He toured with bands like Aerosmith and Kiss in the 1970’s and his life was what he calls, a “wild ride.” After 15 years in the entertainment business, he and his wife Pat settled down and opened amusement parks in Virginia Beach and on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. But despite the excitement of his life, there was a dark side to it. Jody experienced the pain of watching his mother suffer and ultimately pass away from kidney disease. A few years ago, Jody started to feel tired and less energetic. Even though he knew the symptoms that his mother had endured, Jody did not want to attribute his exhaustion to the same disease. He tried his hardest to keep his fatigue hidden and to “tough it out.” Finally, despite his efforts, Pat noticed that something was very wrong. In March of 2013, she begged Jody to go to the doctor for blood work and thankfully he listened. After reviewing his lab results, the doctor sent him immediately to the ER. His blood toxin levels were so high, his body would very soon shut down completely without dialysis. When the diagnosis of kidney failure was given to him, Jody’s breath was knocked out of him. He felt he was living through his mother’s ordeal all over again. Doctors at the hospital were using the words, “dialysis,” “kidney transplant,” and “unknown future.” His life became surreal, as options for a kidney transplant were discussed. Jody and his family tried to remain hopeful but knew that they had to be practical too. He knew from research- ing the disease that there was only a 1-in-100,000 chance that his wife would be a match. The Cadwell Family: Katie, Pat, Evan and Jody

Jody Cadwell has led a life that many of us have only dreamed of.

He knew from research-ing the disease that there was only a 1-in-100,000 chance that his wife would be a match.

The Cadwell Family: Katie, Pat, Evan and Jody

Beating the Odds

‑2‑

Despite such slim odds, Pat was a perfect match. Then things happened very quickly. The family pulled together and Evan, their son, stepped up to run the entire family business. Meanwhile Katie, their younger daughter, came home from college to serve as the go-between for both parents in the hospital. Through these trying times, the family became even closer and realized how valuable life is.

Jody learned other lessons too. He learned that denial is never an answer, and that toughing it out is not the best health strategy. He learned to hold his family closer to his heart. Pat, Evan and Katie are the new rockstars in Jody’s world. They are the ones who gave him everything, including his chance for a normal life. Jody knows that he was lucky enough to be given a new lease on life and never forgets those who are on dialysis or waiting for a transplant. According to the National Kidney Foundation, more than 122,000 people are on the transplant list, and 14 of them die each day waiting for donated organs that never come. Sadly, even after many patients receive life-saving transplants, they cannot afford the medica-tions to keep their new organs working. This is where you can help. Even the smallest donation to the Sentara Kidney Transplant Fund may mean the difference between life and death, and between hope and despair.

Jody makes it a point to tell everyone he can that you can’t avoid the truth when it comes to your health. He is emphatic in encouraging others to see their doctor to ensure that their kidneys are functioning properly. He also gives other patients hope for a happier future through his example. He knows how important it is to raise awareness and support for the treatment of kidney disease, and he advocates for others to join with him to make a difference in someone’s life afflicted with this terrible disease.

The Treasure of Mobile Mealsby Meril Amdursky

Tucked away at Naval Station Norfolk is a little chapel which serves as the home for The Treasure Shop. It is a hidden gem where military personnel can donate gently used uniforms and many other household items to support the mission of giving back. Or, they can offer to sell goods on consignment which also provides support for the cause. This little engine that could was the brainchild of several admirals’ wives back in the 1970’s who wanted to make a difference in the community. The operation is homespun. There is no website, the shop is almost completely staffed by 30 volunteers and it is only open for the months of September through May each year as its volunteers enjoy a summer break. A best kept secret in Hampton Roads, The Treasure Shop has continued its tradition of serving the area’s most vulnerable, through annual donations to local charities made from their profits

Sentara Mobile Meals has been a fortunate beneficiary of this generosity over the years and the philanthropy has provided for many needy individuals, many of whom served our country through the mili-tary. One very special Mobile Meals recipient and World War II veteran shared how he welcomed the nutri-tious meals and the friendly smiles from volunteers every week. You can learn more about Leroy’s journey to remain in his own home after losing his wife by visiting www.sentara.com/foundation and click on Patient Stories.

The Treasure Shop leadership includes several committed volunteers including Dee Hunt with 34 years and Dorcas Nelson with 29 years of service at the shop. To prepare for the September opening, the volunteers spend a very busy week tagging and displaying the thousands of donated and consigned items. But all their hard work pays off. You too can help someone in need by finding “that perfect ... gift, jewelry piece, orhousehold item.” It’s a treasure hunt that is truly rewarding.

