HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUB, HOW DO YOU FEEL?

Welcome back! I hope that you had an enjoyable summer break and are ready to start school.

Even if you’re not, you must be ecstatic to be sorted into committees and get the new year going.

Our first general meeting of the school year is coming up on October 2nd in the southwest side of

the Cafeteria, during 10th period. Be there! Bring your peers, friends, and anyone interested in join-

ing Key Club. Spread the word and share the membership form link. It will be up on our website

(thetechkey.com) until the close of the application process, which is slated for October 20th. Dues

will be collected only on October 15th, 16th, 18th, and 19th in the SGO store during all lunch peri-

ods. You can also pick up your Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF box then as well. Read more about the

campaign on page 18!

Keep sending me articles and images! It makes me happy to see new emails in my inboxes after an

event without having me badger you for them. You can e-mail me at [email protected] and

send pictures to [email protected].

Thank you for reading!

Yours in the spirit of service,

Sharon Cai

2ND ANNUAL K-FAMILY PICNIC

With 4 branches of Kiwanis, 11 Circle K clubs, 14 Key Clubs, and 1 Build-

ers’ Club in attendance—totaling about 120 members—we were able

to raise $381 for the Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation. Held at

Cunningham Park, K-Family attendees convened for a day full of food,

fun, and games. It provided a wonderful opportunity to network with

different clubs in New York and New Jersey and to get together in sup-

port of a worthy cause.

The 2nd annual K-Family Picnic was a great bonding experi-

ence. I was enthusiastic that the event would be held in

Queens, but I ended up lost for about an hour. Despite ini-

tial complications, going to the event was definitely worth

it. There was a sufficient supply of food and drink accom-

modating the various activities played. It was nice to see a

K-Family join together and really enjoy each other’s com-

pany. I thought the picnic a success and am looking for-

ward to the 3rd Annual K-Family Picnic!

— Tina Gao

Everyone had a lot of fun meeting the different Key Clubbers

from New York City and getting to know each other. We

played tons of games such as football, tag, and monkey in

the middle. Kelly (the event coordinator) had also arranged

an icebreaker/game called captain's coming. Our very own

president, Han-Chang Kim, came close to winning but ended

up in second place. Our Key Club got to talk to several Circle

K members and learn about what they do. I think is great how

a Key Clubber can continue his/her passion for helping others

after high school through Circle K and later on in the Kiwanis

foundation. Towards the end, HC called to make a human

pyramid which I thought was a comical disaster. The event

was definitely a success. It is safe to say WE FELT MAD GOOD

AND WHAT?!?!

ST. NICHOLAS BLOCK PARTY

On September 9th, Brooklyn Tech Key Clubbers gathered to help out St. Nicholas Cathedral Church

with a wonderful block party. We helped them set up by carrying tables, chairs, and other heavy ob-

jects from the basement up onto the sidewalk. Richard and I spent most of the day running downstairs

and upstairs because we didn't like giving out fliers. It was so awesome to see and help out with the

inner makings of a festival/block party. St. Nicholas Cathedral Church was generous enough to give us

tickets to get food after the morning shift. The Mediterranean food was really delicious and I'm now

craving their chicken kebabs again! After our shifts were over, HC volunteered to sit in the dunk tank,

and Gurjot paid for the whole group to get a chance to throw balls at the target. None of the Key

Clubbers got HC on their first or second attempts, but it was still extremely hilarious to watch everyone

fail at their throws. Eventually, another kid was able to dunk our President, prompting all of us to cheer

and clap loudly. It was a really great experience and now I feel hungry after typing all this!

— Sandy Mui

St. Nicolas Cathedral held their annual block party to raise funds for the church and provide the

neighborhood with some festivity on September 9th. Residents on the street set up tables to sell knick-

knacks, to fundraise for causes, and to do arts and crafts. Over 20 Key Clubbers came to help out (not

all made it into the group picture though). Many came early to set up tables, unpack supplies, and

other preparation duties. Later on volunteers helped supervise the different activity stands and were

able to enjoy the party once their shifts were up. If you couldn’t go, take a look at what you missed!

3RD ANNUAL CONEY ISLAND BEACH CLEAN-UP

This year’s Coney Island Beach Clean-Up, planned by secretary

Tiffany and sponsored by New York Aquarium, occurred on Sep-

tember 16. Over 50 Key Clubbers from division 9, along with doz-

ens of other volunteer groups and individuals, convened at

Ocean Parkway on the boardwalk to receive instructions for their

day’s work. Volunteers spent two hours picking up miscellaneous

objects and logging them on a sheet for research. Afterward everyone was treated to free admis-

sion to the aquarium. To learn more about what NY Aquarium has to offer and other volunteer op-

portunities, visit http://www.nyaquarium.com/.

