On January 6, 1910, the Board of Trade held a meeting to discuss the incorpo- ration of Merritt. At that meeting, G.B. Armstrong was elected chairman, and M.L. Grimmett, secretary. At a public meeting in February, it was decided that any move towards incorporation should be delayed for 6 months. At the August meeting, over 150 citizens made the decision in favour of incorporation, and the necessary steps were then taken. After a number of private and public meetings, the City of Merritt was incorporated on April 1, 1911. Soon after, City Council set up a police force and volunteer fire department. By January 1912, the City was asked to buy out the Merritt Water, Light and Power Com- pany which had been working for 2 years to light the streets with power purchased from Middlesboro Collieries. But the MWL&P Co. had business troubles, and on July 2, 1912 the City took over. However, it wasn’t until February 26, 1913 that power finally was turned on. The ongoing troubles fi- nancing power plant, along with the start of the Great De- pression, would eventually lead to Merritt’s bankruptcy on April 21, 1933. To celebrate Merritt’s 110th anniversary, the City is invit- ing residents to participate by submitting a 10-second video clip, finishing the sentence “I love Merritt because…” Vid- eo submissions can be sent in to communications@merritt. ca by April 1 at 4pm. Theft and fraud charges laid after a complex, months-long investigation After 10 months, a complex internal theft investigation into the alleged actions of a Merritt bank employee has resulted in criminal charges being approved by the BC Prosecution Service. On May 26, 2020, the Merritt RCMP received a report of a sus- pected internal theft of a large sum of money discovered by staff at a local financial institution. Police were told that bank officials believed the funds were fraudulently taken by one of its employees over an extended period of time. The financial institution fully cooperated with the criminal investigation. The full investigative findings were submitted to the BC Prosecution Service for charge as- sessment. And on March 25, 2021, the BC Prosecution Service approved one count of theft over $5,000 and two counts of fraud over $5,000 by indictment against 39-year- old Hope Moira Thomas. Fabric Art Fun!
