From the Editor

The auditors have returned the club’s 2017/18 accounts and they are enclosed for your information. The annual general meeting is coming up in October and it would be good to start the discussion on the future direction of the club. As I mentioned last month, we

should start thinking about the future of the club: what’s the next step? In the meantime, we aim to keep serving smørrebrød at Café Danmark, but we need fresh volunteers. The Scandinavian Festival is on Sunday 9 September 18, just a couple of weeks away and we’ll be there, serving hot dogs and Faxe Kondi, Skovlyst and even a glass of sparkling, if you like. This year, æbleskiver are back on the menu with Madeleine and Paul busy baking – if you would like to help in any of the stalls, let us know, we can always use more hands. See you there!

WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS

Poul Pava

Poul Pava is a Danish artist who specializes in a naive and spontaneous style, depicting the

human form in his childlike paintings and drawings.

He has been painting for 20 years and has many other strings to

his bow - poet, columnist and jazz musician to name just a few.

He describes his motif as "the child in us all" and it is this very

contrast to the fine porcelain that aida is using for its new product

range, which includes thermos mugs, glasses, bowls, plates,

dishes, tablecloths, coasters and placemats. For sale at the

Danish Club stall at the festival at really good prices!

A very Norse tour of Scotland and Iceland (part 3) By Kim Tvede

The Icelandic experience We travelled to the Westman islands in the south of Iceland. These islands are famous for a volcano burying some of the township of Vestmannaeyjar in the 1970s as a modern-day Pompeii. The 3000 inhabitants evacuated on the fishing fleet, but returned to prevent ash from collapsing houses and to arrest the lava flow from blocking the harbour by using NATO seawater jets. Icelandic folk are tough and don’t easily give up. The island was also raided for slaves in 1647 by Barbary corsairs from 3000 miles away in Morocco, and lost half its population to the raid. I only then found out that the seas around Iceland had been fished by English fisherman since the 1400s. Iceland has a long history of links to the rest of the world. However the name of the Westman group of islands stems from earlier Norse settlement. Some Westmen (Irish) slaves killed their overseer and escaped in boats. (Icelandic folk today have around 30+% Irish DNA; more than the rest of Scandinavia and showing the greater link to Ireland through slaves and marriage to the Celts). They got as far as the islands and were caught and killed there. The name commemorates the event. The stormy weather had us stuck there for longer than anticipated as the ferry could not run and we ended evacuating some days late in a little Cessna 207 aircraft over several hours at five people per shuttle flight. The Island had a reconstructed Norse homestead longhouse. It was bigger than the Scottish black-houses but otherwise very similar. We went on to experience the Jokulsarlon Glacier lagoon (of 007 movie fame), Geysir thermals, Gullfoss waterfall in the highlands and the Thingvellir rift valley site of the first Norse parliament, Althing, in around 930, and where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, hence the geothermal activity.

A visit to a homestead below the Eyjafjallajokull volcano that stopped flights across Europe when it erupted in recent years gave us some insight into the character of Icelandic people and their cultural heritage. That homestead was flooded by melting glacial water (the volcano erupted under a glacier) then buried under five metres of ash. The family evacuated but returned to clear ash from the top of the barn to allow livestock to breathe. Over months they removed the ash from their fields and facilities and got the farm back in working order. A massive job! They realised they could have given up, but when one lives close to catastrophic disaster, one learns to deal with what comes.

Iceland is a dangerous place. People die. Rogue waves can sweep up beaches and rocks to catch people unaware (don’t take night-time strolls along the beach) and wreck fishing fleets. Thermal springs can scald and burn. Sheep and Icelandic horses (like the old sure-footed sturdy Viking horses they descended from) graze on open pastures in the highlands and can get into trouble, as can those looking after them when the landscape or weather turns treacherous.

