Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year! Our theme for this year is We are Called…To Be Leaders of Hope and Mercy. The

scripture which we have chosen to guide us this year provides us with a truly beautiful image for Catholic education. It speaks to us

of nurturing our students so that they become leaders of hope and mercy who show compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and

patience. At the most fundamental level, they are learning how to clothe themselves in Christ to create a world of great hope.

Christ is the focal point of all that we are and all that we do in Catholic education. On August 30, our staff gathered together as a

community of Christ to renew their commitment to Catholic education and to celebrate the Eucharist together. This uplifting

celebration is such a wonderful way for each of us to celebrate our vocation and our role in fulfilling our District’s mission to

provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another.

Our ongoing commitment to providing the best possible educational opportunities to our students and their families is reflected in the

six goals that we have established in our District Plan for Continuous Growth (2016-2019). I invite you to visit our website at

https://www.ecsd.net/AboutUs/annual_reports/Pages/District-Plan-for-Continuous-Growth.aspx to look more deeply at the richness

of each of these goals and the promise that this plan holds for your children.

Goal One Live the Distinctiveness of Catholic Education

Goal Two Every Student is Successful

Goal Three The Edmonton Catholic School District is Inclusive

Goal Four Quality Teaching and School Leadership

Goal Five Engaged and Effective Governance

Goal Six First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Students are Successful

This is such an exciting year for Edmonton Catholic Schools. As we continue together on our mission to provide a Catholic

education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another, we are welcoming two

new schools and a new educational partnership into our Edmonton Catholic Schools family. St. John XXIII and St. Brendan

Catholic Elementary/Junior High Schools are opening this fall, and we welcome Kitaskinaw Educational Authority from the Enoch

Cree Nation into partnership with us. We are truly blessed to be able to serve these communities!

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, is a shining example of what it means to be a leader of hope and mercy. I would like to share one of

his many inspiring, hope-filled tweets with you as you begin the exciting journey of a new school year. “God is inviting you to

dream: He wants to show you that you can make the world a different place.” (July 30, 2016) This is the essence of Catholic

education, empowering our children to make the world a better place!

I wish everyone an amazing year of growth and discovery as members of our Edmonton Catholic Schools family!

Sincerely,

Joan Carr

Superintendent

Dear Friends,

Welcome to a new faith filled school year.

The theme for our new school year, “We are called…to be leaders of Hope and Mercy” continues to focus our attention

on the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy which has as its central message God’s forgiveness. Each of our schools

designated a Jubilee Door of Mercy, modelled on the official Doors of Mercy opened by our Holy Father, Pope Francis,

last December. As you walk through the Holy Door at your school may you be reminded that our God is a God of Hope

and Mercy. May we continue to be instruments of His hope and mercy in our schools and communities.

May God continue to bless each of you this school year.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

X Richard W. Smith

Attendance and Punctuality

This year the District will continue to use an automated phone callout system, Synervoice, to parents of students who are absent without notification. Please be advised that the automated system will continue to call all of your phone numbers, including emergency phone numbers, until someone is contacted regarding a student’s absence. Please help our office by leaving a mes-sage on our answering machine or by contacting the school when your child will be away or late. Thank you.

SynerVoice

A Powerful, easy-to-use communication Tool for Schools and parents

SchoolConnects, SynerVoice, parent notification service quickly delivers daily attendance, special announcements, and district messages to parents. The notification will very quickly send phone calls, email, and SMS text messages to parents. With this notification service, parents will be contacted for absences when the school has not been notified of your child’s absence from school and receive prompt information of transportation issues, parent nights, and emergencies.

Supervision / Door Policy

Supervision on our playground begins at 8:15 AM. For safety purposes, we ask that children not arrive before this time. Children in all classrooms have assigned entrance doors which they are to use upon arrival and upon being dismissed from school. All students are to enter and exit by the door they use for recess, lunch, fire drills, and in emergency crisis situations. Students who arrive late are to enter by the front door and then need to inform the office of their arrival to obtain a late slip to give to their teacher. For safety reasons all school doors are locked. All supervisors wear bright fluorescent safety vests and are clearly visible. During inclement weather, such as rain, severe cold or wind chill conditions (according to District guidelines), students will have access to designated and supervised entrances.