MemoriesBy Reneé Duval Fairchild

How important are your memories?

Imagine this:

You are at home in your kitchen, just like any other morning; then suddenly the room grows dark. The next thing you remember is waking up in the hospital with no idea how you got there. You are disoriented, you can’t recall the names of your husband or children, and you are terrified. I recently met a woman who doesnot need to imagine this – she lived it.

Sharon Martin was a teacher in the Virginia Beach Public School System for over 15 years. A natural leader and self-described “go-getter,” she served on many nonprofit organization boards, and in her spare time, sheloved to draw and paint. On Memorial Day 2010, her whole life changed in an instant. “I remember I felt funny, my head hurt and then it all went dark.” She looks at Bill, a physician and her husband of 40 years to help her fill in the details she cannot recollect from that da .

Bill shared “Sharon had an aneurysm in her brain. Following six weeks in intensive care, she was moved to a long term care facility. Sharon was in and out of the hospital and had a procedure to assist with the manage-ment of the aneurism.”

Even when Sharon’s physical limitations were fully addressed by her doctors, her short term memory was severely diminished. Sharon chimes in “I remember all the details of experiences from 30 years ago. But I have a hard time remembering simple things from today. Like if I have already taken a shower or brushed my teeth. Tracy has helped me with that, through music and other tools.”

Tracy Bowdish is the neurologic music therapist for the Sentara Music & Medicine Center, located in the Sentara Heart Hospital. Tracy explains that with cases of memory loss, it is very helpful for an individual to use rhythm and music to complete their daily activities. For example, patients are taught to use a favorite song and substitute the lyrics with pertinent information. A patient can insert anniversary and birth dates as a part of the tune they create. A good example is how children learn the ABC’s to that simple melody we all know.

Sharon explains how this aspect of her therapy works for her on a more personal level. She chose to insert the dates of her husband and son’s birthdays in the melody of “Puff the Magic Dragon” because remembering that tune comes easily to her. Sharon says “Tracy put their birthdates in the song, so I sing it and I won’t forget.” Right away she sings the words to us to show how it works. “I can also sing why I am going to another room in the house, so I won’t forget once I get there. If I need to get my glasses from the bedroom, I sing it all the way there”.

Sharon’s sense of humor shines through as she laughs easily with us and her family. She tells us that she is sure that her family is getting tired of her singing all the time. She says, “Before starting music therapy a year ago, I would get angry and frustrated when I could not remember if I brushed my teeth or took a shower. But now I know I can recall these things on my own, and not have to bother Bill at work all day long”.

Sharon states enthusiastically, “I am making a memory book. Creating New Memories is the title.” Tracy explains that this will allow Sharon to write down current meaningful experiences like celebrating her son’s birthday and her 40th wedding anniversary. “Tracy and I worked on a song for my son Robert’s birthday. He said it was the best birthday present he has ever received. I also made a CD for Bill’s birthday and our anni-versary and narrated my fondest memories in between the songs”. Sharon will continue to use music to reduce anxiety, trigger emotional memories, and assist in keeping track of her day to day routine.

Sharon goes on to say, “I am living proof that music therapy can change someone’s life. We are so lucky to have this program right here. I think there must be so many other people who would benefit. But they may not be able toafford it, since insurance coverage is limited for this type of cognitive therapy. A donor who contributes to this program can absolutely know that you are changing someone’s life, like mine. Through music, I have been given back my life, my family and all the memories yet to be made.”

Donating to the Sentara Music & Medicine Center allows those in need to undergo treatments, like music therapy, which assist in their recovery. To learn more or make a donation, visit us at www.sentara.com/foundation or call us at 757-455-7976.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN HAMPTON ROADS?:Except for the military and college and law school at William and Mary, I’ve lived in Norfolk my whole life. Actually, I’ve lived and worked that whole time within two miles of where I was born in Norfolk. Even my father and mother were born in Norfolk in 1894 and 1898. My father and a friend owned a haberdashery in the 1920’s called “Prince and Callahan” on Commercial Place in downtown.TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY HISTORY AND HOW YOU LANDED HEREMy paternal grandparents came from Ireland in the mid 1800’s around the time of the potato famine, so they were well aware of what it meant to be destitute. After the Great Depression here, my parents had so very little and we were barely able to make ends meet, but I never knew it as a child. Perhaps this experience has helped me understand that whatever our station in life, it is a responsibility to help others in need. For me, giving is faith based and I have found great comfort in my religious teachings. As Saint Basil the Great said: “The riches you have received from God are meant to remedy after human misery, those riches you have hoarded are the riches of the poor.” Many of my later years I have tried to do the best I could to help others.WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER INTERESTS?I read quite a bit and am a baseball fan. I have followed the New York Yankees since I was a child. During that time, the Norfolk Tars, a class B league, was one of their minor league affiliates

