Augustine. Opening the second quarter similar to the first, Senior Tyson McWilliams returned a punt to the end zone for 47 yards. After a missed field goal the Saints added three more to stretch the lead to 37-0. The Baron’s were able to hang on to the ball long enough to get themselves on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter. St. Augustine will be heading to Eastlake Aug. 30 then Loyola of Los Angeles on Sept. 6 at Mesa College. September action includes away at Otay Ranch on Sept 13 and Helix High at Mesa College on Sept. 20. Saints have a bye Sept. 27. Impact player Byron Cardwell, a running back and linebacker, is one of the state’s best backs. As a Sophomore he gained 1,501 yards from scrimmage. Entering his junior season, Cardwell has already heard from USC, UCLA and Washington State seeking his college services. Another returning letterman, QB Angelo Peraza, a senior, is a play-maker. In the mix is Michael Ambagtsheer, a tight end, who gets open and is also a powerful blocker.

Saints varsity’s personality, though, is on defense where blitz-heavy linebackers helped compile 147 tackles for losses in 2018. Key Players: Byron Cardwell (RB-LB); Michael Ambagtsheer (TE, DE); Angelo Peraza (QB); Tangi Pongia (OL); Sam Scaife (WR); Nick Sylvester (OL); Connor Heffler (LB); Eavan Gibbons (S); Tyson McWilliams (CB-WR); Malcolm Williams (LB) and Jahil Tucker (CB).

Taste of Saints a Huge Hit!

The second annual TASTE of SAINTS came to life this past May in the St. Augustine Commons. It was a great evening and success with more than 500 attendees

this year. We kept it in the family by featuring only Saints-owned businesses and local breweries, wineries, caterers, restaurants and live entertainment. Proceeds for this 21 and older event went towards the Saints Endowment Fund. This year, we added a VIP event with an earlier start time that included a more intimate start to the evening with deluxe tastings, champagne toasts, music by the Saints 32nd Jazz Band and each guest received a complimentary Saints logo YETI tumbler. Save the date for our next TASTE of SAINTS to be held on Saturday, May 16, 2020 on the rooftop! Saints families wishing to be involved in next May’s Taste of Saints as a sponsor, vendor or if you would like to reserve a private cabana, contact Casey Callery, Director of Community Relations & Special Events, at (619)764-5541 or [email protected].

COOL & COOLER. Here’s Saints President Mr. Ed Hearn explaining why there was no door prize at this year’s Taste of Saints fundraiser, but as he points out there was a much cooler top prize offered: a YETI ice chest (complete with Saints logo) won by Jennifer and Aaron Wahl (parents of Sophomore twins Lucas and Tyler).

She was six and she was at the back, drawing, and the teacher said this little girl hardly ever paid attention, and in this drawing lesson she did. The teacher was fascinated, and she went over to her and she said, “What are you drawing?” And the girl said, “I’m drawing a picture of God.” And the teacher said, “But nobody knows what God looks like.” And the girl said, “They will in a minute.” There is a pure joy in this open, honest and tremendously self-confident response. And it, in a simple way, communicates the joy that resides in the discovery process. On behalf of the faculty and staff at Saints, I want to welcome you to a new school year and share with you our enthusiasm to work for and with all of you. Please pray for us and for blessings upon the journey toward insight and discovery for our Saintsmen.

In the Spirit of Catholic Education,

Dixon, were long term North Park residents and St. Patrick’s parishioners. They had 11 children (I was number 8), 44 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Point being….there are more Saintsman to come! They had a very warm place in their hearts for St. Augustine High School and were very close to the Augustinians. They believed fervently in the purpose and mission of the School.

It has been a thrill to watch the progress that has occurred at Saints, particularly over the last four decades. Not only the beautiful campus and important physical plant, but also the tremendous growth in the academic and spirituality of the program. As a board member, I have been greatly impressed with the commitment of the Augustinians, alumni, teachers and senior leadership. I have seen first-hand the continual effort to improve the experience and quality of education at Saints. It is wonderful to see the results of this ongoing effort when you visit the campus and engage with students and staff.

Although I never had the opportunity to attend Saints (Hoover High ’77) I feel like, in a real sense, that I have. I have gotten to know so many Saintsman over the years (four brother’s-in-law) and have always admired the true brotherhood that exists at the school. It was gratifying to see our sons develop long term relationships with their fellow Saintsman that will last a lifetime.

I retired in June of 2017 from Wells Fargo Home Mortgage after 30 years with the company. I was regional manager of the builder division on the west coast. Caroline and I have been married for 31 years and are both graduates of USD.

It has been an honor and privilege to serve on the board of directors and to be involved in the various capital campaigns. We are now underway in our effort to create an Endowment at St. Augustine. As a board member I have listened to and witnessed the heartfelt desire of the Augustinians to keep St. Augustine affordable to all. Needless to say, the endowment campaign will be central in fulfilling this desire.
