Objectives

Students will understand how to…o Complete each step of the college application

process.o Use Naviance to complete transcript requests.

o Use Naviance to complete requests for letters of recommendation.

o Use Naviance to monitor when transcripts and letters have been sent to colleges.

o Schedule the REQUIRED graduation requirement verification appointment.

o Sign up for “remind” texts for important senior reminders.

Go to the DGS home page.Select: “Students” tabThen select: “Access Naviance”

Login to Naviance

New Students

Click on “I need to Register”

Enter your ID number. Then, setup your username as your school e-mail address, and password as your ID number.

Current Students

Username is your student e-mail address. Password is your ID number.

and print these documents as necessary.

Steps in College Application Process on Naviance

1. Build list of “Colleges I’m Thinking About”

2. After applying, move colleges you’ve applied to to the “Colleges I’m Applying To” list.

3. Request transcripts.

4. Determine if college(s) need letter(s) of recommendation. If they do, complete steps A, B, and C. (located under “Pages” select: “rec letters instr”)

You’ll have a list of colleges that students applied to in the past OR

If your college is not listed in the College Picker you can “Search by Name”

Select your interest in the college (N/A, Low, Medium, High or First Choice)

Select: “Add Colleges”

The below list of colleges are under “colleges I’m thinking about”Notice the “Delivery Type” column. We will discuss this in more detail. Also, notice the deadlines. Please Note: You can remove unwanted colleges here ONLY. Once you move them to “Colleges I’m Applying To”, you can no longer remove them.

College will accept documents electronically. Common App is not an option. Student indicated will NOT apply via Common App, but documents can be sent electronically. This college is a Common App or you will have a “?” over the CA which means you will need to indicate how you are applying (common application OR university’s application). This college will ONLY accept paper transcripts. Nothing can be sent electronically. You will need to bring a business size envelope addressed with proper postage to College and Career Center in Room A109.

Check the boxes next to “I have submitted my application”, “request transcript”, and “Include unofficial ACT scores”. Click “Add Applications”. You have now completed Step 3: Requesting Transcripts.

Please note: Some colleges DO NOT require transcripts. It is YOUR responsibility to check what documents are required for the colleges you are applying to.

You now have a list of “Colleges I’m Applying To”.

Look at the “How are you applying” column. If it states, “Common App Only” next to any college, you must complete the Common Application. If it states, “Direct to Institution”, you’ll have to apply directly to that institution. If it states, “I’m not sure yet” you’ll have to decide which application (CA or college app). You cannot have any “?” marks in your “Submission” column.

If you are applying via Common App, you need to complete the:● CA FERPA Waiver in your Common App account● Use your PERSONAL e-mail address in CA● Enter the same email address used in your Common App account to match

it in Naviance

In Common App, DGS is listed as: South High School

NOTE: IN YOUR COMMON APPLICATION, DO NOT LIST YOUR COUNSELOR OR TEACHERS AS RECOMMENDERS! - this is very important

You will see a list of colleges you requested transcripts for, and the date that the transcript was

sent (or, if it is pending).

If you see that you have not requested your transcript, go to the “Colleges” tab and click on “Transcript”.

• Not all colleges require letters of recommendation. It is your responsibility to find out if you need letters, and how many letters you need. OR, find out if you do not need them at all.

• Not All Common Applications require Letters of Recommendation from a Counselor and/or Teacher(s). Common App has a list of how many teacher letters of recommendations are needed on their website. It is your responsibility to find out how many letters you need for your Common App.

• If you need a letter of recommendation from your counselor, you are required to complete steps A, B, and C, which will be discussed on the following slides.

• If you ONLY need a letter of recommendation from a TEACHER, only complete step C.

• NOTE: DO NOT COMPLETE STEPS A, B, AND C UNTIL YOU ARE CERTAIN YOU NEED LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION (located under “Pages” select: “Rec Letters Instr”)

Step A: Request INFORMAL TEACHER Evaluations

1. Make a personal contact with 3-4 teachers (preferably from junior year) to ask if they will provide feedback for your counselor recommendation letter. Do this before completing the following steps!

