1. Introduction
Asamodern,independentco-educationalschoolforstudentsfromPre-schooltoYear13,StAndrew’sCollegeoffersalearningenvironmentthat
encouragesstudentstoachievetheirbest.MiddleSchool(Years9–11)andtheSeniorCollege(Years12–13)sharethesamevalues(Truth,ExcellenceandFaith),ethos,classroomsandteachingstaff.
TheSeniorCollegephilosophyistoregardstudentsasuniqueyoungadultswhoaredevelopingsocialresponsibilitywithinaco-educationalenvironmentandpreparingforlifeafterCollege.Thereisencouragementandemphasisplacedonself.
Weexpectstudentstobeself-disciplined,self-motivated,self-directedandtotakeresponsibilityfortheirowndecisions,althoughthereisalwayssupportandguidanceavailable.
Werecognisethatstudentshavemovedfromdependence(primaryschoolyears)toindependence(MiddleSchoolyears)tointerdependence(SeniorCollegeyears).Wefocusonmakingstudentsawarethatworkingwithothersandbeingsensitivetotheiropinionsandbeliefsisanexpectationofadulthood.
Ourbroadcurriculumdevelopsstudents’academic,sporting,cultural,spiritual,socialandrecreationalneedsandbuildsbalanced,well-roundedindividuals.Allstudentsareencouragedtoachievetotheirhighestpotentialinallpursuits.SeniorCollegeteachersencourageindividualresponsibilityandleadership.
2. Senior College PhilosophyTheyprovidequalityfeedbacktostudents,recognisetheirsuccessandguidetheirprogress.WeexpectstudentstobehaveinamaturemannerandtoadheretotheexpectationsoftheSeniorCollege.Withthehelpoftheirtutorsanddeans,studentsarepersonallyaccountablefortheirownacademicandsocialprogress.
TheSeniorCollegehasitsownstudentcentre,whichincludesacommonroom,caféteria,lecturetheatre,studyareas,andlockers.Ourstudentsenjoythisrecognitionoftheirseniority.Theyaretreatedasyoungadultsandgivenparticularprivilegesandfreedoms,butwiththesecomeboundariesandresponsibilites.Unhelpfulorinappropriatedecisionshaveconsequences.
IlookforwardtoworkingwithyouduringyourfinalyearsatschoolandhopeyourecallyourdaysintheSeniorCollegefondly.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all new students and their parents and guardians, and to all those returning to the Senior College this year.
TheSeniorCollegeisauniqueentitywithinStAndrew’sCollege.Itisaplaceoflearning,makinglifelongfriendshipsandsocialising.YourSeniorCollegeyearsareatimeofgrowingawarenessofyourplaceinsocietyandtheworldatlarge.Youwillbepresentedwithawiderangeofexperiencesandopportunities.Ihopeyoumakethemostofyourtimehere,availyourselfofallthatisonofferandmakewiseandmaturechoices.
DeansTherearedeansforeachyeargroupintheSeniorCollege.TheymeetregularlywiththeHeadofSeniorCollegeandplayanimportantpartinthepastoralcareofstudents.
Thedeansarewell-informedandpersonallyinterestedinyou,andcanassistwithyouracademicconcerns.Thedeanmayarrangeinterviewswithothermembersofstaff,orreferyouforcareersorguidancecounselling.TheHeadofSeniorCollegeanddeansmeetweeklywiththetutors.
Thedeansfor2016areMrNickRyan(Year12)andMrsJacquelineYoder(Year13).
TutorGroupsThestructureoftutorgroupsintheSeniorCollegewillchangein2016.Studentswillnowremainwiththesametutor,wherepossible,throughouttheirtimeatStAndrew’s.TherewillbeseparategroupsintheSeniorCollegeforYears12and13students.ThiswillnecessitatesomereorganisationofYear13studentsfor2016tocreatethenewgroups.TheHeadofSeniorCollege,inconsultationwiththedeans,isresponsibleforallocatingstudentstotutorgroups.
Tutors,whohavearesponsibilityforacademicoverviewandstudentwell-being,willmeetwiththeirstudentseveryMonday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday(foranextendedtime)andoccasionallyonFriday.Whilethedeansadministermanyaspectsoftheyeargrouporganisation,theydelegateresponsibilitiestotutors,whowillbeanimportantsourceofinformationanddirectionforstudents.Tutorswillbeawareofeachstudent’stimetableandoptionsprogramme,reports,Diplomacompletionsportingandculturalactivities.
