Smoldering shades of red carried out themes of lava and volca-
no at Celebrating Couture 2012.The heat of designer Monique
Lhuillier's fall collection was on the runway for all to see as the
models strutted and flashed their haute attitudes. Pacing was
brisk and production values were big-time smart. Lhuillier
drew inspiration for her collection from the Year of the Dragon
theme, so results were dramatic, highly fitting for an event that
benefits The Old Globe, San Diego's premiere theatre organi-
zation. Once again, the Globe Guilders showed their fashion
savvy in bringing to life a terrific
show which was presented by
Neiman Marcus and the Hilton San
Diego Bayfront.
Beautifully attired women attend-
ed Celebrating Couture 2012.
Among them were Rosemary
Pierce, Cristull Hasson, Bonnie
Wright, Diana Cavagnaro, Karen
Cohn, Sheryl White, Valerie
Cooper, Esther Rodriguez, Shirley
Hinkley, and so many more. Ap-
preciating and cheering in the
audience of 570 guests were
Chrissy Roberts, Fashion Show
Chair, Co-Chairs Julie Fought and
Jeannie Haddox, Pat Whalen, Hon-
orary Chair, Liz Helming, Globe
Guilders President, and Jo Ann
Kilty, last year's Honorary Chair.
Some dapper men, in addition to
women, were guests. Spotted in
the crowd were Michael Murphy, Globe Managing Director, Todd Schultz, Globe
Development Director, and Vincent Andrunas.
The first Globe Guilders Fashion Show in 1991, "Oscar in Autumn," featured cou-
ture garments of the gifted Oscar de la Renta. The Guilder annual parade of fash-
ion has become something of a tradition in San Diego. Pictures start on page 6.

News From Around The Old Globe
Thank You from The Old Globe Dear Globe Guilders,
Congratulations to each of you for another wonderfully successful Fashion Show! The energy and excitement in the air at the Hilton was amazing as guests mingled, bid on wonderful auction items and eagerly anticipated the gor-geous designs they were about to see on the runway. The luncheon was delicious, the show was fantastic and all of the guests left Celebrat-ing Couture with smiles on
their faces (and Globe bags in their hands!).
This year’s Fashion Show is just one more example of why we are so fortunate to have the Guilders as part of the Globe family. Your com-mitment to the Globe and hours of volunteering, organ-izing and serving as ambas-sadors to the Theatre, among so many other things, is phe-nomenal, and we appreciate your love and support of great theater.
I hope that you enjoy the rest of your summer, and I look forward to seeing you at the Globe as we begin our excit-ing 2012/13 Season with Allegiance - A New American Musical, and Good People.
Take care, and I’ll see you at the show!
Thank you,
Michael G. Murphy

ALLEGIANCE:
A SAN DIEGO PERSPECTIVE
A SPECIAL MUSEUM EXHIBITION
The Old Globe and the Japanese Amer-
ican Historical Society of San Diego
present a museum exhibition through-
out the run of Allegiance about the his-
tory of Japanese Americans who lived
in San Diego prior to World War II and
their removal to the internment camps.
The exhibition contains photographs,
artifacts and materials about the intern-
ment and how it affected San Diego
County and its citizens. Located in the
Museum of Man Annex directly adja-
cent to The Old Globe, the exhibition
is free to the public and is open two
hours prior to each performance.

A LOBBY ART INSTALLATION BY
ARTIST WENDY MARUYAMA
Wendy Maruyama’s large-scale
sculptural installation “The Tag Pro-
ject” features groupings of ID tags
resembling those worn by Japanese
Americans as they were sent to the
internment camps. Approximately 11
feet tall and weighing more than 100
pounds, each grouping contains
enough tags to represent every per-
son in one of the 10 U.S. internment
camps.

