F.L.Smidth is the leading supplier of separa-tors to the world’s cement industry, provid-ing various types of high-efficiency separa-tors for a wide range of applications.Decades of know-how in high-efficiencyseparation enables F.L.Smidth to supply themost suitable separator for almost anyapplication. The SEPAX concept – intro-duced with the original SEPAX separatorand later adopted for separators of deriveddesign - has proved highly successful in thecement industry.

Low initial costsThe simple and space-saving design of theSEPAX makes it an economical investment. The separator is fitted within a self-support-ing shell structure, and the entire separatorunit with cyclones is supported by one ring-shaped support only. Reducer and motorare placed in line with the bearing housing, forming a compact and rigid drive-line unit. Finally, the SEPAX has one feed point placedat a low level, minimising the height of theseparator feed elevator and simplifying thelayout.

The SEPAX top seal principle:The air flow across the rotor seal area (1) is limited by narrow gaps (2)Reduced air flow across the rotor top, fitted with deflector wings (3), practically eliminates passage of coarse material to the fines outlet (4)Coarse material that is inclined to pass in a ballistic curve (5) across the rotor is intercepted by the chromium carbide protected seal ring (6)

The SEPAX top seal principle:The air flow across rotor (1) is limited by narrow gaps (2)Reduced air flow across the rotor top, fitted with deflector wings (3), practically eliminates passage of coarse material to the fines outlet (4)Coarse material that is inclined to pass in a ballistic curve (5) across the rotor is intercepted by the chromium carbide protected seal ring (6)

Flexible and versatileThe SEPAX is designed to be equipped withdrives ranging from low power drives forraw grinding to powerful drives for thefinest grinding while still utilising the fulldesign air flow.

This ensures maximum efficiency regard-less of the end product quality specified.

The SEPAX can be equipped with separa-tor-supported cyclones or stand-alonecyclones for the collection of fines.

The feed concept is based on the materialbeing suspended in the vertical air flowthrough the riser duct. This makes theSEPAX highly adaptable to various rawgrinding applications. Consequently, theseparator can be integrated into the millventing system, in the case of fully or semiair-swept mills, or installed on top of a flashdryer that forms the riser duct leading up tothe SEPAX.

Low operating costsThe SEPAX is very efficient in operation andcuts specific energy consumption to a mini-mum, while maintaining maximum output.A highly effective system for removal ofworn grinding media from the mill dis-charge material means less clogging ofdiaphragms. This optimises mill performanceand enables long-term continuous operation.

Low maintenance costsThe SEPAX is designed to be easily service-able. Worn and broken grinding media arenot recycled, which helps to save mainte-nance work on the mill grate plates. Theremoval of nibs from the separator feedreduces the wear on critical separator parts.Easily accessible and serviceable wear pro-tection is fitted where appropriate and thebearing unit can easily be replaced.

Tromp curve

The tromp curve indicating the per-centage of feed rejected in relationto particle size has the followingcharacteristics:The cut size, x50, expresses the exactparticle size at which the quantitiesof fine and coarse material are equal. The by-pass value, , expresses theproportion of separator feed thatpasses through the separatorunprocessed and leaves it as coarsematerial. The sharpness factor, = d25/d75,expresses the inclination of theTromp curve and thus the sharpnessof the separation.

Densit Wearcast 2000The material is a 30 mm thick cementbound composition containing 55% hard (9 Mohs) grains of corundum (Al2O3).Densit Wearcast is easy to install and repair. It has been tested to outlast basalt by afactor of 1.3 when exposed to sandblastingat various inclinations.

Hardox 400 This is a world-known, abrasion resistant, weldable steel plate, which is through-hardened to more than 360 HB and isrecognised for its superior abrasion resist-ance properties.

Chromium compound wear plate

This material is a mild steel plate with athickness of 4 to 8 mm on to which a 4 - 5 mm layer of hardfacing is welded. Thehardfacing consists of primary chromiumcarbides in a eutectic matrix with eutecticchromium carbides. The hardness of thematrix reaches 600-750 HV, the grains 1400HV. The temperature limit is 400 deg C.

High carbon steelThis is a low cost and highly versatile mate-rial which is used in places where moderatewear occurs.
