Fall is officially here; however, with the sunny and warm days it sure is hard to get back to

real work. The Wings of Saskatchewan Conference is just a month away and promises to be

full days of learning and enjoyable evenings of visiting. As always, Marilyn will make sure

everything runs like a clock, and this year Don Macpherson and Kathleen Henderson are busy

making sure we have an interesting program.

Last year in Yorkton, panel discussions proved to be useful to get audience and participant

involvement, so much of our program this year will use the facilitated panel discussion as a

presentation vehicle.

We are very pleased to have leaders in our industry from COPA, CBAA, ATAC, and CAC

taking part in our opening session, “Sizzlers”. This will start us off on a high note and will

provide us with much to discuss for the rest of the conference. And just take a good look at

the other sessions. There’s much to learn, much to think about, and much to talk about.

This year, too, we are very pleased to be honouring two people who spent much of their

careers involved in education and training. Mr. Don Bateman, who graduated from the

College of Engineering in 1956, and who is responsible for developing numerous flight safety

innovations including GPWS, is coming to be inducted into the SAC Hall of Fame. Mr.

Bateman lives in Seattle where he still works for Honeywell. Our other Hall of Fame inductee

is Colonel O.B. Philp, the founder of the Snowbirds. Thursday evening will be a “not to be

missed” aviation event.

The conference is also very pleased to have Dennis Goll, recently retired CEO of Westwind,

agree to be our Friday luncheon speaker. I’m sure all of us will enjoy Dennis’ reflections on

the last 40 years of Saskatchewan aviation.

This year’s conference is also hosting 50 high school students from around the province at an

“aviation careers” event Friday, October 28th. Hopefully, this can become an on-going event

at the Wings of Saskatchewan Conference.

A couple other big good-news items: At long last, the SIAST Commercial Pilot Diploma

Program has received core funding beginning with the present class. And the SIIT AME

program is now running with a class of 2nd year students and a class of 1st year students.

Again wonderful news.

Take care ~~ and see you in Saskatoon Wednesday evening for a round of

“Aviation Trivia”!

September 2011

Saskatoon is once again the host city for the Wings of Saskatchewan Conference and Trade Show, to be held October 26

-28, 2011 at the Saskatoon Inn.

This year, our theme is “Aviation 101” - we are focusing on the education and training involved to keep our aviation

industry safe for all those involved! We are highlighting the new facility at the Saskatoon airport that houses both the

SIAST Commercial Pilot Diploma Program as well as the SIIT AME Training Program, and celebrating the success of

these two programs, bringing more students to Saskatoon and training them to work in the Saskatchewan aviation

industry. We are also bringing in many speakers and presenters to offer training sessions for all areas of aviation, from

the general private pilot to commercial operators to airport managers.

Please see page 3 and 4 for this year’s proposed AGENDA - we are still developing the program so please go to the

website over the next month to view any updates as they happen (www.saskaviationcouncil.ca/conference).

Following the AGENDA, on Page 5, is the Delegate Registration Form. REMINDER: Dead line for the early-bird

registration rate is September 30, 2011—that’s a $50 savings!

We are looking forward again to the TRADE SHOW at this year’s conference. This has always been a successful part of

our conference, and we anticipate many booths again this year.

Each year, the Wings of Saskatchewan has been strongly supported by our SPONSORS. If you would like to participate

that way this year, please check out the SPONSORSHIP INFORMATION located on our website as well!

“There were a lot of casual-

ties,” Needham says. “The Ger-

mans took them to Rennes in

France where they comman-

deered a school to serve as a

hospital. This is where they took

me. They told the French to look

after us, and some French

women (maybe nursing stu-

dents) came during the day and

did some nursing. I was there

for 34 days until (American)

Gen. George Patton came

through with his army and liber-

ated the hospital. “

When Needham, was dis-

charged in October of 1946, he

returned to Saskatchewan and

eventually took over the Wyn-

yard newspaper from his father,

William Charles Needham.

“At one time, my dad owned a

number of community newspa-

pers is Saskatchewan,”

Needham says. “Perhaps he

saw himself as the Conrad

Black of his day. Unfortunately,

he went broke.”

After some years in Saska-

toon, including a stint with the

Star Phoenix, the senior

Needham moved his family to

Wynyard and took over the Wyn-

yard Advance in 1933. During

his three-plus decades as pub-

lisher and editor of the Ad-

vance , Barry Needham re-

ceived more than one award for

his work. The Canadian Com-

munity Newspapers Association

gave him a Silver Quill award for

distinguished service to the

community newspaper profes-

sion. The Saskatchewan Wheat

Pool also awarded him a trophy

for having the best weekly

newspaper in the province.

