About the ConventionIt is déjà vu all over again. In 2005, the tradition of hosting the annual NED Alumni Conventions started here in Houston, Texas as the very first NED Convention ever held in the USA. The difference between now and then is that we are eleven conventions richer in experience, and we have not only one, but two organizations hosting the event this time – NEDA Houston and NEDA Dallas, under the umbrella of NEDIAN-NA. Let’s take a quick look at the program below:

Friday Evening:The program starts with a Meet and Greet at 6:00 pm. Sometimes a short walk down memory lane is all it takes to appreciate where you are today. This informal program is designed to give you and your families just that feeling in a very relaxed atmosphere. After a delicious dinner, you will enjoy a light entertainment program which will be performed by fellow NEDians who profess to be comedians, poets, or bathroom singers.

Saturday Day Program:Saturday morning starts with a continental breakfast at 7:30 AM. The day program is a series of conferences and focus group sessions. The conference deliberations will be on the following themes:

• Fostering Innovation Culture and Entrepreneurial Spirit • Nurturing our Alma Mater

This conference will examine research and development both locally and internationally through interactive discussions with our distinguished panelists who are making a significant difference in the field of technology, education, business, and in the social welfare sector. The conference will then zero in on synergizing our local resources and expertise in nurturing our alma mater. These forums will be capped off by a keynote speech by a distinguished speaker.

The day program will also feature achievements and the visions of our alumni organizations all across North America and how these organizations are making a difference in the community here and back home. After lunch, we have organized a focus group meeting that will allow the audiences to meet one-on-one with our distinguished panelists.

While NEDians are busy attending professional forums, their families can visit the Galleria Mall – the most popular retail and tourist destination in Houston. It is only a few minutes’ drive from the convention center. We have arranged a bus for pickup and drop-off for our guest’s convenience.

Saturday Evening Program:The main feature of this program will be the ‘Grand Dinner’ which will be inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor of NED University. The keynote speaker of the dinner program is NED Alumnus Mr. Ashraf Habibullah, a charismatic speaker and the Founder and CEO of Computers & Structures, Inc. There will be an award ceremony where our alumni dedicated to our cause will be acknowledged. The program will also feature a comedy show as well as musical entertainment by Ali Haider, a renowned singer who is also a NED Alumnus!

In between the events, plenty of food and drinks will be served. You and your families can also shop around at the vendor booths placed in the hallway of the hotel. Lastly, there will be free giveaways for all the attendees. We are very honored to host this event and heartily welcome you and your family. We hope you enjoy your time at the 12th Annual NED Alumni Convention in Houston, Texas!

My dear NEDians and friends of NED University,

I am delighted to contribute this note of felicitation on the auspicious occasion of 12th International Convention of NED Alumni Association, North America. I am positive that friends and colleagues from the United States, Canada and other parts of the world shall join this event, which is regularly organised with the enormous efforts of office bearers and their teams. Let me express my profound gratitude to the entire NED fraternity in this continent for remembering their alma mater and participation in its progress in more than one ways.

We in Pakistan keenly keep track of your outstanding achievements and successes and attempt to keep our faculty, students and professional circles informed about your impressive accomplishments. In many cases, your meritorious performances serve as worth emulating examples when we deliberate around topics such as career paths, professional developments and enterprises in innovation. I am very impressed to learn that Mr Ashraf Habibullah, one of the most outstanding alumnus of NED, shall be a main speaker in the moot. I earnestly look forward to meet him and listen to his words of wisdom and exchange thoughts and ideas with him and all the learned colleagues from our cherished fraternity.

The themes of deliberation for this event, ‘serving our home land’ and ‘nurturing our alma mater’ are not only timely and relevant, but carry immense importance to us, back in NED and Pakistan. I shall dilate on these themes with a background description of currently prevailing challenges that the university faces as well as the possible ways where your invaluable input can make a greater difference.

I extend my congratulations to you and the entire NED fraternity on organizing this meticulous event with a purpose and fostering support to your alma mater. May I bring in your kind notice that the year 2022 shall, Insha’Allah mark centennial celebration of NED. We shall chalk out a memorable but useful scheme of events to commemorate the century of existence and performance of our beloved institution, with your kind input, in a befitting manner.

My Fellow NEDians:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the NED Alumni Network of North America (NEDIAN-NA) it is my privilege to welcome you to the Twelfth Annual NED Alumni Convention.

The two alumni associations that took up the mantle to host this year’s convention are deserving of our gratitude. Both NEDA Houston and NEDA Dallas, in spite of being relatively young organizations, have put together an event that is truly worthy of the NEDians and will surely set the bench mark for the next conventions. The members of these organizations, the Steering Committee along with many others have worked tirelessly to make this convention possible. A Texas sized thank you to you for everything you have done!

In twelve short years, the alumni network has become a strong and vibrant community of professionals who share not only an alma mater, but also values, character and ethos. I am extremely happy to report that the various alumni organizations in North America, from Toronto to Texas and from Connecticut to California are all growing, getting ever more organized and working in unison for the betterment of NED and NEDians. There can be no denying that because of the growing interaction between the alumni, both NED University as well as the NEDians are better off. The alma mater has benefited from a plethora of initiatives; scholarships to research grants to physical assets in various fields of engineering. The alumni find themselves to be a much more connected and “in touch” group, exploring networking opportunities, benefitting from exchange of experiences and ideas and learning about new developments and progress in their fields.

With each convention, the alumni community is getting more cohesive and the results are there for everyone to see. These conventions have been the cornerstone of the development of many initiatives to help the alma mater. First and foremost among them being the establishment of the NED Alumni Endowment Fund (ALEF). As with the past conventions, this convention will be yet another major source of ideas and initiatives.

Sincerely,

Amir ul IslamNEDIAN-NA Board of Directors

Dear NEDians:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of NED Alumni of Dallas (NEDEAN), it is with immense pleasure that I welcome you all to the 12th Annual NED Alumni International Convention.

Just a few years ago, there was no sign of any NED Alumni Organization in the greater DFW metropolis. Since its inception on January 18, 2014, NEDEAN’s membership has shown tremendous growth. Due to its strong and dedicated membership base, NEDIAN-NA entrusted this young yet very vibrant organization to carry the torch of hosting the Annual Convention this year.

NEDEAN’s journey to become one of the host organizations can be best described by Aristotle’s famous quote “the whole is better than its parts.” This journey continued as seasoned Alumni all across North America teamed up to form a steering committee; that is to say, the parts became a whole to create something better. The committee supported local host organizations through their experiences and resourcefulness. This experience underscores the importance of teamwork – Together Everyone Achieves More! For the last several months, we have been working intensively to make your stay pleasant and enjoyable. The Steering committee along with many other committee members and local volunteers have worked tirelessly and meticulously to make this a successful event. The driving force for these volunteers has been none other than the love for their alma mater. They all deserve a big round of applause!

Houston offers a very homely feeling, not only due to its weather and its variety of desi restaurants and desi radio channels, but also because of its social and lively Pakistani community. Social activities like mushairas, cultural and social events are norm of the city.