2012 Globe Gala A Night in Tuscany
The Old Globe’s 2012 Globe Gala, held on Saturday, July 28, was a
beautiful “Night in Tuscany.” The Gala was co-chaired by Board Mem-
bers Pam Cesak, Jo Ann Kilty and Vicki Zeiger, who all looked stunning
in their dresses. Many individuals contributed to the night’s success,
including lead underwriters Audrey Geisel, Darlene Shiley and Conrad
Prebys and Debra Turner, and all attendees enjoyed the festivities
while raising funds for the Globe’s artistic and education programs. The
night included a lovely reception and silent auction in Alcazar Garden,
a live auction and special concert performance by Tony Award winner
Lea Salonga, one of the stars of the Globe’s upcoming production of Al-
legiance – A New American Musical, and, of course, dinner and danc-
ing under the stars!
Darlene Davies Appointed Official Historian
For The Old Globe Theatre
My bursting news is that I'm now the official Old Globe Historian. This title is entirely
due to the thoughtfulness of The Old Globe staff and Board of Directors, in particular
Michael Murphy and Hal Fuson. My original and simple wish was to compile Globe
history scrapbooks (which I do anyway) for the Board. To be the Globe's Historian is an unexpected gift
from others.
I came to the Globe when I was eleven years old in 1951, performed main stage when I was twelve, six-
teen and twenty, danced on the green as a teenager, performed with Bill Ball and Victor Buono under
Craig Noel's direction in the Starlight (Ford) Bowl at 21, married the Chairman of the Old Globe Theatre
Board, and served on the Board of Directors for twelve years. Along the way, I've chaired the Globe Gala
and the Globe Guilders Fashion Show, written numerous articles about this theatre, and given many talks.
But, to be The Old Globe Historian is by far the best assignment on this long and enriching journey. I'm so
fortunate, and I know it. This is very meaningful to me because I'm coming home. The thing is, though,
I've never left.

In Appreciation
Globe Guilders and Fashion Group International
Team up Again for Celebrating Couture Did you know that our dear Guilder, Peggy Matthews started the San
Diego chapter of Fashion Group International over 35 years ago?
As a young transplant to San Diego, Peggy saw that our city was fertile
ground to nourish the art of fashion among our fashion-loving la-
dies. Just as Peggy was inspired in San Diego, back in 1928 the found-
ers of FGI International -Eleanor Roosevelt was one of them- conceived
The Fashion Group (c) at an informal luncheon. It became an
organization in 1930, with a place, a purpose, by-laws, officers and
women eager to be members. The guests at that luncheon had three
things in common: Each held a job of consequence in the business of
fashion, each held all the others in high regard and together they held
a belief that fashion needed a forum, a stage, or a force to express and enhance a widening awareness of
the American fashion business and of women’s roles in that business. (Darlene, please add how many
chapters and members they have worldwide)
Fast forward to Celebrating Couture 2012. Our featured couture designer is Monique Lhuillier, a mem-
ber of FGI International. We also find Globe Guilders and the Local FGI chapter drawn together by a
common goal: To inspire a younger generation of fashion design lovers to pursue their careers and
dreams in this art form. In partnership, lead by FGI Regional Director, Julie Fought and supported by FGI
Regional Director-Elect, Jeannie Haddox as Co-Chairs to Chrissy Roberts, FGI sold 19 tickets to the Stand-
ing Room area of the event. This effort made it possible for students and working FGI members to attend
our event and be inspired by this fashion experience.
A sincere THANK YOU from Globe Guilders to the San Diego FGI Board of Direc-
tors for their support. May our partnership continue to succeed and expand in
the years ahead.
In Appreciation To the all the Guilders who did so much for the success of the show, including
putting tables together for Celebrating Couture and especially to Carol Han-
son who brought enough friends to fill two ramp tables of 11 for a total of 22
ramp seats which brought in $5,500 for the Globe Guilders and the Theatre.
Our volunteers go "above and beyond" time and time again!

We had two wonderful Kick Offs in July and one on September 4th with eight Globe Guilders supplying
food and keeping our reputation going by bringing a minimum of 60 deviled eggs to each Kick-Off. It
seems our reputation for deviled eggs extends as far as New York. Twice we have had people tell us they
knew the Guilders were going to give them a welcome reception and they were told about the eggs.
