the data you need and knowing where and how to get it.
• The four basic research strategies are: doing library research, doing online research, conducting interviews and conducting surveys.

STRATEGY• In doing LIBRARY RESEARCH, remember the following:– Move from general to specific– the more specific it is the better– Best ones for Primary Sources: Academic
Journals, Scholarly Books, Theses, Official Documents/Vertical Files
– For Background/Secondary Sources: Magazines, Reference materials, Newspapers, Encyclopedias

STRATEGY• TIP: If you choose to peruse through Wikipedia or other wiki sources, look to the bottom of the webpage and you’ll find the primary or more authoritative sources on the subject matter.
• The BEST sources are those produced AND REVIEWED by experts.

STRATEGY• INTERNET RESEARCH:
– The internet has an almost infinite amount of information, but not all of it (in fact, most of it) is quite unreliable
– Internet info is usually quantity over quality
– The best internet sources usually come from websites ending in .edu, .gov, or .org (unless it is a wiki)

STRATEGY• You may use online sources, such as wikis, to BEGIN building a background for your paper, but using it for analysis and defending your arguments is ill-advised.

STRATEGY• CONDUCTING INTERVIEWS:
– find an expert in your chosen field/area or someone constantly immersed in it
– he/she has to be knowledgeable, reliable & available

question must be brief, clear and focused.
• In other words, be direct to the point, do not use ambiguous (malabo) terms, and ask one question at a time.

interviewing people. (DUH?!)• Do this rapidly, accurately
and unobtrusively.• You may record it on paper,
on a video tape or on a digital device.

– This can show you a general pattern or trend from a certain group of individuals regarding your topic
– Using a survey in a HS paper is needlessly tiresome and often unreliable because of faulty design, so veer away from this for now

REMEMBER• One of the important aspects of a good interview question is clarity. We shouldn’t use unnecessarily complex or ambiguous terms that might make the experience more complicated than it needs to be.
