TRANSCRIPT
As we come to the end of our busy summer season, it is time again to recognize our wonderful Club employees. Without their dedication and friendliness, our Club experience would be significantly less than the wonderful experience we have during our time at the Club.
I therefore ask you to join me in supporting our employees and their families by supporting
Wilmington Country Club’s Centennial Scholarship Fund. This fund was started as part of our Club’s Centennial Celebration in 2001 with the first awards being made in 2002. Under the direction of the Centennial Scholarship Committee, chaired by Jamie Murray, this fund has grown to over $500,000. Each year, applications are received from Club employees and their family members requesting support for their educational costs. In the past year, 487 Club members have generously contributed to this fund.
At the June 2016 meeting, the Centennial Scholarship Committee determined that all 21
applicants were deserving of awards and awarded a total of $49,250. In the next few weeks, our members will receive a request from the Centennial Scholarship
Committee to support this scholarship fund. I urge all our members to support our employees and their families by contributing to this scholarship fund.
As always, thanks for reading. Joseph F Hacker IIIPresident

September Greetings! The seasons are changing! After one of the hottest summers in memory, I’m pretty confident that
we all are ready for some shorter days and cooler nights. I know the summer annuals are looking a bit tired and ready to be replaced by fall mums. There are other signals to indicate that summer will soon be just a memory. One is the pool. Once again, our intention is to extend the pool season one weekend past Labor Day. The pool will close Tuesday through Friday immediately following the Labor Day weekend, but will be reopen Saturday and Sunday, September 10th and 11th with hours 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. The Café will also be open the same days and hours. As in past years, there will be no guest restrictions for the final two days (guest fees will apply, however) . . . let’s hope for good weather!
Another signal that seasons are changing is that we just had a meeting to review this year’s Christmas decorations. It reminded me to remind you that there is no better place to hold your Holiday Celebration than your Club. Barbara mentioned to me that several good dates remain available. In fact, the calendar permitted shifting Candlelight Dinners a little closer to Christmas this year to open up some desirable mid-week evenings. Whether your event is for 20 people or 200, personal or business, give us a call and let us show you how easy and painless Holiday entertaining can be.
Inside the Clubhouse, September marks the beginning of the “Dining Season”. Formal and informal menus both undergo some minor adjustment to keep seasonal. Casual outdoor dining will continue to be available on the Club’s various patios as long as the weather holds. But why not consider dressing up a bit and joining friends and family in the Dining Room? Many of you take full advantage of our offer for a celebratory dinner on your birthday. The most frequent comment heard from members after enjoying their special evening is “why don’t we do this more often?” Good question! . . . Why don’t you? Don’t wait until you have something special to celebrate. Just come! You’ll be glad you did.
My next item is our annual declaration of amnesty. We know that occasionally some Club items may unintentionally find their way home. Beer steins, glasses, silverware, demo racquets or clubs, fitness and locker towels, etc. all have a tendency to disappear over the busy summer. Once you have them you don’t know how to bring them back without it appearing like they were “taken”. Not to worry. September is the month when you can simply bring these items back where they belong - no questions asked or judgments made! Returning any item means that replacements don’t have to be purchased which obviously helps reduce our operating costs.
In previous epistles, I have issued a plea for help in finding the history that makes your Club a special place. It hasn’t gone unnoticed and, over the years, we have received some wonderful pieces. Thank you. Many items are on display in the Heritage Hallway. Please understand that the treasure hunt never ends. We need you to keep looking for those images and artifacts from the “good old days” at the Club. So, when cleaning out that attic or basement, if you run across something Club related, don’t assume that it wouldn’t be what we’d like to have. Anything that brings back memories of a different time at the Club qualifies as a treasure and only gets more valuable as time marches on.
It seems like yesterday we were celebrating the opening of the pool and Café with a wonderful three-day Memorial Day weekend. Swim Meets, Sports Camps, Golf and Racquets Championships, July 4th Fireworks, and the mid-summer Campout are just some of the great memories of the season. I hope you have had an opportunity to take advantage of the facilities enjoying your favorite activity. If not, don’t despair - there is still a full complement of social, fitness, golfing and racquets activities planned, so plenty of opportunities remain! I’ll see you at the Club.

Please join us as Mark Donati, President of Donati Family
Vineyard, comes to Wilmington Country Club to showcase his family’s
wines.
Prior to becoming President, Mark ran family businesses in
California ranging from Real Estate Development to Agricultural
ventures. Through hard work and dedication, he effectively grew
these businesses into successful ventures. In 2010, Mark began a total
reorganization of Donati Family Vineyard by taking a small, local winery
and transforming it into a national brand with distribution in 30 states.
Today, Mark continues to strive to make Donati Family Vineyard into a
world-class winery, producing some of the finest wines from California’s
Central Coast.
Featured wines for the evening paired exquisitely with Chef
Tribbitt’s cuisine include: Unoaked Chardonnay, Claret, Cabernet
Sauvignon and two Bordeaux blends, Immigrant and Ezio.