In addition to his professional

work, Needham always main-

tained

September 2011 Page 6

On August 27, a ceremony

was held in Wynyard to rename

the community airport. It offi-

cially became Wynyard Memo-

rial Airport W.B Needham Field.

The renaming was a tribute to

91-year old Barry Needham,

who is a long time community

leader and one of the people

who spearheaded the establish-

ment of an airport in Wynyard in

the late 1950‟s

“After an air ambulance ex-

perienced difficulty finding a

suitable landing field, I knew an

airport in Wynyard was neces-

sary,” Needham says. It was

officially opened in 1961 and

Needham served as chair of the

airport committee for the next

17 years.

Needham, who spent his pro-

fessional life as editor of the

local Wynyard Advance newspa-

per, had a rich connection with

aviation. He served in the RCAF

from September 1941 to Octo-

ber of 1946 as a pilot and flight

lieutenant with the Canadian

Spitfire Squadron #412 as part

of the second Tactical Air Force

Overseas.

Needham did two hours of

operations and flew four mis-

sions in his Spitfire on D-Day. A

month later, he was shot down

over France by enemy ground

fire. He bailed out with second-

degree burns to his arms, legs

and face.

The Germans who had picked

him up had captured a number

of U.S. paratroopers who had

jumped in France on D-Day. As

they were marching them be-

hind German lines, some U.S.

airplanes spotted the group,

and thinking they were German

soldiers, strafed them.

a close connection to the local

Legion and his #412 Squadron

comrades. In 1994, he was a

delegate to France with the

department of National De-

fence Veterans Affairs for the

50th Anniversary of D-Day.

“While there, I encountered

A.N.S.A, (Normandy Association

for Air Remembrance 1939/45

Orne-Maine). Their main pur-

pose is to locate the estimated

3,000 aircraft—both German

and Allied—that went down in

Normandy, France. When they

locate a crash site, they exca-

vate the aircraft and, if there

were fatalities, put up a memo-

rial that records the names of

the dead.

“They questioned me about

where I had bailed out and a

few weeks later were in contact

to say „We think we‟ve found

your plane and we‟re going to

excavate it.‟”

Needham, his wife Martha,

and several other family mem-

bers returned to France to wit-

ness the excavation. Barry

brought back several parts from

the plane.

“A few days later I got another

communication. „After checking

the serial number,‟ they said

„we‟re sorry. That wasn‟t your

Spitfire. It was a P51 Mus-

tang.‟”

The story of excavating the

wrong plane and the Saskatche-

wan family who came to wit-

ness it was published in the

local French newspaper.

“After it appeared, several

people came forward saying

they thought they might know

where my plane went down,”

Needham says.

The witnesses were able to

supply the exact location of

Needham‟s crash site and the

family once again made the

journey to France. This time, it

was the right plane.

Needham says it was an emo-

tional experience, almost as

emotional as the past few

months have been. “In June, my

old #412 Squadron, which is

now a VIP squadron that flies

the prime minister around, cele-

brated its 70th anniversary. I

was invited to attend the Laying

Up of the Colours in Ottawa.

They flew a King Air to Wynyard

airport to pick me up and fly me

to Ottawa,” he says.

“Then in July, Wynyard cele-

brated its 100th anniversary.

They wanted to have a fly past

for the opening ceremony, so I

contacted the other people who

had flown me to Ottawa. Some

strings were pulled and we had

a fly past.”

For the August 27th renaming

event, Barry had no idea more

strings were being pulled. The

ceremony included a fly past of

a Bell helicopter, a King Air, and

two CT-156 Harvard IIs. Seven-

teen military people were in

attendance.

“it was a surprise and a thrill,”

Needham says. “I was so hon-

oured. It‟s just unbelievable.”

Don Bateman, the inventor of the Ground Proximity Warning System is being inducted this year into

the SAC Hall of Fame. All pilots use the Ground Proximity Warning System ~~ Don‟s invention has, no doubt,

saved thousands of lives.

Come and help us honour this man, who has changed „standard equipment‟ on most aircraft running

today!

Colonel O.B. Philp, “Father of the Snowbirds,” began his career with Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941

in Saskatchewan, then flew the Mitchell bomber and Dakota in WWII. He organized the Canadians Army‟s

first glider pilot school then served years as a test pilot.

The Snowbird‟s mission is to demonstrate to the North American public the skill, professionalism and

teamwork of the men and women of the Canadian Forces.