Ifastudenthasanydifficultyinclass,orifsomeaspectofbehaviouriscalledintoquestion,tutorsshouldbeinformed.Tutorswilldiscussastudent’sgradeswiththem,writecommentsonreports,assistinensuringalltherequirementsoftheSeniorCollegeDiplomaarebeingmetandhelpwiththepreparationoftheirLeaver’sProfile.
Parentsareabletocontactastudent’stutorbyemail,telephoneorpersonalvisit.
3. Student ManagementInmanagingstudents’needsandconcernsatStAndrew’sCollege,weaffirmgoodattitudesandbehaviour,setclearboundariesandrespondwithconsequenceswhenthoseboundariesarecrossed.
(a)PastoralCare
Pastoralcareistheintegrationoftheacademic,socialandreligiousdimensionsoftheschool,sothatanatmosphereofcareprevails.
Pastoralcareseekstorespondtostudentneedssuchas:• self-esteemandself-discipline;• careercounsellingandvocationalawareness;• religiousmeaningandspirituality;• moralandpersonaldevelopment;• developingsocialrelationshipsandeffective
communication;• encouragingandsupportingstudentsintheir
sportingandculturalendeavours;• knowledge,skillsandacademicprogress.
ThegoalsoftheStAndrew’spastoralcaresystemaretoconnectstudentstoakeycaringadultintheCollegesystem,tofosterasenseofwell-beingamongststudentsandtoencouragestudentstomaximisetheirpotentialintheschoolenvironment.
ThePastoralCareCommitteemeetsweeklytodiscussindividualstudent’sneedsandtodeveloppoliciestomeetthem.ItischairedbytheChaplainandincludestheHeadoftheSecondarySchool,theDirectorofBoarding,theHeadsoftheMiddleSchoolandSeniorCollege,theCollegeCounsellor,HeadofLearningSupportandHeadofInternationalStudents.Thecommitteeco-ordinatesthewidenetworkofpeopleprovidingpastoralcare,whichincludesdeans,tutors,boardinghousestaffandLearningSupportstaff.
TheHeadofSeniorCollegerunsaparentinformationeveningandallparents,guardiansandstudentsareencouragedtoattend.ThismeetingtakesplaceearlyinTerm1.OtherwholeCollegeeveningsareorganised,andparentsandcaregiverswillbeadvisedofrelevanttimes.

Conferencesinvolvingstudents,parentsandtutorswillbeheldtwiceayear–atthestartoftheyearandthebeginningofTerm3.Theseconferencesareaimedatdiscussingacademicprogress,anypastoralcareissues,goalsfortheyearandanyotherrelevantmatters.
LearningSupportHODsMrBrettClarkandMrJamieClarkco-ordinateLearningSupport,whichislocatedupstairsinStrowanHouse.TheobjectiveofthisdepartmentistoprovidesupportandguidanceinordertomeetthelearningneedsofStAndrew’sCollegestudents.
StaffinLearningSupportcanhelpwith:
• learningneeds;• goalsetting;• extensionprogrammes;• decisionmaking;• motivation;• timemanagement;• studyskills;• readerwriter;• extratime(assessment).

CareersEducationandTransitionMrPeterFearyandMsEllenHampsonareresponsibleforoverseeingCareersEducationandTransitionintheCollege.Theobjectiveofthisdepartmentistoassiststudentstomakedecisionsatkeytransitionpointsandsupportstheirsuccessfultransitionfromschooltofurthereducationorwork.Italsoaimstodevelopthecareermanagementcompetenciesthatwillequipstudentstomanagetheircareerpathwaysandopportunitiesthroughouttheirlives.
BoththeCareersRoomandtheTransitionclassroomarebasedintheSeniorCollege.
IllnessandAccidentsTheHealthCentreislocatedinMacGibbonHouse.TheRegisteredNurse,MsLindaBougen,isavailablefrom8.30am–4.15pmforassessmentandtreatmentofinjuriesandillnesses,nutritionaladvice,supporttostopsmoking,diabetesandasthmasupport,contraceptive/sexualhealthadviceandsupportwithotherhealthissuessuchasdepression,relationshipproblems,stress,anxiety,drugandalcoholproblems.StudentswhoareillmaynotleavetheCollegewithoutthepermissionoftheCollegeNurse,whowillnotifytheAttendanceOfficerandcontacthometoensuresomeonethereisexpectingyou.Ifillnesspreventsastudentattendingtestsorexams,theymustensurethatthisisdiscussedwithrelevantteachers.
HealthandLifeSkillsTheCollegeacknowledgestheimportanceofparentsandguardiansastheprimaryandmostinfluentialteachersofHealthandLifeSkills.