We welcome you to Houston with best wishes for a very enjoyable stay and a very successful NED Convention.

Regards,

Javaid IqbalChairman NEDEAN, NED Alumni of Texas (DFW)

As NEDians, we share a bond with thousands of other alumni around the world. It is with this sense of camaraderie that the NED Alumni Association of Texas Houston decided to host the NED Alumni Convention in 2005 in Greater Houston– the first International Alumni Convention with the theme ‘Bringing NEDian’s Together’. The objective was not just to bring NEDians together for the weekend, but to create a broad, strong, and long lasting NEDian alliance.

History shows the successful convention in Houston inspired other regional NED Alumni Associations and a trend started with ten more conventions every year after that; the trend continues and the alliance gets stronger every year.

As Chairman of 12th Convention steering committee and NED Alumni Association of Texas, Houston, I welcome you all to the 12th Annual Convention. I extend my gratitude to all those Alumni who generously sponsor these conventions every year. I want to thank the Steering Committee for providing valuable support and vision to the various committees and volunteers who worked hard for several months to make the convention successful.

This convention is an opportunity for a great weekend to be shared amongst families, friends, and colleagues. Let’s avail this time to celebrate our heritage in each other’s good company. Let us fill the days and evenings with smiles, good talk, and good actions that we will look back on for years to come.

I strongly feel that we can achieve whatever we aspire for. We also have a great responsibility to be a role model for our future generations. We must always conduct ourselves with utmost integrity and mutual respect when dealing with the affairs of the association. I am confident that together we can achieve this and much more.

Best Regards,

It is my great honor and pleasure to welcome the Alumni of NED University of Engineering and Technology to Houston, from all across North America and all corners of the world, for a weekend full of technical deliberations, conferences, family entertainment and annual gala dinner. I especially welcome the Vice Chancellor Honorable Dr. Muhammad Afzal Haque.

The invitation and request for this message is an honor that I hold in great esteem. NED has a special place in my heart. I was on the roll to be inducted into the entering class of 1980. I had the honor to be invited by the Chancellor of the university to attend a special session with the top of students of Karachi, before the session. However, I pursued Electrical Engineering at University of Houston but for several years my heart and mind were with the university of my dream.

The Nadirshaw Eduljee Dinshaw (NED) University, founded in 1922, is not only a world class institution but speaks volumes about Pakistan, by its name alone – signifying the multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religion aspects of Pakistan in general and Karachi in particular. NED has successfully steered Pakistan through thick and thin of development and progress, in a region that has suffered enormously due to partition of the subcontinent, cold war, the Afghan wars and now the war on terror. NED Alumni are spread all over the world and have played central role in key sectors. They have ensured not only the rise of Pakistan economically but have contributed to the wellbeing of people all over the world.

The NEDIANs of North America are proud citizens of US and Canada, and are acting as a bridge for the immigrant communities of people of Pakistani origin in North America. They have quietly gotten involved in each and every industry, in all nooks and corners of this vast land. They are capable of providing world class engineering in all kinds of areas. It is critical that their true potential is recognized by various levels of government and that it be properly utilized. I am committed to assisting the NEDIAN community in whatever manner possible to not only gain access to business opportunities here in the US but to lead the efforts of international trade and commerce so critical for the US.

See you all at the convention in my hometown – Houston.

Organization ProfilesNED International Alumni Network of North America (NEDIAN-NA)

NEDIAN NA (NED International Network Alumni Network of North America), a non-profit 501c(3) organization, was established on July 31st, 2010, at the NED 2010 Chicago: 6th Alumni International Convention, as a national umbrella organization for the alumni associations in North America. Currently its members are the alumni associations of Chicago, Houston, Dallas, New England, Silicon Valley (CA), Southern California, Tri-state (NJ, NY & CT) and (from Canada) Alberta, and Washington-DC.

The organizational goal of NEDIAN-NA is to bring together the alumni associations across North America under one umbrella and provide a platform to work cogently for the welfare and betterment of the Alma Mater and its alumni.

During its five years of existence, NEDIAN-NA has grown to play a pivotal role in the efforts to enable the alumni to contribute to the University in a coordinated and meaningful manner. NEDIAN-NA, through its various association members, has established a tradition of holding yearly conventions in the major cities across North America. These conventions have become the highlight of the alumni cooperation and networking efforts and provided a platform to all NEDians to benefit from the association with their fellow alumni.

With the passage of years, NEDIAN-NA has become the point of contact between the University and the alumni community. Substantive dialogues with the administration on a regular basis have brought about a much better understanding of the problems facing the Alma Mater, have developed a high level of trust and cooperation between the alumni community and the university, and have finally started bearing concrete results in the form of tangible projects and initiatives.

Perhaps the singular achievement of NEDIAN-NA is the formation and startup of an endowment fund NED-ALEF (NED Alumni Endowment Fund). ALEF’s impact is beginning to be felt and the investment in underway. Its projects include research grants and financial assistance to students. The future of this endeavor will be bright and will play an instrumental role in making NED University a premier learning and research institute.

The other, and no less important, goal of NEDIAN NA is to work for the alumni in North America. Through a variety of initiatives, the association is working to achieve the following:

• Prepare and provide a comprehensive database of NED alumni all over the world so that they can reach out and interact with each other• Facilitate professional development of its alumni by organizing technical seminars and professional development courses• Strengthen the role of NEDIAN-NA in organizing annual conventions that are focused and beneficial to its members and NED University • Bring the new generation of NED alumni to the fore and develop leadership to support and strengthen the ties with each other and with their alma mater.

Welcome to Texas! If you were to ask a Texas native about some of the best things about The Lone Star State, the responses would vary from our classic southern hospitality, barbeque that is smoked to perfection, or the beautiful rolling fields of bluebonnets. Every year, these flowers cover huge fields in parks and along highways and roads and blur the line from where the field ends and the sky begins. If you aren’t from Texas, you should know that bluebonnets are kind of a big deal. Here are some fun facts about our state flower:

#1: As the state’s official flower, we tend to get a little prideful in our bluebonnet fields. There are entire parks and trails dedicated to this flower. One of the most popular locations for bluebonnets is the Ennis Bluebonnet Trail which contains forty miles of some of the best views in Texas.

#2: The love for bluebonnets began when Lady Bird Johnson focused on the beautification and conservation of fields along highways. Thanks to our former First Lady, we no longer have junkyards

along our highways. Her environmentalist focus was monumental in beginning to preserve and protect our planet’s ecosystem.

#3: Although the peak bluebonnet season is during March and

April, Texas has some of the best arboretums open to the public where you can see other native Texas plants such as the Texas Milkweed or Yellow Bells. The Lady Bird

Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin

hosts some of the best flowers year-round. Another option for

wildflower and Texas native flower viewing includes the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center

or the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. All three are a must see for Texas visitors. #4: Bluebonnets are essential for the wellbeing of our ecosystem. Native plants, such as the bluebonnet, help bees pollinate and sustain our environment. As the honeybee population is rapidly declining, it is important that we all do our part in protecting these helpful critters by educating ourselves of their importance. Do research on what plants for specific regions will help encourage pollination (such as the bluebonnet in North and East Texas) and help create urban habitats for pollinators. This can be as simple as planting a couple of region specific native plants in your backyard. In order to improve crop yields, preserve biodiversity, and protect the Earth, we all must do our part in protecting the honeybee and our native plants.

