Children prayer vigil beginning on September 13, 2014, and
continuing through Children's Sabbath, in both worship ser-
vices. You can learn more about the Light a Candle for Chil-

Youthful Information . . . . . . . . Ah, school! The smell of new backpacks, the hissing sound of school-buses all over town, the overwhelming
mixture of excitement at seeing old friends, sadness at the end of summer days, and dread at the workload soon to
come that permeates the air! Once again, the school year is upon us. And, as such, so is a new year of Youth Group!
We would like to formally welcome all new third-graders to Youth Group this year – we hope you’re ready to have
a blast! This month, the Youth will continue meeting on Wednesday nights with a meal at 6pm and a game and bi-
ble study to follow. For those older Youth who would instead like to participate in our Spiritual Gift small groups
on Wednesday nights, they are welcome (and encouraged) to do so! In addition, on Saturday, September 26th, the
Youth will be traveling to Carowinds for the day – we will meet at the church at 8:30am and return close to 5:30pm.
Then, the following Saturday (October 3rd), we will be helping out at the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission wrapping
Christmas gifts for their clients from 9am-12pm. If you would like any additional information on any of the above
events, or if you are not on the Youth email list and would like to be, please email Chris Rinker at
. . . . . . . . From the desk of Chris Rinker.
“Faith Seeking Understanding”. . . . Happy September to you all!
As I write these words on a beautiful Wednesday morning, there is a small hint of a chill in the air and although it is
still technically summer, it seems that perhaps fall is on its way to the Piedmont.
In my 14 months of living here in Winston-Salem, one of the great joys I have discovered is that there are indeed four
distinct seasons in the year. (Growing up in West Texas there were only two seasons; “hot” and “cold.”) And although
it is an easy thing to overlook, there is a wonderful rhythmic aspect of the changes of season. I think of the four sea-
sons, fall is my favorite. The weather is cooler but not quite freezing cold. And the colors of fall, with leaves of green
turning red and gold, are just magnificent! More than anything however, I love the rhythm of fall, it becomes a bit
more stable, less frantic perhaps, as kids return back to school, vacations conclude, football begins, and warm foods
like soup become more the norm.
Indeed the more I live, the more I am convinced that attention must be given to the rhythms of life, the rhythms that
are God-given for us all to live into.
As we all settle into the rhythm of this fall in our homes and daily living, as we take walks in the cool mornings of this
season and enjoy the falling of leaves, I encourage you all to pay attention to where faith and our community of faith
are within your own life. Where is God to be found in the rhythm of your life? Where is God to be seen and shared
within our life as a community of faith? I encourage you to think about these things as summer turns to fall and to
come and be a part of God’s fellowship here at First Christian Church through Sunday worship.
Additionally, I encourage you to please be a part of our five-week spiritual gifts small groups that will be forming in
the next two weeks, beginning with a potluck supper on Wednesday, September 2nd at 6pm. As individuals, small
groups, and as an entire congregation, we will be exploring how God has given to each of us certain gifts or, to be
more theologically correct, “manifestations of the Spirit,” for the common good and the furtherance of God’s com-
monwealth. The reason we as a congregation are focusing our attention on these gifts of the spirit is actually quite
practical. Perhaps some may be wondering what gifts God has given to you. Consider this a welcome opportunity to
find out. Indeed, I think as a community of faith, we are asking that question; What gifts and graces, unique manifesta-
tions of God’s Spirit, have been given to First Christian Church, Winston-Salem?
Let us all be in prayer about these and other things and I hope you will all prayerfully consider being a part of the
process of discovering your gifts of the Spirit as well as the Spiritual gifts of our community of faith beginning with
our potluck fellowship dinner on Wednesday evening, September 2nd at 6pm in Taylor Hall.
See you in Church, Ryan
Halloween is almost around the corner...so pencil in Friday October 30th. . . . . .
Trunk R Treat! 6 to 6:30 dinner and 6:30 to 7:30treating. More information will
follow. Gina Pruitt - Trunk r Treat coordinator.

Scholarship Presentation
On Sunday, July 19th, Kyle Presley was presented with the Grace
Wall-Wilson Scholarship. Presenting this scholarship is Ken Wil-
son and Barbara Wilson Westerhouse. The Grace Walls Wilson
Memorial Fund was established in 2000 for music/and or art stu-
dents to keep alive the memory of a gracious lady who made music
and art a pursuit of her everyday life. Some of you may remember
Mrs. Wilson. If there are any questions regarding this fund please
come by the church office or give us a call.
“Hope— is expectation and desire for certain things to happen”!
I have to share! Late afternoon, on Monday, First Christian Church
appeared to be the pot at the end of the rainbow. I will keep this
photo with me as a remembrances of the wonderful years God
blessed me with by being a part of this church family. We have lost
so many of our church family these past few years but still have so
much to offer. Just as the rainbow is a symbol of hope, “First Chris-
tian Church Disciples of Christ”, offers hope and so much more to
each of us.
In our pastors article, in this Insight, he reflects one of the thoughts
I had when viewing this rainbow. His words are, “I encourage you
all to pay attention to where faith and our community of faith are
within your own life….”
Let’s reach out and share what we have with others. Thanks for a
great article Ryan
I too hope that you will all come take part in the upcoming Spiri-
tual Gifts Group Discussion.
Love in Christ, Sharry
