He teaches beginning and intermediate/advanced guitar with guitar ensemble. He also teaches basics of music, which involves music theory for nonmusicians. Randy enjoys teaching at Saddleback, staƟng that the music faculty are friendly and work well together, which makes for a great environment for the students. His aspiraƟons for his students are that they get enthusiasƟc enough to conƟnue to study guitar in order to become a professional musician and eventually teach. Randy feels it is important to move the study of music along from teacher to student. According to him, his own aspiraƟons have changed over the past 15 years to where he is now returning to performing opportuniƟes. He has been focusing so much on teaching that he is excited now to perform again. Randy’s academic credenƟals include degrees in Music from UC Berkeley and UC San Diego. His Ph.D. dissertaƟon was based on a revision of the guitar works of Joaquin Rodrigo, which he undertook while working closely with Maestro Rodrigo at his home in Madrid. The study was sponsored by a grant to promote cultural cooperaƟon between Spain's Ministry of Culture and U.S. UniversiƟes, and included special concerts and lectures on the music of Joaquín Rodrigo. As a touring arƟst for the California Arts Council, Randy is one of the most sought aŌer performers of his generaƟon, both at home and abroad. As recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician he has won acclaim for his "rich tone", "powerful technique", "graceful interpretaƟons" and "sensiƟve musicianship.” His internaƟonal following has been gained through performances in the USA, Europe, Canada, and the South Pacic with appearances in major music fesƟvals, including the Edinburgh FesƟval Fringe, Aspen Music FesƟval, Salzburg Mozart FesƟval, the Malaga Music FesƟ‐ val, the Northwest Guitar FesƟval, and New Zealand's Summer FesƟvals. To see Randy in acƟon, Ɵckets are now on sale for his Saddleback classical guitar performance on Saturday, September 19 th at 7:30 p.m. in the McKinney Theatre. He will be playing lesser known works of Joaquín Rodrigo, who wrote the Concerto de Aranjuez for guitar and orchestra. Randy will perform a 30minute set of the Spanish composer, and aŌer a brief intermission, he will perform the music of Leo Brouwer, Cuba’s most famous composer. Randy has been the director of two highly successful Guitar FoundaƟon of America InternaƟonal FesƟvals and CompeƟƟons. In 1997 "The European TradiƟon" honored Celedonio Romero and the 2001 GFA FesƟval "Voices of the Guitar ~ Ancient and Modern" was held in memory of Maestro Rodrigo. A San Clemente resident, Randy enjoys a long list of outdoor hobbies. An avid surfer, he is a “goofy foot” and rides a longboard as well as a sh shortboard. He also likes to ride motorcycles and owns two Triumphs. One is old style similar to the one Steve McQueen rode in The Great Escape, and the other is a street bike that he rides on long trips. His other hobbies include camping, swimming and travelling. Having already been all through Europe and South America during his early internaƟonal performance tours, he is now more into exoƟc travel such as China, Vietnam, Cuba and Bali. His immediate family includes his dog, Molly and cat, Simba. Molly, a golden retriever, actually loves cats. According to Randy, cats love Molly too and visit her regularly, sneaking through the backyard fence. The one word that best describes Randy is opƟmisƟc, and he is certainly opƟmisƟc that audiences will enjoy his classical guitar concert on September 19th so get your Ɵckets today!