We hope you enjoy your stay at The Lone Star State. Take time to discover our hidden treasures and everything that Texas has to offer.

Welcome, y’all! ★

Mukhtar Zaidi

Nurturing Our Alma Mater

Nurturing our Alma Mater is a small contribution to the journey pioneered by Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw in 1924, by funding Prince of Wales Engineering College during that time.

Nurturing the foundation of an Engineering college in a barren land, though rich in intellectual potential was the job of a philanthropist who had the heart to help an institution in need. Little did he know that the brainchild of his in an incubator will eventually produce engineers and entrepreneurs that will top the world. His act of giving across the ethnic and sectarian lines was God’s work on earth.

His feat of goodwill can never be matched, but the theme of our convention, “Nurturing Our Alma Mater” is a humming resonance and a reminder of his work. For us, his work is bigger than life. It has and will continue to benefit generations to come.

Since 1924 to the present day, things have drastically changed and the challenges are daunting. Our homeland is in turmoil and the ethnic and religious violence is at its peak. People who were once a family are at each other’s throats - for causes not known to the average mind. However, the offspring’s of NED have been anything but average! We can and will solve this problem for no other reason than-- if not us then who?

We know the problem is not genetic. The same Pakistani genes when placed in a different environment of the West produces remarkable results. The list is long, our people continue to outperform in technology, science and entrepreneurship. It is the environment that drags us in the abyss. Let’s change the environment that is poisoning our children, distracting our youth, and contaminates our genes.Education, enlightenment and opportunity are the keys to recovery. We can change the course of the nation by providing the fundamentals, the lack of what has destroyed us.

Our theme of this Convention, “Nurturing our Alma Mater” provides the serum that “Nurtures our Homeland” and tables the necessary elements of education and opportunity that will bring enlightenment.

The alumni of NED have been relentless in fulfilling the founder’s dreams, by giving back to the community. Here is the Report on the Goodwill work done by NEDians or their spouses:

• Koshish Foundation provides scholarships to the needy at NED and sponsor chair at faculty.

• United we Reach, run by the spouse of an NEDian with the vision of Education Equality for all help to provide quality elementary school education to the underprivileged children in Pakistan and Africa.

• NED ALEF (NED Alumni Endowment Fund) was instituted in 2012 to enhance the excellence our Alma mater and has already started making an impact with the establishment of the Fablab, a 3-D printing facility. It has established the JPC Chair in the field of Structural Engineering.

• DICE, (Distinguished Innovations Collaboration and Entrepreneurship), the largest and the oldest innovation platform of Pakistan is a brain child of an NEDian. The platform’s vision is to foster innovation and indigenous product development culture in the country and make it part of the nation’s DNA and use innovation as a tool to generate wealth for the nation. The goal is to provide a common platform for academia, industry, government and expatriates to share and collaborate on innovative concepts and products. Over the last ten years, DICE has been able to establish six innovation platforms throughout Pakistan in the areas of automotive, energy & water, health, textile, agriculture & food sciences and information & enabling technologies.

• “Eye in Silicon Valley” a seminar series was started for our Alma Matter but was never limited to our Alma Mater. It has already reached ten Pakistani Universities. The goal is three fold: inspire our students, direct our students as to what technologies to work on and connect them to Silicon Valley and the World by providing internships and job opportunities.

• “Science Book Clubs” were established to take the movement of reading science from door to door, to eradicate the destructive thought process of those, who once funded our engineering education, the underprivileged tax payers of Pakistan, to replace it by the rational thinking of science.

Yes, our homeland may be in turmoil, and the ordinary man in terror, but we will not abandon him, in his time of need. That is a promise.

These continued reunions, and the pursuit to “Nurture our Alma Mater” for the common good, is a glowing reminder to us that the children of Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw value his initiative, and the impact he has had on our lives. We will never, ever forget him. ★

Dr. Muhammad Afzal Haque

NED’s Past and Future: A Message From the Vice Chancellor

A brief update about the university shall put the discussion in appropriate perspective. NED continued to function as an engineering college at its Strachan Road campus till 1976-77. The institution was upgraded as a university in 1977 and re-located

to its main campus, adjacent to University of Karachi. It experienced growth and development in multifarious dimensions. From the primary disciplines of civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, the university presently offers about 28 programmes at the undergraduate level in various engineering disciplines, architecture, applied and even social sciences. As many as 41 postgraduate programmes are offered in various fields of specialization since the past four decades. The university also offers doctoral programmes in many disciplines which invite promising day scholars to benefit from research facilities and opportunities available within our folds. Regular publication of peer reviewed journals, holding of conferences and seminars, enthusiastic participation of our students in national and international sporting events, conduct of diverse social activities and engaging with important civil causes, constitute the routines of our academic life. I request you to connect with our website which provides a gist of our activities round the year.

NED has launched a business incubation centre with an objective to promote entrepreneurship in the disciplines taught and conducted in her campuses. In the competitive world of today, it is very vital to support creative fresh graduates – who may possess worthwhile business ideas – but may lack resources and mentorship. With this platform in our regular activity plan, NED intends to help nurture ideas and their propounders to excel as self-employed professionals. A complete reverse engineering system with scanning and 3-D printing facility is established with the donation received from NEDAN-ALEF. This facility is being used for producing prototypes. A state of the art facility is being designed and constructed through the generous assistance of a private donor. The process of incubation has already begun.

We have also been able to get assistance from alumni and philanthropists for various development schemes in the University. One philanthropist has provided assistance for construction of a complete

new academic block comprising of six class rooms and faculty offices. Similarly, another philanthropist is helping us to get the University mosque expanded twice the existing size so as to accommodate large population of students and faculty. Some alumni have extended support for converting all lights and fans in the class rooms of Civil Engineering department on Solar Energy whereas in electronic engineering department all class rooms have been completely renovated by another group of alumni. A 3-D virtual lab is also being established in Petroleum Engineering department with the assistance of a group of alumni. Let me also share that we have approached DHA Karachi administration for providing us a piece of land in DHA City Karachi where we would like to establish a Technology Park. DHA administration has assured us of considering our request. In this regard, we are approaching Higher Education Commission and other private donors for providing assistance for the construction of the Park. We do expect similar response from NED alumni as well.

You may all cherish the fact that NED has provided quality education at nominal fee. This approach continues today. A sizable bulk of our student body comes from middle, lower middle income or even lesser backgrounds. As always, the only criteria to entry is a hard contested academic merit. Very bright young people, but with very humble backgrounds end up in our campuses. We strive to transform them into capable professionals, irrespective of their affordability status. But with rising costs and limitations on state funding, our task is becoming tougher every passing day. I urge you to consider more tuition support scholarships and any other form of bursaries that you may consider apposite. Such initiatives will become a worthwhile bridge between NEDians of yesterday and tomorrow! I will keep apprising you of our work, achievements and challenges from time to time.

