The much larger under cover area provided a great location for this event and it emphasized how much more space we now have at the new secondary campus. The English Principal gave a presentation on the School’s developments during academic year 2017-18, and outlined the plans for 2018-19. He also introduced new and returning teachers. In an attempt to ensure that all parents were able to follow the presentation it was translated in Khmer by Year 11 student Yay Vireak Bodh. This was followed by a similar presentation by the Khmer Principal, Mr. Sopheap. Parents were then offered to go a guided tour of the new school led by members of the High School Council. As is tradition the event ended with a light supper with drinks and refreshments during which teachers, students and parents met socially. We thank the High School and Primary School support staff who made the evening such a success.

  • Remembering 911 During the Tutor time on September 11, the school held a brief assembly. With the aid of video footage, Mr. Phil addressed the students, reminding them of the tragic events 17 years ago. Few of ISSR’s students were born at that time, but all of the staff were. He told the students that everyone could remember what they were doing that day when the fatal news broke of two hijacked aircraft flying directly into the twin towers in New York City. Mr. Phil informed students of the event of 11 September 2001. He told them that soon after the aircraft had collided with the towers, that fires broke out and many people were trapped by flames on the upper floors. Heroic New York City firemen rushed to the scene in an attempt to rescue survivors of the initial blasts. Tragically both buildings collapsed into nothing but dust and rubble. Nearly 3000 people lost their lives that day. A further 6000 had multiple injuries, and countless thousands are still suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Despite audio problems on the video, it is great credit to ISSR students who sat there, quietly attentive, many open mouthed as the events unfolded. The tragedy of 911 will not be forgotten by our students. https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/09/september-11-pictures-remembrance/ New Teaching Staff

Only a week in and I already feel so at home here in Cambodia! This is an Asian country I hadn’t visited previously, so coming to join ISSR was a serious adventure for me. My home country is England where I have been teaching in secondary schools for the past four years. Six years ago I updated my qualifications to enable me to teach in secondary schools and my very first experience was working in Kuwait in the Middle East. Originally from ‘God’s Own Country’- Yorkshire, in the North of England, I have lived and worked in various parts of England but also in Singapore and KL, Malaysia. I am looking forward to exploring and enjoying the culture and natural world of Cambodia. I am very impressed with the students at ISSR. Their enthusiasm, diligence and respect for learning is outstanding and I consider myself privileged to be one of their teachers. Thank you for welcoming me so generously into your classroom.

    Academic Achievement Awards The following students were awarded Academic Achievement Awards for their outstanding results on the June 2018 IGCSE Examinations: Lucas Purnell: 3 A*, 6 A, 1 B grade; Centina Caboor: 3 A*, 2 A, 3 B grades; Gaia Giani: 5 A, 3 B grades; Danesh Mariapan 1A*, 3 A, 4 B grades; Philos Himm 3 A, 4 B grades.

  • RIP Dr. Beat Richner It was with great sadness that we heard about the death of Dr Beat Richner, the founder of the KanthaBopha Children’s Hospitals, at the age of 71 on Sunday 9th September. ISSR has had a long standing relationship with KanthaBopha hospitals in Siem Reap and support them through our various fundraising events throughout the year. Representatives from both Primary and High School Student Council visited KanthaBopha during the week to pay our respects and pass on our sympathies on behalf of our team. We know how many lives he affected and helped and he will be sadly missed by many.

Run to Give 7K On Sunday 23rd September twenty-five students and staff from our school took part in the 7km charity Run to Give event organised by the Courtyard by Mariott Hotel. It was a really tough run in the heat but Peace from Year 10 and Yuvan from Year 11 defended their title finishing joint first out of ISSR High School. It wasn’t all about speed though and we had some really awesome efforts from all students and staff and there was a huge, overwhelming sense of community spirit around the course. Everybody finished the run and there was a great feeling of achievement amongst the participants. Students participating raised money for the Angkor Hospital for Children and collected house points for their house. As a result we donated over 345 dollars to the Angkor Children Hospital as a school. Thanks again to all who participated, donated, or cheered on the runners that day. It was a hugely successful event in the school calendar and students are talking about next year already!

