Don’t forget your mask!

From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto … Hello my friends, remember how united were we

Americans on that fateful day of 9-11-2001? Nineteen years later instead we are in a sad situation. There is a violent political campaign going on in our beloved country which is fueling a tidal wave of hatred between our two political parties, putting citizens against one another. Years of vitriolic hate has poisoned all of us! How can we obey Jesus’ command of love God and neighbors, which is the foundation of our Christian religion? Why don’t we forgive one another? Let’s listen not to the mass media, but to God’s word in this Sunday!

Sirach (27:30-28:7) shows God telling us, “Anger and wrath, these also are abominations, yet a sinner holds on to them. The vengeful will face the Lord’s vengeance, for he keeps a strict account of [a] their sins. Forgive your neighbor the wrong he has done, and then your sins will be pardoned when you pray. Does anyone harbor anger against another, and expect healing from the Lord?” And listen to the concluding sentence of Jesus (Mt 18:35) “So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart!”

God is ready always to forgive, so should we! If we do not forgive, our last day of life will come, and then God will not forgive us. As Sirach quotes God, “Remember your last days, set enmity aside, remember death and decay, and cease from sin!” The old monks used to say, “memento mori, ac nunquam peccabis” (remember death, and you’ll never sin). As you heard me say many times: “What this business of mine will be important for me in one hundred years?” Then you may ask yourself the same question.

Remember, “God is love, and only those who love live in God and God lives in them.” (1 John 4:16)

Forgiveness is that word that exemplifies the rule of conduct for us all, faithful lovers of Jesus. Through forgiveness, in the sacrament of Penance, we become glorious and sinless children of God, without any stain of sin and without restriction of times and places. Through forgiveness husband and wife accept one another with love. Through forgiveness we pray for our enemies, going into the great excess to feed them, when they’re starving, or heal them when sick or wounded as our U.S. soldiers did in so many wars. Through forgiveness we patiently endure people who are a pest to us. And Jesus forgives our sins every time (seventy times seven) and as soon as we ask!

The parable of Jesus is a warning to us: God could have had us die immediately after out first mortal sin, relegating us to eternal death. But God has forgiven us again and again, we cannot count even how many times. Two things are necessary: first, “ASK forgiveness with a contrite heart” and second, “FORGIVE from our heart all who have offended us.” This gospel is so magnificent! May we keep this infinite divine love in our hearts!

Let us repay then “Love” with love, by becoming one with Jesus, especially in Holy Communion, and because of Jesus, let us accept, forgive and love one another.

Happy Grandparent’s Day! I have a special favor to ask of you grandparents: pass the gift of our traditional Catholic faith to your grandchildren, who are growing up in a society which seems to be so hostile to God’s commandments! Be “apostles,” bearers of the good news of Jesus, and givers of good example of prayer, and loving hope to your grandchildren. Many of you

dear grandparents have studied under our good sisters and brothers in Catholic schools, a great grace not offered to some of your grandchildren. Also, some of your children did go through the historic period in our Church (and mankind), full of the most dizzying and frightening changes of events and crisis, which has taken a toll on the faith of many. You, dear grandparents, have weathered such drastic changes and have

survived with your faith intact. Pass such faith on to your heirs, and pray for them so that they will be able to face the uncertain future with the strength that comes from the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus.

This week is full of great memorials! Monday is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, commemorating the discover of the Lord’s cross by the mother of Roman emperor Constantine, St. Helena (Aug. 18, 320).

In Jerusalem, Constantine erected a round church, the Anastasis, above the empty grave of Jesus, and a basilica, the Martyrium; in the square between the two churches, a shrine, Calvarium, marking the place of the crucifixion. Dedicated in 335, they were destroyed by the Persians in 614. The two churches were rebuilt by Patriarch Modestus of Jerusalem c. 626, but were later destroyed by the Muslims in 1009. The present church of the Holy Sepulcher was dedicated in 1139.

Tuesday is the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, in remembrance of the traditional seven sorrows of Jesus’ mother: the presentation of Jesus in the Temple, the flight into Egypt, Jesus being lost in Jerusalem, the meeting of Mary and Jesus on the way to Calvary, the crucifixion, the taking down of Jesus’ body from the cross, and his burial.

Saturday is the memorial of St. Januarius, Bishop and Martyr. He was Bishop of Pozzuoli and martyred in 305 under Roman Emperor Diocletian. As early as 1389 his blood that was collected by his companions in a sealed glass vial, liquified in Naples Cathedral. This phenomenon has defied any scientific explanation.

Charitable Remainder Trust?

If you want a portion of your estate to eventually go to St. Martha, but you also want to provide income for one or more surviving loved ones, you can establish a charitable remainder trust through your will. The trust pays income to your designated beneficiaries for a set period of time, usually the duration of their lives. At the death of the designated beneficiaries, the remaining principal is then distributed to St. Martha. This type is trust is an excellent way to provide for family members for the remainder of their lives, and then directing a portion of your remaining estate to St. Martha.