I also request you to consider contributing towards NED Endowment Fund which has now been re-structured with full measure of scientific fund management, investment and spending. We wish to raise the worth and outlay of this investment venture to a level where at least one third of the university budget is financed by the returns flowing from the endowment. You are a witness to the fact that most

of the prestigious universities across the globe have impressive endowments that ensure their smooth and independent working. Similarly through effective networking and sharing of information, the alumni can help in locating appropriate opportunities for NED’s young graduates and faculty members to approach the training and higher education opportunities. These ventures can be effectively realized when we stay in close contact with each other.

Finally, I extend again my congratulations to you and the entire NED fraternity on organizing this meticulous event with a purpose and fostering support to your alma mater. May I bring in your kind notice that the year 2022 shall, Insha’Allah mark centennial celebration of NED. We shall chalk out a memorable but useful scheme of events to commemorate the century of existence and performance of our beloved institution, with your kind input, in a befitting manner. ★

Why an Alumni Association is Necessary

Associations bring together people who belong to a particular institution of learning. The graduates meet under the banner of their alma mater for the common goal of promoting community, dialogue, joy, and matters of their professions. People reconnect with old classmates to continue the relationships they had developed during their time at their institution-- their Alma Mater.

Depending on the goals and mission of the association, the group can further promote a particular profession within the realms of their alma mater through enhancing the foundation of their profession by conducting seminars, giving presentations, or providing scholarships. Or the association can be solely for the purpose of reconnecting and reminiscing about the time spent together at their institution. Reliving memories of old professors or the recreational activities that had passed the time. Some may look forward tothese events for their agendas or networking opportunities, while others are just glad to be in the presence of old friends. Either way, the common theme is to create mutual happiness.

Despite the motive to join an alumni association, such a network provides a number of benefits to the members, and at times to the alma mater itself. Members are pleased to be reunited. It provides a platform for the members to help their alma mater through financial support by providing scholarships, or by financing a project undertaken by a group of students, helping them to form a new faculty, enhancing an existing program through additional staffing, financing equipment for a laboratory, or arranging for books for a library. It can help enhance the academia at the institution through consulting and raising the standard in terms of competitiveness. For over a decade, NEDians in North America have formed various alumni associations. The majority of these local/regional associations have

joined NEDIAN-NA, an international organization that has brought participant associations under one umbrella. The objective of NEDIAN-NA is to provide a single point source to coordinate the majority of activities. These activities include coordinating NEDians’ international convention in North America and providing a single unified source of contact with the NED University of Engineering & Technology (NEDUET), the alma mater. Various entities have been formed under the auspices of NEDIAN-NA. A prominent one is the NED Alumni Endowment Fund (NED-ALEF). The NED-ALEF fund has been established for a few years and is modeled after other well endowed alumni associationsof recognized institutions in the United States. NED-ALEF raises funds and invests in securities to generate income, while providing funding for various projects undertaken by NEDUET. The utilization of these funds is based on mutual agreement between board of directors of NED-ALEF and Vice Chancellor of NEDUET. The process of funding has just begun and there is due effort and hope that it will provide a sustainable system of funding to the alma mater. The NED-ALEF fund will be used to provide scholarship to needy students at NEDUET and finance various projects.

The local and regional NEDians’ associations in North America conduct their own programs on a regular basis. The programs include Scholarship distribution, Eid-Millan party, technical seminars, and various other local events including picnics and dinners. For example, NEDATS, the regional association that covers Tri-State (New York, New Jersey and part Connecticut) area, conducts annual scholarship and Eid-Milan programs. In April 2014, NEDATS distributed $29,000 to 14 students at a scholarship awards ceremony. These students were either children of NEDian alumni or were themselves NEDian alumni pursuing higher education in the United States.

Every year, one of the local associations organizes

International NED Alumni Convention under the umbrella of NEDIAN-NA. These conventions bring together NEDians from all over the USA and Canada, as well as some from Pakistan and Europe; and in most cases areattended by the Vice Chancellor of NEDUET. These conventions cover different aspects of professional topics through presentations, meet and greets, and a formal Gala. The main event comprises of music, comedy, and speeches by local associations, as well as the NEDIAN-NA. The topics range from current financial status to the academic situation of the alma mater, and ways and means of enhancing both.

Evident from the prose, an alumni association is necessary. To reiterate: an alumni association allows for friends and peers to come together to relax, reconnect, share ideas, and reminisce about past achievements; it allows a group of people to come together to voice their positions on issues; it allows for social networking, whether helping a member find job placement, ideas to start a business, or advice to succeed in current employment; and it allows for the associations’ shared values to be recognized expeditiously by institutions, corporations, and government.

It can be said that the contemporary alumni of NED University of Engineering & Technology have placed foundation for NEDIAN-NA and local and regional alumni associations in North America that will provide benefits to all NEDians, whether as an alumni in the USA or as a student or a faculty member at the NEDUET. They have sowed the seeds for a tree that will provide shade in foreseeable future to all NEDians.

NED’s 3D Printer Used to Make a Pediatric Prosthetic Arm

about creating an endowment fund similar to the universities in the US. Unfortunately, unlike US universities, NED did not have an existing formal endowment program and everything had to be done from scratch if such a fund was to be created. The formation of NEDIAN-NA, at NED 2010 Chicago was the first step. With the hard work of the Endowment

Adhoc Committee of NEDIAN-NA, a proposal was presented to the NEDians at NED 2012 DC – and NED ALEF was established.

Then came the real work. For an endowment fund to be successful, it must have proper organization, with trustees who have a vision for long-term benefits to

the institution and its students and managers who have the ability and credibility to raise and manage large sums of money. And all this needed to be operated with optimum efficiency and transparency. Only then would NEDians and their friends and supporters would feel comfortable in donating money. Along with the structure, processes need to be in place to deploy the funds.

NEDIAN-NA BOD entrusted this Herculean task to the Endowment Adhoc Committee, which, after months of work, and conferring with attorneys and accountants, completed the task of setting up the structure and Operating Guidelines for NED ALEF, which were approved by NEDIAN-NA BOD in December 2014. The BOD selected for a two year period, a five member Board of Trustees (BOT), as the policy-making and controlling body and a seven member Executive Council (EC) to oversee, guide and direct the work of NED ALEF. Both bodies assumed their responsibilities as of December 08, 2014.

Bioniks, a prosthetics provider, in collaboration with Xplorer 3D (3D printer manufacturer) and Viscous.co (3D printer retailer) to provide a child with a 3D printed hand. Mir Bayyaan Baloch, a five-year-old boy, is the first Pakistani child to receive such a treat-ment. Mir was born without a right hand, with the Mir’s father, Mir Umer Baloch, the three companies and NED University have given him an artificial hand that allows him to do things other children can normally do.

With the help of a Xplorer 3D printer stationed at the NED University of Engineering and Technology, Bioniks printed the UnLimbited Arm. They then adjusted the device to fit the boy’s arms. The work on the 3D printed arm was carried out at NED’s MakerStudio (a 3D Print-ing Facility) The MakerStudio was set up with funds raised by NEDEA Chicago, to honor one of their own, departed Chicago NEDIAN Engineer Asim Zuberi, BE Mech 1991, (1967 - 2013) and donated to NED by NED ALEF.