Weprovidesupportbyteachingandfosteringmatureandresponsibleattitudestowardsdrugsandalcohol,sexualbehaviour,relationships,marriage,familyandparenthood,personalidentity,genderequity,biculturalism,multiculturalismandothersimilarissues.
WeoffereffectiveandappropriatehealthandLifeSkillsprogrammesduringtheSeniorCollegeyears.
ChapelStAndrew’sCollegeisfirmlyfoundedonChristianprinciples,andworshipinchapelisacentralfeatureoflifeintheCollegecommunity.OurCollegemotto,‘FidesetPatria’(FaithandCountry),presentsuswithaspecialchallengeasweseektoencourageourstudentstoknowandloveGod,andtoserveotherswithinandbeyondourCollegecommunity.
Allstudentsandstaffattendaweeklychapel,currentlyheldintheGymnasiumwhileournewChapelisbuilt.ThenewChapelwillbecompletedinSeptember2016.Chapelfeaturesinourlifeintheseways:
• It is a place of prayer and quietness.Chapelservicesareatimetoreflectonallthathappensduringtheterm,bothinsideandoutsidethe
school.Itisexpectedthatwhenyouenterforchapelalltalkingceases.Therightofanyonetohaveaccesstoaquietenvironmentforpersonalreflectionandcontemplationmustberespectedbyall;
• It is a time of learning–Avarietyoftopicsandspeakersexposepupilstowide-rangingspiritualinsightsandattitudes;
• It is a centre of giving–Inchapelwegivetimeandattention.Eachyear,studentsalsomakesubstantialdonationstoarangeofcharities.
DPRValuesSomeyearsagothestaff,studentsandparentsoftheCollegesettledonsevenkeyvaluesthatwouldbecomeafocusfortheCollegecommunity.ThesevaluesarepromotedinchapelandintutorgroupsaspartofaprogrammecalledDPR(DevelopingPositiveRelationships).ThesevenDPRValuesare:

AsamemberoftheSeniorCollegeyouwillberegardedasayoungadultandtreatedassuchbythestaff.Thedegreeoffreedomyouhavedependsuponyourwillingnesstobehaveinaresponsiblemanner.BehaviourwhichbringstheCollegeintodisreputewillnotbeaccepted.
TherelationshipbetweenstaffandstudentsisanessentialingredientinthesuccessofourCollege.Wewantyoutovaluethisrelationship,whichisbuiltonmutualrespectandcommoncourtesy.Studentsareexpectedtoshowappropriaterespectforstaff,forexamplebyaddressingthemasSir,Ma’amorMr,

Education,LifeSkillsorstudy.MostYear12studentsareinclassfor28periodsaweekandYear13studentsupto24periods.Yourtimetablewillbeuniquetoyou.Yourdean,whowillalsorecommendanychanges,willapproveit.
Year13studyperiodsareonsiteandaretobeusedforacademicstudyorquietdowntime.Theyarenottobeusedforsportscoaching,personalfitnesssessionsorculturalpractices/rehearsals.Ifstudyperiodsareusedinappropriately,studentsmaybeaskedtoattendsupervisedstudyortostudyinanallocatedroom.
TutorgroupmeetingsareheldonMonday,Tuesday,WednesdayandThursday(foranextendedtime).OnFridayswherethereisnofullassemblytheremaybeeitheraSeniorCollegeassemblyrunbytheHeadofSeniorCollegeoradeans’meetingwiththerelevantyeargroups.Thesewillrunfrom8.30am–9.00am,followedbyasixperiodteachingday.OnFridayswithfullCollegeassemblies(Years8–13)oneperiodrotationwillbeexcludedfromtheteachingday.
Lunchisat12.35pmeachdayandtheCaféteriaisopenbeforeschool,atmorningintervalandatlunchtimes.
AttendanceAttendanceatallclassesisexpected.Inmostsubjectsthereisacontinuityofteachingandlearning.Whenthiscontinuityisbrokenbyabsenceyourprogresscannotbemaintained.Forunavoidableabsences,avoicemessageshouldbeleftontheCollegeAbsenteeLine03940-2031onthemorningoftheabsence.Themessageshouldidentifythecaller,thereasonfortheabsenceandtheday(s)oftheabsence.ThisCollegevoicemailsystemisforparentsandcaregiversonlyandisnottobeusedbystudents.Alternatively,partentsarewelcometoemailthecollegeatattendance@stac.school.nzwiththereasonsforastudent’sabsence.
Parentswillbenotifiedofaccumulatedunjustifiedabsences,orifabsencesareacauseforconcern.
Ifastudentaccumulatesmorethanthreeunjustifiedabsencesinanyterm,Termswillnotbeawarded.Parentswillbeinformed.Alistofunexplained
Mrsetc.,andactappropriatelytowardstheirpeers,throughlanguageandmovementaroundtheCollege.
