From the Desk of the Executive Coordinator ………. It’s hard to believe that another year has almost passed. Does time really pass faster as we get older? Sometimes it feels that way. But as we move into the busy ‘ hustle and bustle’ time of the year, let us not forget the memories of the good times we had this past year. The staff of Ottawa County Senior Resources wishes you the best this holiday season. We hope you enjoy your family, friends and the good times you will have during this festive time. Count your blessings and cherish the times together. And don’t forget, we look forward to seeing you at our county functions and senior centers as we move to 2014! Thanks for being a part of our Senior Resources Family! -

DECEMBER! The word conjures up memories of new clothes, new toys, new bikes and a host of smells that just make you want to melt. The Elmore Golden Oldies have already begun the Christmas Season by holding a very suc-cessful bake sale at Miller’s in Genoa, in November with the proceeds going to the Holiday Bureau to assist with Christmas gifts.
Genoa will also hold a bake sale at Miller’s New Market in Genoa on Saturday, December 14th! Come on out and get some Christmas baked goods! The proceeds will go to assist a family with Christmas this year, too! Elmore also helps with the “Secret Santa Shoppe” at Woodmore Ele-
mentary each year. This year the Santa Shop will be open on December 4th. The Santa Shop gives kids an opportunity to shop for their families for gifts they can afford. The Elmore Gold-en Oldies have a table of small homemade crafts, priced right for little pocketbooks! This year we even have a few handmade wooden cars and trucks, made by Herb Katko and decorated by Winnie Chasteen. Carol Weihrouch made some adorable Mice Magnets that will grace some refrigerators before the Holidays are over. Also, the perennial favorites, “Boxes of Kisses” and “Cocoa Mugs” will be sold. Looking ahead, plans are being laid for Genoa to host a Card Party and a Veterans Picnic next spring and summer. More details as they be-come available.
In the meantime, have a glorious Holiday Season. Remember the reason for the season and pray for those who won’t be able to spend time with their families this year.
Blessings of the Season for all of you from, Genoa Senior Center & Elmore Golden Oldies

SITE MANAGER KIM SPENCER OAK HARBOR SENIOR CENTER- 419-898-2800
We are in December already which means Christmas is right around the corner and my little ones are excited. We had our Christmas tree up the 2nd week of November. We had are first snowfall of the year on Monday, November 11, 2013. Stores are busy with those holiday shoppers. This month in Oak Harbor will be a short month with the holidays coming. We will be getting Christmas cards out and decorating our center. We have the Holiday Open House & Resource Fair going on at the fairgrounds on Friday December 6, 2013. All the centers will be closed for this event. Oak Harbor will be closed on Wednesday December 25.
PORT CLINTON SENIOR CENTER- 419-734-1481
Can you believe that for December the Port Clinton Senior Center still has roses outside on the bushes? The senior’s had a great time at their 10th anniversary big band dance. After the site council meeting on the 5th, we are going to start decorating the building for Christmas. We can never have two many lights or decorations for Christmas. We have been putting some craft ideas together for some new decorations to put around. We are also going to be working on Christmas cards to send out. The Center will be closed on Friday December 6, 2013 for the Holiday Open House & Resource Fair and will also be closed on Tuesday, December 24th, 2013.

Auxiliary raises $40,000 through multiple events
Submitted story The Magruder Hospital Auxiliary had its annual board meeting Nov. 4 in the conference center at Magruder Hospital. Michele Mueller, president of the auxiliary, presided over the meeting. Board members Kendra German, vice president; Vanda Wahlers, treasurer; Barb Connole, secretary; Marjorie Stys, press reporter; and Kathy Tischler, past president, also attended, along with 65 auxiliary members.
Michele Mueller provided remarks about all the work the auxiliary does throughout the year and thanked committee members for their work. On behalf of the auxiliary, she also presented a check to Magruder Hospital President and CEO Todd Almendinger for $40,000, which represents funds raised through multiple events in 2013 such as the golf outing and charity ball along with book fairs and purse and bag sales. Almendinger updated the auxiliary on the current state of the hospital as well as new services being provided at Magruder Hospital. He also recognized the work that the auxiliary has provided during the past year and thanked them for their service. The officers for 2014 are president, Kendra German; vice president, Susan Johnson; secretary, Vir-ginia Dunwiddie; treasurer, Vanda Wahlers; and press reporter, Marjorie Stys. The meeting ended with musical entertainment from Sue and Amanda Blankenbeker accompanied by Greg Fox on keyboard. Sue is a registered nurse and staff education coordinator at Magruder. The auxiliary and its volunteer program are open for membership and those interested should call Kathy Gallogly at 734-3131, ext. 3256 at Magruder.