History of NED ALEF

Since 2005, there have been twelve NED Alumni Conventions in North America. NEDians have used these conventions to reconnect with class mates, schedule reunions, make new friends, start businesses together, help each other, and come up with numerous ideas to do more for NED, for NEDians, for the communities we live in - and for Pakistan.

At each NED event, one of the common themes had been that the NED Alumni Associations in North America should jointly undertake organized efforts to help the Alma Mater. There had been discussions

Status

Of the $85k collected to date, NED ALEF has accomplished the following at NED:

• Funded the FABLAB/Makerstudio, with $10k collected by NEDEA Chicago

• Funded the NED Alumni BIM Project, with $24k collected by NEDATS

• Granted funding $ 6k (total commitment of $17k, over three years) for PhD-level research in the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology on the topic “Unsupervised learning of traffic pattern for anomaly detection”

In addition, in keeping with the concept of endowment funds, a sum of $30k has been invested with Meryl Lynch.

The other major accomplishment of NED ALEF is the establishment of “JPC Chair” (thanks to Jersey PreCast Industries) within the Department of Civil Engineering. JPC Chair is a five year commitment of $ 60k per year and is aimed at helping in further strengthening the quality of the programs being offered as well as laying a strong foundation for future research activities at the Department. The creation of JPC Chair would enhance the Department`s ability to attract and retain exceptionally qualified faculty members and to develop strong links between the Industry and the University.

NED ALEF BOT and EC have been in communication with the Vice Chancellor and administration of NEDUET on a regular basis to identify areas to most effectively use the funds collected and generated by NED ALEF.

Goal

Though the potential is unlimited, NED ALEF, has begun with somewhat modest and goals. So far just over $ 85k has been collected. We would like collect another $ 50k by the end of this year, and another $ 100k in 2017.

NEDians - Step up and matter. Build a Better NED.

Lead The Way!

Each one of us is a teacher in some ways. Your words, gestures and vibrations affect all those around you. Especially, if you assume the role of a leader, many people look up to you and follow your footsteps. In today’s world where Project Management is prevalent in different career paths, many professionals are rising to positions that require them to oversee and direct other people.

This article will highlight the qualities of a leader and describe major differences between a leader and a manager. It has been inspired by the presentation ‘Understanding that Managerial & Leadership Approaches are Radically Different’ by Aslam Mirza and the book ‘The 12 pillars of Project Excellence’ by Adil F. Dalal.

The term “Project Manager” or “Project Leader” do not refer to the title but to the skill-set and more importantly, the mind-set of the individual (Dalal, 23). Typically however, managerial position is assigned by the company or the job description, but leadership is an advanced skill level that is earned by the individual. The focus of leadership is on people, on wider and long term vision while the focus of managers is on processes, short term goals and objectives. Managers deal with ‘what and when’, are innovative, flexible and take on risks; while leaders deal with ‘how and why’, are conforming, follow consistency and avoid risks.

Leaders realize that in order for a project to succeed each team member needs to share the same motto and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, many companies treat people like machines and are solely focused on producing results rather than nurturing their individual growth and enhancing their strengths. Each member of a team is unique, and good leaders

understand their capabilities. A research performed by Bridges Business Consultancy shows that nine out of ten strategic implementations fail. If the team is not inspired and is dysfunctional, even the best strategy will fail.

Source: Dalal, Adil F. 2012. The 12 pillars of Project Excellence.

Each project has a vision and a good leader constantly motivates each member to make sure that they are on the same level. If any one of the team member is losing motivation, they help them individually and inspire them to move on. Leaders create good relationship with everyone and have the quality of persuasion and good team work. They also provide mentoring and coaching and respect each team member’s opinion. They create a very conducive working environment by developing a strong connection and earn the team members’ respect.

Managers on the other hand, are focused mostly on processes, day to day operations and bottom line numbers. They rarely question the higher authority and simply execute the instructions without much thought as to what effect it will have on the team and team members. They are focused on keeping the

organization order, planning, budgeting and organizing. Their intent is to get the job in hand done anyhow, no matter if it creates stress to the team members which eventually leads to lesser productivity and affects the overall success of the job.

Every level of high performance is based on leadership. For anyone to move to a leadership role, they have to start from self leadership and development. It takes a lot of self awareness, understanding one’s own strengths and weakness and self grooming to be a leader and inspire others. Leaders lead through inspiration rather than coercing and hierarchical control. Leaders are proactive and have a global perspective while managers are constantly in a reactive mode and focus their time on solving the problem at hand. Leaders empower the team and focus on team development while managers focus on increasing efficiency by forceful accountability. Leaders develop followers while managers develop workforce.

It is important to note that there has to be a balance between leading and managing. While performing organizational processes may be the main goal, it should not be performed by stifling the team and creating low morale among employees. Projects will flourish if the team members’ individuality, strength and urge to grow are respected. The backbone of any organization is trust and if there is no belongingness among the team members, the work environment will likely not reap as many fruits of success.

Therefore, for any project to be successful it is imperative to have a mindset of a team leader rather than a project manager. As Admiral Grace Murray Hopper says – “You manage things; you lead people.” ★

Zahid Baber

A Tribute to Abdul Sattar Edhi

Abdul Sattar Edhi, the founder of a vast public welfare organization that spans Pakistan was a symbol of the country’s secular tradition. Edhi, who passed away on July 8, 2016 at the age of ninety never turned anyone away from his hospitals, homeless shelters, rehab centers and orphanages.

Edhi was born on January 1, 1928 in Manavader, Gujraat in British India and moved to Pakistan six days after it was founded in August 1947. He attended some of the public speeches made by Qaid-E-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who led the movement for a Muslim majority state but wanted the country to be a secular state. Edhi moved to Karachi by boat into a megacity of more than 20 million people. He was 20 years old when he landed at Karachi harbor. He initially earned his livelihood by selling pencils, match boxes, towels and other small items. Later he sold “paan”, the betel leaf and nut mixture chewed by many in the subcontinent and then worked for his father who was a trader, but he found this work very unsatisfying. After observing that the environment he was living in was plagued by injustice, bribery and robbery, he felt an urge to do welfare work. He set up his first pharmacy in a tent next to his family home in Jodi Bazaar. This simple pharmacy offered drugs, and basic medical care regardless of people’s ability to pay.

The headquarters of Edhi foundation was based on a small building where he lived until the end of his days in a tiny backroom. He persuaded doctors to offer their services for free and used the funds to pay for medicines. Even during his old age, he could still be seen on the streets stopping passers-by and

cars for cash donations, with no one asking for receipts. I was in Pakistan once and had

seen him do that. People would give him cash, checks and get off the

car just to shake hands with him. Some would even embrace and

thank him for his work. He will always be remembered for his social work, simple life style and more importantly for his humanitarian services.

