●Magnolia Forest subdivision started the Great Magnolia Forest Yard Sale in 1980, and it attracts a crowd, so expect the traffic to move slowly in areas with multiple sales. It is an opportunity to sell items that you no longer have a use for, and it also reduces the number of yard sales that would probably occur in the subdivision throughout the year. In more recent years, residents in other subdivisions in the area have piggy-backed onto our sale, which increases the traffic on Military Road. Please drive carefully, and be alert to pedestrians milling about. There will be a deputy on duty to help with traffic congestion. There are expenses that go along with this event, and it must be self-supporting. If you plan to participate, please register and pay your registration fee!

Waste Management Dumpster
Waste Management is providing Magnolia Forest with a roll-off container for residents to utilize for bulk trash disposal. We are coordinating the waste bin availability with the Oct. 5 Magnolia Forest Garage Sale. That way, as you are cleaning out your house for the garage sale, you can purge bulky items. The dumpster will be available from October 04-07. It will be located at the Magnolia Forest Stables at the end of Crowes Landing.
Also, Household Hazardous Waste collection will be on October 26.
Proactive Homeowner’s Association
The MFHOA’s top priority is to serve you, our resident and to enhance our neighborhood community. With recent house fires in the neighborhood, a concern about fire truck access to Ashland Drive was brought to the Board’s attention. Our HOA pro-actively contacted Gene Bellisario and the fire chiefs for Dis-tricts 1 and 11 about our concerns and safety for our resi-dents. Thankfully, some of the fire trucks are able to go through the Ashland Drive entrance, albeit with difficulty due to the tight turn (please see picture). It was requested that the bushes stay trimmed to facilitate access in case of an emergen-cy, since fire trucks are also dispatched to 911 calls requesting ambulance services. The fire chief acknowledged that not all of the trucks can make it through the Ashland Drive entrance and have noted that for future dispatches. Fire Chief Kauf-mann also had his personnel check fire truck accessibility for a number of tight curves and cul-de-sacs in Magnolia Forest, such as Houmas Court.
Please let your board members know if you have any concerns or ideas on how we can help improve our community.
We will host the Magnolia Forest Garage sale on Oct. 5 and the Halloween Hayride on Oct. 31. Please let us know if you have a trailer we can borrow for the hayride since we are ex-pecting over 100 kids.
Home Safety Tips
Recently, there has been a rise in attempted breaking and entering of homes in the greater Slidell area. Many of these attempts occur in the late evening hours, around 10 pm. We encourage residents to not leave the house completely dark. A simple, cheap way to discourage criminals is to leave a lamp turned-on. LED bulbs use very little electricity and do not generate heat like traditional bulbs. You can purchase a LED bulb for as little as a dollar at locations like Dollar Tree. If someone knocks on your door at night, when you are not expecting anyone, please turn on your lights, alerting them that someone is in the house. For your safety, please do not open the door. Following are other steps you can take to discourage burglars:
Make your home look occupied, with a light turned on or a vehicle in the driveway.
Make it difficult to break-in by locking exterior doors and windows.
Leave lights on when you go out. Automatic timers for lights are great deterrents when you are away for a lengthy time.
Keep your garage door closed and locked.
Recommend you install deadbolt locks on exterior doors, since push button locks are easy for burglars to open.
Recommend you install adequate exterior lighting, including motion-sensitive lights for side and back yards.
Never leave keys under doormats, flowerpots, or other “secret” hiding places

Gardens of the Month
The August newsletter did not accurately reflect the Garden of the Month of July. Below are the Gardens of the Month for July and August:
July
The Magnolia Forest Garden Club has awarded their Garden of the Month for July to the family of
Florence Onstad, 102 Tara Court. Even in the heat of the summer, this home with its beautiful land-
scaping was so inviting. You can see agapanthus, petunias, marigolds, hibiscus, begonias and
three different colors of caladiums. The yard is on a corner lot so you can see the variety of trees
and base plants like camellias and camellia sasanquas around the home as well as the park-like
setting in the back. The patio is gorgeous with numerous multi-potted planters and huge pots of
mandevillas. Congratulations to the Onstad family at 102 Tara Court for having a beautiful well-kept
yard.
Judges for July were Judy Cougle and Pam Anderson.
August
The Magnolia Forest Garden Club has awarded the Garden of the Month for August to Christo-pher and Sarah Reynolds at 471 Parlange.
What a refreshing sight to see such a well balanced landscape with beds of bright colors of gin-ger and blooming Agapanthus combined with splashes of green plant material. The overall land-scape is well manicured with beds in excellent condition. Congratulations to Chris and Sarah.
Judges for August were Barbara Burgueno, Lynell Braun, and Janet Bernard.
Magnolia Forest Garden Club is a federated member of the Louisiana Garden Club, Inc., The Na-tional Garden Club, Inc., and The Deep South Garden Club, Inc.
