“Bot” or “Spider”:  Software applications or bits of

code that run automated tasks.

Used for “spidering” web pages

by Google.

“Index”:  Google’s directory of websites and

web pages.

“Organic”:  Non-paid listings in a search

engine results page.

“Rankings”:  The hierarchy of search results.

Usually referred to with a numeric

value, e.g. “Our site ranks

second.”

“On Site” and “Off Site”:  On site refers to content or actions

taken on your own website. Off

site refers to any third party site or

platform.

“Links” or “Hyperlinks”:  The backbone of the web, links are

a piece of ‘clickable’ code that

refers or sends a user or bot to a

different web page.

“Link Building”:  The process of publishing,

marketing or promoting your site

for the purpose of inducing other

people to create links to your site.

“Tag”:  A small bit of code or text used to

label or categorize something on a

web page.

“Content”:  Any form of media or information

published on the web. Includes

articles, blogs, images, video, and

more.

“URL”:  “Uniform Resource Locator”, or a

character string that refers to an

internet address.

“Search Volume”: The number of searches

performed on a unique keyword of

a period of time.
