Introduction:
We want to make your theater experience as enjoyable and memorable
as possible. This guide has been created so that families attending the
sensory friendly production of Shadow Play can familiarize themselves
with the show and its characters as well as the technical elements of the
production.
We also have a pre-visit guide for Samueli Theater available at
www.scfta.org/sensoryfriendly.
The performance is 40 minutes long. There is no intermission but you
can leave at any time and come back in.
Some light will remain on in the theater throughout the show so that you
can move around, exit and enter as needed.
We hope you have a great time at the performance!
About the Show:
Have you ever wondered what happens to your shadow when you go to
sleep? It turns out that some shadows are more mischievous than
others. Soon after moving into his new home, Flash discovers that his
shadow has moving plans of his own. Follow Flash on a quest to bring his
shadow home in this playful production that utilizes stunning animation,
video production and an original score to create an exciting multi-media
experience.
Notes on the Content:
While he may say a few words throughout the performance, the actor will
use mainly nonverbal communication including waving, mouthing,
gesturing, making sound effects and miming. Additionally, the actor will
interact with the audience, asking for their reaction and inviting them to
participate by clapping or vocalizing.

Flash opens the cardboard freezer and a light turns on creating his
shadow on the projector screen. Flash plays with his shadow.
Flash hears the sound of dance music coming from a cardboard box. He
opens it and lights flash from the box and the music becomes loud. He
closes it quickly and the music and lights stop.

Through the window we see a rocket ship travelling to the moon. Flash
uses a cardboard telescope to look closer and sees that his shadow has
landed on the moon.
Flash tries a few different ways to get to the moon (drawing a ladder,
flapping his arms) and then realizes he can enter the world of the
projector screen.

Flash is able to make himself bigger or small in this world by moving
forward (bigger) and backward (smaller). Flash brings the cardboard
rocket ship with him into the projector screen world.
Flash moves the rocket ship forward to make it bigger and then moves
backwards so he is small enough to fit in the rocket ship and takes off
for the moon.

Flash lands on the moon and uses a flashlight to look for his shadow,
who is hiding from him.
Flash finds his shadow who mimes grabbing a star from the sky and they
pretend to throw it back and forth (the star is represented by a spotlight).

Flash’s shadow gets the music box and opens it. Dance music plays and
Flash’s shadow dances.
Flash leaves in his rocket ship to go back to earth. The music box breaks
and Flash’s shadow tries to play, but he is lonely. Back on earth, Flash
uses a cardboard iPad to look at pictures of him and his shadow. The
pictures he is looking at appear on the projector screen.
