Newcastle United Foundation Help TyneMet Kick off the New Academic Year Newcastle United Foundation joined TyneMet College’s North East Sports Academy (NESA) Students and Coaches for a day of competitive sport at Complete Football in Gosforth Park. First and second year students on TyneMet’s Level 3 Football Excellence Programme (delivered in partnership with Complete Football), took part in the day’s activities.

TyneMet College and Newcastle United Foundation have worked in partnership since September 2011. TyneMet Rugby Starts With a Bang TyneMet Rugby started the year with a bang as they went to Winlaton Rugby Club for a Rugby League Tournament. Playing Astley High School, Gateshead College and St John’s was always going to be a tough ask for a young team playing a version of the sport they hadn’t really come into contact with previously. In dreary conditions that made playing wide open fast rugby nearly impossible TyneMet, at first, struggled to come to terms with laws of the game they had previously only seen on TV. Despite this the team showed some glimpses of a superb attack that would continue to be built upon through out the afternoon. Individual efforts from Anthony Jordan and Adam Heddon, who acted like one man battering rams all afternoon, gave TyneMet its first tries of the new season and soon had other players working hard to emulate their performances. New recruits Dan Laidman and Jordan Farnworth began exhibiting superb strength and forward running with the ball in hand. Coach Jack Lambert said after the tournament, “ This really was a learning curve for the team today. They were playing a version of the game they were perhaps unused to and I think that told. However today was about giving me the chance to see what our new players are about and I purposely through them in the deep end. The players did not disappoint! Although defensively we were a little naïve at times our attacking play was fantastic to watch and I know we can build on the performances today.”

Cole Transfers to Phoenix From TyneMet TyneMet College sport student Cole Dixon, 18, from Newcastle, who studied on the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport has been awarded a place on a soccer programme to study on an Associate Degree in Physical Health and Fitness at Scottsdale Community College in Phoenix, Arizona, one of the top junior colleges of its kind in the USA. Cole won his scholarship on a recommendation from Pass4Soccer who work in association with the North East Sports Academy (NESA) at TyneMet College. NESA membership is free to students studying on full time courses at TyneMet and professional coaches and organisations such as Pass4Soccer support students to continue to develop individual training programmes that work around a student's academic timetable. Cole said, “I am really excited about going to study in the USA, my passion is to play football which I continued to do when I came to TyneMet through the North East Sports Academy. I know that I will have to study hard but I am prepared to do that to successfully achieve my 2 year programme and then move on to study for my Major Degree in Physical Health and Fitness.” Pass4Soccer was established in 2003 with the aim of setting up an organisation to educate coaches, teachers, players and parents about scholarships in the USA and to help those players who demonstrate a genuine desire to take up higher education and win a sport scholarship. The organisation works in association with NESA and is based at TyneMet College. Mark McCutcheon, Head of NESA, said: “I am delighted that Cole has been awarded this scholarship. Through NESA we strive to support and develop our students sporting ambitions and career aspirations. We have specialist coaches in many sporting disciplines and we develop individual training programmes that can be fitted into a student’s academic timetable. Cole is one of the many successful students that we have supported this year, each success is a testament to the high quality of coaching delivered by the professional and dedicated NESA team at TyneMet”.

Shooting Clinic

On Wednesday 11th July Tyne Metropolitan College invited Coach Bob Martin to lead a shooting and individual skills clinic with its academy members past & present. With the Tyne Met CRC going through some essential maintenance, our friends at Churchill Community College kindly hosted the clinic. 14 players, compromising from the current Tyne Met Titans squad and graduates from previous years attended the clinic hoping to learn from one of the best coaches in the country.

Coach Bob Martin graduated from Defiance University in Ohio and played in many top leagues all over Europe. He ended up playing in the BBL for many years, where he was twice the top scorer in the country. Bob still holds three point shooting records to this day and has firmly cemented his place as being one of the best shooters ever to play the game in the UK. He smoothly made the transition over to coaching and has won at every level he has ever coached at. Titans Head Coach Marc Steutel was lucky enough to play for Bob at the East Durham Basketball Academy where they collectively won 3 national championships.

Tyne Met Players were put through a super intense and typically Coach Martin workout for three hours. Players were shown the importance of how to work out correctly as an individual, the correct shooting technique and a focus on performing individual dribble moves at game speed. Coach Martin was very impressed with the Titans work ethic on the day. He commented “this was an absolute pleasure being able to coach these guys today. They were a great reflection on their coach in terms of the way they listened, learned and most importantly worked very, very hard. I hope I am able to come up again and work with the guys!” Coach Steutel was also upbeat “having Coach Martin come up and work out with these players really was an honour. I feel I owe a lot of my own coaching philosophy to him and for Tyne Met players to see him first hand was tremendous. I am positive that this will have a lasting impression on these players”.

Current Titan player Alan Slasor commented “Today was amazing. Coach Martin really put us through our paces and I learnt so much. Really was inspirational” Graduated starting point guard Vlad Bodeaca said after the session “Coach Steutel had always told us about the session he used to be put through with Coach Martin, to actually go through one myself was amazing. I really got so much out of the session and hope I get to go through this again at some point! I am buzzing”

Mixed Martial Arts has

a Strong Start to the

New Academic Year TyneMet College offers various Enrichment activities to students with the aim of increasing their involvement in physical exercise

This year more than ever before students have shown a keen interest in Mixed Martial Arts, which is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing sports in the UK.

