Not onl y wil l it allow you to be stronger, healthier and more inde- pendent but is also the key to a real sense of wellbeing. Old age doesn’t need to be a barrier to anything and living a full and independent life that suits you can be just as attainable after 70 as it at any oth er stage of adu lt life . Fundament al is eatin g well and being healthy. A good diet will give you all the essential benefits your body needs, especially if you cho ose meals and ingredie nts that are full of nutrients. Think quality not qua nti ty, in- clude as many fruit and vegeta- bles as you can and look for lean meats, oily fish and whole grains as staples to your meal planning. Cook foods you enjoy and don’t deny yourself the occasional treat. Kee p activ e, 30 minu tes of ex- ercise a day can make a real dif- ference, whether it’s a brisk walk, some light housework, a session at the gym or ev en a run . Try to mak e adj ustments to suit you r body’s changing needs. Keep mentally active, challenge your self to new activiti es, learn a new skill or try the cryptic cross- word in the paper . Meet up with friends and family or join a social group, book club or society. Stay on top of dental , optician and GP appoin tme nts . Pro mpt treatment can really make a differ- ence to some illnesses and issues associated with aging. Winte r isn’t far away and keep- ing warm is vital. Dre ss well and appro priat ely whe n goi ng out side, inv est in g oo d pair of wi nt er s ho es or boot s, watch out for falls on icy pavements and roads and be sen- sible when it come s to venturin g out in very cold weather. At home heating is vital. Finan- cia l wor rie s may stop you from hea ting you r home but help is avail able and charities such as Age UK work to help people stay warm. Free classes on technologyTECHNOLOGY is now a majorpart of our lives.

From keeping in touch toentertainment and adminis-tration, using technology isunavoidable and for someis still a daunting prospect.

And the increased use oftechnology to communicatecan mean some people feelleft behind and isolated.

A three-year project startedby CAVS in September 2012,with funding from ComicRelief’s Older Person Pro-gram, KITe (Keep in Touch)aims to support older peoplethroughout Carmarthenshire

to become included and ac-tive in today’s increasinglydigital world.

The project offers training, advice and guidance throughIT classes, workshops, workwith community and social

groups.As an added bonus, be-

cause it is a funded project, classes are free.

Whether you want to knowhow to Skype or to useemail, or organise your pho-tos or get to grip with Win-dows 8, there is a host ofinformation and digital skillsyou can master.

There are courses suit-

able for beginners, refresh-er classes and classes forthose who have masteredthe basics and are looking tofurther their skills.

Always popular are thedrop-in sessions and one-off workshops, which arethe ideal way to learn a par-ticular subject. Volunteersto help run these sessionsare always needed and it’s a

great way to shareskills.
