Elite Homes of Winnipeg

From Rags to Riches! Many early Winnipeggers took advantage of the growth of the city and the West and became very wealthy supplying the needs of the time. What to do with that money? The women belonged to and started charities to help the less fortunate. The men needed their toys, a new fad called an automobile, and a new palace to live in. We'll take a look at the elite homes in the city and the areas they were located in. Beauty and craftsmanship at its finest.

We're delighted to welcome Barbara Brewster, "Passionate Student of Life, Spontaneity Addict, and Elder Extraordinaire". Barbara is the author of several inspirational books, including Down Under All Over, A Love Affair with Australia, in which she writes about her emigration to Australia from California in 1967 (at age 22). She'll share her experiences as a Patch Adams clown, an MS survivor, a laughter specialist, and much more about her fascinating life. Join us for a lively interview!

Virtual Town Hall on Rural Transportation

A & O is partnering with the University of Winnipeg to hold a Virtual Town Hall meeting to ask people in rural communities about their transportation options in their areas. This information may lead to improved transportation services in your areas and bring more awareness to the issues that are faced by older adults living in rural Manitoba.

A short questionnaire will be sent to you for consideration and there will be two sessions scheduled so you can choose one of the two.

Join Deborah Lorteau from A & O who will be moderating the Town Hall and Dr. Gina Sylvestre from the University of Winnipeg who will pose the questions and collect the information.

A Journeyman to Grief

In 1858, a young woman on her honeymoon is forcibly abducted and taken across the border from Canada and sold into slavery. Thirty-eight years later, Detective Murdoch is working on a murder case that will take all of his resourcefulness to solve. The owner of one of Toronto’s livery stables has been found dead. Then a second man is also murdered. Murdoch has to find out whether Toronto’s small “coloured” community has a vicious murderer in its midst - an investigation that puts his own life in danger.

Manitoba Electrical Museum

Treat your imagination to a trip through electrical history! The Manitoba Electrical Museum and Education Centre will take you on a walk through time. Beginning in the 1800s before electricity was even thought of, our passionate guide will take you through the decades from the early days when electric streetcars first came to Winnipeg through the decades as hydroelectric power was developed, and refrigerators, washing machines and radios became common. Join us on a memorable tour.

Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is a day celebrated on February 2nd. According to Folklore, if it’s cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks.

Join us to hear about the history of Groundhog Day and make your prediction about whether or not the groundhog will see his shadow this year!

St. Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on March 17th. The day commemorates St. Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, as well as celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks.

An exploration of the history of Valentine’s day traditions and mythologies. We will discuss the symbols around this holiday and how they came to be. We will also talk about some local love stories. The history of Valentine's Day - and the story of its patron saint - is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?