"News From The Put-in-Bay Senior Center" "Merry Christmas From All of Us at The Put-in-Bay Senior Center"
October is a month of transition as we lose some of the summer peo-
ple to warmer climates, and re-gain some seniors who have been work-
ing during the summer. We have managed to maintain a substantial
amount of seniors who attend Strength Training and who enjoy the
goodies at the coffee social following exercise. Our Aqua Motion class
has moved to the Crews Nest's inside pool. Seniors come rain or
snow and we are proud of everyone for their willingness to do what is nec-essary in keeping themselves mobile and forever young! Halloween brought a fun night of "trick or treaters" through the senior cen-
ter where we had plenty of candy and other goodies for the kids and the adults. The
seniors who dressed up were a hoot!
Thanks to Tipper's Restaurant, they provided a wonderful dinner for the many
island Veterans who served in the World War II, the
Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
Wishing you all love, laughter, health and happiness always. Candace Pucci

Last month I asked the question, “What are you Thankful for?” I still believe that this is still that time of year to ask yourself that same question. With many of our own in hard times, I am so Thank-ful for the Board here at Danbury. They are truly Angels with Wings of Silver and Hearts of Gold. They have given out to so many in need. Here at Danbury, we all strive to help out those in need. It may be a car repair, heat assistance, or food that we have given, we will continue to help those in need. Our first Bingo game turned out FANTASTIC. I was shocked but thrilled to have such a great turnout. If you like Bingo, come on over to Danbury on the 4th Friday of the month at 6pm. Our gift prizes are really nice, and you can even shop for Christmas gifts if you win. Until next month, May your Holiday Season be Bright and Merry.

December 6th - Pear Harbor Remembrance Day - Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is December 7. In 1994, Congress designated this national observance to honor the more than 2,400 military service per-sonnel who died on this date in 1941, during the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, by Japanese forces. The attack on
Pearl Harbor caused the United States to enter World War II.
December 12th - The Virgin of Guadalupe, sometimes referred to as Our Lady of Guadalupe, is an image of the Virgin Mary that is said to have miraculously appeared on 12 December 1531 on the cloak of a Mexican peasant named Juan Diego.
December 25th - Christmas, The reason for the season. Jesus Christ is born.
December 26th - Kwanzaa begins, Kwanzaa is a seven-day holiday that celebrates the origins of the African American.

The winter season brings lots of fun holiday festivities, but pet-owners should keep in mind the following special precautions. The holidays are not ideal for introducing a pet into your family. New puppies and dogs require extra attention and a stable environment, which the holiday season doesn't permit. Also, a puppy is not a toy or gift that can be returned. Instead, Vet-erinarians suggests giving a gift representative of the dog to come, such as a toy, a leash, or a bed. Holly, mistletoe and poinsettia plants are pet poisons! Make sure they are kept in places your dog cannot reach. Review holiday gifts for dogs to make sure they are safe. Items such as plastic toys and small rawhide sticks may be dangerous. Remove holiday lights from lower branches of your tree. They may get very hot and burn dogs. Watch out for electrical cords. Pets often try to chew them and may get badly shocked or electrocuted. Place wires out of reach. Avoid using glass ornaments. They break easily and may cut a dog's feet and mouth. Refrain from using edible ornaments. Your dog may knock the tree over in an attempt to eat them. Also, commercial ornaments may contain paint or toxins in the preserva-tives. Whether your tree is live or artificial, both kinds of needles are sharp and in-digestible. Don't leave your dog unattended in the room with the tree. Tinsel is dangerous for dogs. It may obstruct circulation and, if swallowed, block the intes-tines. Alcohol and chocolate are toxic for dogs, even in small amounts. Keep unhealthy, sweet treats and seasonal goodies out of reach. The holiday season is a stressful time for dogs. Try to keep a normal schedule during all the excitement.
From all of us here at Oak Harbor Veterinary Hospital, Inc., we would like to wish you all a
Festive and Safe Holiday Season!

PC SENIORS’ TENTH ANNUAL BIG BAND DANCE
“Moments to Remember” was the theme of PC Seniors’ Tenth Annual Big Band Dance bringing back memories of the days of Gem Beach, Rainbow Gardens, and the big bands. The dance was held at the Moose Lodge on Sunday, November 3rd with the 17-piece Night Session Big Band playing the standards. A tasty hors d’ouevres buffet was provided by Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices Community;
on the dessert table was a specialty cake with 10 candles to celebrate the occasion. 50/50 raffles and door prizes added to the excitement. Plaques were presented to Connie Trimble representing Moose Lodge 1610 for their support of PC Seniors’ annual dance and other projects; and also to Denny
Garvin and the Night Session Big Band for providing the music for the past seven years. A 10-year plaque was presented to Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices Community. Otterbein was instrumental in the birth of the annual big band dance and has helped nurture and grow this annual event. Attendance was close to full capacity with guests coming from as far as Parma, Toledo, and the neighboring vicinity. Sincere thanks to the Moose for sponsorship of the hall, Otterbein for providing the buffet, Night Session Big Band for the music, and Walker Family Funeral Homes for their generous donation of door prizes. See you next year. In the picture: Lisa Meckfessel-Cutcher receives the 10-year plaque presented by
Juanita Mills-Persely of PC Seniors to Otterbein. Lisa, an employee of Otterbein,
was in on the coordination of the first dance in 2003 and subsequent dances.
