1. The purpose of homework, like schoolwork, is learning. Homework is important for students of all ages, as it helps them build on what they have already learnt in the class room, and prepares them for the next stage in their learning.

2. Homework is also valuable for teachers, as it helps them assess the progress of their students. There is a clear link between the time spent by students on out-of-class study and student achievement.

3. Homework helps to bridge the gap between home and school. Teachers, students, parents and caregivers should see it as a vital part of the home-school partnership, which supports young people while they learn.

4. The role of teachers is to...• Ensure homework is related to the work being done at school• Set homework, which allows students to demonstrate what they are capable of achieving and

which challenges them to progress• Give students sufficient time for the completion of tasks• Ensure students are aware of what is expected of them, and how their work will be assessed• Communicate with parents about areas of concern related to homework• Assess homework to determine achievement by students• Maintain student homework records.

5. The task of students is to...• Complete homework within the given time frame• Maintain a homework record for their teachers and parents/carers• Show their homework to their parents/carers and ask them to sign it.

6. Parents/carers can help by...• Supporting students in completing homework• Providing, if possible, a dedicated place and desk for homework and study• Assisting teachers to monitor homework by signing given tasks• Communicating with teachers, Head Teachers or the Deputy Principal, about any concerns

with homework or their child’s approach to homework.7. Homework guidelines for Years 7-12...

• Secondary students are taught by a number of specialist subject teachers. Homework will be set by all teachers, but not necessarily every day. Sufficient time must be allowed for research activities and larger assignments, so that students can access resources.

• Homework activities will vary according to the needs of the various subjects being studied. While most homework will consist of completing work begun in class and preparing for future lessons, students may also be given work to consolidate what they have learnt and to help them progress to the next stage of their learning.

• As a guide, students in Years 7-8 should be expected to spend about six hours per week on homework; those in Years 9-10 about eight hours per week; those in Years 11-12 usually at least ten to fifteen hours per week in Year 11, with a further increase in time in Year 12.

Attending school regularly and getting to class on time are most important in achieving success at school and is part of the self-discipline for life.Every student must maintain attendance levels required by the Department of Education & Training. Students with excessive absenteeism may be requested to repeat a year.

STUDENTS CAN HELP BY...• Attending school regularly.• Being punctual to morning roll call and lessons.• Giving a note to their roll call teacher from a parent/carer, explaining their absence on their first

day back from the absence.• Bringing a note from a parent/carer, to explain any lateness to school will avoid being issued

with a lunch detention. Failure to complete a lunch detention will result in an afternoon detention being issued.

• Reporting to Newling Office, when they are late to school.• Having any Early Leaver Note signed by the Deputy Principal or Head Teacher Administration, in

the morning, and then presenting the note to Wright Office before they leave school.

PARENTS AND CARERS PLAY AN IMPORTANT PART IN THIS PROCEDURE. THEY CAN HELP BY...• Writing a note the day after the absence (it is required by law). This note must be written and signed by a parent/carer.• Writing notes for late arrival or any other request about attendance.• Ensuring all notes include the:

• student’s first and last (family) name and year group• date the note was written• date of the absence(s)• reason for absence.

The school must classify all absences as either sick, leave or not approved, therefore the school must be told the reason for the absence.• Contacting the school by telephone or in person, if your child will be absent for three days or more.• Making appointments with doctors, dentists etc., outside school time, wherever possible so

interruptions to your child’s education are minimised.Taking holidays in school time should be avoided as much as possible as it can greatly hinder a student’s ability to meet course outcomes. Students in Years 10, 11 & 12 especially risk NOT meeting course requirements and may have to repeat the year. If it is necessary to have holidays in school time contact a Deputy Principal in writing at least 2 weeks before the holidays. Work can be organised for the period of leave. Leave of 100 days or more must have approval from the School and the Regional Director.Students on Youth Allowance from Centrelink must have a Doctor’s Certificate to cover any absences and need to be aware that any holidays in school time will reduce their Youth Allowance payments.Inadequate attendance, including constant lateness and/or truancy, may result in your child having to repeat a year. Parents are more than welcome to contact the school by telephone or in person, to

check on their child’s attendance record. If there is a problem with attendance, the school will contact parents/carers and may send the Home School Liaison Officer to visit and discuss the problem. The school uses a computer program that contacts parents when students are absent or late to school. Parents need to follow the instructions in the telephone message:1. To inform the school they have received the school’s message.2. To leave a message to explain why the student is absent.