Remember,theprimereasonforattendinganyacademicinstitutionistogainqualificationsthatwillmakeyoubetterabletoparticipateintheworldbeyondtheCollege.Makethemostofthesetwoshortyears,aswhatyouachieveherewillmostlikelyhaveasignificantimpactonthepathyoutakewhenyouleave.

LeaveIfyouwishtoleavetheCollegegroundsduringtheday,youmustobtainleaveandsignoutatSeniorCollegereception.Year12studentsaregenerallynotallowedtoleavetheCollege.IfyouaresickyoushouldseetheCollegeNurseintheHealthCentre.
Youareencouragedtomakeallappointmentsoutsideschooltime.Ifthisisnotpossible,itisacourtesytoinformteacherswhoseclasseswillbemissedduringtheappointmenttime.YoumustleaveandreturnviatheLeaveBooklocatedintheSeniorCollegereception.
Year12DuringtheCollegeday,Year12studentsmustobtainpermissionfromtheirdean,SeniorCollegereceptionortheHeadofSeniorCollegetoleavethegrounds.Permissionwillrequireanotefromaparentorguardian,aconsultationappointmentcard,theparentorguardianmakingpriorcontactwiththeschooloratthediscretionoftheappropriatedeanortheHeadofSeniorCollege.DepartureandreturnmustbeviatheLeaveBooklocatedintheSeniorCollegereception.
Year13OneoftheprivilegesofYear13istheabilitytosignoutatlunchtimesonly,usingtheLeaveBookinSeniorCollegereception.Thebookisself-signondepartureandreturn.Fullandcorrectuniformmustbewornwhilstonlunchleave.Studentscannotleavethegroundsatothertimesoftheday,unlesstheyhaveanotefromaparentorguardian,aconsultationappointmentcardoriftheparentorguardianhasmadepriorcontact.StudentsarenotpermittedtoleavetheCollegeduringstudyperiod.
Year13HomeStudyInTerm3,Year13studentsareabletoapplyforhomestudy.Thismeanstheyareabletostudyathomeintheirscheduledstudyperiodsifpracticable.Suchapplicationsareconsideredontheirindividualmerit,andthestudent’sacademicachievementinYear13istakenintoaccount.
Parentsarealsorequiredtoacceptresponsibilityfortheirsonordaughterduringthesetimes.ApplicationformsareavailablefromSeniorCollegereception.Parentsorguardianswillbeadvisedoftheoutcomeofsuchapplications.

SpecialLeaveSpecialleaveisgenerallygrantedforcompassionatereasonsaffectingimmediatefamily,andforparticipationinarecognisedevent(sports,cultural,seminar,conference).ApplicationformsforspecialleavecanbedownloadedfromStACInformationandFormsontheintranet,andwherepossibletheseshouldbesubmittedtotheHeadofSeniorCollegenolessthan10daysinadvance.Parentsorguardianswillbeadvisedoftheoutcomeofsuchapplications.
AsCollegeholidaydatesarewelladvertised,requestsforfamilyholidaysduringtermtime,earlydeparturesorlatereturnsfromholidaysarenotencouragedandsuchapplicationsarenotlikelytobeapproved.TheCollege’sreluctancetograntsuchleaveisduetotheadditionalpressureplacedonbothstudentsandteachers,especiallyinastudent’sNCEAyears.
Explainedleave,withajustifiablereason,willbegrantedforsickness,familyemergencyorcompassionatereasons.
CareofPropertyRememberthatasayoungadult,youareresponsibleforyourownproperty.YouareadvisedagainstbringingvaluablesandmoneytoCollege,andyoushouldensurethatyourclothingandotherbelongingsarenamedandyourlockerkeptlocked.Preventionisthebestpolicy,asrecoveryofstolenitemsisunlikelyinmanycases.AsamemberoftheCollegefamilyitisexpectedthatyouwillrespectallCollegepropertyandtheCollegegrounds.
ConsumptionofFoodandDrinkWheninCollegeuniformandwalkinginpublicareastheeatingoffastfoodisnotacceptable.Uniformreportistheoutcomeforstudentswhobreachthisrequirement.

StudentVehicleRules2016TheserulesapplytoallstudentswhodriveavehicletoCollege.Theiraimistoensurethesafetyofdrivers,passengers,andotherroadusers,andtopromotecourtesyandrespecttowardsCollegeneighbours.Theyapplytoallstudents,includingboarderswhohavetheirownvehiclesatschool.1. FromthestartoftheyearSeniorCollegestudentswillbetreatedasresponsibleyoungadults.ThosewhoareunabletocomplywithCollegeregulationswillbewarnedabouttheirbehaviour.