Mixed martial arts is a full contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground, from a variety of other combat sports. The roots of modern mixed martial arts can be traced back to the ancient Olympics where one of the earliest documented systems of codified full range unarmed combat was utilized in the sport of Pankration.

At TyneMet this year Mixed Martial Arts comprises various disciplines like Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Boxing and Kick Boxing. It has been great to see such an interest from both male and female students who are keen to learn these self defence techniques. Although some students have a previous experience in certain disciplines like boxing and Judo there a many who have just decided to get involved.

The enrichment session caters for all abilities, novice through to some of our high level judokas. The sessions are devised to develop fitness, teach self-defence, build self-esteem and develop confidence. The sessions are run by our own TyneMet Student Tyrone Elliott, who has been a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA since he was just 4 years old. It is great to have someone with his knowledge and skills leading the classes.

Tyrone will be competing in the up and coming European championships for his belt and weight class, it will be the first time Tyrone will have competed as a purple belt so we all wish him the best at the club.

Flying Start for NESA Women Footballers So far 2012 has inspired people all over the world to take part in sport. The Women’s Football Development Centre at Tyne Met College has seen a significant increase in the number of girls wanting to get on the field and represent Tyne Met College. With this in mind, the girls have been training very hard in order to proceed with what we hope is a prosperous season, and what a flying start they have had. The WFDC played Hartlepool Sixth Form in the College Cup last week and managed to gain a 6-0 victory. The game got off to a great start with Tyne Met holding the majority of possession and creating many goal scoring chances. Jasmine Trundley and Ellen Martin were linking up well on the right flank and managed to deliver a pin point cross to Rebecca Hansen who finally managed to put the ball in the back of the net just before the half time whistle. Tyne Met stepped back onto the pitch with a positive attitude and confidence in their system and started to play some smart football against hard working opponents. Sarah McAlpine and Megan McKenzie often drove through the midfield and played in some great balls for Laura Henderson to get on the end of. It wasn’t long until Tyne Met were taking their chances and scoring for fun, with more goals coming from; Sarah McAlpine, Danielle Trewick and Laura Henderson. Hartlepool did not create many chances due to a strong back four and there were often times when Centre Half Becky Wilson and Captain Natalie Atkinson would not allow them through. On one occasion, Hartlepool played a ball over the top but Tyne Mets keeper, Charly Tasker, was on top form to save the ball and play out from the back. Goalscorers: Rebecca Hansen (2) Laura Henderson (2) Danielle Trewick & Sarah McAlpine. Head Coach Natalie Henderson said “The girls were terrific today. We have been working hard in training and really concentrating on playing with quality. Today has proved that we have a great bunch of hard working girls with fantastic ability and this gives us hope for a successful season”. The Women’s Football Development Centre currently has a First Team and a Development Team and is therefore catering for all abilities. If you are interested please contact: [email protected].

TyneMet Perform at the 10’s

The TyneMet rugby team made the long journey to Acklam for the first of many RFU 10’s Tournaments this year. With the weather perfect for attacking, free flowing Rugby TyneMet players did not disappoint! To shake the bus ride out of their legs TyneMet played Hartlepool FE in their first Rugby Union game of the new season and things got off with a superb try from Ryan Yellop. After build up play by Adam Heddon breaking numerous tackles to somehow keep moving forward it was set up for Ryan on a plate and he ran under the posts to score one of the easiest tries of his career. After scoring another try TyneMet seemed in control of the game, however sloppy defending then allowed Hartlepool back into it as the game was tied late in the second half. However Kyle Stocks, only playing because there was no football game, then appeared on the right wing and put his body on the line to score the winning try 1 minute from the end of the match. Unfortunately a shoulder injury sustained whilst scoring the match winning try curtailed his afternoon but what a way to get injured! With no rest between matches TyneMet were straight back onto the pitch to play Priory. Fatigue had begun to set in by this point and despite some superb tackles from Keiran Lydell the TyneMet defence were huffing and puffing and let Priory take an early lead. In the second half TyneMet kept possession an d showed what a threat they are with ball in hand as Ryan Brooke scored 2 of 4 tries in a 10 minute period. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough to catch up after an abysmal first half. All afternoon the TyneMet front row had been dominant in the scrum, making other sides rue every knock on. The only other team to show this kind of dominance on the day was East Durham. The last game of the day saw a titanic battle between the two. East Durham may have won the game but the TyneMet pack won bragging rights as they demolished the scrum forcing East Durham into uncontested scrums. Coach Jack Lambert had this to say at the end of the day, “ Against the two teams we will be playing league games against , Hartlepool FE and Priory, we were very competitive with which gives me a lot of faith that this year can be successful for TyneMet Rugby. Our front row and attack was fantastic today and a real credit to the players who showed some superb skills. Defensively we let ourselves down and that is something we will be looking to put right in training.”