TELL US ABOUT A RECENT EXPERIENCE AT SENTARA:On a recent visit to Orlando with my son and grandson, I had a fall and went to the emergency room there. After a day, I was discharged and headed back home. I didn’t feel like myself and my doctor suggested that I go to the ER at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. I ended up spending two days there and I must commend the gracious and professional services of all the nurses and staff who served me. While no one wishes to go to the hospital, experiencing a kind and caring demeanor from nurses, doctors and other staff makes recovery much easier.WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SUPPORT SENTARA WITH A CONTRIBUTION?Back in 2010, I read about the Nightingale in the newspaper and thought that this was a very important service to provide lifesaving care in Hampton Roads. I wanted to ensure this program would continue in the future. This past April, I spent some time in the hospital for a chronic illness and was given the kind of attention that made my stay easier and I’m sure it helped in my recovery.WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE?As I age, healthcare has become more important in my daily life. My hope is that my children and grandkids will have access to the highest level of care. Having top notch nurses and doctors who continue to search for the best way to deliver care is clearly a Sentara expectation. We all benefit from this commitment

Changing the Face of MedicineBy Ryan Livingston

Dr. Gary Yates is a different kind of doctor. When you think of healthcare professionals, you may immediately think of your pediatrician who took care of your child, your father’s heart surgeon, your mother’s physical therapist, or any number of nurses who have positively affected your life. However, it’s not often we think about the healthcare professionals who make us safer and improve our quality of life by fixing systemicproblems in the healthcare system. Dr. Yates is one of those healthcare professionals. He is committed to giving back to the community whether that means working on an Indian reservation on completion of his residency training, working tirelessly to reduce medical errors in hospitals across the country, advocating for more widespread use of advance directives education, or supporting the Virginia Beach Hospice House through the Sentara Foundation – Hampton Roads.

As former Chief Medical Officer for Sentara Healthcare, one of D . Yates primary goals was to improve patient safety. Best practices were unfortunately lacking in the healthcare community, so his col-leagues and he were forced to turn to other industries. Their search led to two nuclear engineers who were beginning to work in healthcare to improve patient safety. They were recruited to help reduce patient harm by changing the processes and culture of the healthcare system. The program Dr. Yates and his colleagues came up with helped Sentara Healthcare reduce its Serious Safety Event rate by 80% since 2003. As President of HPI (Healthcare Performance Improvement), a subsidiary of Sentara Healthcare, Dr. Yates has been part of a team that has helped hundreds of other hospitals around the country do the same thing.

In addition to reducing patient harm, he has also been committed to changing the healthcare industry to better align with the values of patients and their families. Dr. Yates commented, “We used to think about medical care as what you do in the hospital and in the doctor’s office. When you think about it fromthe point of view of the patient and their family, it spans everything from how they want to live their life to how they want to think about and better understand their end-of-life choices. As healthcare providers and as a system, working to provide care in accordance with their wishes is the definition of good care.” According to Dr. Yates, the Sentara Hospice House fits this defi -tion. Many people don’t want to go through the end-of-life process in a hospital. However, sometimes the home setting just won’t work for patients who need more intensive care services. Historically, our com-munity and the country as a whole has been lacking in resources and services for end-of-life. Fortunately, Dr. Yates and several colleagues recognized the gap in services and fought for the implementation of the firsthospice house on the south side of Hampton Roads helps provide an important option for this group.

In addition to being a true champion for transforming healthcare Dr. Yates supports the Sentara Foundation – Hampton Roads both as a donor and as an advocate. His support for the Hospice House helps to provide a more comfortable and caring environment for patients who are unable to spend their finalhours in their own home. Dr. Yates is truly one of the unsung heroes of community health and improvements to end-of-life care in Hampton Roads.