Forstudentswhocontinuetooffend,Collegeprocedureswillbeapplied.Thesemayincludeformalwithdrawalfromclass(parentsinformed),withdrawalofstudyprivileges,removalofSeniorCollegeprivilegessuchaslunchleave,removalofvehiclepermitforCollegedailyuse,placementonuniformreport,SeniorCollegeconsequence,restorativepractices,Saturdaydetention,placementonbehaviourcontract,conditionalenrolment,standdown,suspensionorexpulsion.
TheSeniorCollegeconsequence,whichtakestheformofastudyperiodorsomeservicetoothers,takesplaceonFridayat3.40pmandlastsforanhour.ItisprimarilyforbreachesofCollegerulesoutsidetheclassroom.Deansmayuseconsequencesfromtimetotimeattheirdiscretiontoreinforceclassroomprotocols.
StudentscommittingmoreseriousmisdemeanoursmayberequiredtoattendaSaturdaydetention,eitherfrom9.00am–12.00pmor1.00pm–4.00pm.Parentswillbeinformed.Non-completionofSaturdaydetentionwillresultinasixhourdetentiononthefirstMondayinthenextavailableCollegeholidays.SaturdaydetentionstakeprecedenceoveranyCollegeactivityotherthanacademicstudies.
Beingformallywithdrawnfromclassistreatedseriously.TheconsequencewillrangefromaSaturdaydetentiontoaLevel4disciplinarymeeting.IfastudentiswithdrawnfromclasstheymustimmediatelyreporttoSeniorCollegereceptionandstaythereuntiltheyhavereceivedfurtherinstruction.Parentsorguardianswillbeinformed.

FoundationTheCollegewasfoundedin1916throughtheeffortsoftheRev.A.T.ThompsonOBEMABD,andwasofficiallyopenedintheManseofStAndrew’sChurch,Christchurch,on17March1917(StPatrick’sDay).DuncanRutherford,astaunchPresbyterianfromLeslieHills,leftagenerousbequestof£5000,whichwasusedtopurchase‘Strowan’fromthetrusteesofthelateG.G.Stead.In1918theCollegetransferredtoitsnewsiteonPapanuiRoad.
In1858StAndrew’sChurchfoundedoneofthefirstsecondaryschoolsinCanterbury,thePresbyterianHighSchool,whichdevelopedintoChristchurchWestHighSchoolandisnowknownasHagleyCommunityCollege.
ItwasthediscoveryoftheoriginaldocumentsrelatingtothePresbyterianHighSchoolthatlargelybroughtaboutthedecisiontofoundthepresentCollege,whichmaythereforeclaimtobeitslinealdescendant.
ThingsScottishandPresbyterianMuchofwhatmakesthisschooldifferentfromotherscomesfromitsScottish-Presbyterianorigins.Thereare14Presbyterian-foundedcollegesinNewZealandtoday.StAndrew’shassportinglinkswithseveral–JohnMcGlashan(Dunedin),StKentigern(Auckland),Lindisfarne(Hastings)andScots(Wellington).TherehavebeenmanyandvariouslinkswithRangiRuruGirls’Schooland,sincethearrivaloffemalestudentsintheSeniorCollege,contactshavebegunwithColumbaCollege(Dunedin).WeshareagreatprideinourScottishheritagewithalltheseschools.
TheCollegesongwaswrittenin1925byT.A.Stuart-Menteath,amemberofstaff.IttellsthelegendofthemonkRegulusbringingtherelics(bones)ofthediscipleAndrewfromGreecetoScotland,andofhowthestoriesofStAndrewandthefaithoftheScotswhohonouredhimhaveinspiredChristiansthroughtheages.
TheCollegetartanistheFergussontartan,asthepipebandgotitsfirstkiltsin1924whenGeneralSirCharlesFergussonwastheGovernor-General.Prefectsdressformallyinkilts,cutawayjacketsandsporransforFridayassemblies.
1851 PropertyRS299wasfirstpurchasedfrom CanterburyAssociationbyRev.Henry SidebottomofHalifaxfor£150.Thisarea of50acreswasforhissonJohn.
1856 GrantedtoSirThomasTancred,whobuiltthe firsthomestead.
1858LeasedbyThomasDuncan,CrownProsecutor.
1865PurchasedbyDuncanwhoenlargedthehouse andnamedtheproperty‘Strowan’aftera familyestateinScotland(derivedfrom StRowan,aseventh-centuryscholarand saint).
