Introduction:

We want to make your theater experience as enjoyable and memorable

as possible. This guide has been created so that families attending the

sensory friendly production of Shadow Play can familiarize themselves

with the show and its characters as well as the technical elements of the

production.

We also have a pre-visit guide for Samueli Theater available at

www.scfta.org/sensoryfriendly.

The performance is 40 minutes long. There is no intermission but you

can leave at any time and come back in.

Some light will remain on in the theater throughout the show so that you

can move around, exit and enter as needed.

We hope you have a great time at the performance!

About the Show:

Have you ever wondered what happens to your shadow when you go to

sleep? It turns out that some shadows are more mischievous than

others. Soon after moving into his new home, Flash discovers that his

shadow has moving plans of his own. Follow Flash on a quest to bring his

shadow home in this playful production that utilizes stunning animation,

video production and an original score to create an exciting multi-media

experience.

Notes on the Content:

While he may say a few words throughout the performance, the actor will

use mainly nonverbal communication including waving, mouthing,

gesturing, making sound effects and miming. Additionally, the actor will

interact with the audience, asking for their reaction and inviting them to

participate by clapping or vocalizing.

There will be a brief announcement just before the performance begins.

Meet the Cast/Characters:

There is one actor in this show.

The actor’s name is Drew Petersen. Here is what he looks like:

Drew Petersen plays the character of Flash. Here is what Drew looks like

dressed as Flash:

Set:

The set and props are all made of cardboard and bubble wrap. The

cardboard pieces are moved around to create different objects

throughout the performance. There is also a large projector screen for

video.

Lighting:

There are a few lighting changes during the peformance as follows:

• There are a few times when the lights become dimmer (like when

Flash goes to bed).

• Whenever flash opens the cardboard box with the music note on it,

colored lights flash. This happens a few times during the

performance, including a longer dance party at the end of the

performance.

• There is a flashlight that is used by the actor and a spotlight is

used to represent a star.

Sound:

The performance includes original music throughout as well as several

sound effects including:

• Dance music

• Teeth brushing

• Pencil drawing and

sharpening

• Rocket ship taking off a

landing

• Lamp turning on and off

• Wind

• Door and curtains opening

• Television sounds

• Toilet flushing

• Running water

Video:

There is a large projector screen that will have video projections on it

throughout the performance. Flash’s shadow is created both by light and

by video and Flash himself will appear both in person and in the video.

Alsio, video is briefly projected onto a cardboard couch when Flash

watches TV.

Show Walkthrough:

Flash enters the stage and arranges the cardboard boxes into furniture,

such as a couch, a lamp, a desk and a refrigerator.

Flash opens the cardboard freezer and a light turns on creating his

shadow on the projector screen. Flash plays with his shadow.

Flash hears the sound of dance music coming from a cardboard box. He

opens it and lights flash from the box and the music becomes loud. He

closes it quickly and the music and lights stop.

Flash makes drawing gestures towards the projection screen and picture

frames and a window appear on the screen.

Flash mimes his bedtime routine using cardboard as: a toilet, sink,

toothbrush and toothpaste.

Flash uses a cardboard box as a TV and we see the images he is

watching projected onto the cardboard couch.

Flash prepares his room for bed by turning off the lamp (lights become

dimmer) and opening the curtains. His shadow appears on the projector

screen.

Flash goes to sleep. While he sleeps, his shadow plays and wakes Flash

up.

His shadow runs away and Flash chases him.

Through the window we see a rocket ship travelling to the moon. Flash

uses a cardboard telescope to look closer and sees that his shadow has

landed on the moon.

Flash tries a few different ways to get to the moon (drawing a ladder,

flapping his arms) and then realizes he can enter the world of the

projector screen.

Flash is able to make himself bigger or small in this world by moving

forward (bigger) and backward (smaller). Flash brings the cardboard

rocket ship with him into the projector screen world.

Flash moves the rocket ship forward to make it bigger and then moves

backwards so he is small enough to fit in the rocket ship and takes off

for the moon.

Flash lands on the moon and uses a flashlight to look for his shadow,

who is hiding from him.

Flash finds his shadow who mimes grabbing a star from the sky and they

pretend to throw it back and forth (the star is represented by a spotlight).

Flash’s shadow gets the music box and opens it. Dance music plays and

Flash’s shadow dances.

Flash leaves in his rocket ship to go back to earth. The music box breaks

and Flash’s shadow tries to play, but he is lonely. Back on earth, Flash

uses a cardboard iPad to look at pictures of him and his shadow. The

pictures he is looking at appear on the projector screen.

Flash and his shadow play together and then go to sleep.

While his shadow is sleeping, Flash gets up and opens the music box.

Lights flash and dance music plays. Flash’s shadow wakes up.

Flash and his shadow have a dance party.

Flash and his shadow bow and leave the stage with their rocket ships.

We see a rocket ship take off for the moon on the projector screen.