SEPTEMBER 16, 2012

Even though it was already September and a little late for a trip to the beach, the weather turned out to be

perfect and still at an ideal temperature. I was amazed by the huge turnout from division 9 and other volunteer

groups. We were given instructions, separated into groups, and told to pick up and log all trash we found. At first

I was reluctant to pick up cigarette butts and what not, but once I let go of my initial fears, time started to pass

by really quickly. I bonded with my group mates while making the beach cleaner. Afterward, we were all given

free admission to the NY Aquarium, which was really generous of the organization. I can’t think of a better way

to launch the new school year than with our annual Coney Island Beach Clean-Up.

DIVISION 9 & 10 BOWLING FUNDRAISER

Lieutenant Governors Helen and Michelle, from division 9 and 10 re-

spectively, collaborated to make a joint-division bowling fundraiser

at Maple Lanes possible. With an attendance of over 50 Key Club-

bers, we were able to raise $409 for ELIMINATE Project and Avon’s

Brest Cancer Walk. Click to learn more about what the ELIMINATE

project is. In addition, check out what Avon’s Breast Cancer Walk is

KIWANIS PEANUT DAY

On September 22nd, Division 9 Key Clubbers gathered for

Kiwanis Peanut Day. I got to the event location waaaay

too early because I thought I would get lost and I didn't,

and I was really glad when Key Clubbers finally showed up.

It was extremely dangerous to stand in the middle of the

road asking for donations but still very fun! It was a little em-

barrassing when cars passed by and the drivers completely

ignored me or don't donate, but I was still able to receive

multiple cans of donations in the end. Although it seems

like an easy task to give out a few of the peanut bags in

exchange for an unspecified donation, it really isn't. For

me, it took between one and two hours just to give out six

peanut bags. I was relieved when the event was over be-

cause I think I’m an unsociable person, but this event

helped me step out of my comfort zone a bit. I just might

attend another Peanut Day event in future.

Key Clubbers had a busy end-of-September with the

Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Neighborhood Clean-Up,

and JRDF Walk. Assemblyman William Colton wrapped

up his “Speak Up and Clean Up” campaign with one

last event in Bensonhurst on September 23. Kudos to

those who attended both Sept 23 events! JDRF Walk

was held the following weekend on September 30.

LETTER FROM DIVISION SECRETARY

16 CARING—OUR WAY OF LIFE

Hey Brooklyn Tech Key Club! How do you feel?!

My name is Stephanie Cherng and I will be serving as your division secretary for the 2012-2013 ser-

vice year. As your secretary I am responsible for recording minutes during divisional meetings and

training conferences. I also assist your lieutenant governor Helen Wong in planning various divi-

sional events and hold fundraisers for different causes and charities. We have approximately 950

members in our division and it continues to increase every year. It is of our best interest to reach

out to every single one of you and provide everyone with a rewarding Key Club experience.

With that said, it is important to follow division and

club updates either through the internet or through

meetings. Together, we can all create a successful

service year and be the best division we can be.

Coming out to club and divisional events and meet-

ings is one step closer to creating a unified division.

As you can tell the number of members to our divi-

sion board is overwhelming. And because of that,

your trusted board and committee have committed

themselves to serve you throughout your Key Club

experience. Remember, no obstacles are too big to

tackle when it comes to numbers. The larger we are

the greater the outcome and results we can ac-

complish in every task we do. The ancient philoso-

pher Lao Tzu once said, “A journey of a thousand

miles begins with a single step.”

I hope to hear from you guys and see all your beau-

tiful faces in the many future endeavors and events

to come! GO DIVISION 9!

Yours In Service,

Stephanie Cherng

What does it mean to be “Key Clubber of the Month?”

Each month, we award a specific Key Clubber(s) who has made the most

impact on our club for that month. To receive this award, a Key Clubber

must not only attend most events that month but must also actively partici-

pate and contribute to Key Club and their community. We want to a Key

Clubber who is fit to represent Brooklyn Tech and serve as a role model to

others. For the month of September, this honor goes to …..

up for an annual trick-or-treat fundraising campaign with their signature orange

out with your boxes. Make your box into something special. You can pick one up in the SGO store on either October 15th, 16th, 18th, or 19th when you pay your mem-

bership dues. We can’t wait to see them!

The executive board is awarding +5 points to their favorite designs and you can

submit pictures of your design to UNICEF for a chance to get it on next year’s 2013

limited edition boxes. All members participating in the fundraising campaign will re-

ceive +1pt for every $1 raised, maximum +20 points given. However, the top fund-

raiser will receive an additional +10 points. All proceeds will go to the Eliminate Pro-