Edhi’s charitable activities expanded in 1957 when an Asian flu epidemic swept Karachi. He borrowed money for tents to treat people who were only asked to contribute financially if

they could afford it. It was the first mass recognition of

his work. A single generous donation from a businessman,

a fellow member of the maimam community allowed Edhi to buy his first

ambulance which he drove himself around the city. Once he was asked as to why he was

prepared to help Christians, Hindus, Sikhs alike, and to that Edhi replied, “because my ambulance is more Muslim than you”. They also opened a woman dispensary and a maternity clinic for the poor.

Abdul Sattar Edhi met Bilquis Bano who became

Pakistan’s most celebrated humanitarian also known as the “Angel of Mercy” and “Baba-E-Khidmat.”

his wife and a key figure in his charity work. She was passionate to help the poor just like her husband Abdul Sattar. They worked together during the 1965 war between India and Pakistan during which Karachi was bombed and which was one of the toughest periods of Edhi’s life. The couple cared for the civilian victims and organized many funerals. Bilquis gave “Gussals” to women bodies and Abdul Sattar prepared men for burial. It is believed that he washed thousands of dead bodies during his life time and found graveyard space in for anyone who needed it. He was at times angry and disappointed at people who thought themselves too grand to touch the dead if they didn’t belong to their own families. The Edhi Foundation became a multi-million dollar enterprise run directly by Abdul Sattar, his wife, and their four children. It is most famous for its fleet of 1,600+ minivan ambulances that are always first on the scene of an accident or more frequently, in the last decade terrorists attacks. The foundation estimated that they have transported a million people to hospitals each year charging a tiny fee for the ride. In Karachi, rival gangs have been known to call temporary ceasefire to their gun battles to allow Edhi’s nominally trained ambulances staff to collect the dead and the wounded.

Unfortunately, in Pakistan, where a public welfare system was negligible, Edhi offered cradle-to-grave services. About 20,000 people have registered as a parent or guardian, and Edhi and his wife began taking in abandoned babies. They started to place babies outside their offices where unwanted infants could be left. Abdul Sattar Edhi filed a court case that ultimately won the right for abandoned children with unknown parents to get the vital national I.D. cards. He was quoted saying, “I am not a very religious person, and I am not against religion as well”. He found inspiration in socialist writers and was a follower of Abu Zarr Ghaffari. He criticized the capitalists’ class in Pakistan who he thought were responsible for poverty in Pakistan and in the world as well. He did not see a reason for restricting the charitable work within

his country. In 2005, the Edhi Foundation donated $100,000.00 to the victims of Hurricane Katrina in the USA and offered considerable amount of monetary donation to the 1985 famine in Ethiopia.

He believed that his religion was serving humanity and that all the religions of the world have their basis in humanity. He passed away due to kidney failure. He was given a state funeral service and became the third Pakistani to receive his historical gun carriage funeral after Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Zia-ul-Haq with guard of honor and a nineteen gun salute to the departed soul.

He was nominated several times for the Nobel Prize but did not receive the prize. He was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1988, Nishan-e-Imtiaz in 1989 and the Wolf of Bhogio Peace Award in 2005 in Italy. The Huffington Post claimed that he might be the world’s greatest humanitarian. We pray for his soul. Ameen. ★

This year, the daughter of NED alumnus Nusrat Hussain Khan, Marium Khan, put together a team of five Muslim students from the Irving community in Texas to be the first Muslim team to participate in, and eventually win, a global innovation challenge held annually at NASA. With the help of their mentor, Mirza Faizan, Marium Khan and her other team-mates, Shafaat Ahsen, Bilaal Hassan, Bilal Nouiouat and Hibaa Thayyil participated in The Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge as “Team Ilm.”

The Challenge is an annual multi-phase innovation and entrepreneurial competition that engages students in all 50 states and 72+ countries on collaborating to create unique and viable solutions that benefit humanity in one of the four areas: aerospace and aviation, cyber technology and security, energy and environment, and health and nutrition. Founded by Nancy Conrad in honor of her late husband, astronaut Charles “Pete” Conrad Jr, the Conrad Challenge is sponsored by NASA, SpaceX and other well-known companies.

These students spent numerous days together, developing their innovation: a wristband called DStress that measures a person’s stress through the cortisol levels in their sweat and is connected to a

mobile app that helps the user manage their stress, like their own personal therapist. This product not only aims to help the millions of people worldwide who feel stressed, but also hopes to save the lives of those who suffer from diseases where stress plays a hidden role. After seven months of competing in their category, health and nutrition, against 53 other teams from all over the world, Team Ilm advanced as Summit Diplomats and were invited to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to pitch their product. They then competed with the remaining 28 teams, and after four intense days, won the most prestigious title of “The 2016 Pete Conrad Scholars.” Not only have they won a global competition, but now they’ll also receive aid from the Conrad Foundation to advance their product and ultimately release it to the public.

“It was the most phenomenal experience; full of hard work, numerous meetings, challenges, surprises, and most importantly, amazing teamwork! We are thankful to our friends, families, and especially to our mentor, Mirza Faizan, who taught us the valuable skills of innovation and professionalism. We are grateful to Allah that we were able to represent Muslims in a more positive light and create something that could benefit humanity!” - Team Ilm ★

FOG NETSOpportunity for Research and Entrepreneurship

Identifying new opportunities for research and innovation is not always an easy task. Translating research ideas into commercially viable projects is even more difficult. Enter fog nets. In the world of water management fog nets are fast becoming the buzz word for an easy solution to a difficult problem.

Fog collectors consisting of polypropylene mesh mounted on vertical posts harvest fog droplets and covey them to storage containers. Collected water is considered potable and can be used not only for drinking but also crop irrigation, livestock beverage and forest restoration.

Currently 17 countries around the globe are researching the use of fog nets. These nets have been successfully used in Chile since 1997 and more recently in Morocco.

Pakistan is considered among one of the most water stressed countries in the world.1 An estimated 44 per cent of the population is without access to safe drinking water, while in rural areas 90 per cent of the population lacks such access.2 Khawaja Asif, Pakistan’s Minister for Water and Power, has warned that “under the present situation, in the next six to seven years, Pakistan can be a water-starved country.”3 In the face of such dire circumstances, unconventional sources of water and methods of water harvesting need to be identified. Fog represents one such large, untapped source of potable water, especially in arid climates.4 While a holistic solution is needed for solving the water crisis, fog nets can form a key component for water delivery to water-stressed communities in Pakistan.

Research suggests that fog collectors work best in locations with frequent fog periods, such as coastal areas where water can be harvested as fog moves inland driven by the wind. The technology could also supply water in mountainous areas if water is present in stratocumulus clouds,. (UNEP, 1997b).5 Research conducted in Nepal suggests a combination of

rain and fog harvesting may be ideal for areas with varying rainfall and dry weather climate.6

NED University’s Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization would be an ideal vehicle for research and development of fog nets in Pakistan. It has the potential for collaboration with world class universities like MIT and international organizations working in the area of fog collection. Once proven to work, fog harvesting kits can be marketed to local non-profits that supply water to disaster stricken areas. ★

The Role of Academia in Networks

Fundamentals of telecommunications networks have remained fairly static over many years, for example, the crux of mobile networks is pretty much the same since the inception of mobile phone, all iterations addressing one key imperative through the progression of radio standards from 2G to 3G to 4G: a communication channel to connect two or more humans, established using multitude of purpose built mobility and security gateways bolted on a packet network originally designed for some other purpose (hint: DARPA).

Now that we stand at the cusp of 5G, which is anticipated to bring connectivity for all, be it fixed or mobile, human or machine, shall we expect the same?

Thanks to software democratization brought to bear by the Cloud and Open Source, extreme programmability through Software Defined Networking, Disaggregation, Softwarization; and directed network autonomy with Data Driven Automation, a completely different ground is being prepared for 5G:

• What used to be a long waterfall process of pre-standards research leading to standards, and standards driving differentiated implementations, is being challenged by a critical business imperative to enable agile, elastic networks with economies of scale.

• What used to be a standards and specifications path led by the Service Providers and network vendors, is now heavily influenced by open source communities formed around academic and pre-industry research, driving key technology trends by churning up open reference implementations at a pace that’s order of magnitude higher than the traditional pace.

These technology trends are driving a multi-faceted transformation leading to 5G:

• Wave-1: transformation of the telecom industry toward complete software democratization and pervasive autonomics.

Key influencers of this transformation are the Linux Foundation, Open Compute Project, Open Daylight initiative, OpenFog consortium, Open Networking Lab (ON.Lab), Openstack and OPNFV; and more so, the Service Provider network transformation projects driving these initiatives, e.g. AT&T Domain 2.0 and Telefonica’s UNICA.

• Wave-2: telecom industry along with its complimentary adjacencies e.g. Artificial Intelligence, Haptics, and Robotics transforming everything around us to fundamentally change the way we live and work.

Research in this area is a bit nascent to predict the ultimate landscape, but some of the early influencers include Pouzin Society’s Future Internet initiatives around RINA, Tactile Internet and 5G Labs collaboration of Kings College London & University of Dresden, Horizon 2020 and 5GPPP; as well as the research initiatives being driven by niche Service Providers like Google and Facebook.

We see one common thread emerging from this pivot, and that is, an increased influence of academia in the future industry landscape.

When it comes to the span of influence, and level of impact, one name that stands out, is that of Dr. Guru Parulkar, Executive Director of Open Networking Research Center, Executive Director of Open Networking Lab, and Consulting Professor of EE at Stanford University.

Guru, along with his colleagues from academia, Nick McKeown (Stanford), Scott Shenker (Berkeley) & Larry Peterson (Princeton), has been instrumental in enabling industry transformation around SDN/NFV in close partnership with key industry visionaries like Mr. John Donovan of AT&T who is perpetually pushing the boundaries of telecom toward the next frontiers.

As SDN was starting to gain traction in the industry in 2011, Nick McKeown and Guru Parulkar from Stanford University and Scott Shenker from University of California Berkeley founded ON.Lab with the mission to create open source SDN platforms that the industry can use and build on. Guru took on the additional responsibility of being the executive director of ON.Lab, and has been relentlessly pushing the envelope since. ON.Lab has created two flagship open source platforms: 1) ONOS as the SDN OS (often called SDN controller) for the Service Providers that can provide scalability, high availability and performance; and 2: CORD: Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter.

CORD, essentially is a game changer, as it aims to reinvent the Service Provider Central Office, and thus has the potential to reinvent the future Access Networks and services for tens of millions of residential, mobile and enterprise consumers as it paves the way for democratized access for billions of connected things anticipated with 5G.

At the auspicious occasion of 2016 NED Alumni International Convention, we requested Guru for inspirational guidance, and here’s his special note to our fellow researchers:

“Software Defined Everything combined with open source software revolution are democratizing innovation big time. This means everyone especially researchers and innovators around the globe have an opportunity to contribute and have a direct impact as opposed to writing a paper and building simulations and prototypes in the lab that don’t get adopted by the industry. N.E.D. researchers should learn to participate and contribute to open source projects and this will be their path to influencing bigger industry trends and benefiting from them.” ★

Guru Parulkar is the Executive Director of Open Networking Research Center, Executive Director of Open Networking Lab, and Consulting Professor of EE at Stanford University.

Guru has been in the field of networking for over 25 years. He joined Stanford in 2007 as the Executive Director of its Clean Slate Internet Design Program. At Stanford, Guru helped create three programs: OpenFlow/Software-Defined Networking, Programmable Open Mobile Internet 2020, and Stanford Experimental Data Center Laboratory.

Prior to Stanford, Guru spent four years at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and worked with the broader research community to create programs such as GENI, Future Internet Design, and Network of Sensor Systems. Guru received NSF Director’s award for Program Management excellence.

Before NSF Guru founded several startups including Growth Networks (acquired by Cisco) and Sceos (IPO’d as Ruckus Wireless). Guru served as Entrepreneur in Residence at NEA in 2001 and received NEA’s Entrepreneurship Award.

Prior to this, Guru spent over 12 years at Washington University in St. Louis where he was a Professor of Computer Science, Director of Applied Research Laboratory and the head of research and prototyping of high performance networking and multimedia systems.

Guru received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Delaware in 1987. Guru is a recipient of the Alumni Outstanding Achievement award and the Frank A. Pehrson Graduate Student Achievement award.

Bhooli Bisri Yaadon Ki Barat at NED 1964-68

The title of this article reflects the antiquated nature of memories of over half a century which, , are still etched in memory. My observation is that as we age, the memories of the past become more vivid. Perhaps it is a blessing that when human beings cannot create new memories due to physical limitations in old age; the memories stored in their “hard drive” are accessible more vividly to spend their time in euphoria over their past achievements.

Our teaching staff at NED was like elders in the family whom we loved and revered but would sometimes rebel . The interaction of the staff amongst themselves was very interesting if you happened to go to the staff common room. Once I was there on an errand and Zia ul Islam Sahib was being taunted by Anwar Chaudhri Sahib that his MSc was so very antiquated that physics hardly was a subject. Zia Sahib retorted that he was as right as “tumhara qatra bhi wajood main nahi aya tha”, and everyone burst out laughing.

Ganatra Sahib had an exam requirement where everyone had to bring their hand-written class notes from his lectures taken throughout the year for him to review. In my group, I was the one to take most notes, and everyone wanted to borrow the notes! I told them that I would share the notes after I was done. After the fourth or fifth review Ganatra Sahib would tell the students, “yeh kagaz kitni martaba aye ga”. That was the polite signal for ‘No More’.

Haider Sahib was a favorite amongst us in Civil Engineering. During the oral exam Viva exam (oral exam) with an external examiner (who was always one of his ex students) he would help the first student (perhaps Salman), by pointing out the rock specimen and naming them in a strategic way. This would be a signal ‘Go & tell others’. He would say that he knew most of us came from middle class families and it would hardship for our parents if we failed.

The Strength of Materials’ laboratory and classes by Aziz Sahib from were also a favorite. He was also the

sports ex-officio. Zahid was the hockey team captain for a year. He would bring daily expenses for ‘doodh and jalebi’ (milk & sweets) from the same vendor and afterr a while, Aziz Sahib would tell him “kahin aur bhi Jaya karo” ;politely indicating not to spend money anymore.

Faiz ul Ghani Sahib taught mathematics from a decade old set of notes. He would refer to his notes and copy them on the board. One day a gust of wind blew the papers from his table. One of the students who collected the papers from floor, mixed them on purpose. He continued with the solution but then from the wrong sheet of paper and everyone was confused. He tried to address it on board but then got confused. So, that day we got off class early!

Dr. Ibrahim taught Mechanics and was a gentleman and a man of principles. Being in Civil engineering academia, we were not very interested in Mechanics, but still had to pass the course. Some of us would skip his classes and borrow notes to study for the exams. I met him personally on a construction site in Islamabad when he was representing a pipe manufacturing company. We also met thereafter.

NED workshop at the back of the college was bare minimum of a facility for an engineering college of international repute. We had to do work with wood and metal in the workshop. For Civil Engineering students, this was a pain during the first year of college but a wink and a tip would take care of samples to get through the assignments and practical exams. The boiler in the mechanical area was a gem. When it started, the college would rumble with strange sounds and faint of heart would cross over the street to the cafe for a front seat, in case it exploded.

One of the annual rituals was getting the tuition fee waived or getting a scholarship to offset the fee. The monthly fee was twelve rupees or maybe a little higher. The highlight of that day would be rough shod with patches and scratches and sob stories to

gain the sympathy of the teachers for the scholarship. The teachers making the determination were aware of it, but doled it to whom they thought were most deserving. The next day life was back to normal and those who received scholarships would treat their close buddies to tea and maybe biscuits.

The requirement during the third year in NED was a trip to major projects and other locations in West Pakistan. Railway bogies would be reserved and that would be our home for next thirty days. Students on that trip would visit various places, desirable for some and undesirable for others, depending on one’s perspective. Some of the observations were flabbergasting, as those considered virtuous were found loitering in non-virtuous places, more than once. There was a rule to return to the parked train bogies by 10 pm and some flouted the rules. Haider Sahib had to question the late comers as he was in charge, but would waive it off saying it was inappropriate to meddle in people’s personal affairs.

In Peshawar, Anwar got a group of young dancing hejras to perform at the main platform late at night and what a raucous party it created! Just imagine trains passing in each direction and passengers confused whether to board the train or get off to enjoy the party. It was a blast of a party! The culmination was in Mohenjo Daro, where a goat was slaughtered by the locals to prepare food for the group. The late lunch hunger caused a rampage on the food and in the pandemonium, a colleague rummaged in the dish but could not find a piece of meat and shouted in a state of delirium “Booti kahan hai!”. From that day onwards, he was known as Booti.

The lunch at a restaurant across the intersection, close to “Bholoo ka Akhara” would cost four annas for “aalo ka salan and roti” and additional “ghareebi” aka gravy, whichwas free. The more lavish lunches were at Dehli Muslim or Dehli Muslim Kali restaurant and would cost eight to twelve annas (sixteen annas to a rupee) depending on the dish. The bus ride was a maximum of two annas to the farthest area of Karachi.

The stories I heard indicate that NED had the first rights on the slogan “Yahoo”. They would raise this slogan in sports competition with Dow Medical College, where they would invite themselves as “Dolha Bhai aye hain”. They would chant Yahoo and

mimic Dow Medical response “Ooi Allah”. The banter would go on to cheer for their teams.

NED hockey team in 1964 was rejuvenated with the new 1964 batch which included a lot of accomplished hockey players from different hockey clubs. The nerds have arrived! The group formed an accomplished team and won the University championship beating other colleges for four years in a row. . One of the highlights of my stay was the hockey match we played against PIA in the 1968 Agha Khan Gold Cup at the YMCA. PIA was a star studded team with more than half the team comprising of national hockey team and Olympians. We were just awestruck and felt overwhelmed. The nerds regrouped under Zahid and Tanveer and held the PIA goalless until half time, but PIA won.

The above is but a smattering of recollections and to be fair, one needs to write a book. Life at NED was not just about books and studies, but it included sports, fun, pranks, horsing around and all aspects of a day to day life. Those are the days I still yearn about - the days at NED! ★

This article is written by Syed Hasan Zaheer BE Civil 1968 from NED College. He did his ME Civil from City College CCNY. He has been working with Fluor in their Calgary office in Canada as Director, Estimating.

Sawayra: Engineering Solutions for a Better World!

Imagine spending one third of your life looking for and fetching drinking water!

Imagine losing your child to a disease originating from unclean water supply or unhygienic surroundings!

Imagine getting your loved one treated at a rural hospital with little or no electricity!

These are some of the major issues faced by the average Pakistani-Sawayra, a humanitarian, non-profit corporation 501(c)(3) charity created by Pakistani Engineers/ Professionals residing in North America has resolved to tackle these problems. With more than 60% of Pakistanis living below the poverty line and earning less than $1/day, the key to promoting self-sufficiency in basic necessities such as electricity, water, recycling and waste management is using low-cost, distributed solutions. Sawayra’s model is to innovate and then publicize (open-source) the information to maximize adoption by individuals and organizations, instead of relying on projects that require huge capital investments, infrastructure and centralized management.

At Sawayra, our approach is grounded in local ownership and civic partnerships at the grassroots level. Renewable and sustainable solutions are developed and deployed in partnership with universities, trade schools, community associations as well as public and private organizations. Sawayra’s technical mentors and project managers have commenced Low Cost Water Filter, Atmospheric Water Generator, Home Solar Kit projects with student interns, many of them from NED Engineering University, Karachi.

Sawayra has launched a project at the biggest philanthropic city in Pakistan, Rashidabad, located in Rural Sindh near Tando Ilahyar. Rashidabad’s Bilquis Memorial Hospital provides free services to poor residents from neighboring villages but faces a shortfall in budget. Sawayra’s Bilquis Memorial Solar

Electrification project team comprising NED interns (three from Mechanical and two from Electrical Departments) working under the guidance of Sawayra Technical Mentor and NED Alumni Khurram Abdullah, have designed and proposed a solution that will not only yield ROI of 100K PKR/ month but will decrease carbon footprint by approx. 2.5 million tons of CO2 (which is equivalent to growing 2.1 acres of forest in a yr). Sawayra is partnering with Hunar Foundation to train the local technical school students in installation and maintenance of the system.

An estimated 250,000 children die every year in Pakistan from water borne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, typhoid, e-coli etc. The Sawayra project team comprising are working on a low cost water filter, made of clay substrate with micropores andcreated by mixing rice husk or ground wheat and baking the pot in a kiln. Microfiltration pot with pores of about one micron in size and expected flow rate of two liters per hour filters all bacteria, protozoa, and suspended solids.

Sawayra’s vision is to foster local ecosystems where energy, water, growing produce and recycling waste come together in a sustainable fashion and solutions that ultimately lead to local manufacturing and supply chain infrastructure, creating jobs, raising the standard of living and providing our future generations a better and cleaner environment to live in. ★