Our September 6th selection, Norwegian by Night is Derek Miller’s widely acclaimed debut novel. While it begins as a crime thriller, it is much more. It’s about immigrants, war crimes, loss and family. It’s the story of a father who goes to war and the grief when a son dies in a different war. It’s the story of a child whose mother is murdered and who flees with an old man from the murderer. And it is the story about an unforgettable 82 year-old Jewish man, Sheldon Horowitz, who will continue to haunt you long after you have finished reading the novel. Sheldon is a widowed, outspoken New Yorker who reluctantly moves to Norway with his granddaughter, Rhea, and her Norwegian husband. One day, while Sheldon is alone in Rhea’s apartment, he hears the woman who lives upstairs arguing violently with a man. When she comes stomping downstairs, he opens his door and lets the terror-stricken woman in and discovers she has a young son. Sheldon’s flight to save this child is both exciting and tragic. Join us on the 6th at 4:00 p.m. in the Ladies’ Locker Room as Janet Robinson leads the discussion of this mesmerizing novel.
Our October 4th selection, Paul Kalanithi’s poignant memoir When Breath Becomes Air is a powerful book about life. It’s about being human, being mortal, and confronting and accepting one’s own mortality. Kalanithi was diagnosed at thirty-six years of age with terminal lung cancer and, by learning how to face death, he learned how to live.
We have a special meeting on October 11th at 4:00 p.m. in the Ladies’ Locker Room. Kathy Canavan is coming to give a talk on her book Lincoln’s Final Hours. This is a wonderful book, and we are so fortunate that she can be with us. We hope you will join us.

The Orchard OutlookHave you ever seen an orchard to rival the beauty of ours on the 9th hole of the North
Course? Once again, Peter Coates, our Arborist, and the Grounds Department staff have created a fantastic scene. They say you only have one chance to make a good first impression and our orchard, on the entrance road, serves that purpose for visitors.
Here are some observations from a recent survey:• We will have a good year with plenty of apples to go around. The Red Haven and Hale
Haven peaches are gone as of the end of August but there will be Elbertas to pick around Labor Day.
• Our pear trees - Moonglow, Magness and Atlantic Queen - are slow to produce but there will be a few samples later in the year.
• In the past, we have had Yellow Transparent and Lodi apples in August but we have lost those trees to old age. Beginning in September, the McIntosh and Red Spy varieties will be first to ripen, followed by Golden Delicious, Cortlands and Jonathans. Though there is a variation in yield from tree to tree, the Golden Delicious will, again, be a valuable source of eating and cooking apples.
• The later ripening trees - Red Rome Beauty, Empire, Red Delicious and Enterprise - will have plenty of fruit in October and November.
• The pick-and-eat people will be happy to hear that the Royal Gala trees are having a good year.
• As in the past, a map to locate the varieties will be available on the bulletin board near the handicap computer in the hallway above the Golf Shop. Green ribbons will be attached to the trees that we think are ready to pick.
Enjoy your orchard.

Racquets NewsEd McQuillin, Director of Racquets
Our Adult Tennis Club Championships are conducted during the month of September for Ladies’ and Men’s Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles at the A and B Levels. We are hosting the Delaware Doubles Challenge on Sunday, September 18th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This annual event features Men’s and Ladies’ Doubles and Mixed Doubles at all levels. A compass draw allows the team to keep playing whether they win or lose. Following tennis, we will have a courtside barbeque. The event benefits the Delaware Tennis Foundation which provides assistance to junior tennis programs across the state for underserved juniors.
Our junior tennis and squash programs are listed in the Bulletin. Be sure to sign up early due to the popularity of the junior racquets program. Tennis and squash block bookings have been sent out and should be returned to the Racquet Shop by September 9th.
Paddle season will be starting in late September under the direction of our new paddle professional, Lisa Murray. We are finalizing our paddle program for this season and will be sending out a separate mailing to all members about all the upcoming paddle programs and events for juniors and adults.
See you on the courts.

Can-Am CupWilmington Country Club will be
hosting the Can-Am Cup October 28th-
30th, 2016. The Can-Am Cup is a biannual
doubles squash competition between the
United States and Canada and is usually
referred to as the “Ryder Cup of Squash”.
The “Top 56” doubles players from each
country will be converging on Wilmington,
Delaware to compete for the Can-Am
Cup. The two best USA teams in each age
group, which includes Open 40+, 45+,
50+, 55+, 60+, 65+, 70+ and 75+ for men
and women, will battle our friends to the
North. It is a remarkable tournament that
has the excitement of a very close “Ryder
Cup” and makes for a very memorable
experience. Plenty of National flag waving
and patriotism with terrific competition
and camaraderie.
To keep up to date with team member
updates and building excitement, check