It is interesting to consider where such folk come from. Volcanic eruption of Mount Hecla in the middle ages killed half the population of Iceland at the time. The current population is still less than that of Tasmania. They have no military, but a well-equipped coast guard and civil defence for emergencies. Before WWII Iceland was under Danish rule, but when the Nazis invaded Denmark, England invaded Iceland with 20 000 troops. The bunkers are still evident. After the war Iceland became independent and claimed fishing rights to 200km, effectively decimating much of the English fishing industry after centuries of their fishing Icelandic waters. When Harald Fine-Hair finally unified Norway, those who had opposed him found themselves in precarious situations. Floki of the three ravens (yes, Floki, the ship-builder in Vikings who tried in vain to break the revenge cycles), had previously settled Iceland but it had failed to prosper, though Floki later returned to Iceland to live. Even so, Iceland presented as a frontier land where one could escape the law of Norway and other places. Some wealthy folk packed up and left to settle Iceland. The only inhabitants were some reclusive Irish monks … who ‘disappeared’ after the Norse began settling. The Norse settlers did not want royal oversight and taxes, just cultural unity. However, to deal with disputes they developed a parliament, Althing, of the chief homesteaders from the four sides of Iceland that met in Thingvellir and developed rules and adjudicated disputes. This worked for some decades but since they had no executive arm to enforce laws, depended on compensation, exile, execution, and agreement of everyone to follow through. Some powerful families began corrupting the system in favour of their own clans. This led to lots of revenge activity and raiding. Thus, when the king of Norway finally convinced some folk to advocate for royal rule, it was eventually accepted under King Olaf Trygvarsson. With it came Christianity.

Those people who fell foul of the rule of law could either retreat into the highlands of the interior for a tenuous existence as outlaws or move to the new frontier of Greenland. Erik the Red was one such person. His son, Leifur Eiriksson, went further and there is evidence they settled North America. The old saga record of this event was used to determine the description of the likely settlement places. The statue outside the stark cathedral in Reykjavik is not of a saint or king, it is of Leifur Eiriksson, with battle axe to hand. These are the sorts of people who still live under active volcanoes and farm and fish for a living. We lost time in Iceland being stuck in Vestmannaeyja, and because it is such an interesting and beautifully wild place geologically, biologically, and with its cultural past so evident. We are still interested to return and experience more of this Norse centre. We also want to know more of the people who used the seas and rivers as sorts of super-highways so as to see a trip to Orkney, The Hebrides, Ireland, Norway, Denmark, to Rome, and even Constantinople, as just a part of life. Further, they had an expectation of return to a cultured and affluent life in Iceland after accruing status and wealth. Not many Icelanders migrate, even today. The land and families seem to call them. The population is growing. In the meantime, we read and recommend the ABC book ‘Sagaland’ by Richard Filder and Kari Gislason, available locally at around $40, as a lovely tale linking contemporary and old Iceland to its people, history and place in the world. If you want more background and scholarly content, also include the Penguin book, ‘The Sagas of the Icelanders’.

The Danish Club needs you!

By Soren Hoimark

Participation – new ideas – new muscle Most of your committee members have been on the committee for more than 10 years and we simply must have more new members of the committee to keep the club going and improving. We have over the past years undertaken a complete renovation of our great club house and now have the perfect basis to further develop activities for all our members. It’s our venue to use, so let’s use it. If you have an idea to host events in the club, one-off or regular, come forward and join the committee and be the person developing and managing that event with the support of the committee, of course. On our Café Danmark nights we manage well – mostly - thanks to members volunteering to help prepare food, set up the hall and clear up. These nights are very busy and we can always use an extra set of hands in the kitchen before/during/after the meal service, clearing tables and returning tables/chairs to their storage positions. If more of the members attending Café Danmark would give a hand once a year, your hardworking committee would be grateful. Remember the committee and other volunteers are doing this for a bit if fun and it is a great environment to work together in. We do enjoy the happy faces of our members having a great evening and it would encourage us to have more members appreciate our effort by giving a hand and showing your support. If you can’t come early and help prepare food, come along, have your meal and help for an hour or so – it all helps. Please contact me – [email protected] – and let me know

a) If you would like to join the committee and participate

b) If you would like to help out at Café Danmark

Magasin fejrer 150 år

1868-2018

deres første forretning i Aarhus. Theodor Wessel & Emil Vett

Kgs.

Hver

afdelingscheferne uddannede i