  • Sport and Physical Education The move to the new campus and the expanded playing fields, plus the appointment of a full-time secondary PE teacher, Ms. Claudine van Diemen, has seen a huge renaissance in sporting opportunities for the high school students. PE lessons - term 1 In the PE lessons the students learn a wide range of techniques and tactics in a variety of sports. They can demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic rules and know how to keep score. In term 1 all students focused on teamwork in a team sport. The year 7,8 and 9 students improved on their basketball skills and the year 10, 11, 12 and 13 worked on their volleyball skills. Tennis was also offered to all year groups, as it was new to most of the students and the PE department we were lucky to have received new tennis rackets. PHE – Physical Health Education Whilst PE focusses on the techniques, tactics, teamwork and rules in sports, in PHE students learn about health and safety in sports activities. In term 1 the importance of warming-up and cooling down is covered and students have to demonstrate their own warming-ups. In the swimming pool they learn about water safety (in the pool and the sea), survival techniques and rescue techniques. IGCSE PE Year 11 students are getting theoretically and practically prepared for their IGCSE examinations. In the practical sessions they don’t only demonstrate their own skills, but also analyse their classmate’s skills. The year 10 students have carried out a variety of fitness tests and they are learning how to improve fitness components by using a variety of training types. After school sports Twice a week the volleyball club and once a week the basketball club have training in school. We have about 22 students participating in the after school sports clubs. Soon we are hoping to play a friendly game against another International School in Siem Reap.Students have also had a kickboxing introduction lesson at the Kingdom Fight Gym and some students have shown interest to continue kickboxing after school. In term 2 students will be able to participate in after school swimming and touch rugby training. Sports hour Every week the students enjoy a variety of sports during the sports hour. They play sports in school or travel to Chun Lung Sport Center where they can play on full sized volleyball and badminton courts and football and other ball sports on artificial grass.

    After School Swimming

After the Pchum Benh holiday swimming lessons will start on Wednesday 17th of October 2018 and will run on regular schooldays Wednesday 4 p.m. – 5 p.m.

  • Term 1 Progress Reports Term 1 Progress reports comprise a single page document completed by teachers on October 5th and issued to parents via the School diary. Focusing on academic progress, the assessments will identify any academic challenges a student faces well in advance of any examination. The Term 1 Progress Reports are designed to identify students who are underachieving and / or whose behaviour and attitude are below expectations. The format allows for immediate identification of causes for concern across more than one subject. The Tutor will then prepare a list of specific students who will be discussed by teachers collectively at an assessment meeting during which appropriate courses of action can be established to address the students’ needs. Students will be graded according to the following criteria: Attainment: The number 1 > 5 is an overall judgment of the student’s attainment over the term.

    1

The student consistently displays excellent knowledge and application in all areas of the subject. Class work, homework and assessments are consistently high. There may be the very occasional slip but this

does not detract from the overall quality of the tasks. Targets set are exclusively designed to enhance the student’s potential within the subject rather than to

    address any weakness.

    2

The student consistently displays very good knowledge and application in all areas of the subject, although there are some minor weaknesses preventing the attainment of Grade 1. Alternatively, there is a weakness in one area of the subject which prevents the attainment of Grade 1. This characteristic is also displayed in one or more of class work, homework or assessments.

Most targets set are designed to enhance the student’s potential within the subject although there will be the occasional target which addresses a weakness preventing the attainment of the higher grade.

    3

Class work, homework and assessments most frequently reflect a satisfactory performance. All or the majority of results are within the mid-range or ‘pass’ mark within the subject criteria. Some targets set are designed to enhance the student’s potential in the subject but most address current

    weaknesses.

    4

The student’s knowledge and application are variable / borderline in some or all areas of the subject. Targets set are exclusively or almost exclusively designed to address current weaknesses, but weaknesses

which can easily be rectified. Class work, homework and assessments do not consistently meet the expected levels for this year group.

5 The student displays considerable weakness in all or most areas of the subject. There is evidence of

significant gaps in knowledge or inability in application which seriously limit progress. Targets set are designed exclusively to address current weaknesses.

Effort: the grading for effort, which comprises a number of criteria, namely: attentiveness / participation / independent learning / self-organisation / working with others can, for the purposes of the Term 1 Progress Report, merely be noted as:
