Forgiveness and mercy

Adult: When someone hurts you, are you more in-clined to be just or to be merciful?

Child: When have you forgiven someone who treat-ed you unfairly?

Graceless survival

He may have had the desk next to ours. She could have been assigned to the same shift we worked.

They were nice enough. But not terribly dependable. Yeah, we were there for the paycheck, sure. But we also took some pride in our work. We realized that our success depended on the success of the whole enterprise. So we focused on our doing our jobs well and helping others do their jobs well so the business would flourish and grow.

But not him. Not her.

Their focus was on themselves. They did exactly what they were contracted to do - no more, no less. They were competent, but not terribly invested. They followed the company employee policies to the letter. Clocked in ex-actly at nine, gone by 5:01.

If they were wronged or had a grievance, management heard about it immediately. Mid-level managers took care of it to keep peace and avoid distractions. If something went wrong, their first interest was not correcting the problem but making sure there was documentation on file shielding them from responsibility.

Beneath their superficial cordiality, they saw us, not as co-workers, but as obstacles to their own advancement. And when someone was promoted over them, they made life difficult for everyone.

The unforgiving servant of today's Gospel works in a lot of places. Every profession has their share of unforgiving servants. They are about survival - theirs. Their self-centered attitude makes a lot more work for all of us.

The great sin of the unforgiving servant in today's Gospel is his refusal or inability to realize the grace of God in his midst. He has work that provides for his family; his own debt has been forgiven by an understanding and compas-sionate boss - and, for the obtuse servant, that's all that matters. He possesses no sense of gratitude for the good extended to him; he cannot see that he is part of a world bigger than his own wants and needs. He reasons that the king's forgiving of his debt is something he is entitled to, that survival is the name of the game and he found a way to win. But to forgive as he has been forgiven - only a fool would do that. But that is the Kingdom of God that Jesus comes to reveal: a perspective of life that is built on gratitude for the gift of life itself, gratitude that compels us to generosity, justice, and, yes, forgiveness. May we possess the spirit of gratitude for all that we have been given - and forgiven - and may that spirit enable us to create God's Kingdom here and now, in which forgiveness is joyfully offered and humbly but confidently sought, mir-roring the mercy and forgiveness of God, the compassion-ate Father of us all.

Talk to kids about location sharing dangers

Many popular social media sites offer users the ability to tag or share their lo-cations whenever they post. Depending

on the site, this information can be shared with friends, followers, and other people who use the site, regardless of whether they are friends with the user or not. Location sharing is a tool that can be used by predators searching for potential victims. Parents and children need to have open discussions about providing information online, highlighting what is safe to share and when it is safe to do so. As a general rule, widespread location-sharing should be discouraged. For more information about how to help your children understand who can see what they post and share, request a copy of the VIR-TUS© online article “Technology Safety,” by emailing [email protected] or calling (213) 637-7227.

Our Holy Father Pope Francis has conferred the honor of Chaplain

of his Holiness, with the personal title of

Reverend Monsignor to Father Robert Milbauer.

Please join us in celebrating Monsignor Milbauer’s Investiture of Honor on September 24th in the hospitality pavilion

after the 9:00, 10:30, 12:00 Masses.

Here at St. John Baptist De Salle we strive to be a safe environment for our children. For this reason, please make sure that all children are accompanied by an adult when going to the rest room.

It is for their safety and protection.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY

Today, De Le Salle Church, along with parishes across the country, will celebrate Catechetical Sunday and

will focus on the theme "Living as Missionary Dis-ciples." Join us today at the 9:00am Mass for this celebration and “Rite of Commissioning” of our cat-echists who share in the evangelizing and teaching mission of the Church. Currently, more than half a million catechists serve in 19,000 Catholic parishes, missions, and schools across the country. They are instrumental in introducing more than four million children, youth and adults to the faith and traditions of the Church. As part of these celebrations, parents and guardians will be blessed for the important role that they play as witness to the Gospel and in hand-ing on the faith to the next generation. Each of us by virtue of our Baptism plays a role in handing on our Faith and being witness to the Gospel. If you are interested in participating in the Religious Education Ministry or other Parish Ministries please contact the SRE office at [email protected] or (818) 368-1514.

to be nature's antibiotics.

They not only help cleanse you internally, but vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage,

brussel sprouts, and cauliflower are considered a face lift for your brain!

So let's get smarter and be smarter by including more of these potent

helpers into our life. Remember you are what you eat!

FORGIVE OTHERS There are many kinds of alms the giving of which helps us to obtain pardon for our sins;

but none is greater than that by which we forgive from our heart a sin that someone

has committed against us. —St. Augustine

FORGIVENESS Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: “Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you?Resentment and anger are foul things, the first read-ing from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the commandments. As Saint Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord. Jesus’ parable in today’s Gospel reminds us of God’s compassion. The im-mense sin of humanity has been forgiven and strick-en from the record. We are to forgive others in the same way.
