Hi everyone,

So Roche UK have developed an amazing specific breast cancer treatment in the form of a drug called Kadcyla. A long awaited breakthrough in the treatment of one of the worlds most terrible diseases. It must be a great feeling for them to be holding in their grasp the power to help prolong the life of a sufferer and fellow member of mankind. Sadly Roche UK don’t see it that way. They see it more of a financial tool than a humani-tarian one. Priced at £90.000 per year treat-ment cost per patient it is £40.000 per year above the government’s regulatory board (NICE) who set the annual treatment cost at a maximum of £50.000. Per patient. Jennifer Cozzone, head of health economics and pricing at Roche stated “We believe that Kadcyla’s price reflects the value it brings to patients particularly with this very important disease” . So it is all about the money then. I’m not naive enough to wave away the vast investment cost of research and develop-ment that Roche UK have committed to but lets look seriously at the maths. Each of us has a 1 in 3 chance of cancer. In woman it is highly likely to manifest as breast cancer. That’s about a 1 in 6 chance overall. Given the population, for Roche UK to go from R&D into pure profit will not take too long I fear. Lets face it, when Pfizer can offer Astra Zenica 118 Billion in a takeover bid and AZ walk away from the deal it is not hard to see the unimaginable volume of money, in terms most of us cannot even begin to get our head around, that is being made by pharmaceutical company’s the world over. Sadly R&D into new treatments and drugs has nothing whatsoever to do with making the world a better place.