Front Door Entry System

The safety of our students and staff is our first priority. We have a front door entry system to assist us with security. All our doors, including our front door, will be locked at all times during our instructional day. Front doors will be unlocked from 8:00 to 8:45 AM. In between these times, the front door bell will need to be rung to gain entry. Parents, please remember to report to the office when you enter the school. Thanks for assisting us in keeping everyone safe.

Office Hours

Our normal office hours are from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM. You may reach us during that time. Outside of those hours, we ask that you leave a message and we will return your call. Occasionally, on a Thursday afternoon when we are in a staff meeting you may get an answering machine. At any other time if the answering machine is on, it is because we are in an assembly or working with the children, and no one is available in the office. If you leave a clear message, we will always return your call!

Please remember that we will be happy to give your child a message at the end of the day when possible. Please try to do this well before the 3:02 PM bell. We thank you for understanding that we do not interrupt classes for messages; we value our students’ instructional time.

Change of Address / Phone Number / Emergency Contacts

If you have recently moved or have a new telephone number, please notify the school at 780-472-2937. We require current information for our files and most importantly for emergencies. Please ensure that we have emergency contact information.

Lay-By and Staff Parking Lot -- No Parking

Please remember there is NO PARKING in the lay-by (drop off and pick up only), the handicapped parking area, near the school crosswalks, or in the staff parking lot. These are NOT parking areas. Our staff parking lot is full, so please do not use it as a drop off as there is no room to turn around and the area is not safe for pedestrians. The safety of your children is our first priority—choose safety not convenience.

Parent Parking Patrol

On behalf of the Parent Parking Patrol, welcome to the New School Year! Our primary purpose is the SAFETY of our children. Volunteers are needed for our lay-by, Monday to Friday morning shifts from 8:15-8:30, afternoon shifts from 3:00-3:20, except Thursday which is 12:00-12:20. Please stop by the office to sign up or return the bright yellow schedule that will be sent home the first week of September. If we don’t have enough volunteers, the lay-by will be closed. Thank you for volunteering!

Agenda Books

Students in Grades 1-6 will again be using an agenda book this year. This is a communication tool between home and school. The agenda book also contains THE PARENT HANDBOOK which has extensive information for parents, such as our school policies, programs, tools for parents to use to facilitate learning, and important dates for the current school year. We are very grateful to our School Council once again, for their generous funding to cover the costs of these books! We encourage parents to read this handbook to their child/children and to check the agenda nightly for home-work, assignments and communication letters, notes, etc. Please sign the agenda book nightly and have your child be responsible for returning this book to school each day. The agenda book is a wonderful organizational support for students, as well as a valuable communication tool for parents. Please refer to the agenda book for our school policy and year at a glance calendar.

School Council

Each year we establish a School Council that is made up of parents and teachers. We are hoping that many of our parents will consider coming out to these meetings. Our School Council will also be looking for classroom representatives. Please consider volunteering for this important role! Please let your child’s homeroom teacher know if you are interested in being a classroom representative. We encourage 2 (two) representatives for each class! Our School Council Executives are: Mrs. Teresa Hennessey, Chair Mr. Luc Viel, Treasurer Mrs. Mindy Steinke, Vice Chair Mr. Ray Pryma, Secretary

NOTE: Our first School Council Meeting is on October 3rd at 7:00 PM in the music room.

All parents are welcome!

Parent Concern Protocol

Edmonton Catholic Schools recognizes the freedom of all members of the school community (students, staff, parents and neighbors) to voice their concerns in an appropriate manner to the appropriate school personnel. The principle of “first contact” needs to be followed. This means that the person(s) who have the concern have the responsibility to begin addressing the concern directly with those persons with whom they have the concern before taking their concern elsewhere. If a resolution is not found, please then involve school administration and School Operations Services as needed. All parties will deal with concerns in a manner that is consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Parent Use of Cameras and Video Recorders

Parents love to take photos! If during the year you take photos of your children in school, and other children are in the photographs, please ensure that these pictures are not posted on the internet on sites such as Facebook, MySpace, etc. This violates the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Community Bulletin Board

Our community Bulletin Board is located in the front entrance of the school. Please check this bulletin board for childcare services and upcoming community notices and events. We encourage families from our school who offer daycare/after-school care services to post their information on our Community Bulletin Board. If you wish to post any material check with the office first.

