The SENSIT® HXG-2 instrument is factory cali-brated for methane in air. The alarm willindicate when the gas concentration at thesensor approaches the Alarm Set Point. TheAlarm Set Point is adjustable by the user forany gas concentration within the range of 0%to 40% of the lower explosive limit. The alarmresponse in the presence of any other gaswill be different.

SENSIT® HXG-2

The SENSIT® HXG-2 instrument is an ad-vanced state-of-the-art leak detector capableof detecting many combustible, noncombus-tible and toxic gases.

The SENSIT® HXG-2 solid-state sensor issensitive to most combustible and/or toxicgases. A partial list of these gases is:Acetone, Alcohol, Ammonia, Steam, CarbonMonoxide*, Butane, Gasoline, Jet Fuel, Hy-drogen Sulfide, Smoke, Industrial Solvents,Methane, Lacquer Thinners, Naphtha, Pro-pane, Natural Gas.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This instrument cannot be used for findinglow level carbon monoxide leaks in furnacesor in the home. Order a Heat Exchanger TestKit accessory for testing furnace heatexchangers.

CAUTION: To verify the operation of thisinstrument it is necessary to apply com-bustible gas to the sensor head. The tickshould increase and alarms may sound. Toverify accuracy calibration must be per-formed.

A calibration kit complete with regulator, cali-bration gas, calibration cup and easy to useinstructions is available from your distributoror J And N Enterprises, Inc.

CALIBRATION ADJUSTMENTTo confirm the original factory calibrated alarmset point of 0.5% methane (10% LEL meth-ane) use calibration kit part #S0157-1 for thefollowing proceedures.

1. Turn on the unit in a gas free environmentfor a 10 minute warm up.2. Attach the regulator to the calibration gascylinder (0.5% methane). Attach the calibra-tion adapter to the regulator, gas flow startsautomatically. Immediately insert the sensorinto the calibration adapter.3. If necessary, adjust the alarm set knobslowly until the red alarm light and alarm toneactivate.4. Disconnect the calibration adapter from theregulator to conserve gas.

OPERATING TIPS1. Turn the instrument on in a noncontami-nated atmosphere. The instrument will gothrough a warm-up process.

2. During warm-up it is normal but not re-quired that the ticking sound increases andthe alarm indicates for a short time. Whilethe instrument is warming up the tick rate willslowly decrease until it becomes steady. Thealarm will also stop indicating as the instru-ment completes warm-up. The time requiredfor this will vary depending on the duration oftime since the instrument was last used.

CAUTION: If the instrument is in an areawhere detectable gases are present, thealarm may not stop.3. Once warm-up is complete adjust the ”TickAdjust” control to establish a slow uniformtick rate. Only after the tick rate remains steadyis the instrument ready for calibrated use. Toidentify the presence of gas vapors or leakslisten for any change in the tick rate. If the tickrate increases, the instrument has detectedthe presence or location of a leak. As thelevel of gas increases the tick rate will in-crease accordingly. If the alarm is indicating, the level of gas is near or above 0.5% gas orapproximately at a minimum of 10% of LELmethane. This indicates a potentially haz-ardous atmosphere. When the instrumentalarms a flashing red light will appear and anaudible warbling tone will sound. 4

6

If the SENSIT® HXG-2 green ready light failsto operate or if it blinks and the audio doesnot work, the batteries need replacement.Depress the latch using a coin and slide thebattery compartment cover off. Replace thebatteries with 3 fresh “C” alkaline batteries.

NOTE: When replacing batteries observe po-larity markings in the battery compartment. Afresh set of alkaline batteries should operatethe unit for approximately 30 hours.

4. To pinpoint a leak source it may be neces-sary to readjust the tick rate. The “NullableTick Rate” feature of the HXG-2 allows therate to be slowed and reestablished even inhigh gas concentrations. By turning the tickadjust counterclockwise and reestablishinga slow tick rate as needed the HXG-2 will con-tinually identify higher levels of gas therebylocating the leak source. Remember, an in-crease in the tick rate means you are gettingcloser while a decrease means you are mov-ing further away from the leak source.

5. To continue searching for a leak while thealarm is sounding, you may choose to de-press the “Quiet Alarm” button on the back ofthe instrument. This will silence the audibleportion of the alarm and allow the user to lis-ten to the tick rate pattern. The visual redflashing light will still be seen when the in-strument is alarming even if the “Quiet Alarm”button is used. You will note that the tick rateis independent of the alarm which is calibratedto the appropriate gas concentration.

6. The earphone can be plugged into the unitif there is high background noise or the op-erator does not want to disturb other people. The speaker is disabled by inserting the ear-phone.

OPERATING TIPS continuedOPERATING TIPS continued7. If the green light flashes or does not illumi-nate this is an indication that the batteriesneed replacement.

8. The unit will respond to some leak findingsolutions (soap). Use your SENSIT® HXG-2instrument first.

9. If the sensor is overexposed to somegases, the unit may take an extended periodof time to return to calibrated ready condition.

10. To increase battery life turn the unit to “OFF”when not in use.