2. On the “Home” page of Naviance Select “Colleges” tab3. Under “colleges I’m applying to” select “letters of recommendation” and select

“add requests”.4. Remember: In Naviance it states “Recommendations”- when you email a

teacher via Naviance, you are requesting an INFORMAL TEACHER EVALUATION, which is stored in Naviance and is only seen by your counselor. These evaluations are never sent to your college(s).

After you have spoken to teachers in person, select “who you would like to write this evaluation”.

● Remember in Naviance it states “Letters of Recommendation”. Teachers will provide feedback for counselor recommendation letter.

● These are INFORMAL EVALUATIONS from your teachers.

Students will be able to see in the “Status” column when “Informal Teacher Evaluations” have been

“Requested” or in “Progress”.

Step B: Required Questions for College and/or Scholarship Recommendations 1. Select “About Me”

2. Under "Surveys to take" select: "Required questions for college recommendations“. Thoroughly answer all questions.

3. To continue working, click “Save and return later”. 4. When completely done select, "Save and I am Finished“. You cannot go back to edit

the document after clicking this button.

Step C: Requesting FORMAL COUNSELOR and/or TEACHER Recommendation Letter

Select: “Frml Cnlr/Tchr Rec” located on the left side of the “Home Page” of Naviance under “Links”

✓ Fill in all areas of the Google form: “2017-18 DGS Formal Counselor/Teacher Recommendation Request Form”.

✓ Create a separate request for each college that requires a Formal letter of recommendation.

REMEMBER to complete the below steps prior to completing this Google form (Step C): 1. Step A (Informal Teacher feedback is

needed) & 2. Step B (Required Questions completed by

the student)

2017-2018 DGS COLLEGE APPLICATION DEADLINES

The following deadlines have been established to ensure that your college materials are submitted on time to meet the application deadlines set by the college or university to which you are applying.

It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to plan ahead and meet these deadlines!

FOR APPLICATIONS REQUIRING RECOMMENDATIONS:

• Request transcripts from NCAA and/or NAIA.

• See your counselor with any questions or concerns.

on the right side of the “Home” Page of Naviance under “Document Library”.

REMINDERS

• All instructions for completing applications and requesting transcripts & letters of recommendation are listed on the left side of the Naviance home page.

• Allow 3 weeks to process applications that require letters of recommendation. Refer to “DGS APP DEADLINES” located on the “Home Page” of Naviance under “Pages”.

• Counselor and/or Teacher recommendations will be sent electronically to the colleges that participate in Naviance.

• Scholarship opportunities are listed in Naviance, however, you cannot send recommendation letters or transcripts electronically. You will need to provide an addressed envelope with postage and all supporting documents to the College and Career Center, Room A109.

Additional Reminders: ✓ You must start with listing your college applications in Naviance under “colleges I’m

thinking about”. If you are planning to apply to COD, you need to add it in Naviance in order to send your transcript.

✓ Move colleges to the “colleges I’m applying to” list when you decide that you are definitely

applying. Make sure your “How are you applying” column is completed. ✓ Steps A (teacher evaluations) and Steps B (required questions for college recommendations) have to be completed before completing Step C (Formal Counselor and/or Teacher Letter of Recommendation).

A good rule of thumb is to check your on-line college status weekly. If you have any questions regarding your college status, you can always call the college admissions office directly.

Graduation Requirement Verification (i.e. Senior Exit) Scheduling Process

• THE GRADUATION REQUIREMENT VERIFICATION IS A REQUIRED MEETING! You are responsible for scheduling your appointment!

• The purpose of the meeting is to review your credits, determine if you are completing all of your graduation requirements, and discuss college planning or other post-secondary options.

• CHECK YOUR DGS E-MAIL RIGHT NOW. • Open the e-mail entitled “Senior Exit Appointment Selection”. • Open the “Senior Exit Appointment Selection” survey.• Complete the survey before you leave today!

• You will receive e-mail verification of your scheduled date and time.

• Come prepared to your scheduled time with credit questions, college questions/information, and other post-secondary questions.