Milk Program

The Bishop Greschuk Milk Program will be beginning on Monday, September 12th. We are selling milk cards at the office. Please send money with your child and their teacher will forward it to the office.

Healthy Hunger Lunches

The parents of SAC are excited to continue the hot lunch program for our children. This program is not being used as a fundraiser, it is only to help make our lives a little less hectic! We will be using a company called Healthy Hunger. This lunch program allows parents to order and pay on-line. You first need to register your children at www.HealthyHunger.ca. The restaurants and dates for the lunches will be announced at a later date.

Peanut/Nut Safe Zone

We are continuing to make every effort to create a safe and caring environment for all our students at Bishop Greschuk School. We have a number of children with life-threatening allergies. We are again asking that you refrain from sending ANY peanut, peanut butter or nut products in your child’s lunch and snacks. Please try to understand that even if a peanut product is placed on a desk, all it would require for a child with allergies is to touch the desk and come into contact with the oils, to bring on a life-threatening allergic reaction. In some cases, within two minutes of any contact with peanut products the reaction could be fatal for a child. Thank you for your consideration and compassion. Let’s work together to make our school a safe environment for all students.

Boston Pizza - Operation Education

For several years, Bishop Greschuk School and Boston Pizza Namao have partnered in Operation Education. Boston Pizza has developed the Operation Education program as a co-operative fund raising venture between Boston Pizza and local schools. It is an easy and effective fund raising program where Bishop Greschuk School will receive a 5% rebate on all items purchased at Boston Pizza every month, for an entire year. When you visit Boston Pizza Namao, please have them stamp your receipt and then have your child bring it to the office at Bishop Greschuk School. Easy, fun and profitable for our school. Thank you in advance!

Kindergarten Immunization

Immunizations protect your child from serious childhood diseases. Diseases spread more easily when children are together in a group. Ensure your child is protected from vaccine preventable diseases by having his/her immunizations up to date. Kindergarten immunizations are given at the Public Health Centers. After their 4th birthday most children should have:

A booster dose of DTaP-IPV (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and polio) vaccine,

A second dose of MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine,

A Chickenpox vaccine if they have not had chickenpox vaccine or diseases before.

If immunization is needed, call your local Public Health Centre for an appointment. If you have any questions, please call Capital Health LINK at 780-408-LINK (5465).

YELLOW SCHOOL BUS INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

SCHOOL START-UP – SEPTEMBER 2016

In June 2016, a Joint Safety Committee was formed with representatives from Edmonton school jurisdictions and con-tracted yellow bus carriers. The purpose of the committee is to meet bi-annually to discuss yellow school bus safety with all stakeholders involved with yellow school bus transportation in Edmonton. The following new safety measures will be implemented on all Edmonton Catholic Schools yellow bus routes in September 2016:

Code RED – All carriers have agreed to implement a code red system that requires dispatch to answer a Code RED call from a bus driver as a priority. Code RED is defined as, “any time a situation arises and a driver’s ability to safely drive is compromised.”

Oversize Items – Oversize items on a school bus can become a safety hazard if the bus has to stop suddenly or is involved in a collision. To ensure student safety, the district will be implementing the following guidelines:

Maximum size limit for large items: 13” wide x 13” deep x 30” high or 33cm wide x 33cm deep x 76cm high

Guidelines:

The item must be in a backpack, closed bag or carrying case.

The item must fit on the child’s lap or between their legs on the floor of the school bus.

Items placed on the floor must not extend past the child’s chest area.

Items cannot block aisles or emergency exits.

Notices – Information on oversize items will be on large easy-to-read stickers clearly displayed on yellow school buses beginning September 2016. Bus drivers will also retain a copy of these guidelines on the bus and the information has been posted on the district website.

