A desire to help newborns aff ected by Hurricane Katrina eventually led Lisa Klein to become aware of the needs of infants in her own community. Th us, Loved Twice was born: a local non-profi t clothing underprivileged babies in her own state of California.
Loved Twice provides licensed social workers with boxes of baby clothes to distribute to local shelters, hospitals, and clinics. Powered by a devoted team of over 200 volunteers, Loved Twice has clothed more than 4,000 disadvantaged newborns since 2005.
Despite receiving multiple humanitarian awards and garnering recognition in magazines like People Magazine, Lisa is still running Loved Twice from her basement. Th e expanding non-profi t is in need of funding for a small warehouse to house clothing donations.

Whooping cough, also known as Pertussis, is a serious bacterial infection of the respiratory tract. It can cause illness at any age, but is most severe in young infants and unimmunized people. It usually starts as a mild cold, but then develops into a severe cough, oft en accompanied by a whooping sound and occasionally vomiting. In young infants it can cause lack of breathing (apnea), gagging, and even death.
Whooping cough currently is epidemic in California. Th is means that there are far more cases than usual, and unfortunately a number of young infants have become very sick and even died. Whooping cough is spread mainly by droplets from someone sneezing or coughing, but oft en a person with mild illness may not realize that he or she has the disease. Anyone with a cough lasting longer than 8 to 10 weeks should be checked for Pertussis.
Whooping cough is a preventable illness. Giving the DTAP vaccine to infants and young children, and the newer Tdap vaccine to adolescents and adults, prevents the vast majority of cases. Th e State of California has mandated the Tdap vaccine for all children entering 7th to 12th grade this year as a way of slowing the epidemic.
Some types of antibiotics are useful in treating whooping cough, if started early in the illness. Once someone has reached the coughing stage, antibiotics do not help. Th e most important factors are early diagnosis and treatment, and prevention by proper immunization.