Drivers have been instructed that they cannot refuse transportation to a child even if the child shows up at the bus stop with an oversize item that exceeds the maximum limits. In this situation, drivers will stow the item as safely as possible. Once the bus arrives at the school, the driver will advise the school supervisor that the stu-dent has an oversize item and remind the school that the driver will not allow the oversize item back on the bus. The school must make arrangements with parents to transport the oversize item.

Driver Expectations – Edmonton Catholic Schools’ transportation staff attended orientation sessions for yellow bus drivers where they presented information on these new guidelines as well as outlined driver expectations. Driver expectations include:

Develop seating plans and assign students to specific seats.

Follow the route as designed - no courtesy stops.

Complete child check to ensure that children are not left sleeping on the bus, and

A reminder that kindergarten and grade 1 students are to be met at their stop by a parent or guardian.

Camera Surveillance Equipment

Edmonton Catholic Schools operates video surveillance equipment in approximately 45% of our bus routes. The equipment will be assigned to longer bus routes and bus routes that have had a history of issues. If, at any time throughout the year, principals want a particular bus route to have video surveillance equipment, they may con-tact Transportation Services and arrangements can be made to have the video surveillance equipment available for that route.

Our plan is to add new video surveillance equipment to our buses every year so that this equipment will be on the entire fleet of buses assigned to Edmonton Catholic Schools.

Seven Habits of Highly Effective Students

The following advice is from a student, Isaac Calon and was printed in the Summer 2004 edition of the Learning Team. Some quotes from the article: “It may not be the toughest situation a person will face in life, but being a student is challenging.” “Make no mistake — students go to school to learn.” “Grades matter! A student will likely need a mark to go where he or she wants to go.” “Although I do not always earn the highest grades, I know that the following suggestions will help others to reach their potential inside and outside the classroom.” 1. Be punctual~Arrive to class on time. Teachers dislike interruptions because students

shift their focus to the student arriving late. Punctuality also applies to handing in assignments on time.

2. Ask questions~Although students hear this in every class, few students actually heed this advice. Just remember, it’s likely other students have similar questions. Get in the habit of

3. asking questions about the topic and related topics. 4. Review material everyday~ This is one of the most constructive habits that a student can

adopt because reviewing material reduces the pressure of testing. Simply reviewing material covered every day is beneficial.

5. Rest and eat~Everyone needs a good night's sleep and to eat properly every day. Get adequate rest on a regular basis. Well rested and well fed students have less trouble getting out of bed in the morning, absorbing material and staying awake in class.

6. Organization~Use your agenda book as an organizer. Name your work with the date and a title.

7. Priorities~Now here’s a challenge. This calls on students to review what is due and gauge how much time will be needed to get the work done. It’s wise to plan ahead. Students who have plans for the weekend should do extra work during the week. Students need to look at the big picture.

8. Developing a positive attitude~There is no one way to have a good attitude. Students don’t need to be all smiles and good cheer, nor do they have to like all their teachers and classmates, but they need to respect each other. Keep an open mind.

Dear School Parents, Staff and Volunteers:

PROTECTION AGAINST MEASLES - IMMUNIZATION REMINDER FOR SCHOOL PARENTS, STAFF

AND VOLUNTEERS

Measles is an illness that can sometimes cause severe health problems, and occasionally death. It can be prevented by measles immunization. A school exposure occurs when a person with measles is present at a school. Persons who attend, work or volunteer at that school are at risk of getting measles. When there is a

school measles exposure:

1. Public Health will check all students, staff and volunteers for protection against measles.

2. Students, staff and volunteers who do not have protection against measles may be excluded, meaning they are not allowed to attend, work or volunteer at school, until the risk for infection is

over.

Two doses of measles vaccine given before a school measles exposure provides protection against

measles and avoids possible exclusion.

Please ensure your local Public Health Centre has a record of immunizations which may have been given previously in different locations in Alberta, Canada, or other countries, translated if necessary. To receive measles vaccine or check immunization records, please contact an Alberta Health Services Public Health Centre. For more information on measles immunization, please go to immunizealberta.ca. For more Information on measles, protection, vaccine schedule, exclusion, and Public Health Centres, please see other side.

Thank you for your attention and help in this important matter.

Sincerely,
